A NOTE FROM THE OFFICERS Greetings in the name of Jesus, from your Quincy Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center! As we move into the fall season we want to remind you this beautiful Community Center is here for you to enjoy. We’ve added several new programs and are celebrating another great year of serving the Quincy area! (See page 2 for information about our 7th Anniversary Celebration.) Two of our new programs include the Youth in Fitness Classes (see page 28 for complete details), and yoga and gentle yoga classes (see page 23 for class times). In addition, we welcome Keith Wiemelt to our education and fine arts department. Keith has hit the ground running with several new music classes, including ukulele, guitar, and bucket drumming, along with art classes such as book folding and landscape painting. We invite you to make plans to enjoy one or more of these new classes (see page 16). Bring a friend or two and have some fun learning something new!

With fall brings our annual community Thanksgiving (November 22) and Christmas (Tuesday, December 25) meals. You won’t want to miss these wonderful events. Contact Jeremy Koren, special events coordinator, if you would like to volunteer to help serve or deliver meals. Both meals are served from 11am-12:30pm on the actual holiday. Whether it’s swimming, golf, piano, or guitar lessons, participating in our after school programs, or enjoying a fitness class, worship service, or a sports league, we are here to Inspire, Instruct, and Involve you. We are Inspired by God’s Holy Spirit, Instructed by God’s Word, and Involved in God’s work. God bless you!
Dear Kroc Center Members, The Salvation Army Kroc Center has consistently engaged our members to seek their feedback on how we can better serve you. Our desire has always been to add value to your membership while also expressing our appreciation for your dedication and loyalty to this organization. Your comments and suggestions have resulted in various changes over the past seven years, which we know have resulted in more positive experiences for our patrons. As such, we have been investigating the feasibility of installing a sauna at our facility based on your past feedback. A sauna has consistently been the most requested item by members since we first administered our annual membership survey in 2012. As you may know, we administered a short survey on saunas back in April to gauge your specific interests and feelings on installing a sauna. We quickly realized from those survey results that the term “sauna” means different things to different people. There were also some strong feelings on where the sauna should be located, and whether we should install one coed sauna, or separate saunas for males and females. During this same period, we engaged our Territorial Legal and Risk Management departments to determine if there were any issues surrounding saunas and determine the risk associated to adding this amenity and the impact on potential insurance requirements. We also engaged an engineering firm in determining costs to design and install a sauna at our facility. As we assembled the feedback and reports from each of these sources, the information indicated that installing a sauna (or saunas) was not a viable option. The rationale specifically points to the risk management and liability concerns raised by our Legal and Risk Management departments, as well as the additional cost to supervise and maintain the sauna. Although a great amount of time and effort was invested to develop this amenity, the decision has been made to forego the addition of a sauna in the best interest of our organization, the facility and our members. You, our valued Kroc Center members, are encouraged to continue to offer suggestions and feedback. The Salvation Army Kroc Center Staff are fully committed to enhancing your member experience and building on our status as the premier community center in the tristate area. Thank you for your ongoing patronage and commitment to the Kroc Center. Sincerely, The Salvation Army Kroc Center Staff

Sophia’s journey began back in 2016 when she decided she needed to do something. She wanted to make a change, but she wasn’t sure how to start her health and fitness journey. She knew 16 year-olds didn’t have to feel the way she did. Thankfully, with the support of her family, friends, The Kroc Center, and especially her mom, her trek to a new her was well guided. Maria, Sophia’s mom, teaches a variety of group classes at The Kroc Center so it was naturally a great place to start. “I liked having my mom there, leading the class. The classes have such an awesome atmosphere,” Sophia stated with a smile. “Everyone wants to get to know you and encourage you.” Sophia shared that she was gone for two weeks on a school trip and when she returned everyone was asking her where she had been. “It was a good feeling to know that I was missed.” Two of her favorite fitness classes are Les Mills™ BODYPUMP™ and BODYFLOW™. “I love how I feel after both classes,” stated Sophia. “It’s empowering. I feel good inside and out.” Not one to be complacent, Sophia has started working with Kroc Center Personal Trainer Debbie Bruce. Training with Debbie helps Sophia expand her knowledge of fitness and how to continually improve what she is doing in the gym. “Sophia is very passionate about her health, fitness, and is dedicated to achieve new personal gains. She is an inspiration to other young women to get up early and prioritize health and wellness ” stated Debbie. Since she began her commitment to become healthier by changing her diet and level of activity, Sophia has lost 40 pounds, gained muscle, and now has flexibility she never dreamed she would have.

Sophia’s Fitness Journey Welcome to the Kroc Community
When asked if she had any words of encouragement for anyone who may want to start attending group fitness classes Sophia said, “definitely come and show up! That’s half of the battle!”
For more information about The Kroc Center’s group fitness classes, personal trainers, and what the facility has to offer, call 217-231-5638.
This fall Sophia will be headed off to William Woods University where she will be majoring in nursing and studying American Sign Language. In addition to signing for the deaf, and helping people with a medical degree, Sophia has decided she wants to help others with their fitness journey as well. “I look forward to following in my mom’s footsteps and becoming a Les Mills™ instructor.” Fall 2018 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762

Adams County Taking Initiative on Obesity Now!
Did you know that Adams County is the most obese county in the state of Illinois?
A
ccording to 24/7 Wall Street, Adams County ranked as the most obese county in Illinois. Adams County has an average of 37 percent of its residents considered obese which is well above the state average of 29.4 percent. This statistic should be very concerning to the entire community. This information not only has ramifications now, but also holds consequences for the county’s future. The Salvation Army Kroc Center has partnered with the YMCA, the Adams County Health Department, Blessing Hospital, KHQA, Quincy Medical Group, and additional community partners to jumpstart Adams County into ACTION!
choose one facility. Participants will have the opportunity to attend free health seminars, and gain free access to educational information on fitness, wellness, and nutrition.
WHO CAN TAKE PART? The ACTION program is open to all Adams County residents along with anyone employed by an Adams County business. Participants (8+) must stay committed throughout the program to receive free benefits.
ACTION participants are invited to attend free health seminars. Presenters from The Kroc Center, YMCA, and community will cover a variety of topics such as nutrition, food preparation, developing healthy goals, and eating on a budget. Please visit KrocQuincy.org for a complete list of dates, topics, and locations.

Youth in Fitness Program
It makes me feel good that Avery wants to attend classes. I’m excited because it is a great opportunity for her to learn how to be fit and healthy.
”
MEET DIANE & AVERY
Youth in Fitness Classes SMALL CHANGES CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE, ESPECIALLY IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN. On April 8, 2018 local media reported Adams County as the state’s most obese county. “Upon hearing that 37% of adults in Adams County are considered to be obese, we began asking ourselves how can we change the course of the future to ensure that Adams County no longer holds such a terrifying title,” stated Operations Director Chad Rodgers. “We can’t change the past, but we can begin to enact change in the present.” The Kroc’s immediate response to this pervasive issue was implementing its Youth in Fitness Classes initiative, which kicked off June 1, 2018.

We want to help children learn at an early age how to be active & develop healthy habits.
”
MELISSA HARRIS Fitness and Wellness Specialist
Fall 2018 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762
The initiative allows children ages 8-11 to participate in select group fitness classes with a parent/guardian or attend with a parent/guardian present in the fitness studio. Children ages 12-15 must have a parent present in the facility while the child attends the class. “As a fitness facility and foremost community center, hearing the results of the 24/7 Wall Street report was eyeopening. We want to be sure The Kroc Center is always providing options for the youth in our community to take part in. We strive to teach children healthy habits that they can carry with them into adulthood. By launching the Youth in Fitness Classes initiative, we hope to gain further insight into the needs of our community and develop solutions for a healthier future.” stated Fitness and Wellness Specialist Melissa Harris. by Magan Hall Marketing Communications Assistant
Since the first day the Youth in Fitness Classes initiative began, Diane and her granddaughter, Avery, age 11, have been attending group fitness classes together. Diane has been attending classes since she joined The Kroc Center as a charter member in 2011. When she is not going to class with Avery, Diane attends Fit 4 Life, a group fitness class for beginners and seniors. As a grandparent, Diane is excited that Avery can now attend group fitness classes. “It makes me feel good that Avery wants to attend classes,” stated Diane. “I’m excited because it is a great opportunity for her to learn how to be fit and healthy.” Avery has always wanted to participate in group fitness classes, but she was not old enough. The Youth in Fitness Classes initiative has allowed her to be active while she is not in school and hang out with her grandma while they do something together that they both enjoy. Avery is a dancer and believes that attending group fitness classes have allowed her to stay in shape and become more flexible at a time when she is not taking lessons.
DIANE EBBING Member of The Kroc Center
Diane enjoys being a member of The Kroc Center because the members and employees are very nice, the facility is clean, and the employees know her by name. She enjoys the group fitness classes and the Aquatics Center. “The lifeguards do an awesome job,” stated Diane. “They help to create a safe and inviting experience each time I bring any of my grandkids to swim.” Avery enjoys The Ledge, the pool, and how nice people are to her while she is at The Kroc Center. When she is taking a fitness class, she enjoys spending time with the ladies in the class. “The ladies always take time to talk to her and get to know her,” stated Diane. “I get a lot of hugs,” added Avery with a grin. When asked if they had a favorite fitness class memory, Avery was quick to say that surviving BODYFLOW™ and laughing about it afterward has been her favorite memory. “I thought we were going to die,” said Diane, as Avery giggled about their experience. Avery intends to continue attending group fitness classes once school starts in the fall. “Whenever I have breaks or don’t have homework, I will definitely come to The Kroc Center to go to class!”
The duo’s favorite classes are Kroc Dance Fitness & Pound®. “I like the music and I love to dance,” said Avery. “We love Maria (a group fitness instructor). She makes the class fun for us,” added Diane. “Maria really does go the extra mile in her classes.”

Development & Planned Giving
Development & Planned Giving Starting about ten years ago, he began taking out charitable gift annuities to support The Salvation Army. He called them win-win because he was able to help The Salvation Army feed and shelter people, while earning a fixed income for life. About a year before he died, Jim used a transfer on death instrument (TODI) to donate his house to The Salvation Army. These are the gifts we knew about. Come to find out, this generous man also made The Salvation Army the beneficiary on several of his bank and retirement accounts by making them payable on death. These turned out to be his largest gifts yet. Because of his generous spirit, detailed planning and proper wording, his wishes to help those in need in his community are already fulfilling his legacy of giving back.
or part of your IRA, the full value of the gift is transferred tax-free at your death and your estate receives an estate tax charitable deduction.
ADVANTAGES OF BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION 1. EASY TO DO – Most plan administrators have one easy form to complete and return.
2. REVOCABLE – You can modify or revoke the
beneficiary designations at any time during your lifetime.
3. PRIVATE – No one knows who has been added,
removed or changed but you and your plan administrator.
4. INEXPENSIVE – In most cases, there is no need to change your will or trust, thus saving legal fees. Even before you create a will or trust, you can designate or make beneficiary changes.
Legacy
Leaving a
T
here are many ways to leave a legacy. Jim Cahill of Quincy was able to do that throughout his life, and at the end of his life. Jim had a passion for learning and teaching. In his professional career as a teacher, he taught music, psychology and sociology to thousands of students.
Then he spent more than 20 years as a volunteer mentor to first grade students, helping them to read and discover new things. Jim never stopped learning. He would read books on religion, history and government along with the occasional mystery. He loved to talk about the books he read, or education and politics, and he was eager to hear your opinions on those matters. Jim’s intelligence, compassion, sincerity, and humor shined in those conversations.

HOW TO REQUEST A CHANGE OF BENEFICIARY 1. Call or write to the company’s administrator and request a change of beneficiary form. Many plan administrators make these forms available on the company website. Jim was also a year round outdoor enthusiast. He loved to ride his bike. He would ride thousands of miles every year, in the heat of summer and even in bitter cold winter temperatures. He also loved to ski, often leaving people much younger in his wake as he hit the slopes in Colorado or went cross country skiing through a local park. For many who knew Jim, this is his legacy.
Jim left another legacy of helping people in need. He said he supported The Salvation Army because it provides immediate help to those in need and does the most good with the money it’s given.
Jim was able to help The Salvation Army feed and shelter people, while earning a fixed income for life. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FUTURE If you are interested in making a gift to The Salvation Army, but are also concerned about your future needs, keep in mind that beneficiary designation gifts are among the most flexible of all charitable gifts. Even after you complete the beneficiary designation form, you can take distributions or withdrawals from your retirement, investment or bank account and continue to freely use your account. You can also change your mind at any time in the future for any reason, including if you have a loved one who needs your financial help.
GIFTING RETIREMENT ASSETS A retirement asset, such as an IRA account, makes an excellent gift to The Salvation Army. If the IRA were given to your family, much of the value may be lost through estate and income taxes. By designating The Salvation Army as the beneficiary of all

...on the Run! “The Ring-A-Bell Run is an annual event,” stated Marketing Manager Carolyn Carpenter. “The title of the run is tied into the bell-ringing that has become synonymous with The Salvation Army during the Christmas season.” Proceeds from the fund raiser will be put towards The Salvation Army Christmas campaign locally, which provides Christmas food baskets, toys for children, Christmas dinner, and more for those in need throughout the tri-state area. “Funds also support year-round services such as the organization’s food pantry, rent and utility assistance, and the operation of the emergency shelter,” stated Director of Development Patty Douglas.

Hello!
by Magan Hall, Marketing Communications Assistant
I’m a donated shirt, and although I’m just a shirt, I’m doing the most good. You probably don’t remember me, but I remember you. We met on a windy Monday. You were on your way to work and running late when you set your coffee on top of the car in order to unload everything you were taking into work. The wind blew over your coffee and it stained the shirt you were wearing. You shoved everything back into the car and ran to the nearest store. You rushed to the sale rack, started thumbing through your size, looked at my price tag, mumbled something about having to make this work, and took me to the cash register. I know we met under strained circumstance, but you have no idea how happy I was to meet you! I’m always going to
me in the box, I saw that the truck said “Donate Goods.” The next thing I know, I’m being taken out of the box by an unfamiliar woman. Someone said that she was a volunteer. I’m not sure what a volunteer is, but she was very nice! She gave me a new tag and placed me on what felt like a really big closet. This closet wasn’t dark though, and I got to hangout with a lot of other shirts that had similar stories! After talking to a couple of my new friends I found out that you had donated me to The Salvation Army Family Store.
One day a woman picked me up. Her name is Mom; I think you two would get along! Life hasn’t been the easiest for her. She has two kids and until recently had worked several part-time jobs. Next Monday, Mom starts her new job, and she’s very excited. She is going to work in an office and be able see her kids be doing the most more! Before Mom had shopped You wore me to work that day, good for that person, because you did at The Family Store she didn’t and I don’t want to brag, but have anything that she could wear the most good when you donated me! because of me, you received a to work, but she met me and a few compliments! We had an few of my friends and now she has a closet full of clothes that amazing few years together, but people change and I started are new to her. She loves all of us! Can I tell you a secret? Her to realize that I just wasn’t fitting you anymore. I was so excited daughter wore me to school once; I loved it! every time I thought you were going to wear me, but you didn’t The day that Mom bought me, I and before long I ended up in the back of your closet. I was remember her thanking the women there for a long time. at the counter for her help. The One day, after giving up hope of seeing daylight or hearing women said something that I’ll another compliment again, you reached into the closet and never forget! She said, “It’s my grabbed my hanger! You put a funny sticker on my tag and pleasure! We’re here to serve our placed me outside. All day I watched people come into your yard community and do the most good.” and give you money. A couple of them held me up and looked So that day I decided that no matter at me, but I must not have been who wears me, I’m always going the right size. I remember that you to be doing the most good for that were disappointed because you person, because you did the most still had a lot of stuff sitting in your good when you donated me! yard when the day was over. You put me in a box and told the driver of the truck that pulled up to take me along with the furniture that you didn’t sell. Just before you put
