ubism was invented around 1907 in Paris by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It was the first abstract style of modern art. Cubist paintings ignore the traditions of perpective drawings and show you many views of a subject at one time. Cubism influenced many other styles of modern art including Expressionism, Furturism, Constructivism and De Stijl.

esign movement that envolved in the mid 60’s as a critical response to the dominane and perceived sterility of Modernism. Embracing art, architecture and design. It re established interest in ornament, sybolism and visual wit. Unconstrained by dogma, post-modern designers reject modernism’s obsession with progress and challenged the fundamental tenets of order and discipline espoused by the Bauhaus.

his brief was about creating that was realated to the streets. I decided first of all to create a mindmap to gather a few ideas and concepts in my head. Using headings such as ‘Internet’, ‘Personal Experiences’ and ‘Highstreet’ was to gain a better understanding and to look more into these subjects. I then started to look into 3D street graphics. I researched into a famous artist called Edgar Muller, he started his work by developing the concept of the view of the eye. His work seemed interesting and unquie, but with the amount of time I had I didn’t think creating something like this would be possible as there was a lot of work that had to be done. I then started to look at typography as I thought about how everywhere on the streets we see typography but fail to ever notice it. I started off by creating a college of pieces of food wrappers and typography from newspapers to see where that lead to. This was the kind of route I wanted to go down so I then researched into the history of typography to boarden by knowledge about it. Creating hand rendered type gave me an idea to use this in my final outcome of this project. Typography on the streets then lead to my next idea of creating a map. As we all know many years ago people would use maps to find there way about in a city or a town. I decided to create a map of Huddersfield town and represent how much it had grown by using pieces of string and adding more for every 10 years the town grow and became more populated.

or my artist research I explored into Armin Hofmann, his typography was usual and different. He used swiss design as part of his influences to help him carry out some of his pieces of work. Another artist I came across was Jonathan Barnbrook, he colabarated a series of type faces to make his own one. Both Hofmann and barnbrook helped me to decide what kind of typograph I was going to use. For my final outcome I created a map which I used some hand renedered typography on. Showing how the town had developed over the years I showed this with the string.

his brief was all about attempting to capture experiences or ephemeral moments of time in their work. Developing a series of collection of swallow, collaged and postcards images which could be seen as a shrine. For this breif I started off by creating a mind map of ideas, I chose subheadings such as personal items/places, pesonal experiences and artist. I started off by researching into artists such as Joseph Cornall and Brothers Quay. I then decided to go with the idea of a lost childhood, I thought of words and phrase that are linked to this. I had one of two ideas. My first idea was to create some kind of calendar, like an advent calendar. Instead of all the windows being filled with something they would have question marks in them to represent the chidhood memories that I didn’t remember or had lost out on. My second idea was a suitcase filled with all the items that brought back my memory. I decided to go with the calendar as it was something different and unusual. Using key moments such as Christmas and Birthdays.

his brief was about creating a visual and written proposals for a new verison of the ‘Golden Record’ entitled ‘Earth Artifact’. First of all I started to create a mind map which was filled with ideas and artist that I needed to research into. This then helped me create four different ideas. My first idea was to create a book with just images in it, it would be known as a childrens book. The pictures would include flag of the country, wildlife, famous landmark, people and there religion. My second idea was to create other book, but with more interaction to it. Using layers to make it more interesting to look at. Adding facts about the evolution and Earth was to be included in the book. My third idea was to create a deck of playing cards which would have useful facts about the earth on it. Linking the numbers with interesting facts would make it more unquie. My fourth idea was to create a comic book based on evolution, bing bang theory and the formation of life. I decided in the end to go with my second idea of creating a book with layers inside it. I researched into facts and myths that I could put into the book as it was young children so making it easy and fun to read was my main aim. I started researching into info-graphics which helped me understand how simple images and text could be put on a page so everyone could read and understand.

e were given this a short brief to create our own piece of typography. We had to chose three artists that would influence our typo face. I chose Hertbert Bayer, El Lissitzky and Oskar Schlemmer. To get my mind going I started dooderling to come up with some random type faces that I thought would look interesting. After this I then did my own design to each of artists that I had picked out, this then help me decide what artist I would use as my influence for my type face. I then started to put the type face onto graph paper to help me get a more even size of each of the letters.
