Kroc Feature Article
KROC It’s more than a job, it’s a
thing Darlene has gone from lifeguard, to instructor, to Aquatic Program Lead, and all the while she never thought of it as just a job.
Story by Beau Becraft
Photography by Adam Duesterhaus
D
arlene Steinkamp embodies the Three I’s of The Kroc Center – Inspire, Instruct, and Involve. Throughout her time as part of The Kroc Center’s Aquatics Department, Darlene has evolved both professionally and personally. At age 15, Steinkamp, like many others her age, was seeking a part-time job. “I always thought being a lifeguard would be fun,” she recalls. But she had little to no experience in the water. Still, she was undeterred in pursuing this new venture. “The process [at first] was difficult,” she says. “I never learned the true strokes, so I had to rely completely on athletic ability to get through the initial swim test. Then came the book test, which wasn’t as hard thanks to having a great teacher.” Following those initial tests, Darlene knew that aquatics was her calling and she knew that The Kroc Center was the place she wanted to work. And thanks to great training, she became a confident and skilled swimmer before being hired as a lifeguard at The Kroc. “I knew I wanted to teach swim lessons. First, I read an entire book about how to teach children to swim. I would sit and watch lifeguards teach lessons while I took mental notes,” she says. “Eventually, I was able to get in the water and teach beginner lessons.”

(l-r) Darlene with Aquatic Specialist, Nanette Johnson
Darlene says that it’s never enough for her to be good at something. Though she was finally teaching lessons, she was determined not to stop there. “I want to be the best at everything I do,” Darlene says. “So, after my lifeguarding shifts, I would ask Nanette Johnson (Aquatics Specialist) and Naomi Huber (former Head Lifeguard and current Special Events Coordinator of The Kroc Center) to teach me proper techniques. Then, I would practice repeatedly until I had it down.” She attributes her close relationship with her students to her experience in learning to become a skilled swimmer herself. “I understand how hard the process is for these kids. I’ve been through it. And I think that’s what truly helps me relate to them as they learn to become proficient swimmers, too.” Steinkamp’s determination and drive allowed her to continue climbing the ladder. Before long, she found herself in the position of Head Lifeguard, which included new responsibilities and more opportunities to challenge herself. But, she didn’t stop there. “It took a long time and a lot of hard work to become head guard,” she recalls. “I’m proud of everything I have accomplished in life, but I’m never satisfied. There is always something I can do to better myself.” And better
herself she did. Darlene quickly moved up from Head Lifeguard to Aquatic Program Lead, yet another position in which she found herself faced with new responsibilities and opportunities. Included in those responsibilities were teaching fellow and future lifeguards, leading and training all positions within the aquatics department, and more. The position became another chance for Darlene to shine and put her can-do attitude to work. “As the aquatics program lead, I do have a lot of responsibilities. But, this doesn’t feel like work to me,” she states. “I love what I do. I aspire to keep finding new ways to teach children and be able to adapt to their learning style.”
means the world to me that they run to hug me when they see me or they don’t want their lesson to end. I love the time I spend with my students,” she offers.
Darlene’s involvement at The Kroc Center doesn’t stop merely in the aquatics department, however. “She is the first to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. And in a facility that offers so much, that extra hand can make a world of difference,” Nanette Johnson says of Darlene. “When I tell people I work,” says Darlene, “I tell them I work at The Kroc Center – not a specific venue within The Kroc Center. I love The Kroc as a whole, and I love lending a helping - Darlene Steinkamp, hand wherever it is Aquatic Program Lead needed.”
The Kroc is where I was able to grow as a person. It helped shape me into who I am today.
Her desire to continually learn and be accommodating to children of all ages and skill levels is something that parents have taken notice of. Aquatics Specialist Nanette Johnson has seen firsthand the impact that Darlene has had on families. “Darlene is able to see a need and meet it,” Nanette offers. “She adapts. And that’s something parents really respond to. In fact, there are some families that will wait until Darlene is available to teach lessons simply because of the trust Darlene has built with their children. It’s a true testament to what an impact she has made since she became a lifeguard over five years ago.” It’s the biggest compliment for Darlene, too, who says, “every child I teach has a piece of my heart and I want to see them succeed. It
Through it all, she feels her experience at The Kroc Center has prepared her for whatever comes her way in life. “I started working at The Kroc when I was 15. It has prepared me for so much more than just college,” she says. “The Kroc is where I was able to grow as a person. It helped shape me into who I am today. The support system I’ve developed here makes me feel like there’s nothing that I cannot accomplish. Nanette has been such a great resource and an even better mentor to me. In all, The Kroc Center is my family. It’s where I’ve met some of my best friends. I would not be where I am today without the guidance and support of Nanette and The Kroc Center.” If you have an inspirational story to tell, share it at: krocquincy.org/stories

Weight loss is his
SPECIALTY! Kroc Personal Trainer Ryan recently became the area’s only NASM Certified Weight Loss Specialist.
T
he goal of those who work with a personal trainer is achievement – the achievement of goals both personal and physical. But what are the goals of the personal trainer? In the case of Ryan Pabisiak, a personal trainer at The Kroc Center, goals work both ways. Ryan creates goals for his personal training clients. He helps his clients achieve those goals. And when he’s not doing that he’s creating and achieving goals for himself.
Ryan Pabisiak, Certified Kroc Personal Trainer Ryan has over 12 years of personal training experience and has been with The Kroc for over 6 years.

Recently Pabisiak earned his weight loss certification from The National Academy of Sports Medicine. It’s an academy he knows well, having previously studied under NASM when working to become a certified personal trainer. It was the institute’s prestige that encouraged Ryan to return and achieve his new certification. “All of the programs are developed from comprehensive scientific research supported by The National Association of Sports Medicine Research Institute at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,” he says. To earn the certification Pabisiak studied the health effects of obesity, physiology and psychology of weight control, avoiding and breaking weight plateaus, nutrition strategies for weight management, and basic training methods for weight loss. Throughout his studies he found a wealth of interesting information about weight loss, particularly the obesity epidemic currently faced by the nation. “Many do not fully grasp the magnitude of obesity,” Ryan says. “To facilitate a better understanding of
the scale of people considered obese we have to take a look at some United States population statistics. The current US population stands at 323 million and 38% of those individuals are obese. This exhibits a significantly elevated risk for severe health complications.” Those who seek to take matters into their own hands in losing weight may be doing more harm than good however. Pabisiak says there are many common misconceptions when it comes to losing weight both safely and effectively. “One of the biggest misconceptions is the manipulation of micronutrients,” he says. “You need all of those nutrients. You need protein, you need carbohydrates and fat from your daily calorie intake for a healthy weight loss experience.” Having learned this information on the path to earning his weight loss certification Ryan now looks forward to helping his personal training clients lose weight and keep it off the correct way. “This new certification allows me, as a health professional, to develop and implement a safe and effective plan for weight loss [for my personal training clients],” says Ryan. “I can define the different diseases or conditions that accompany obesity, teach to my clients the scientific aspect of weight loss and control, and also educate them on ways to handle psychological obstacles and set goals for themselves.”

125 Years of
This year the Quincy Salvation Army celebrates 125 years of serving the community.
Quincy, Illinois Story by Matt Schmidt
2018 will be a special year for The Salvation Army as it celebrates 125 years of serving Quincy, Illinois and the surrounding area. January 21, 1893 was the official charter date that established the Quincy Corps. On that day in 2018, The Salvation Army will kick off a year-long celebration with a special guest. Carol Jaudes is director of the USA Eastern Territory’s Special Events & Arts Ministries Bureau. But before that, she spent five years on Broadway performing in the critically acclaimed musical “CATS” as Jennyanydots. During her visit to Kroc Church to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Quincy Salvation Army, Carol will perform her one-woman show titled “The Three Bonnets.” She will highlight the lives of the three
most important women in Salvation Army history. Her performance will be followed by a luncheon featuring past Salvation Army officers stationed in Quincy along with current and former advisory board members. The Quincy Salvation Army is planning to hold special events throughout the year to not only highlight its history, but to let the community know about all the programs and services it offers. Those include the emergency shelter, food pantry, disaster services, youth camps, and the family store. While many things have changed in 125 years, the mission of The Salvation Army has remained on track

since day one. That is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army is first and foremost a church. Its founder, William Booth, was mainly interested in saving souls. But he realized that social improvement might have to come before religious conversion. So he built a social program of food kitchens and housing which became the foundation of what The Salvation Army is still known for today.
women and families. It also has a food pantry and daily bread line that serves thousands of people each year. The new Family Store opened in 2015 to offer more retail space and jobs in the community. Donated items that are sold at the store help fund services at the emergency shelter. Staff and volunteers with the Quincy Salvation Army also put in countless hours to bring the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center to town. It opened in 2011 with a vision to be a place of Inspiration, Instruction,

Since coming to Quincy in 1893, The Salvation Army has provided food for the hungry and safe shelter for the homeless. Before long, disaster services became part of The Salvation Army. Local staff and volunteers would respond to fires, tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes to serve drinks and meals to first responders, workers and victims. Today, the Quincy Salvation Army runs a 24-hour emergency shelter for men,
