Theme ONE The Jobs We Do

Goal: Create a scrapbook page that provides insight into the role your job, career or occupation plays in your daily life at this point in time.

The work you do reveals a wealth of information about you. Your “job may be a traditional paid occupation or you may spend your days as a stay-at-home parent. You may volunteer your time for the good of your community or juggle multiple roles. Perhaps you have retired from professional work and entered a new stage of life. Whether you spend your days toiling at a job you hate just to make ends meet or find great satisfaction in the career of your dreams, your occupation says a lot about your priorities and values, your interests, your talents and skills, even your background. The story of your work goes even further, however, and helps paint a picture of the world where you live ... the economic climate, social norms, technological advances, and so much more.

Think for a few minutes how your work life may be different from those who came 50, 75 or 100 years before you ... or who will follow 50, 75 or 100 years from now. What kinds of things do you wish you knew about your ancestors?

What kinds of things do you think future generations will wish they knew about you? Use your answers to those questions to help guide you when deciding how to document the jobs you do at this moment in time.

/ How do you feel about your coworkers? Your boss?

/ If not you, who has your dream job? What about that person’s job appeals to you?

/ How has your job changed since you first started or pursued this field?

/ How do you anticipate life will change when you retire from working? Or do you plan to retire? Or have you already?

/ How does the reality of your current job compare to your expectations before you started?

/ How do you anticipate your job will change in the next 5, 10, 15 years? How do you feel about that?
