Parent bulletin 3 7 15

It has been yet another busy week at Roding Valley High School. Last Thursday we held the Year 6 into 7 Transition Evening and I was delighted to see the turn out from Parents and Students. It was a packed house in the Hall with standing room only at the back. It was an opportunity for us to speak to the parents and students about the expectations that we have for next year and to highlight the efforts that we make to ensure that the new Year 7s settle into school seamlessly. June Cordwell, Assistant Headteacher, and Mr McManners, Head of Year 7 next year, have worked hard to visit the Primary Schools and speak to the Year 6 teachers in order to find out as much as possible about the students who will be joining us in September. This year we have added to our Induction programme as we have held two Testing Days when the Year 6s come into school and sit a number of papers. This has provided us with the information that we need to ensure that teachers can differentiate their lessons in accordance to the needs of the students. We still ran the Transition Day as in previous years when the students get to meet their form tutors and experience a range of lessons. This was a very positive day and the feedback that we have had from the students is that they are really looking forward to starting Secondary School and making the most of their time at Roding Valley High School. This week has also seen the inaugural Sixth Form Induction Programme where prospective Year 12s spent three days experiencing what life will be like in the Sixth Form. It was great to see how smart the students looked in their suits and business dress and I was delighted to see so many of our current Year 11s, as well as a number of external candidates, enjoying the sessions. Ms Darabasz has worked incredibly hard to put the programme together and was supported during the Induction by Mr Harris, our new Head of Sixth Form. It was great to pop into the Taster lessons across the range of subjects and see the enthusiasm of staff and students. I am certain that our Sixth Form is going to be a fantastic place to study and we will ensure that every student is supported to achieve the very best that they can achieve in every subject. You will have noticed that due to the hot weather we took the decision that students were not required to wear their blazers. We also decided that boys need not wear ties and could have their top buttons undone for the second part of the week. Next week it is forecast to be somewhat cooler so it will be back to normal as far as uniform is concerned although we will keep an eye of the temperatures. Clearly, if conditions become an issue we will inform the students of uniform expectations accordingly.
