RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect

Endeavour

Week ending: Friday 22nd September 2017 “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela

Message from the Head of School. It has been a really positive start to the year and this week has been very busy in school. The students are now settled and working really hard, their uniform and conduct has been excellent. Our school has been open this week for tours by prospective parents and their children. Our students were excellent, a real credit to the entire school community. I was very proud to lead these tours and let our visitors see our school in action on a normal day. The feedback has been incredibly positive and I look forward to the Open Evening on Thursday 28th September from 5:30pm to 8pm. Please can I remind parents that we close at 12:20pm for students on that day and we expect them back on site for 11am on Friday 29th September. They will go straight to their tutor groups ready to start lessons period 3. They will not have access to food until lunchtime so please ensure they have had a hearty breakfast beforehand. I do hope that many will be acting as tour guides on the night or supporting in faculty areas. Please do encourage them to help on the night but please do sign the consent form and make arrangements to collect them at the end of the evening. I would like to announce that Paul Wershof has stepped down as Chair of Governors after 10 years of outstanding service and commitment to the school. He will remain on the governing body as the vice chair. I trust that you will all join me in thanking him for all that he has done to serve the school community; he has worked tirelessly to support the students and has always been incredibly supportive of the school. He will be succeeded by Tony Barritt (previously the vice chair), a very experienced governor. Tony has written a letter which I have attached to this bulletin, introducing himself and providing an update from the governors. Last night we had both Year 8 and Year 12 Information Evenings. At these events Information was shared with parents/ carers on ways in which they could help their son/daughter to maximise their achievement and progress this academic year. We also showed parents our revised school reports which we will be using this year in Years 7-9. We hope that parents will find the revised version more user friendly and enable parents to track their child's progress against the new 9-1 GCSEs. We will discuss at the Parents forum on the 16th October and your feedback is appreciated. The supporting literature has been emailed out today to the parents of both Year groups and can also be found on the school website www.rodingvalley.net with the Year 10s.

Please note that the Year 9 Information Evening is on 5th October at 6pm. There have been lots of other exciting events in school; these include a STEM event for Year 9 and a challenge event for year 7. Further details of these can found later in the bulletin. The extracurricular timetable can also be found attached to this bulletin. This week parents of Year 7 were invited to join Show My Homework and please note a letter regarding regarding Show my Homework with some helpful guidance is now on the website. Please contact jhodges@rodingvalley.net with any issues. The new 3G pitch will be open next week so please can I remind you that students will only be allowed onto the pitch if they are wearing the correct mounded footwear. The Year 7s and 8s will be spending their lunchtimes on the sports side so they need to bring in the correct footwear for lunchtimes if they want to play on the pitch. Year 9s will be able to play on the pitch at lunchtime but only if they have the correct footwear. The main building work continues and it does mean that we have lost access to one entrance in Brook Road. For the safety of our students please can I remind parents that they must not park on the zigzag lines on the road, especially given the reduced exits available to the students whilst the building work continues. Enjoy your weekend Ms. S Jenner Head of School

Year 8

The Year 8's experienced an assembly on Wednesday 20th September (period 5) around Fire Safety.

It was an eye opening production with many opportunities for students to openly discuss, contribute and share their knowledge around the topic. The main purpose of the assembly was to reinforce the dangers and potential risks students may encounter if they are deemed unsafe around fires. It was also highlighted how to prevent Fire's from occurring and what actions to take. It was a very useful, beneficial production for our students who were engaged throughout the entire assembly which was delivered by the Essex Fire and Police Safety Department.

Year 8 Parents Information Evening On Thursday evening parents of Year 8 attended Roding Valley High School to be informed of some important changes. The evening was structured around the changes to the grading system, student assessments, Show My Homework, MyEd, our registration programme and PiXL Edge. Parents were also introduced to our new Deputy Headteacher Mr Cheema, who informed parents of his role here at Roding Valley High School, leading behaviour and safety. Overall it was really beneficial for those parents who attended the evening as the feedback was extremely positive, and I thank you for your continued support. The information from the evening will be sent to parents via e-mail and will be shared on our schools website for your perusal. As Progress Leader of Year 8 I am delighted with the start the year group has made and excited to observe the progress taking place from the students across all subject areas.

Year 10 Class of the Week

Thoughts Of The Week. I have been really impressed with the year group so far and they have really hit the ground running. The pupils clearly understand that they have a very important few years coming up and this is evident through their work ethic and commitment. The pupils have made me feel very welcome and I look forward to working alongside them and the other staff at RVHS to ensure our pupils make maximum progress whilst enjoying all that school has to offer.

Year 10 Leader board

10B/Gg1 (Hayley Barrons class) “It was so lovely to have a class that straight away gave out their text books without my asking, automatically looked to the board for their lesson plans without prompting and got on with the work that was set. The end of the lesson was also packed away with the minimum of fuss.

(Based on Progress points and Attendance)

An absolute pleasure to cover.

Sports News Success for Louise Gilbert Louise (who left in the summer) competed at the weekend in the South of England Athletics Championships representing Essex. She won the 1500m and the 4x400m. Essex won the day overall. This is a massive achievement and is testament to her hard work and dedication.

Congratulations Louise! Ms. S Parry

Year 7 Football An Excellent Start by the RVHS Boys. There was some quality attacking football complemented by some cultured defending. Although there will be harder matches, it will be hard not to expect this team of polite young men to be challenging for trophies come the end of the season.

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.

We do ask that you can commit to working 8-10 hours (per week if required) during exam periods. There will be appropriate training for successful candidates.
