Welcome
Note from the Captains Welcome to the 2021 Summer edition of The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center Program Guide! As we write this, it is still only the month of March, but we know when you read this the hot days of summer will be knocking at the door. There is no better place to be working out than in our beautiful, well-maintained, air-conditioned facility. Unless of course, you enjoy the sun-warmed pavement of the Splash Pad area which opens Saturday, May 29. The Kroc Center is an all-around, family-fun place to spend an overly hot summer day. This Summer 2021 Program Guide features inspirational stories, a family-centered and entertaining summertime bucket list, and plenty of opportunities to stay in shape spiritually, mentally, and physically. We encourage you to find something new and to take advantage of all the great things YOUR Quincy Kroc Center has to offer. Throughout this publication you will notice the icon (right) next to COVID-19 program changes. Please be watching carefully for updates on safety guidelines on KrocQuincy.org as well as our Quincy Kroc Facebook page. We know God has sustained us through the past year (pandemic and all) and we know He will continue to do great things in this area through the rest of 2021!
SENIOR KROC OFFICER CAPTAIN KRISTINA & AREA COORDINATOR CAPTAIN MICHAEL SJOGREN worked with volunteers to distribute the 2020 Thanksgiving and Christmas meals outside The Kroc Center.

aging well Everyone has felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. One group in particular, older adults, have been deeply impacted. Due to the population’s at-risk nature, they have experienced loneliness, food inaccessibility, weight gain, and muscle weakness due to lack of physical activity and isolation. Now more than ever, it is important for older adults to start taking care of their physical and mental health. The Kroc Center is invested in the health and wellbeing of our community’s older adult population, which is why the Healthy Aging Series for individuals ages 62+ has been implemented.
living well The Healthy Aging Older Adult Wellness Program Sessions are a great way to safely get out of the house, meet new friends, and learn how to live a healthier lifestyle. Each session begins with prayer and devotion. Some light, modifiable exercises and stretches, that participants can safely do at home are also taught. Healthy Aging Seminars are a great way to meet people and learn about various health and wellness topics.

Shane Miller, #KrocStar since 2014, has lost 60 pounds and yet gained so much.
consistent on the journey. While most people will agree cardio is their least favorite workout, Shane has found the secret to enjoying it. He plays basketball at The Kroc Center for his cardio. Not only does playing basketball allow Shane to enjoy his cardio, but it also has helped him socialize and make friends. “I didn’t really know anybody when I first started coming to The Kroc Center. It’s nice to come here and see people, people I now call friends. That helps keep me stay motived.”
If there is anyone who could argue that they don’t have time to workout, it would be Shane Miller. Shane is a farmer, a business owner, and father of three boys ages 20, 17, and 12. Over the past 2 years, his commitment to living a healthier lifestyle by working out on a daily basis has truly paid off. Miller has lost 60 pounds, yet personally gained so much. Making changes to live a healthier life hasn’t always been easy for Shane. He started his health and wellness journey 6 years ago. He initially did well, but after awhile fell back into his bad habits of not getting enough physical activity and eating whatever he wanted. Now, he is sure to workout consistently and makes healthier nutrition choices. “Diet is very important. Watch what you eat and make sure whatever you eat is helping you and not hurting you.” Miller didn’t make all of his lifestyle changes at once, it was a slow, steady, and gradual process. One of the most difficult changes was eliminating sugar from his diet. “Yes, I have eliminated sugar from my diet. However, it has been more difficult for me to have a strict diet, during the pandemic. There was a period of time when I was not able to go to the gym, and I found it hard to motivate myself to work out at home. It was more difficult to have a healthy diet without being able to workout. For me, diet and exercise go hand in hand.” While the pandemic has caused many people to lose sight of their goals, Shane has found that getting back into the gym and refocusing on his goals has helped him to get back on track. “Be consistent, set goals, and stay after them - even if you don’t see improvement right away. It’s easy to get into the same old routine which causes you to not see a difference. I try to change it up every once in a while, – it helps make working out more fun.” Setting both short term and long-term goals has been key to Shane’s weight loss. “What I have found is that, for example, I wanted to look a certain way on my birthday when I turned 40. I didn’t make that goal, but I’m still working on it. It is something that even though I didn’t reach my goal by the original deadline, I still want to keep working towards achieving it.” A key to unlocking success lies in finding activities that are fun to do, which helps with staying motivated to continue staying
Most people will agree that cardio is their least favorite workout. Shane has found the secret to enjoying it – he plays basketball.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Keep motived and keep going even though you may not be seeing results right away. If you stay consistent, you will see results over time.”
The Kroc Center is Shane’s home away from home. “I really like this place. I’ve never switched gyms. I love coming here, playing basketball, working out, and seeing my friends every day. The staff is always very friendly. They all know me when I walk in the building. I don’t even need to use my key card to check in. Everybody is very helpful. When the gym opened back up after the lockdown, it felt great to finally be able to get back to lifting and playing basketball. It’s great to see my friends daily and socialize again.” Are you interested in making a lifestyle change, but feel overwhelmed by all of the adjustments that may need to be made? No worries! Take this advice from Shane, “Consistency is one of the biggest things. Keep motived and keep going even though you may not be seeing results right away. If you stay consistent, you will see results over time.”

A CAREER OF

Patty always wanted a job where she felt like she could make a difference, and that’s exactly what she’s done. After 35 years with The Salvation Army, she will retire on April 30. By Matt Schmidt Assistant Development Director
W
here would the Quincy Salvation Army be without Patty Douglas? As development director in Quincy since 1997, Patty has played a key role in the construction of The Kroc Center, emergency shelter, and food pantry. Not to mention all the programs and services needed to serve those in the community who rely on The Salvation Army. After 35 years with The Salvation Army, Patty will retire on April 30. It’s a career she never envisioned for herself and definitely not one she expected to hold for almost four decades. But she always wanted a job where she felt like she could make a difference, and that’s exactly what she’s done. In 1986, Patty was teaching pre-school in her hometown of Peoria, IL when a friend told her about an opening at the local Salvation Army. She applied for the job of administrative assistant and was hired three days later. But in The Salvation Army, it can be all hands on deck, and Patty soon found herself thrust into other roles within the organization. She eventually became the community relations director in Peoria where she was very active in the Flood of 1993. She set up warehouses for donations and moved mobile

food kitchens, or canteens, to where they were most needed. It was at this time where she found herself in Waterloo, Iowa coordinating a visit of former presidential candidate Ross Perot. He was touring the Midwest to help raise money for flood relief. He needed a plane and a pilot as well as a boat, and Patty made sure it was all in place as requested. She had the news media ready to cover the visit, when a call came in from Divisional Headquarters that Perot had changed his mind at the last minute and was headed to St. Louis. She had to call off everything she had worked to set up. From that day on, he became known to her as “No Show Perot”. The Flood of ’93 would not be the last of her experience with disaster relief. At times, Patty has found herself in charge of Emergency Disaster Services. She’s traveled to Louisiana for hurricane relief efforts and has been at countless fires, tornados and other tragedies, including several days at the scene of a 2004 commuter plane crash in Kirksville, Missouri. Patty recieved a call in 1997 from Major Herb Fuqua who was the commanding Salvation Army officer in Quincy. He was going to set up a development department and he

wanted Patty to come be in charge of it. So she came to Quincy not knowing a soul outside The Salvation Army. But that would soon change. “Patty and I were both new to Quincy when we first met in 1997,” said Dale Stevenson, a long-time Quincy Advisory Board member. “I remember being so impressed by her professionalism, creativity, and passion for The Salvation Army mission. She is the reason I became a volunteer and it's been an honor to have worked with her ever since!” One of the first major tasks in Patty’s new role as development director was to start a capital campaign to build a new $7 million Corps Community Center to replace the building at 5th and Broadway. But the project hit a snag and failed to get off the ground, so Patty and other members of the advisory board turned their focus to building up the Hometown Endowment fund to ensure there would always be money available for social services programs. A successful campaign, combined with an unexpected bequest of $5 million, quickly grew the fund to $10 million. Little did they know at the time how important that would be in changing the future of the Quincy Salvation Army and getting that longawaited new community center.
1986-2021
The Salvation Army soon received word that Joan Kroc had left more than $1.7 billion dollars to The Salvation Army with the idea to build community centers all over the country. She dreamed of a network of “Kroc Centers” that would provide opportunities in arts, education, and athletics for children, adults, and families in underserved areas. The Quincy Salvation Army thought, why not us? So Patty took on the task of bringing together community members to determine what the Quincy Kroc Center should offer and assisted on the complicated application. After a year-long process to narrow the hundreds of applications, Quincy became one of the 26 locations awarded a Kroc Center, mainly because they had the available funds thanks to that campaign drive and generous bequest. For a time, besides fundraiser and grant writer, Patty even took on the role of project manager for The Kroc Center, making some of the decisions in what the building would look like and what new programs it would offer. A few years later, she coordinated a capital campaign to turn the former Inman Gallery building across the street from The Kroc Center into the new home for Salvation Army Family Services and the Emergency Shelter. Patty developed numerous relationships with people in the community over the years, which helped make this campaign a quick success. It would become the only emergency shelter within a 100-mile radius of Quincy that houses men, women, and families.
Fundraising was not a career Patty had planned for, but her genuine personality, her honesty, and her ability to connect with people made her a natural at raising money for The Salvation Army. And at Christmas, nobody did it better. She never once failed to meet a goal during all her years running the Christmas campaign in Quincy. But you’ll never get her to take any credit for that. She always says it’s the community that comes together to make sure families in need have a special Christmas with food and toys. Christmas at The Salvation Army is a very special time. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of work, but the reward of being able to provide Christmas meals and toys for children of families in need, and to see the smiles on the faces of the parents, and sometimes tears of joy, is worth it all,” said Patty. Besides food and toy distribution, Patty says the highlight of every Christmas season is the WGEM Bucket Blitz. It’s been held at several locations over its 36-year history, but it’s become a holiday tradition
at the entrance to the Quincy Mall. In most years, topping $30,000 in four days is a huge success. But in her last Christmas with The Salvation Army, the 2020 Bucket Blitz raised just over $60,000. Patty loves going to auctions and buying items that she can refurbish and resell. This hobby will be a big part of her retirement, but she doesn’t plan to stray too far from The Salvation Army. After 35 years of making sure social services had the resources it needed to help those in need, Patty will return as a volunteer and help serve clients. As we say in The Salvation Army, Patty Douglas will continue “Doing the Most Good.”

The
KROC CENTER TURNS
Look for fun anniversary events this summer!
The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center opened in 2011 as a beacon of hope for the Quincy community. Ten years later, it’s fulfilling Joan Kroc’s vision to provide character and confidence building opportunities for individuals, children, and families. While the big red slide is the main attraction of the Aquatics Center, it’s The Kroc Center’s commitment to water safety that’s keeping kids in the pool. Children as young as nine months are taking swim lessons at The Kroc Center, which is the area’s only Infant Swim of America certified facility. With an eye on public wellness, in 2018 The Kroc Center initiated a program to address obesity. Adams County was named the most obese county in Illinois, so in partnership with other businesses, The Kroc Center spearheaded Adams County Taking Initiative on Obesity Now or ACTION. Hundreds of people entered the 10-week program with goals of getting active, losing weight, and eating healthier. The Kroc Center offered special membership rates for participants along with fitness and cooking classes. Besides building healthier bodies, The Kroc Center is also building healthier minds. The after school Kroc Academy offers tutoring, healthy snacks, and activities. Youth directors include STEM teaching by using robots that give children hands-on learning with computer coding. These students have access to technology they may not get at home or even school. The
Kroc Center also stepped up during the pandemic to offer remote learning for parents who didn’t want to send their children to school, but couldn’t afford to stay home from work. K.R.O.C. Kids is an award winning character building program in the division. Enrollment continues to grow. Every summer, The Kroc Center is alive with the sounds of music as The Kroc partners with the school district to offer the Joe Bonansinga Music Camp, a week-long music program for top young musicians. The Kroc Center also opens its doors when the community is most in need. It serves as a warming and cooling center; it hosted a coordinated effort to prepare countless meals during a city-wide power outage following a massive windstorm; and The Kroc served as a distribution location for meals at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Guard has used The Kroc for training and fitness testing for its troops. Additionally, each Thanksgiving and Christmas, the gym is converted into a large community room as hundreds of people come to enjoy a free holiday meal. “It’s tremendous,” said Tony Reis, a charter member. “There are other options out there, but I think overall with the church services you provide, the programs for the kids, and the workout facilities, they’re second to none.” Because of its efforts in the community, The Kroc Center was one of the recipients for the inaugural Herald-Whig Hero of Business and
Industry Award in 2019, the only nonprofit to be recognized. The Kroc Center has also been recognized as the top fitness facility multiple times by Herald-Whig readers. It’s also received two gold star ratings from THQ for The Kroc Center evaluation and standards review. Besides the tremendous economic boost provided during construction, a 2015 national study found the Quincy Kroc Center has a $13-million annual impact on its community. Like many Kroc Centers, the pandemic hit hard with a three-month shutdown followed by capacity restrictions when The Kroc reopened. But it responded with no or reduced fees for members, thorough cleaning protocols for the facility, and a goal to maintain high customer service values. Despite the shutdown, Kroc Church found a way to hold weekly services. When the congregation couldn’t meet in person, the church continued to worship on Facebook live. Captains Michael and Kristina Sjogren arrived on July 1 in the midst of the pandemic. But as Senior Kroc Officer, Capt. Kristina sees a bright future for the facility. “This pandemic is creating new ways for everyone to think about how we do life together, especially here at The Kroc Center. I am excited and thank the Lord for the new opportunities we will have to reach people in our community and to serve them in ways we have not seen before. We know The Kroc Center will continue to change lives for years to come.”
