Kroc Feature Article

This is Why I Kroc

Sara Speser and her son Caius

Sara and Kiley tell us what motivates them and why they love The Kroc community so much.

S

o many people from so many walks of life come through our doors every single day for a variety of reasons. Some tell us it’s for the wide selection of group fitness classes. Some prefer the therapeutic benefits our pool’s current river provides. Others rave about the large selection of top-of-the-line fitness equipment both in our cardio room and weight area. Regardless of why they choose The Kroc as their home, one resounding item remains constant, they come for the community. Here at The Kroc Center, we pride ourselves on offering classes, services, and activities everyone in the community can enjoy. Community is in our name and who we are as an organization. At the root of that community is the people, the individuals that support us and allow us to be here and do what we love to do every single day. Sara Speser, and her son Caius, have been Kroc members for a little over 5 years. Upon moving to Quincy from Des Moines, Iowa, Sara was initially drawn to our Les Mills group fitness offerings, a staple in her workout routine while she lived in Des Moines. Fearing a much smaller community wouldn’t have the many larger-city amenities she was used to, she was ecstatic to learn we offered these world-class fitness classes. “Moving to a new community is hard for many reasons and it was great that I would be able to continue my

16

Summer 2018 | krocquincy.org | 217-222-5762

fitness journey with classes that I knew and loved,” stated Sara. Sara appreciates our continued commitment to having up-to-date fitness equipment that is in good working order. The Kroc has a policy of renewing around 25% of our cardio machines annually, ensuring the best possible experience for both members and guests. “I love the fitness equipment and how new models are always being cycled through. The equipment is very well maintained and is always clean.” Aside from Sara enjoying our amenities, her son Caius also benefits from the continued commitment we put forth 7 years ago when we opened our doors. “Caius has experienced so much of this community through Kroc Center programs. He knows more people in the community than I do through his active involvement at the Kroc. I work full-time and knowing he is experiencing so many diverse things in a safe setting is very comforting.” At The Kroc Center, education is as much about our vision as is physical well-being. “I really like that a literacy instruction is a part of summer Camp Kroc," stated Sara. "It’s really helped ensure Caius maintains his academics through the summer." One unique aspect of The Kroc Center's summer camp was that all campers received a Read and Learn Bible. "Caius asking me to

Kroc Feature Article read his new Bible to him was the spark that ignited my faith in Jesus Christ. Caius' faith continues to amaze me." Another valued member, Kiley McGlauchlen, further reiterates what so many often say, that The Kroc has helped her get back on track, in more ways than one. “I have always enjoyed group fitness classes and The Kroc Center offered a wide variety of classes in the early morning and after work, which met my needs. I continue to be a member because The Kroc continues to meet my ever-changing needs.”

“One of my favorite things about The Kroc Center is that the front desk attendants work hard to know your name and to greet you as you approach. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. “Kroc Strong The people there make a difference. Their friendly smiles and warmth does means being not go unnoticed.” strong in health,

both mentally and physically. When I leave the building after a great workout, I always feel energized and renewed both mentally and physically.”

Upon giving birth to twins in 2012, Kiley wanted to belong to a place her entire family could enjoy. After all, it wasn’t just her that she had to keep thinking about, it was everybody in the - Kiley McGlauchlen household. Coming here, she felt at Kroc Member since 2014 ease - like she was part of the family. She loved how when she walked up to the Control Desk to workout, the attendants would almost always have her already checked-in, since they knew her name by heart. It was those little things that really stuck with her.

This summer The Kroc will once again be offering our popular Camp Kroc. This 12-week summer camp is for members and non-members and features supervised all day excursions to city parks, social events, activities, and community functions. Kiley has already made plans to have both her kids enrolled and hopes others might enjoy the benefits and added comfort of knowing their children are learning and growing in the best possible ways.

Heart Hand

Development + Planned Giving

With “Heart to God and Hand to Man”, the Quincy Salvation Army offers a hand up to individuals and families in need.

to God,

Your donations help us feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and provide other services to help families get through a crisis. As The Salvation Army celebrates 125 years of serving the Quincy area, we’d like to introduce you to the employees who are “Doing the Most Good” on a daily basis to help these individuals and families overcome hardship and adversity.

to Man

management, along with rental and utility services to name just a few. The service of giving is a blessing itself. I am blessed to work for The Salvation Army and be a part of helping thousands of people every year. What do you enjoy most about your job? The relationship with the clients and staff. I have been blessed to meet and establish relationships with amazing people through our shelter and family services programs. What’s your best memory of changing someone’s life? We have many stories of progress and success related to the clients we serve. One of my favorite stories is helping a young man who transitioned into permanent supportive housing for persons with mental health issues. He was struggling for several years and we provided support to him until we could find an appropriate placement. During that time there were many difficult situations, but the staff worked together to try our best to improve his quality of life. Today, he’s doing very well and will often visit us.

Heidi Welty

Regional Social Services Director What do you do? I provide oversight to both Quincy and Hannibal’s social services programs, which includes the emergency shelter and family services. I write and manage grants which provide rental, utility, and essential needs and support to the homeless or those at-risk of being homeless. What kind of services are you able to provide? We provide food pantry, emergency shelter, counseling, case

Debbie Stumb

Food Pantry Coordinator What do you do? I am in charge of all food donations. I prepare the food boxes for our clients and I oversee the breadline and shelter kitchen. I also do the shopping for the pantry and the shelter.

Development + Planned Giving What kind of services are you able to provide? At the shelter, we provide three meals a day for residents. At the pantry, we give out food boxes every weekday with enough food to provide at least three full meals for a family. Individuals and families can get a food box every 90 days. We also have the breadline every morning, which includes bread and sweets donated by Hy-Vee, County Market and other local businesses. What do you enjoy most about your job? Being able to help others. What’s your best memory of changing someone’s life? A man on oxygen would often come through the breadline, but often had to rest for a bit to catch his breath. I told him to start pulling up in the parking lot and we would just run his stuff out to him so he wouldn’t have to get out of his vehicle. One day he called to say he had fallen and fractured his back and could not leave his house. So now every Friday, we take him bread and sweets from the breadline to last him for several days and when he’s eligible for a food box, we deliver that to him. He really looks forward to our visits and we know he’s eating.

Andreana Hamlin

Pathway of Hope Case Manager What do you do? My job is to provide case management services to families with children under the age of 18 through our Pathway of Hope program. I assist each family in working toward long and short term goals that will help them achieve the ultimate goal of transitioning from poverty to income stability. What kind of services are you able to provide? I meet with the Pathway of Hope clients one-on-one to provide budgeting classes, help with resumes, job searches, housing assistance and anything else the client may need assistance with to achieve his or her goals. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy my clients. Each individual and his or her situation teaches me something different every day.

Katie Dinkheller

Emergency Social Services Case Manager What do you do? I am in charge of the financial assistance for Family Services, which includes our monthly budget and grants. What kind of services are you able to provide? My program provides financial assistance for mainly rent or utilities. Depending on funding available, at times I am also able to assist with transportation, clothing vouchers, emergency medication, and work supplies. What do you enjoy most about your job? I love seeing the difference our services make in our clients’ lives. Many individuals are extremely thankful for the good we do. It’s gratifying to know your job allows you to positively impact those in need. What’s your best memory of changing someone’s life? It’s hard to pick just one, but my best memory would have to be helping a particularly kind woman and her husband. The first time I was able to assist them was with a utility bill that prevented their electricity from being shutoff. She hugged and thanked me multiple times. Some months later, their refrigerator went out. After going through the paperwork and presenting her case to Unmet Needs, I was able to get the couple a side by side refrigerator/freezer that was in great condition. The joy and gratitude she expressed was priceless.

What’s your best memory of changing someone’s life? I signed one of my clients up for the Good News of Christmas program and on the day of distribution, my client cried, hugged me and thanked me over and over because she had been stressed trying to figure out how she would come up with the extra money to buy Christmas presents. Not only did she receive gifts for her children and herself, she also received funding to pay her past due rent and household items for her family. She was very grateful.
