How wonderful that we are able to make more use of Epping Forest and the Roding Valley Nature Reserve, although there is more rubbish being left. Our Mr Murray spends quite a lot of time litter picking to ensure that our green space stays healthy and clean, we can all help too by continuing to remind everyone to take their litter home.

Massive well done to Alice Anderson for her amazing history work ‌(this is just a few of the pages she completed) reminded every day how lucky we are to work with such wonderful young people, all of whom we’re missing very much!

John Agard was born in Georgetown, British Guiana. He moved to England with his partner in 1977. He worked for the BBC and the Commonwealth. He is famous as a poet.

His work has won many awards and is studied in English.

BLACK TUDORS tells the stories of ten Africans. Miranda Kaufmann traces their tumultuous paths in the Tudor and Stuart eras, uncovering a rich array of detail about their daily lives and how they were treated. She reveals how John Blanke came to be the royal trumpeter to Henry VII and Henry VIII: the trouble Jacques Francis got himself into while working as a salvage diver on the wreck of the Mary Rose; what prompted Diego to sail the world with Drake, and she pieces together the stories of a porter, a prince, a sailor, a prostitute and a silk weaver.

They came to England from Africa, from Europe and from the Spanish Caribbean. They came with privateers, pirates, merchants, aristocrats, even kings and queens, and were accepted into Tudor society. They were baptised, married and buried by the Church of England and paid wages like other Tudors.

Yet their experience was extraordinary because, unlike the majority of Africans across the rest of the Atlantic world, in England they were free.

They lived in a world where skin colour was less important than religion, class or talent: before the English became heavily involved in the slave trade, and before they founded their first surviving colony in the Americas.

Their stories challenge the traditional narrative that racial slavery was inevitable and that it was imported to colonial Virginia from Tudor England. They force us to re-examine the 17th century to find out what had caused perceptions to change so radically.

Introducing Black Tudors means a reassessment of our national story and what it means to be British today. They are just one piece in the diverse jigsaw of migrations that make up our island’s multicultural heritage. The knowledge that Africans lived free in one of the most formative periods of our national history can move us beyond the invidious legacies of the slavery and racism that blighted later periods in our history. BLACK TUDORS challenges the accepted narrative that racial slavery was all but inevitable and forces us to re-evaluate our shared history.

If climate change is melting the poles, imagine the effect it has on areas that are already hot and dry.

A look at the biggest social issues facing the UK since... 2017!

Hate - Cybercrime, hate crime and bullying all featured heavily in the media during the latter part of 2016. Increases in violent crime and hate crime were reported in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote. With the internet as the next crime frontier, the government announced £1.9bn of spending on cyber-defences, and more recently announced that it will fund research into social media hate crime in the wake of Brexit, with companies including Google, Facebook and Twitter also coming under pressure to remove hate speech.

Growing out of this ‘people power’ is on the rise, showing that among the perceived doom and gloom there is an appetite for shared action and purpose.

Mental health - Media coverage of mental health stories included children’s mental health, workplace discrimination, depression during pregnancy and high suicide rates in young men. This showed a real shift to end the stigma around talking about mental health, and with the Royals entering the space too we can expect this issue to remain firmly on the agenda.

Climate change - Pollution and pollution-related deaths gained traction with UK media, with coverage criticising political figures for not doing enough and even accusing the government of burying its own report. On the positive side, small-scale innovations going on around the country were also reported.

Expect to see brands across all sectors appealing to the sustainability-conscious; Yorkshire Tea recently committed to planting 1M trees over 5 years and housing association London & Quadrant’s (cl) eco-development The Quarry will incorporate solar energy, living roof terraces and cycle routes.

Obesity - Many stories on obesity during 2016 were childhood focused, with strong links to wider issues of escalating diabetes rates and the dangers of sugar. Large retailers started to reformulate their soft drinks in anticipation of the ‘sugar tax’ (implementation due April 2018), so expect some ‘healthy competition’ from brands in this space. There’s likely to be further pressure in the fight to cut adult obesity; governments around the world are expected to report a 0% increase in obesity by 2025 to hit the World Health Organization (WHO) target of reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 25% by 2025.
