rvhs_humanities_ What is Whitsun? Whitsun (also Whitsunday or Whit Sunday) is the name used in Britain and Ireland, and throughout the world among Catholic, Anglicans and Methodists, for the Christian festival of Pentecost. It is the seventh Sunday after Easter, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ's disciples (Acts 2).

Ingredients 12 whole strawberries, green hull on 50g milk chocolate 50g white chocolate

Who could you deliver these to as a doorstep treat?

Method: Melt the milk chocolate pieces in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Wash and thoroughly dry about 12 strawberries, leaving the green hulls on. Holding a strawberry by its hull, dip the fruit into the melted chocolate. Place the dipped strawberry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

My lovely friend made these beauties - apparently only a 10 min task ‌ I challenge you to make yours and send me a photo ‌ I will attempt this too. How hard can it be?...

tpreston@rodingvalley.net

Now melt the white chocolate pieces in the same way as the milk chocolate. Carefully pour the melted white chocolate into a small freezer bag and snip a very small hole in a corner to create the perfect piping bag. Drizzle the white chocolate in a zigzag pattern over the chocolate covered strawberries. Repeat with remaining berries, then chill to set. Serve. Cook's tip: You can use any combination of white, milk or plain chocolate if you prefer.

The famous statue of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ is in Rio. It is paying tribute to health workers during this pandemic.

Landmarks of the world often celebrate religions; either ancient or modern. They also celebrate other ideas. What is your favourite place?

A motivational thought from Ria Blundell. Well done!

Try something new! This is a cross-stitch I made when our first headteacher retired. You can get kits to make or design your own.

What Mirror Meditation Can Teach You? Do you remember the first time you saw yourself in the mirror? Reflections are powerful. We learn to who we are through the reflections of those around us. In fact, psychologists have found that we need face-to-face contact for our social and emotional development. Motivational psychologist Tara Well, PhD has created Mirror Meditation based on the neuroscience of mirroring and psychological research. Based on the three principles of mindfulness meditation: ● Attention in the present moment ● Open awareness ● Kind intention toward oneself Mirror Meditation is a mindful practice for increasing your self-awareness, managing stress and emotions, developing self-compassion, and increasing your confidence and personal presence. Miss Garip

Thought of the week! Study this image, what is it really saying? Do you agree/disagree with its implication? Why? Are schools an ideological breeding factory, or is the ‘hidden curriculum’ getting you ready for the world of work? How are schools and employment similar? Think ‘Correspondence Theory’ and ‘Meritocracy’ - Or the ‘Myth of Meritocracy’. Whatever it may be, you are at the most impressionable time of your lives. What do YOU stand for?

Let me know what you think! sgarip@rodingvalley.net

Understanding the ‘Trokosi’ system BBC Africa Eye documentary Thousands of women across West Africa have been enslaved by a centuries old practice called “trokosi”. Girls are forced to live and work with priests in religious shrines, for the rest of their lives, to “pay” for the sins of family members. Although the practice has officially been banned in Ghana, it’s still happening there and in other parts of West Africa but on a smaller scale. Twenty years after she was freed from this practice, Brigitte Sossou Perenyi goes on a journey to understand what trokosi really is and why her family gave her away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AnwkixlhxM Let me know what you think about this system and how different societies accept such traditions: sgarip@rodingvalley.net

Human Rights Watch What do you give people who have lost everything, when you have nothing? A group of refugees in Moria camp formed the Moria Corona Awareness Team (MCAT) to spread awareness and protect the camp from Covid-19. The capacity of the refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece is 3,100 however, currently holds over 20,000 people. All the people you see in this video are either fleeing from war and famine and /or poverty. They are you and I, but simply born in a different climate and circumstances. Life was not too dissimilar for those fleeing in the Irish Famine in 1879, or the Dutch famine of 1944 during World War II. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPn462L9Xds&fea ture=emb_logo

SOCIAL MEDIA

As a social scientist I am fascinated by experiments. I have not used facebook, instagram or twitter in 2020 so far. It began as a mini experiment - a month long ban on social media, but continued as I didn’t miss them. Would you? Watch these two videos and email me your opinion: adelbourgo@rodingvalley.net

History watch of the week I have decided to change things up this week and instead of a book, recommend a brilliant documentary. World War II in Colour uses original black and white footage from the Second World War that has been digitally recolourised and remastered. It gives an in depth look at the key turning points of the Second World War in a way that they have never been seen before. The series in on Youtube and Netflix so it is easy to watch at home. If you are looking for something to extend your knowledge of the most iconic conflict in world History this is a great place to start. Youtube link

Maybe we don't have it that bad? It’s a mess out there now. Hard to discern between what’s a real threat and what is just simple panic and hysteria. For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1900.

Something to consider from Mr Wershof. Chair of Governors

On your 14th birthday, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birthday. 22 million people perish in that war. Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until your 20th birthday. 50 million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million. On your 29th birthday, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, the World GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy. When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet. And don’t try to catch your breath. On your 41st birthday, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war. Smallpox was epidemic until you were in your 40’s, as it killed 300 million people during your lifetime. At 50, the Korean War starts. 5 million perish. From your birth, until you are 55 you dealt with the fear of Polio epidemics each summer. You experience friends and family contracting polio and being paralyzed and/or die. At 55 the Vietnam War begins and doesn’t end for 20 years. 4 million people perish in that conflict. During the Cold War, you lived each day with the fear of nuclear annihilation. On your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, almost ended. When you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends. Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How did they endure all of that? When you were a kid in 1985 and didn’t think your 85 year old grandparent understood how hard school was. And how mean that kid in your class was. Yet they survived through everything listed above. Perspective is an amazing art. Refined and enlightening as time goes on. Let’s try and keep things in perspective. Your parents and/or grandparents were called to endure all of the above – you are called to stay home and sit on your couch.

Wishing you all a very peaceful and safe Whitsun break The RVHS Humanities Faculty. Broadcast 7 will return after the break
