RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 22nd March 2019 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School

With Easter fast approaching, there is a final push towards the public exams. Please can I remind both Year 11 and Year 13 parents that we are holding an Exam Support Session on Monday 25th March at 6pm, in the main hall. It will be based on practical strategies that can be used to support students before the public examinations. For those parents who attended our Parent forum, we will revisit and extend some specific ideas. There will be a full revision programme offered by the school in the first week of the Easter break. Personal Learning Checklists (PLCs) breakdown the content that your son/ daughter is studying in their individual themes/ topics/ units/ modules. As a school we have encouraged their widespread use across the school and subject areas. They support assessment and revision. Our initial focus had been in the exam year groups but we are now increasing their use across all year groups, as we recognise how supportive these are to our students. The link to the GCSE and A Level PLCs can be found on the school website. https://www.rodingvalley.net/teaching-learning/revision-resources/ Nobody could argue that reading is not important and that a person can be limited in what they can accomplish without good reading and comprehension skills. Reading develops the mind, builds vocabulary and supports understanding. The reformed curriculum is very contextual and reading for understanding is a vital skill that we need to develop in young people. We are now in the third year of our DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) initiative. This is where every Year 7, 8 and 9 spends 20 minutes a day reading at a set time. This has been successful and has shown an increase in reading progression and the enjoyment of reading. It is expected that every student should have a reading book with them, when they don’t and are just given a book, it does not really support the activity or the level of engagement. Please do ensure that your child has a reading book; please do check the suggested reading lists on the school website. https://www.rodingvalley.net/teaching-learning/reading-lists/

Please can you also take the opportunity to check that your son / daughter has all the correct equipment including a scientific calculator. Can I remind parents that the girl’s skirts should sit below the knee and at this time of the year, many have grown and may need replacing over the Easter Holiday. We have now agreed our term dates for 2020-21, details of these can be found below and are available on the school website.https://www.rodingvalley.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2020-21-RVHS-TermDates.pdf Each week we promote a short term calendar, if you would like to see our full year, please click on the link to our website; https://www.rodingvalley.net/parents/calendar/ Links to the key information, including extra-curricular clubs and policies can be found further on in the bulletin. Thank you for the continued support of the Swimathon. Have a good weekend Sharon Jenner Headteacher

Message from Mr Dobson This week during character and culture the Year 7s have been looking at the very serious topic of exploitation and how it has manifested itself in the modern world. Mr Cheema presented an excellent assembly which highlighted the issue and what to look out for. The clear message of the weekly theme was to reiterate our primary motive which is to keep our students safe. The key to this is for our students to make sure they tell a parent/carer or adult at school about any issues or concerns they have. Once we all know then something can be done to resolve the situation.

Message from Miss Williams We are now four weeks into the new term and the majority of year 8 students are continuing to represent the year group positively at all times. I have however become increasingly concerned by the number of students who are failing to turn up to lessons on time with all their equipment and are not therefore ready to learn. This is a basic expectation for all of our students. As a result, as of next week; I will be closely looking at the behaviour points of all students and sending letters home if your child is not following our school expectations. This will hopefully keep you more informed about the areas, which will be affecting your child’s progress so that meaningful conversations can take place to support the sanctions and interventions taking place in school.

Healthy living and nutrition week is taking place in March so I would like to encourage students to think about what they can do to stay healthy and improve their nutrition. The challenge is to complete and submit any of the following tasks:

 Create a healthy lifestyles poster  Cook a healthy meal, take a photograph and write a paragraph about what it contains  Create your own breakfast/lunch menu  Write about your own exercise routine  Create a 4-week exercise plan and complete it. Students judged in First, second and third place will win Points for their Houses. Good luck!

Year 8 Handball On Tuesday, me and 8 other Year 8 girls went to Bower Park School in Romford, for the Essex handball competition. We all had very little knowledge about handball but we’re all raring to go and eager to play. We played an overall of 6 games against 6 different schools in the area. We all played very well and won all of our games except for 1, against the national handball champions (Bower Park School.) Overall we came 2nd and were all very happy! We had a fantastic day and enjoyed every minute. Written by Bronya Overington Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

I would like to nominate my Year 8 Religious Studies class (8a/RS4). Their commitment and hard work is outstanding. They are truly fantastic! Nominated by Miss Williams

Message from Mr Ryan It has been another busy week for year 9 and it is a pleasure to have conversations with students who are excited or curious about 40/40, our series of lectures aimed at broadening our students knowledge of wider issues.

Our first lecture was held by Miss Wybrant, who spoke about Myasthenia, an illness that she has personal experience of. Students were moved by the lecture and I had many interesting conversations following it. I look forward to seeing the reactions to the rest of our speakers.

On Wednesday 20th March, RVHS was visited by the highly regarded theatre company ‘Splendid Productions’. The company of three actors performed a startling and innovative version of the ancient Greek trilogy of plays ‘The Oresteia’, adapted by Splendid’s artistic director, Kerry Frampton. The play was performed to our Year 10 and 11 GCSE drama students, as well as the Year 9s who have just opted for the GCSE course.

The show reduced a nine-hour drama about justice, revenge, matricide, patricide and the rule of law to one hour and ten minutes! There were emotional moments, bloody murder and songs, which steered us through the complex story of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra and Orestes’ troubled family life. After the show, the students took part in a lengthy and informative Q&A session with the cast, which covered matters including the style of the show, how they adapted the work to make it about modern issues like feminism and me-too and how the actors had joined the industry.

The GCSE students will be writing about the show in their upcoming exams, and we were all delighted to have experienced such a terrific and energetic performance, giving us plenty of ideas for our future drama work. Well done to Year 12 Geography for braving 60mph winds, dorm rooms, Ms Barron’s driving and limited Wi-Fi last weekend. They are now experienced in geographical investigation, ready to complete their own coursework. The trip included a close encounter with wild seals, a walk round the idyllic town of Cromer, a trek along sand dunes and assessment of the impacts of coastal erosion surrounding North Norfolk.

Child Exploitation How can I support my child? Parents/carers can discuss the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships with their children, this is really important in helping highlight potential risks to them. There are also practical steps you can take, such as:

 Don’t wait to be 100% sure, collect evidence, if you suspect that your child is at risk – act now and call Child Line or Essex Police  Stay alert to changes in behaviour or any physical signs of abuse, e.g. bruising  Be aware of new, unexplained gifts or possessions, e.g. mobile phones, and carefully monitor any instances of staying out late or not returning home  Exercise caution around older friends your child may have, or relationships with other young people where there appears to be a power imbalance  Make sure you understand the risks associated with your child being online and put measures in place to minimise them. This parent leaflet is a useful guide to help you talk to your child about CSE. Online Safety Sometimes grooming and sexual exploitation takes place online. Make sure you know how to keep your children safe. If you are worried about something that has happened online, help is available:

 Has someone acted inappropriately towards your child online? Report it to CEOP.  If your child shares something online that they wish they hadn’t, they shouldn’t feel guilty. ChildLine can help you and your child get the image removed.  NSPCC has advice and tools to help keep your child safe whenever and wherever they go, including Parents' perceptions of sexting What to do if your child goes missing If your child does not return home when you expect them to and you are worried, in the first instance you should try and find out where they are. Contact relatives or friends to see if they have seen them or know where they are. You should also search your property and local area to see if you can locate them. You should also:

 Try to contact them directly via mobile phone, text or social networking sites (such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat)  Check their bedroom and any other place where your child might be within the house or building  Check the garden, garage, sheds, grounds and surrounding area  Check with their friends, school, neighbours, relatives, work or anyone else who may have any suggestions about where they might be. Ask them to tell you immediately if they hear from the missing person However, if your child is missing or has run away from home, you must contact the police. Dial 999 in an emergency situation or call your local police force immediately on 101 If you cannot locate your child following a telephone and physical search then you should report them missing to the police by dialling 101. You do not have to wait 24 hours before reporting them missing. Find out more about Missing Children and what to do, please use the following links:

Introducing The Team So Far:We have entered two teams of five to swim a total of 10kms. We have representing the teachers: Mohamed Ibrahim, Physics Teacher and Chris Dobson, Year 7 Progress Leader and Geography Teacher. Steve Abbott: parent to Thomas and George, and Natasha Dean Conway: parent to Joshua for the parents. Our students so far are Emily Fairhead, Jemima Purser and Ema Zilute Year 7, Joshua Conway and Nathan Wakinshaw, Year 8 and our Governor is Sharon Famiglietti.

Why Did You Want To Join the School’s Swimathon Challenge? “As a RVHS teacher I am really looking forward to being part of the Roding Valley team participating in an event that will raise money to help find a cure for cancer - a disease that has affected my life on far too many occasions.” C Dobson, Year 7 Progress leader and Geography Teacher “I'm so pleased to be able to support these charities as my family has been affected recently. I love swimming so will look forward to the challenge.” Emily Fairhead, Year 7 student “As a Governor and parent I wanted to organise a charity event that included the whole school community as I believe that schools need to be more than just education. On a personal note, I have lost several people to cancer, my cousin to Hodgkin Lymphoma at 16, several good friends including a mum of children in the school and my dad has suffered life-changing disfigurement to the disease so I would love to raise as much as we can for these charities. On a lighter note my swim strategy will be to hang onto the feet of one of our team who has the unfair advantage of in built flippers!” S Famiglietti, Governor and Parent Support our challenge and see how much we have raised so far at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rodingvalleyhighschool
