In real estate there are three guidelines: location, location, and location. In reading the Bible, there are also three guidelines: context, context, and context. Let’s first look at the context for this verse by examining the author. The author of this verse is the Apostle Paul. Paul wrote this verse while incarcerated in Rome, as he awaited trial from Caesar himself. This, of course, wasn’t the first time Paul had faced intense adversity. This was the same Paul who had been repeatedly threatened, jailed, whipped, stoned, stranded at sea, and to top things off—bitten by a poisonous snake. Paul had no idea how his situation would resolve itself. He could be acquitted or beheaded, but regardless, Paul wrote this verse with happiness and joy knowing that he would persevere through any hardship because Jesus Christ was strengthening him. Joan Kroc wanted for The Salvation Army Kroc Center to serve as a “beacon of hope” for the community. Whatever your challenges may be, we want our programs and services to serve as a beacon of hope for you, as we look together toward the ultimate beacon of hope that is found in the strength of Jesus Christ. Joe Muth Assistant Director of Operations & Mission Integration

ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS GENERAL KROC CENTER FAQs
Q. Who can be a member of the Kroc Center? A. Everyone is welcome! Guest passes are available for people who are not members, and the general public is encouraged to sign up for programs. We do offer discounted program rates for members. Q. Can my child come to the Kroc Center alone? A. Children must be at least 12 years of age to be onsite without an adult 18 years or older. Q. Are Kroc Center programs affordable? A. The Kroc Center strives to price all fee based programs fairly and accessibly. All programs are priced to cover the cost of providing them. For those in our community who cannot afford to pay, we offer scholarships. For scholarship information, please call 619.269.1430. Q. Why does The Kroc Center need my money? A. Mrs. Kroc’s investment in this community was structured in a way that requires ongoing community support. Her endowment covers 41% of the Kroc Center’s $10 million annual budget. That means The Salvation Army Kroc Center must raise $6 million each year through community engagement including program service fees, membership dues, and fundraising efforts.

Membership fees are not prorated for partial months when the hold request is submitted.
GYM & WELLNESS FAQS Q. This is my first time attending a group exercise class; what do I need to do? A. Stop at the gym guest services after scanning your membership card. The attendant will scan your card a second time to check you into the appropriate class and provide you with a card that you’ll give to the instructor prior to the start of class. Q. JOAN KROC’S VISION
E
After touring San Diego, Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc, recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc donated $87 million to The Salvation Army to build the first Kroc Center in San Diego. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 27 in different stages of development.

WHY DOES THE PASTOR WEAR A UNIFORM? The Salvation Army uniform, with red epaulets, is the suit worn by our clergy (our officers) to identify who they are – just as Catholic and Episcopal priests wear clothing which easily identifies who they are. The two letters “S” on the uniform are said to represent the words “saved to serve” which is a suitable motto for The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army pastors are called officers. They have different ranks based on years in the organization. Some of the very committed church members are called soldiers. They are not pastors, but they also sometimes wear a uniform, but with a blue epaulet. The Salvation Army is one of the largest ministries in the world, built on service and acceptance. At a worship service you will see the pastor in a uniform, but you are likely to be sitting next to a person in shorts and flip-flops. Please come as you are and remember that while the uniform is unusual, it is a wonderful tradition which represents people ready to welcome you and be of service to those in need.

HELLO FROM THE VOLUNTEER MANAGER I started working at the Kroc Center more than 10 years ago as a figure skating instructor in the Ice Arena. I enjoyed working here so much that I applied to be a full-time employee and am now the Kroc Center’s Volunteer Manager. While I still coach a few days a week, my main focus is growing our amazing volunteer department. More than 300 active volunteers currently donate their time and talents at the Kroc Center; we’d love for you to help us continue to support our community! Best,
Janet Higley-Reade
