Be a Hero Dear Friends, Mrs. Joan Kroc’s vision was to provide world-class programs to children, adults and seniors in our service area regardless of their financial circumstance. Keeping Mrs. Kroc’s vision alive is something we strive for at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, a 12.4-acre family support, education, recreation, and cultural arts center made possible by a generous gift from the late philanthropist. Since 2002, thousands of community members have attended programs at The Salvation Army Kroc Center that Do the Most Good in their lives physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually with the support of our scholarship program. This is accomplished through our 9th Annual HEROES Program and Scholarship Campaign, a fundraising effort that provides financial assistance to program participants of all ages. We aim to raise $100,000 this year to continue to extend scholarships to more than 2,000 community members so they, too, have access to life-changing opportunities at the Kroc Center.

All funds raised during last year’s campaign were used to provide those in need participate in Kroc Center programs, including camp, dance, music, junior theatre, karate, swimming, ice skating, hockey, and memberships. Thanks to your generosity, 900 weeks of day camp were thoroughly enjoyed by 150 children, 205 children learned to swim, and 1,500 food boxes were given to hungry families. As we prepare for this exciting eight-week campaign (March 31-June 2), I would like to invite you to participate as a donor or volunteer campaigner. Whether this is your first time hearing about the campaign, or you’re a campaign veteran, we need your help as we combine the power of passion, relationships and volunteerism to transform the lives of people within our community. Will you join us in continuing to help our neighbors in need? Yours in making a difference, Major Rick Peacock The Salvation Army Kroc Center Executive Director
The Heroes Campaign made all Of this possible last year
Children spent the summer meeting new friends, swimming, playing sports, doing art projects, learning ice skate, and engaging in character building curriculum. Day Camp scholarships provide a lifetime of fond memories.

Parents witnessed their child score for the Kroc Center Youth Basketball team--but more importantly watched their humble reaction, which demonstrated a true understanding of sportsmanship.
Children interested in acting got a role in the Kroc Kids Junior Theatre Company’s production of “Into the Woods Jr”. Others learned to play the piano or had their artistic talent nurtured in fine arts class.
Seniors stayed fit in group land and water exercise classes, engaged in social activities with one another, took computer classes, completed their taxes for free, gardened with toddlers, and developed new friendships.

Josefina Lopez is a mother of one; her child was diagnosed with Autism at an early age. And although, autism can bring setbacks, Josefina is thankful for the opportunities the Heroes Program and Scholarship Campaign has provided for her son. Upon receiving a scholarship, Josefina’s son began to attend Day Camp. “The Day Camp really helped my son being around more kids. MEET BARRETT
Barrett Powell’s transformation has been energetic and evident. Thanks to the Kroc Center’s Heroes Program and Scholarship Campaign, Barrett received a Kroc Center Gym Membership, during a financially binding time, for little cost. “Before I started working out at the Kroc Center my health was not so great. I really wanted to change that,” she shared. With a diabetes scare from her doctor, Barrett knew she had to take matters into her own hands. Now, in control of her own health, Barrett feels unstoppable and especially thankful. “To those who have donated to make these scholarships possible, thank you; you are changing lives,” she exclaimed. “I hope that the community will realize it is so important, in San Diego, to donate to the [Heroes] Scholarship Program because you are actually helping children, single parents and families that don’t have such a great economic situation.” Through her own scholarship experience, Barrett now believes it is her duty to pay it forward. “[The scholarship] gives me strength and focus. It gives me the physical health and clarity of mind to be able to do so many things that contribute to the world,” she celebrated.

JOAN KROC’S VISION After touring San Diego, Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc, recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc donated $87 million to The Salvation Army to build the first Kroc Center in San Diego. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 26 Kroc Centers nationwide.

STRAWBERRY FIELD REOPENING Strawberry Field in Liverpool, England, was a site once dear to the famous Beatles musician, John Lennon’s heart. Donated to The Salvation Army, Strawberry Field hosted the city’s most vulnerable children from 1936-2005. One of those children was John Lennon, who experienced a tumultuous childhood. The safe space served as the inspiration to the popular Beatles song, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’. “It’s no secret that Strawberry Field was special to John Lennon – it mattered to him,” shared Major Drew McCombe, Divisional Leader for The Salvation Army in North West England. Thus, in honor of 50 years since the song’s release, Strawberry Field is reopening to the public. McCombe continues, “We’re going to inspire people to become involved in the project in any way they can, to create a pivotal place in the lives of young people and a must-see destination for

First, Strawberry Field will serve as a place that provides sustainable employment for young people with learning disabilities. LOST & FOUND All items left in the Kroc Center will be collected and stored behind the Guest Services Desk in the venue in which they were found. Smaller items are kept in a box for safe keeping. Staff will attempt to contact individuals in the case that a name is associated with the lost item. Each Sunday, all items remaining will be bagged with a label noting the week, stored for an additional week, then donated.
LOCKERS Lockers are for day use only. Members and guests may bring their own lock each day and take their belongings home after exercising. Items left in day use lockers will be removed and stored, with the locker number noted, in a similar fashion as lost and found items. Individuals with expired memberships will be contacted to obtain their items from reserved lockers and items will be stored for pick-up for one month following contact. After this date the items will be donated.

The attendant will scan your card a second time to check you into the appropriate class and provide you with a class token that you’ll give to the instructor prior to the start of class. Q. Do I always have to check-in for a class? A. Yes. The check-in program ensures that we maintain class capacities based on room size and are able to monitor statistics. Q.
