RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 29th March 2019 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School Thank you to all of our Year 11 and 13 parents and carers who attended our Exam Support Evening on Monday 25th March, I really hope we were able to provide you with some useful resources and tips for you to use to support your child in their upcoming external exams. If you would like to view the information we provided at this event, please visit our website: https://www.rodingvalley.net/parents/how-you-can-help-your-child/ Please note that over the Easter Break, we will be running a programme of support for our GCSE and A level students. Can I ask you to encourage your child to attend these support sessions as the information and guidance provided by our teachers will prove to be invaluable to them when preparing for their upcoming exams and their ultimate success. Details of our timetabled Easter Revision Sessions are included further on in this bulletin. I am always so grateful for our committed staff; who are always prepared to come and support the students at this crucial time. Congratulations to our students who took part in the ‘Up for Debate Regional Competition’ this week. What an amazing accomplishment, to come first place against 150 other schools. I am so proud of the dedication and hard work our Year 8 students; Ruby Coyte, Joseph James and Zak Smith have displayed. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them luck for the National Championships this coming summer!

Thank you to all of the students, staff, parents and Governors who took part in the ‘Swimathon’ this weekend. At the latest count they had raised a whopping £895 for Cancer Research and Marie Curie. If you would still like to donate to their cause, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rodingvalleyhighschool The Year 10 students attended the Speak out Challenge Workshop last Friday, this is the first stage in a National Competition and was organised by Mr Ehsan. My thanks to him for preparing the students for this competition. The students were fantastic and I look forward to seeing them present in assemblies. This year, we have been given the honour of hosting the Regional competition on Wednesday 24th April.

Please ensure that you use the forthcoming Easter holiday to replace any uniform, equipment or shoes as appropriate. We have included our uniform expectations further on in this bulletin. Please note that black trainers are not acceptable unless worn for specific, evidenced medical purposes. All jumpers must be school issue and skirts must be worn below the knee. Where medical evidence is provided then the student is issued with a mauve card which they can then show if challenged. The students’ appearance in our community is very important to the good standing of the school and our uniform is now of a very high standard which I intend to maintain. I thank you for your support in advance, our consistent expectations benefit everyone. If anyone is suffering financial hardship then please do contact Miss Dyer to discuss, we will always do our best to support where we can. On Monday 25th March, our Year 11 and 13 students had their leavers photographs taken by Carmel Jane Photography. Your child will have brought home an A5 Flyer containing a QR code for their individual photograph gallery. Please can we ask parents to log in using the information on the flyer. If you have lost your code, please contact the school office or if you need assistance with ordering please contact the Carmel Jane Team on 01277 822674. Carmel Jane photography is offering free postage on all orders placed before Sunday 7th April. Please can I remind you that school will finish at normal time on Friday 5th April for the Easter term break and will reopen to all students for the start of the summer term on Tuesday 23rd April at 8:35am. Best wishes Mrs S Jenner Headteacher

Year 11 – 13 Exam Support Evening Ahead of the Year 11 and 13 external examinations, we hosted an evening of revision support for parents on Monday 25 March. Following an introductory welcome from Mr. Price, the evening included tips for organisation, memory and revision strategies from Ms Larkin and Mr Banks. Important points to note from the evening are that students need two types of revision timetables: one for the school day and one for time outside of school. These timetables need to be realistic and manageable, working to a 3:1:1 ratio of work, rest, and fun! To conclude the evening, Head of School Mrs Jenner, explained how to use school reports and students’ results to prioritise and plan revision, and Ms Wheaton looked ahead to students’ next steps to Sixth Form. If you missed the evening, you can look at our revision tips on the school website: https://www.rodingvalley.net/parents/how-you-can-help-yourchild/ Alternatively, please email Ms Larkin plarkin@rodingvalley.net to request access to some fantastic resources that can be used to support your child through their upcoming exams.

For Debate Competition. Congratulations to the RVHS Debate Team, who have won the regional finals of the ‘Up for Debate’ competition, our students came first out of 150 competitors! RVHS won all three debates, which were:

 This House would allow performance enhancing drugs in professional sport. (Proposition)  This House would ban smart phones for under 16 year olds. (Proposition)  This House would reintroduce national military service in the UK (Opposition and final motion) This is no small feat and we came very close last year so the victory is even sweeter! Well done to Ruby Coyte, Joseph James and Zak Smith on this amazing achievement as well as all three for placing in the top ten of the competition, we would like to also congratulate Emily Bagshaw, who received a special mention from the judges. Two years in the making! We will be taking part in the national championships in the summer, so stay tuned! Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

West Essex District Swimming Gala On Wednesday 27th March, we took the largest ever RVHS swimming squad to the West Essex District Gala at Davenant Foundation School. After an excellent performance from all the swimmers, we finished in 3rd place behind Davenant and West Hatch who drew to take the honours on the day. There were some excellent individual performances on the day, including first places to Megan Passmore, Jack Carr, Kirsty Flowers, Tom Medhurst and Ed Johnstone in their individual events. Our U16 girls Medley & Freestyle relay teams consisting of Bella Carr, Mia Ali, Kirsty Flowers and Tolani Aradeon also won both their relay events, with Tolani swimming up an age group. Well done to all the swimmers, you showed excellent enthusiasm and were a true reflection of the great RVHS spirit.

Congratulations to our Swimathon Team, who could not wait to get off the starting blocks on Saturday to raise money for Cancer Research and Marie Curie. Mother and son team members, Natasha and Joshua Conway took part because they are fortunate enough to have had relatives beat cancer and they would like the research to continue to ensure more people can be part of that number. Thank you to everyone that supported us on Saturday and to all who have donated– with gift aid our total stands at £895 so far. If you not already done so please continue to help us raise even more money for Cancer Research and Marie Curie by donating now on:

On Friday 29 March, 30 of our students took part in a full day workshop as part of Jack Petchey’s ‘Speak Out Challenge’; a programme aimed at building public speaking skills and confidence in young people. The event, hosted by a representative of the Speakers Trust, saw students deliver a speech on a topic of their choice to the group; utilising body language and projection to deliver confident speeches. From the 30 students that took part, five have been selected to perform at the Year 9 assembly on Wednesday 3 April, following which, two students will be voted to go forth and represent the school in the inter-school Regional Finals, taking place on 24 April and will be hosted by Roding Valley High School.

MiChoice Workshop On Tuesday 26th March, our Year 7, 8 and 9 students participated in the MiChoice Workshops. MiChoice is an interactive workshop exploring personal wellbeing and relationships, commissioned by the Epping Forest Health and Wellbeing Board (funded by Public Health England) with all content being reviewed and signed off by the Essex Sexual Health Service. The workshop was delivered by a member of the Red Balloon Foundation Team and a team of actors who bought three scenarios to life for the students. This was so they had a safe space to explore age appropriate themes relating to the way they are likely to experience, or hear other students describing, romantic relationships and the issues surrounding them. The three scenarios covered the areas of: 1. Consent: re-enforcing the message that our body is our own, that nobody has the right to have any physical contact with us (even if they are our boyfriend/girlfriend) without our say so and that consent can be withdrawn at any time we feel uncomfortable. 2. Online Behaviour: exploring the effects that sending and sharing inappropriate images or videos can have on our future. 3. Respect: thinking about how our words can have a powerful effect on the people who are on the receiving end of comments that are made, especially when these relate to a person's appearance; no person is an object and should never be treated as such. Our students were impeccably behaved and showed maturity throughout the workshop.

Year 11 Geography Trip to Mersea Island This week, our Year 11 Geography Trip to Mersea Island. Luckily, the sun was out and ours students enjoyed spending their day learning about the environment to support their GCSE studies

Message from Mr Dobson As we come to the end of the Spring Term, with the clocks changing to British Summer time, we can look forward to brighter weather and lighter evenings. The Swimathon was on Saturday and Mr Ibrahim and I participated in this very worthwhile event to help raise money for Cancer research. Please follow the link on the section of this publication to donate. This week we have been looking at Leadership and how that will manifest itself within the school community. After Easter we will be looking for applications from Year 7 students for roles within the Student Leadership structure. Miss Larkin's assembly set out the very exciting opportunities on offer including House Captains and Teaching & Learning Ambassadors.

Year 7 Sports Leaders Thank you to our Year 7 Sports Leaders, who on 22nd March helped run 'Fun Games' activities for Reception and Year 1 pupils at Whitebridge Primary School with Mr Allen.

“Congratulations to Vicky and Evie (Year 7) who have been nominated for Drama stars of the week, for their true dedication to the craft. Both students have been in every lunchtime to practice their drama challenge documentary about Greek Theatre!

Message from Miss Williams Mrs Jenner delivered an assembly on Thursday all about leadership and why leadership qualities are so important. Our students had a chance to reflect upon the skills and attributes that leaders have and consider which leadership positions in the school they would want to put themselves forward for. We want our students to play an active and positive role in all aspects of school life and we believe that all students should be given the opportunity to hold a position of responsibility that impacts the school as a whole. Their main focus will be looking at issues or ideas which affect the students themselves, therefore having an opportunity to be part of decisions which affect them. The following leadership roles will be open to all year 8 students who wish to apply:

 Teaching and classroom subject leaders  School counsel representatives

 Subject champions  House leaders

By adopting one of these roles, our students will gain the confidence to speak up, take control, share ideas and opinions on what they think we could change and create to make our school a better place for them. More details will follow detailing how students can apply for one or more of these roles. Good luck to all who apply!

Year 9 YES Conference On Tuesday 26 March, a group of our Year 9 students attended the annual YES Conference. The educational conference event organised by Norma Green OBE; is aimed at helping young students gain employment skills; students took part in a variety of activities such as reviewing case studies of job profiles and acting as delegates for the day. At the end of the event, students were presented with certificates from Loughton Town Mayor Councillor, Stephen Murray, and we received great feedback from all in attendance, who said they felt excited and motivated for the future following the experience.

University Fair This week twenty five year 12 students travelled for Bancroft’s School for a University Fair. Some of the most prestigious universities were attending and students were able to have one to one discussions with them about their courses on offer. They also had the chance to collect prospectuses so they can fully research their future university opportunities. It was great to see the students really thinking about their futures and finding some exciting possibilities Students can now start thinking about which universities they would like to visit for open days to find out more.

Year 11 Sixth Form Interviews All year 11 students who have applied to Roding Valley Sixth Form for September have now been interviewed. Students presented really well and the Senior Leadership Team were really impressed with the calibre of their interviews and how well they performed. Students will receive offer letters next week and the Year 11-12 Transition Day will be on 4th July. We welcome year 11 applicants to join us so they can experience a day in the life of a sixth former. I'm really looking forward to start working with them in September.

EPQ Presentations

Work Shadowing

Year 13 students really impressed us this week when they completed their Extended Project Qualification Presentations with Miss Bingham. Students have independently researched a variety of subjects from the empowerment of women throughout the 20th century to genetic engineering in the 20th Century - Is it ethically defensible? Students completed some fantastic presentations and were interesting to listen to.

Please can we remind Year 12 parents that students should be well underway with obtaining their work shadowing for week commencing 22nd July. They need to complete a form which they have been emailed and can obtain from a copy from the Sixth form office. The deadline for submission is 26th April as we don't want this process to interfere with their end of year exams. Any students unable to obtain a work shadowing placement will be expected in school. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get a meaningful and insightful look into their future career path.
