Welcome

As we enter a new decade, it brings attention to what moves us and makes us come together as a community. We hope the new season brings faith, good health, and balance to your life. Let The Kroc Center be a part of your community by becoming involved in some of our many programs and activities. As the promise of spring weather draws near, why not try something new? You’ll always feel welcome in one of our group fitness classes. The Kroc Center is the place to be for fitness, swimming lessons, golf, piano lessons, or our youth character development programs. We have something for you and your family to enjoy year-round.

The Kroc Community includes your spiritual well-being as well. Ask us about how you can become part of a Bible study and/or our congregation. God bless you.

K

roc Fit Kids is The Kroc Center’s newest youth development program designed to encourage kids to live healthier lifestyles. This free program gives children and families the opportunity to be fit, learn about nutrition, and gain insight on their bodies so they can make healthy decisions throughout their lives. “I love Kroc Fit Kids because it brings families together to be proactive about their overall wellness,” stated Kroc Fit Kids Liaison Beau Turgeon. Research shows Adams County as the most obese county in Illinois in 2018. The Kroc Center decided 12

Winter / Spring 2020 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762

to do something to combat the findings. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States putting children and adolescents at risk for poor health. Obesity prevalence among children and adolescence is too high.”

The goal of Kroc Fit Kids is to help each child reach their potential. Progress looks different for everyone. “It’s easy for children to be overlooked because they can’t get themselves to the facility to participate in the

various healthy activities,” stated Youth Development and Outreach Specialist, Jakin Logsdon. “We worked diligently to remove barriers and made the lessons free so kids from all demographics could have the opportunity to learn more about nutrition, health, and fitness.” Kroc Fit Kids features three components: Family Fun Nights, Fit Kids Series, and the Kid Fit Challenge. Logsdon stated, “We run a lot of incredible youth programs, but we wanted a further reach. There are so many remarkable children in our community and we wanted them to know The Kroc Center is here for them. You don’t have to have a membership; we don’t require a lengthy commitment. Come as often as you can I promise you’ll walk away with something great. Kroc Fit Kids is here to connect with youth, families, and schools.

I love Kroc Fit Kids because it brings families together to be proactive about their overall wellness.”

- Kroc Fit Kids Liaison, Beau Turgeon

This community center was designed with everyone in mind. The Kroc Center is meant to be a place for all ages at all stages of life. Family Fun Nights have been added so the learning continues after the session is over. We want participants to take these lessons home and instill this new mind-set into their daily lives. If we all work together and partner with one another, we can help children grow and thrive in an enriching environment.”

Visit The Kroc Center Welcome Desk and complete a Youth Ministry Registration Form to register. For more information, please contact Youth Development and Outreach Specialist Jakin Logsdon at 217-231-5667 or at Jakin.Logsdon@USC.SalvationArmy.org

Music gives children problem-solving skills, multi-tasking skills, and creative thinking skills. Music is one of the few activities that actually connects both sides of the brain. When playing an instrument, children are using the left and right sides of the brain simultaneously. Not many activities do that.

and how to hold the instrument, it makes a world of difference and gives you the excitement to teach day in and day out. The Kroc Center began offering private music lessons during the spring of 2019. Until that time only group music lessons had been offered. Keith found it was difficult to match ability levels in a group setting. He had some students who were beginners and some students who had a lot of experience. Having both levels in the same class made it challenging to give each student the attention they deserved. Moving to the private lesson structure has proved to be more beneficial for participants. “The Kroc Center now offers true private lessons, where each student is given one-on-one time with the instructor,” stated Keith. “We also offer group lessons of their own choosing. For example, we have two young ladies who take ukulele lessons together and we have several groups of siblings that come in and take lessons together. For many parents, the group lesson structure works well because it’s just one halfhour slot they have to plan for, as opposed to three separate time slots.”

“I believe parents should enroll their children in music lessons because music offers so many different wonderful life skills and traits that you can not only benefit from in music but in your everyday life,” stated Wiemelt. “Music gives children problem-solving skills, multi-tasking skills, and creative thinking skills. Music is one of the few activities that actually connects both sides of the brain. When playing an instrument, children are using the left and right sides of the brain simultaneously. Not many activities do that. I have my two oldest children in piano lessons right now. The time we spend working on the piano together at home is some of our favorite times of the day.” • Interested in enrolling your child in music lessons? Visit The Kroc Center Welcome Desk or call and register. Once your child is registered, Keith will contact you to set lesson dates and times that work best for your schedule.

Private music lessons have many benefits. If a student plays in their school band, the children far outnumber the number of band directors on staff. Due to the inability to be provided with one-on-one attention, a student may find themself confused about certain aspects of the musical instruction and need someone who can work with them on the areas that they are struggling to learn. In a private lesson setting, students have an instructor who has their complete attention for 30 minutes. During the 30-minute lesson, students can expect a warm-up period of about 2-3 minutes, a review of information covered during the previous week’s lesson, and to cover new materials and techniques. Students who start piano or guitar at a young age have an advantage when starting in a band or orchestra as they progress through school. The skills learned on the piano and the guitar are things that students can take well into their adult life.

Get into the BEST of your life Start the new year RIGHT! Personal training can help you reach your fitness goals and may be your next step in your fitness journey. Meet The Kroc Center's personal trainers and learn how they can help you be the best you. What is your fitness philosophy

Jalene Training since 2011 W.I.T.S. Level 3 Certified

My favorite part is being able to invest in others overall well-being and watching them change for the better. It’s so rewarding and why I love my job!

The biggest mistake I see is people not staying in proper body alignment. Our body is meant to work best in alignment and when you’re not you get excess wear and tear. It should be our goal to train for life so we don’t hurt later.

Invest in your body, train outside your comfort zone. Push your limits, and nourish yourself.

My favorite part of being a trainer is witnessing the client reach their fitness goals, and helping them overcome obstacles in the gym. The client's success is also my success.

The biggest mistake I see is posture. I see people lifting too heavy of weights either on a machine or using free weights and it disrupts their posture during the exercise. It all begins and ends with posture. Proper mechanics is always key.

Incorporate all components of exercise and train them routinely. This includes cardio, strength, balance, flexibility and core. Also for complete wellness, I recommend mind, body, and spirit.

My favorite part about being a trainer is the transformation or awakening of a client shifting into wellness.

One of the biggest mistakes about weight lifting is not doing it. It's something you need at every stage of your life and it's never too late to get started!

What is the biggest mistake you see when people weight lift?

Make good life style habits now or prepare for illness later. It’s a daily choice, choose to move, sleep well, and eat right and you’ll be amazed at how your body feels for life.

Want a trainer that can work with you on YOUR schedule?

What is the best type of cardio?

How do you stay in shape?

Visit

The Welcome Desk for more information and to sign up.

What do you love about training at The Kroc Center?

What would you tell people who want to live a healthier, more active lifestyle in the new year?

I believe the best type of cardio to do to keep in shape is any and all depending on your fitness level and restrictions. As long as you’ll do it and push yourself to get your heart rate up, that’s what matters.

I stay in shape by trying to move and not sit, get good sleep, eat right the majority of the time, and get workouts in where I can.

I love that The Kroc Center is a positive friendly place meant for all. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, when you walk into our building you’re part of our family.

Rowing. It's an upper body, lower body, low impact workout that helps increase endurance. It's easier on the body than a traditional treadmill. It's also designed for any age.

I stay in shape by working out at least 4-5 times a week. I personally like to use pyramid training. I’m also very much into nutrition and believe that it is 80% of staying healthy, the other 20% is exercise.

I love the welcoming environment and all the super friendly staff and patrons at The Kroc Center! It's like having another little family outside of your family at home.

Just start! Once you do, you will start feeling better physically, mentally, and emotionally. You will start to overcome obstacles and make gains you never thought you could. You will start exerting more energy and it will drive you to keep going and pushing yourself.

The best cardio I can recommend for getting in shape is finding something you enjoy and working your way up. Start with baby steps and steadily increase until you reach your maximum fitness potential!

I’ve been involved in exercise for 30 years now. My number one love is heavy weight lifting. I also have a balance, core and flexibility training regimen. My cardio hobbies include mountain biking, snowboarding, basketball, stair-stepper, sprinting, along with handstands, Olympic weight lifting, and whatever may interest me at the time.

I love meeting new people, the flexibility of my job, the spiritual aspect, the atmosphere, and the compassion to help other people from all of the different divisions at The Kroc and Salvation Army.

I encourage someone new to fitness or The Kroc Center to explore all paths. Try group fitness classes, try personal training, try working out with a partner, try aquatic group classes. Don’t feel ashamed or guilty, have patience, and enjoy the journey!

Start small and carve out an hour one day a week where you do something active you enjoy. Focus on one thing to improve on in your nutrition and try to get more sleep. It’s about small steps, and as that becomes more normal, then you add more. Stay consistent and you’ll see big changes as you build into a healthier YOU!

The Kroc Center offers so many great options for individuals and families; it can be overwhelming to choose what to do. Here are ten ideas to mix-up your Kroc routine! 34

Winter / Spring 2020 | KrocQuincy.org | 217-222-5762

Worship with Us

We’d love to see you Sunday mornings at Kroc Church! Everyone is welcome and we would love to fellowship with you every Sunday morning from 10:30–11:30am.

Dance the Winter Blues Away

Join us for Kroc Dance Fitness, Zumba (page 22), or West Coast Swing (page 19). The rhythm of the music and the energy in the room will help you forget all about the cold and gloomy weather outside. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and maybe a new dance move or two!

Try something new in The Kroc Café

There are so many delicious options in The Kroc Café! Try our hot soup and let us know what you think.

Catch up with a Friend

Whether you walk the track or have a cup of coffee and sit at The Kroc Café tables, grab a friend and catch up. Life can be busy, so check two things off your to-do list at once, visit The Kroc Center and visit a friend.

Attend a Family Fun Night

Every Sunday from 3–5pm, this free activity focuses on three topics each night: a part of the body, a fun exercise, and a healthy snack. Examples of past Family Fun Nights include learning about organs, dance fitness, banana Nutella roll-ups, learning about muscles, rock wall, and watermelon pizza.

Join a Sports & Rec League

Friends don’t let friends stay at home all winter! Join a sports and recreation league and enjoy a once-weekly athletic outlet. You’ll stay active during the cold winter months and have a great time with your friends. See details on page 32.

Register for Kroc Fit Kids

Held every Monday from 5–6pm. Children ages 8-18 (limited to 30 participants) will enjoy this free series which includes a fit test and focuses on healthy living, exercising, and nutrition. Examples of Fit Kids Series activities include the Healthy Heart Challenge, My Plate Project, and Are You Germ Wise?

Try a NEW Fitness Machine

Trying new equipment can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Start the new year with a change in your routine by adding a new machine to your workout. The Kroc Center’s friendly fitness and gym attendants are happy to show you how to use any piece of equipment.

Set a NEW Goal

Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try at The Kroc Center? Make a goal to try something new, such as climbing the rock wall or taking a Les Mills BodyPump class. It’s a new year and there’s nothing holding you back from setting goals and trying new things.

Complete a Body Composition Scan

Know exactly where you are starting in order to set healthy, realistic goals for your fitness journey in the new year. Anyone serious about improving his or her total health and fitness will love a Tanita full body analysis. See details on page 25.

Have your own fitness goals for the new year? Tag the Kroc Center on social media.

We love to see how our community stays #KrocStrong!

the Hungry

The charitable IRA rollover is now permanent and a great way to support the work of The Salvation Army. Karen truly shares The Salvation Army’s values. She says it’s the most important charity she supports. As a volunteer, she sees first-hand the number of seniors, individuals, and families who come to the food pantry needing help to put food on their tables. To help combat hunger, Karen applied an innovative method when making her gift. By giving through her IRA, she was able to fulfill her wish to support The Salvation Army while also reducing her taxable income. Karen says,

“If you don’t have enough to eat, you have no motivation. Hunger is disabling, both mentally and physically. It’s very challenging to get ahead in life when you must expend extra energy just to feed yourself.”

The charitable IRA rollover is now permanent and a great way to support the work of The Salvation Army. That means donors can now plan for future giving with the assurance that they can contribute each year through their IRA.

An IRA rollover gift is a way for you to support The Salvation Army today without impacting your checking or savings account balance. By law you must begin withdrawing those assets at the age of 70 ½. Gifts made from your IRA (up to $100,000 per year) are not reportable as taxable income. They also qualify for your required minimum distribution (RMD), which can lower your income and taxes.

YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM GIVING FROM YOUR IRA IF:

• You do not need all or a portion of your IRA income • You wish to make a significant gift without using cash or other assets

• You are paying too much in taxes and are looking to reduce your income

• You do not itemize deductions. Because a rollover gift

can reduce your income and taxes, you can still benefit from charitable giving even as a non-itemizer.

• You want to give over and above your normal giving. An IRA rollover gift does not count towards the 50% annual limitation on charitable gifts.

Just notify your IRA plan administrator that you want to make an IRA rollover gift to The Salvation Army and inform us of your plans for areas you’d like to support. Whether or not you choose to make a charitable IRA rollover gift, you can still designate The Salvation Army as a beneficiary to receive IRA assets after your lifetime. The lifetime charitable IRA rollover is simply another option for donors who would like to see their philanthropy at work now. As with any gift planning question, donors should consult their tax professionals for specific advice. The process of donating is relatively easy and The Salvation Army development staff is available to help. Learn more about the many benefits of making an IRA charitable rollover gift by contacting Patty or Matt.
