My Experience How did you get your placement? - What helped? Finding a placement was very difficult for myself, like they say trying to get your foot into the front door is difficult at first. I was currently working at Shendish Manor Hotel, where I approached the Business Development Manager who asked me if I was interested in doing a Graphic Design role, I thought it would be a great opportunity as I had worked there for 5 years as a Team Leader and had seen a lot of marketing they had produced. After spending 6 months at the hotel producing leaflets, posters and banners. I decided that I wasn’t gaining the experience that I needed to be industry ready. In February 2016 I gained a placement at Kallkwik in Hemel Hempstead a print and design company in my local town. My knowledge of creative software is what helped me gain this placement. What was the hardest thing to overcome at first? For myself there were a lot of hard things I had to overcome. The hardest one was answering the phone, I was never confident when doing this and I would always avoid it at any cost. Since working at Kallkwik I have gained alot more confidence and now I’m always answering the phone with no hesitations at all! Another hard thing that I had to over come was the fast moving environment within the company, I had to come to terms with this very quickly and adapt to the environment. I feel as though I could walk into another company and be very prepared for this, and not having to feel as though I will get left behind. A new job its self was also the hardest thing to overcome! 1

What skills have you learnt - professionally, creatively, personally? Where do I even start! I have gained so many skills; skills I never thought I would even learn. Professionally I have learnt how to interact with the clients/customers, making sure I have fulfilled all there needs and requirements. I feel as though and can go into another company and be confident and interactive with anyone. Creatively I have learnt how I can make something boring and dull, and turn it into something eye catching and colourful. The software and printing skills I have learnt have really helped me for my future career in print and design. They have made me more aware of what actually goes into the print and design process of the products that I had to produce. I still feel I have so much more to learnt, but I continue to learn new skills everyday. Personally I feel as though I have grown into more of an adult, working in the real world really make me think about how I had to behave and act in-front of other employees and clients. Time management was a really big problem for myself, leaving projects to the last minute or not completing tasks on time as something I really struggled with. After the first month I had changed I had better control over the way I was working and how I was going about everyday within the work place. What was your favourite thing to do? Best piece of work? Thing you are most proud of? My favourite thing to do was finishing the final outcome of all my projects, seeing it all put together was really effective and priceless. To see my final pieces of work around the town centre and on social media sites really pushed me to work even harder and produce more and more better pieces of work. My best piece of work would have to be the Dacorum Borough Council posters (Page 10), as this was the first time I was left by myself to produce something 2

on such a tight time line, I am very happy and over whelmed with this piece of work as I really thought I wouldn’t be able to produce anything as eye catching as that. The most proudest thing was receiving feedback from a client, saying that I have produced something amazing and that they could never had done it without me. What advice would you give someone considering taking the placement year? My advice for someone who is considering going on a placement year is to be yourself, embrace every moment and take every opportunity you can to get involved in anything the company are offering. Expect to start your first day with nerves but expect your last day to be full of tears of happiness because you overcame everything you thought you wouldn’t. Prepare to be thrown in at the deep end, but don’t be afraid to ask for help, because that’s exactly what everyone is there for. Don’t be scared to speak your mind, companies love to see a young and fresh ideas on the table and they are always willing to listen. Take everyday as it comes, it will be a struggle at first but it is worth it when you see the end results of all your work around you, and just how much you can achieve when you put your mind to it!

Please take a look at the kind of work I produced while on a placement.

Client: Dacorum Borough Council (DBC) Date: July 2016 For this brief there were many elements I had to consider. Creating a logo that would be suitable to fit on a t-shirt and various other props for the event. Producing a large back drop banner for the customers to take photographs against, and an Instagram board for pictures that would be used on various social media websites. When creating the artwork I had to take into account the existing visual styles that had been used on previous projects and other media websites, making sure that we didn’t lose there identity and keeping within the brand guidelines.

Client: Dacorum Borough Council (DBC) Date: June, July & August 2016 While we had major projects for the council, we also had on going work, such as general posters, leaflets and booklets. The council would ask us to design and produce a leaflet for upcoming social events in the local town. These briefs were on a very tight deadline, I had to gather lots of ideas and concepts very quickly to feed back to the client. A lot of the briefs were very simple and easy, some were more complex due to the amount of artwork that needed to be created. These briefs taught me a lot about time management and how fast the industry moves.

Client: Dacorum Borough Council (DBC) Date: June, July & August 2016 My day to day roll as a designer was not always the same. Upon designing and creating concepts I would also produce the final outcome of my design. Using the booklet machine to produce high end quality booklets. The laminator to produce the shinny front and back cover to the booklet. All these skills have helped me in the future when designing different outcomes. When designing the artwork, I always had to consider the finishing of the final outcome and the position of where everything had to be, with the help of my senior designer I was able to learn a lot more about what needed to be considered for the final product.

Client: Holiday Inn Date: March 2016 One of our biggest clients is Holiday Inn. We create a lot of internal stickers, posters and boards for them. During my time on placement, I got involved in a few project that were for certain Holiday Inn’s around the country. My first project was to create a tray liner for room service trays within the hotel. The concept had to follow there brand guidelines and the colours green and white had to be included within the piece of artwork. Market research was important as they wanted the tray liner to stand out from other hotel brands in the area. The client suggested that the artwork had to be simple but eye catching for customers to look at. The restaurant menu for each Holiday Inn was always changing, during my placement I had the opportunity to design a double sided menu, which would them later be matt laminated to give the menu a smooth and professional look. The next project I was involved in was making marketing posters and a performance board. These were going to be used for the employees of Holiday Day, to encourage them to get involved in the activities within the work place.

Client: Abbots Hill School Date: February 2016 Working with schools in the local area was one of my first briefs I was given while on placement. Creating booklets, letterheads and posters to start with. After more experience I was able to take on the duty of creating banners for the outside of the school. The information was very simple and easy to apply, again keeping within the guidelines of the colour and font was very important as the final outcomes would be displayed around the school. It was important that all the images used for booklets, posters and banners actually represented what they were trying to portray across to the public. I enjoyed working on this as my first project as it was something simple but challenging at the same time, communicating with the customer and understand what they were looking for was something that came easy to myself.

Client: The Spread Eagel Hotel Date: August 2016 My background in creating work for the hotels was a lot more broad. A table talker was something I had not created before and something new I had to learn. I enjoyed this project a lot as it was good to see the end outcome produced in house. The client wanted to produce something eye catching and classy without losing the identity of the hotel. Using images from the surroundings and inside of the hotel, I was able to out together something that would stand out. The hotel wanted to promote there offers and events for the upcoming year to attract more customers into coming.

Client: RES Limited Date: June 2016 RES Limited are a wind turbine company which produce wind turbines across the country. With this brief I had to produce a poster to advertise a public information event, which was to be displayed around the town and on social media. The poster had to follow the brand guidelines and kept within the existing style of previous work that had been produced. The client wanted something simple and easy to read, so it could be used in all types of media. I enjoyed this project as it was the first time I had to produce work for this client. Understanding what kind of style and audience they were aiming for was something they were keen to get across to there customers. My next project for RES Limited was to design and make a booklet about renewable assets, this was a booklet designed for other companies and customers that wanted to gain more interest in what RES Limited do and how they could get involved. I found this project a little more difficult than the poster as I had to make sure that all the information flowed on each page. Designing the booklet had to represent previous work that my senior designer had produced in the past, keeping within the brand guidelines and making sure that all images and text were in a similar kind of format.

Client: BB’s Coffee & Muffin Date: On going work 2016 BB’s Coffee and Muffin, have 37 stores around the country, working on some of there major campaigns really gave me an insight into what really happens producing different types of POS for such a big company. I was introduced to the smaller tasks first, these tasks consist of creating product tickets, struts and table talkers. For each campaign BB’s Coffee and Muffin would come up with concepts around the different seasons of the year, for example they would use ice cream for there summer campaign and soup for there Autumn campaign. This was one of my favourite projects as it is always on going, learning how to create simple and effect artwork was challenging as they often changed there minds, which caused delays and production time on producing the final outcome which would be displayed in there stores around the country. Seeing my final work displayed in the store was really strange but an achievement all at the same time.

Client: First Port Date: February 2016 The company First Port offer a bespoke property service to high end clients looking to invest there money into the property market. My task was to create an A4 four page booklet and a A5 multi page booklet which will be given to potential clients looking for something to invest there money into. I found this task very difficult as I did not have a lot of information that was given to myself. When producing the artwork for this I had to look at previous outcomes that had been done in the past, and come up with a concept to design a high end quality booklet. This project I had the opportunity to be part of the finishing of the booklet, and bringing all the elements together. Printing, booklet making, scoring and trimming was something I had never done before and I gained a lot of experience, learning all these skills has given me more insight into producing all kinds of products.
