Every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary problem. Heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women in America, and during a heart attack, every second counts. That’s why Emanuel Medical Center launched its Cardiovascular Services program in 2010. Bringing together world-class medical talent and the most advanced lifesaving technology available, the Cardiovascular Services program saves lives in our community. As an advanced cardiac care program, Emanuel’s cardiovascular services provides a variety of lifesaving treatments and interventions, cardiac diagnostic tests, and interventional treatments and procedures.

Open heart surgery at Emanuel is performed by a team of highly-trained specialists, including some of the most talented and experienced surgeons, doctors, nurses and technicians found anywhere. The team includes: Heart SurgeonS The chief cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon heads the surgical team and runs the operating suite. The chief surgeon, assisted by the surgery team and accompanied by a second surgeon, performs the actual cutting and stitching required during various open heart procedures. PerfuSioniSt The perfusionist is responsible for operating and managing the hospital’s stateof-the-art heart and lung machine during an open heart procedure. After the chief surgeon connects the patient to the machine, the perfusionist ensures that the machine properly bypasses the heart and circulates oxygenated blood to the patient’s brain and body.

aneStHeSiologiSt The anesthesiologist monitors and manages the patient before and during surgery. The anesthesiologist also administers anesthesia to put the patient to sleep and make the procedure pain-free, administers any other medications the patient needs and inserts the breathing tube that connects the patient to a mechanical ventilator. PHySician’S aSSiStant Under the direction of the surgeon, the cardiac physician’s assistant is responsible for patients’ pre-operative care – coordinating consultations, ordering tests and performing any other functions necessary to ensure the patient is ready for surgery – and assists the heart surgeon during surgery. circulating nurSe The circulating registered nurse works at the perimeter of the operating room, helping to maintain a completely sterile environment at the operating table. They bring in equipment or supplies needed by the surgical team, enter information into records and call in orders to other departments. Scrub tecHS These specially trained cardiac surgical assistants prepare the sterile area of the operating room before surgery and assist the heart surgeon during surgery.

Other specialists and services caring for cardiac patients include: critical care nurSeS Open heart surgery patients transferred to the Critical Care Unit are cared for by a specially trained cardiovascular critical care registered nurse who administers post-operative care as directed by the surgeon. The goal in the Critical Care Unit is to have a patient breathing on their own within two to four hours following surgery, on their feet briefly about eight hours after surgery and healthy enough to leave the unit for a regular hospital floor within one to two days. reSPiratory tHeraPiStS Patients emerging from open heart surgery are still on mechanical ventilation when transferred to the Critical Care Unit. A respiratory therapist monitors the ventilator, ensuring the patient is receiving enough oxygen in their blood. When the patient is capable of breathing on their own, the respiratory therapist, under the direction of the surgeon, disconnects the ventilator and removes the patient’s breathing tube.

reHabilitation tHeraPiStS On the first day following surgery, Emanuel’s physical and occupational therapists meet with patients. The therapists then work with patients daily during their stay, focusing on exercise and mobility to help them regain strength and endurance, and educating them on how to safely complete daily activities (such as dressing and personal care) while adhering to postsurgical precautions. The therapists also provide patients with guidelines for exercises and how to progress to new activity levels once they are home. Dietitian The dietitian meets with patients to help them understand the links between diet and cardiovascular disease and learn healthier eating habits to improve their cardiovascular health. blooD bank Our on-site blood bank ensures patients have immediate access to the blood products they may need during surgery or after-care.

In addition to open heart surgery, the development of Emanuel’s Cardiovascular Services brings many new treatments and procedures to Turlock for the first time. These include: • Automatic internal defibrillator placement • Video-assisted thorascopic surgery – using small cameras to guide lung surgery • Endovascular surgeries – a technique where the surgery is performed from inside an artery or vein • Thrombolysis — dissolving and removing blood clots • Surgical treatment for cardiac arrythmia (irregular heart beat) • Minimally invasive vascular heart surgery • Thoracic, abdominal and peripheral aneurysm repair

Emanuel’s Cardiac Cath & Interventional Lab features a Toshiba Infinix Interventional Angiography System. This high-tech piece of fluoroscopy equipment generates X-ray movies and allows physicians to see inside a patient’s body and perform dozens of procedures in a safer, more comfortable and less-invasive manner than traditional surgery. From diagnostic heart catheterization and permanent pacemaker implantation to peripheral angiography, the Cardiac Cath & Interventional Lab provides Turlock-area residents access to treatments and procedures that had never been available locally before. In addition to its high-tech ability, the lab itself features soothing lighting and artwork, and a compassionate staff who create a warm and welcoming healing environment for patients. Most procedures are done on an outpatient basis, letting patients return home the same day.

In interventional radiology, or image-guided surgery as it’s also known, physicians use the scanner in the Cardiac Cath & Interventional Lab to perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures from the inside of a patient’s arteries and veins. This technique is far less invasive than traditional surgery and helps patients recover much faster.

The Cardiovascular Services program provides a variety of cardiac diagnostic tests, including transthoracic, transesophageal and stress echocardiograms, stress studies and tilt table studies.

Interventional procedures performed at Emanuel include peripheralvascular angiograms and peripheral-vascular stent placement, kyphoplasty procedures for spinal repair, port placement for dialysis access and many others.

The program utilizes a 64-slice CT scanner, the diagnostic dream machine in cardiac medicine. The scanner rotates around a patient, generating 64 high-speed images. Each revolution gives physicians crisp, still images of body parts in constant motion – like hearts and arteries – and shows contrast and detail down to one millimeter. The speed of the 64-slice CT scanner allows the technology to be an alternative to conventional angiography or cardiac catheterization. The procedure is less invasive and produces excellent imaging.
