The laws were very similar to those today, with minor changes such as the height of the net being made later on. The first Wimbledon Final had around 200 attendees paying a shilling to watch it.
Who have been the most successful Wimbledon players? Roger Federer has won the most Male Singles Titles with 8; he won these in 2003-07, 09, 12 and 17. Martina Navratilova has won the Woman Singles Titles the most times with 9; she won these in 197879, 82-87 and 90. Modern-Day Wimbledon: 608 players are going to be competing in the main competitions at Wimbledon, with over 525,000 spectators attending. First Female Newsreader On the 20th of June 1960 Nan Winton (Nancy Wigginton) was the first female newsreader on the BBC television channel. She was appointed to read evening and weekend bulletins as an ‘experiment’, to see viewers responses and to see if it would work. (Over 60 years ago this women changed the game). She had previously worked on news programmes Panorama, Town and Around before she joined the BBC team. In addition she was an experienced journalist at the time, so she was no fool! She was said to be serious and strong enough to overcome all the criticism from the media, that said women could not present such grave news. Sadly the ‘experiment’ only lasted until October because according to BBC Audience Research, viewers thought that a woman presenting late news was ‘not acceptable’. Despite this she had read the late bulletins seven times before it ended and signified a major step forward for women in the news business. She proved that it was possible and inspired many to pursue their goals in news. Personally I think she’s so admirable because she refused to back down to the media and didn’t listen to their nonsense about what a woman can and can’t do, she just carried on and did it.
This amazing woman unfortunately passed away on the 11th May 2019 but she left an extraordinary example behind.

Nottinghill carnival first started in 1966 and it was hosted in order to celebrate the Caribbean culture and traditions in London, inspired by the Trinidad Carnival. The first Nottinghill carnival, however, only 500 people attended. This is a great contrast to it becoming the largest street festival in Europe. Nottinghill carnival on average has 50,000 performers, over 30 sound systems and approximately 1 million people across the carnival weekend.
Nottinghill carnival is spread across three days: Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Monday is the main day of carnival, Sunday is the children’s day and more chilled as well as family friendly meanwhile Saturday is the opening day of the
I went to carnival last year and it was a fun, vibrant and exotic atmosphere. Here are some tips to going to carnival: Wear bright clothing to stand out and match the vibe Do not wear your best shoes or sandals or sliders, wear decent trainers that you don’t mind being stepped on or slightly dirty
Go with some money Carry water and use a small bag like a waist bag or crossbody bag Try follow a float with the music you like Have fun and enjoy yourself, it only happens once a year!

Featured Interview We interviewed Rhys Dolan, who recently participated in an international triathlon competition in Spain and has been doing triathlons his whole life. We asked him some questions about the sport below. Q: What age did you first compete in sport? A: The age that I started doing sport was about 7 when I played football for about 4-5 years and then changed over to swimming. The swim club was connected to my triathlon club and that’s how I got into it. I’m more of a practical person than an academic one and triathlon wasn’t boring with three different sports.
Q: What do you like about triathlon compared to other sports? A: The thing that I like about triathlon compared to other sports is that there is 3 sports within it which makes it less boring and more competitive and challenging.
Q: What event did you take part in recently? A: The event I took part in was a GBR age group triathlon in Spain that I qualified through doing national competitions and trying to be In the top 3 of my age group in those national/ local races. It was my very first international event which made it a lot more unknown.
Q: What were the main challenges going into the race? A: The main challenges for me was not knowing what the race format would be like and also carrying a possible injury and trying to overcome that. Also the fact that I was the youngest age in the whole field of competitors. Q: What training did you do to prepare you for the competition? A: The kind of training involved is very hard and challenging on its own. I train
basically everyday as well as going gym 3-4 times a week straight after school. There is always a mix of intensity to give myself rest days but it can be very tiring. Q: Who are your sporting heroes and why? A:My sporting heroes are the Brownlee Brothers as they had achieved so much in the triathlon world and have done so much for the sport as well. Q: What is your ultimate goal in Triathlon? A: My ultimate goal in triathlon is to either reach professional standard and compete for GBR or to be racing all over the world to make me feel like all my training was worth it. Q: How would you encourage people to participate in Triathlon’s? A: I would encourage more people by just advertising and going out of my way to get the sport known and to accomplish many achievements to inspire the younger generation to take up triathlon and to give an insight into what it’s like to be a triathlete. Q: Who helps encourage and contributes to your success in the sport? A: A main contributor is my parents by taking me to training, events and supplying me with much of my gear. Also my sponsors FFWD, Zone3 and precision hydration and my running specialist for the exposure and gear to help my building in the sport and injury prevention. Finally just me believing in myself to achieve the best.
Q: How have you balanced school with sport? A: I have mainly balanced my studies, sport and social life by prioritising my studies first as I have just completed GCSE and trying to keep to my training plan as they take place later on in the day. Also in my spare time going out with my mates.
