It has been a really purposeful week here in school. Our students’ focus has been directed towards the upcoming public external exams. A reminder to parents that the last day before study leave is: Monday 13th May: Year 11 Monday 20th May: Year 13 Although this is the last day that the students will be in normal lessons, there will still be teachers available to support our students right the way through their external exam period. Details of the support offered and teacher availability will be emailed separately. We have also included within this bulletin our full external Examination timetable for your information.

390pts

This week the Year 9 enjoyed their final Academic Lecture, in this series. Mr Melvin our Head of MFL used the language of Japanese to demonstrate the benefits of learning a language.

400pts

Tickets are currently being sold for our school production of Legally Blonde Junior. The performance is next Thursday 9th May at 7pm in the school hall. Tickets are available on ParentPay at the cost of £5 a ticket, please arrive promptly. The students have worked incredibly hard and it looks like it will be an amazing show, I hope to see lots of you there. Message from Mr Dobson Year 7 examinations start week beginning May 13th and you will find the timetable below. You should note that the timetable is for the exams in the Hall only all other exam will be during lesson time. There is no Maths exam as this was completed a few weeks ago. All revision material is being uploaded onto SMHW. During Period one this week the students have been looking at E-Safety and being safe online - which I'm sure you will agree is vital in the modern social media world that we are all living in. In today’s Assembly, Mrs Preston did an excellent presentation to introduce the Year 7 Mock Election. This is being held in two weeks’ time and is an opportunity for our students to experience the processes involved when deciding how to cast their votes. It will be very interesting to see the results which I will of course publish in the Parent Bulletin. The Year 7 assembly was also devoted to celebrating the success of our student for Progress, ATL and attendance. Please enjoy the photos included in this bulletin.

Year 7 Skills Lesson

Wilson-Bryan, Winkworth, Winspear, Zenelaj, Zilute,

Message from Miss Williams It has been a great start to the term and this week we came together to celebrate the successes of our students over the last term. We led a celebration assembly with the Year 8's, taking the opportunity to reflect on the continued hard work and growing maturity within the Year group. The rewards themselves truly reflected the effort and tenacity our Year 8 students have shown, however it has been the development of their character and their support of each other that has most impressed. It was clear that all Year 8 Form Tutors could not have been more proud of them.

Johnny Doherty “For his fantastic effort and improvement. “ Nominated by Mrs Lafferty

Let us use all of this motivation and channel it into our Assessment Week beginning May 20th!

8A RLA “Love this class - their energy and enthusiasm is infectious”. Nominated by Mrs Lafferty

A great morning was had by our Sportability team at Debden Park High School today with Mr Allen, as they were able to take part in a range of activities which they would not normally be able to access in PE Lessons. The activities included boccia, target golf, lacrosse, golf and fencing. The event is a chance for the team to socialise with students from the other local secondary schools as well a chance to enjoy different sporting activities. With the whole Sportability team in attendance, they really enjoyed it, with a few of the team favouring the fencing whilst the others enjoyed the golf the most.

Message from Mr Ryan It was a pleasure to celebrate the success of our year 9 students in their awards assembly this week. It is always lovely to acknowledge the hard work that the students put into their lessons in school. Students are rewarded for the best Attitude to Learning, the Top Progress Points and Highest Attendance. One thing that has become clear to the year group is that if you have a good attitude in lesson then you are bound to do well. We also had a very interactive speech for the 40/40 Group from Mr Melvin about the benefits of learning a language. I'm sure if you ask your children they might be able to remember how to count to ten in Japanese!

I also look forward to seeing so many of the Year group in the school's production of Legally Blonde which is on Thursday 9th May; details are further on in this bulletin.

Ward,

Yeomans,

The academic year is almost over and the honeymoon period of terms 1 and 2 are all but distant memories at this stage. The only thing looming on the horizon is the evitable exam period which we have now entered. There is still plenty of time, however, to get on top of your workload and to do well. Follow some of the exam tips below to defeat the exams.

1

Prioritize Your Workload Get to grips with what exams you have, what knowledge you need and what time you have. Familiarise yourself with the type of questions asked and build a revision list based on exam questions. Tutors for teaching staff may have given some tips about the exam - prioritise these subject areas.

2

List your exams in chronological order and begin the Consolidate what you already know offensive!

The night before an exam isn’t the time to start reading up on a brand-new topic. Remember exams aren’t there to catch you out: they exist to see what you know already. Focus on a few key areas that you’ve covered well instead of spreading yourself thin across the entire course. Be smart about what topics you choose to revise.

3

Create a timetable - and stick to it. A regular revision pattern will help your confidence as well as ensuring you don’t burn out. Draw up a plan according to your exam timetable and be disciplined in obeying it. You can get a lot achieved in a day’s work so scheduling a normal working day of 9am - 5pm with a break in the morning, lunch and an afternoon break is a lot more beneficial than telling yourself that you’ll study for the day; and spending half the time watching videos on YouTube but staying at your desk until 11pm.

Ban access to the internet / mobile phones/ social media unless it’s work-related but allow yourself to visit Facebook etc. in your break time. When 5pm rolls around, put down the books and take the evening off to do what you want. If you have spent the day doing quality revision then you have earned your time off and will feel good in yourself. Remember, it’s the quality and not quantity of your study hours.

Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

Maintain a balanced lifestyle

4

Exams are important, but it’s equally salient to take time out to relax and to maintain a connection with the real world as well as getting enough sleep and eating properly. Your mind needs to rest too so plan breaks into your day and don’t cut sport out of your life. Exercise is a great way to unwind, relieve stress and leave you feeling motivated - you can easily slot in a quick 20-minute walk or jog into your day which will break you out of the revision monotony. A full night’s sleep is also important and necessary to help you maintain concentration during the day.

5

5. Don’t panic!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the work you have to do or feel that there isn’t enough time, you might not feel like stepping away from your desk but a short break will help settle your mind and return you to normalcy. Succumbing to negative thinking happens to us all from time to time, but we can overcome it and return our minds to positive vibes. Give a friend a call and talk about non-exam related matters; have a laugh and let the weight be lifted from your shoulders. Ten minutes now won’t harm your study continuum but will improve your attitude and motivation.

Students should be referring to the pink and blue personal learning checklists in their English exercise books. They should be using them to identify areas they need to work on. They then need to use the purple booklets issued in class to practise their exam technique. English teachers are happy to support students if they bring their questions to them for marking and advice. Students should be reading non-fiction articles.
