RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 5th April 2019 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School We have now reached the end of this term and spring is in full flow with the clocks going forward by an hour last weekend and Easter just around the corner.
530pts
I would like to thank our parents for their continued support over this past term; it has been a really positive term, with students making huge strides in their progress and outcomes across the whole school. I am delighted to announce that after a challenging round of Interviews on Monday, we have appointed Maisha Khondokar and Sam Copeman as our new Head Girl and Head Boy. Maisha and Sam will be supported in their roles by Imogen Kemp, Mashrur Khondokar and Asha Uddin, who have been appointed the position of Deputies. Congratulations to all of the students that applied for these positions; the decision was incredibly hard to make, all of the applications were quite outstanding. The students showed maturity and initiative beyond their years and displayed tremendous aptitude to Leadership. I am incredibly proud of every student, from their application to their presentations at interview. We have attached to this bulletin the Easter Edition of our student Magazine ‘RVHS Exposed’; we hope you enjoy reading this publication and thank Miss Bingham and all of the students involved for their hard work.

Please can I ask the parents of our Year 11 and 13 students to remind them to attend the Revision Support sessions over the Easter break and to keep up their study in anticipation of their upcoming exams in May. You can find the Revision Session Timetables further on in this bulletin.
390pts Students, please remember to organise your time, remove distractions, keep mentally and physically fit, eat and sleep well and most importantly remember to have a good balance between study and fun. For the rest of the student body, I hope that you take the time to relax and enjoy the break, so that you return to school refreshed and ready for the summer term.
Just a polite reminder, can please ask parents/carers to be considerate with their parking throughout the school day, the school has received a number of complaints from our local residents regarding cars being parked across private driveways. Lastly please make use of the forthcoming Easter holiday to replace any uniform, equipment or shoes as appropriate. Note that black trainers are not acceptable unless worn for specific, evidenced medical purposes. All jumpers must be school issue and skirts must be worn below the knee. Where medical evidence is provided, then the student is issued with a mauve card which they can show if challenged. The students’ appearance in our community is very important to the good standing of the school and our uniform is now of a very high standard which I intend to maintain. I thank you for your support in advance; if anyone is suffering financial hardship then please do contact Miss Dyer to discuss, we will always do our best to support where we can. Please note that school reopen to all students for the start of the summer term on Tuesday 23rd April at 8:35am. I wish you all a fantastic Easter. Mrs S Jenner Headteacher

Message from Miss Williams As we end another term, I just want to congratulate our Year 8 students on all of their achievements. They have all displayed all of our core values whilst striving to be the best they can be, taking advantages of all the opportunities we have to offer. A group of students attended a major new project aimed at helping to protect students from online grooming; this event has been launched in Essex following a real-life murder of 14 year-old Breck Bednar in Grays, in February 2014 by Lewis Daynes. The event highlighted the risks of grooming and asked the question ‘Do you know who your online friends really are?’ and the message was informative and vital, which is why our students will be sharing what they learnt from the day to their peers in their very own student led workshop. Our students were engaged and enthusiastic throughout, making the school proud. This week, we also had a group of students visit LSE University as part of the ACE programme. Aiming for a College Education (ACE) encourages students to start thinking about the possibility of going into higher education. This half-day, activitybased session gave our Year 8 students an insight into university life, the opportunities available in higher education, and the options attending university can open up to them. Students were very positive about their experience and all benefited from exploring their future options. Please have a restful break but please keep busy with our stretch and challenge activities and competitions on google classroom!
Girls Tag Rugby House Competition Well done to 8B Hawking House Girls who won the Girls Tag Rugby House Competition this week!

Hartaj Singh ‘For answering a brilliant six mark exam question in his end of unit exam, and also achieved the highest score in his Science class. Well done!’
Johnny Stuchfield ‘What a superstar he is! Hardworking, resilient and a fantastic role model’.
Thank you to all students who have shown an interest in the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time theatre trip. We have been heavily oversubscribed for this trip and therefore in order to make this a fair system for all students we have decided via a ballot. Message from Mr Fintan Now that the clocks have gone forward and the evenings are lighter, it can only mean that spring is here and we are about to break for the Easter Holidays. While the next two weeks are a good opportunity to un-wind and get out and do things! I would like to ask that you stay safe. After the May half term, we will be issuing students with their new GCSE timetables and our Year 9 students will start their GCSE journey. I would like to make sure that everyone is well rested and ready for the hard work ahead. Please have a fantastic Easter break!

Message from Miss Reed As we approach the end of an extremely busy Spring Term, Year 10 students are now approximately a year away from their PPE examinations. Well done to those students who are part of the 'Speak out Challenge', delivering their speeches during Year 7 assembly this morning. Parents Evening on Thursday was a great success with lots of positive feedback from staff. If you were unable to attend, please ensure you email subject teachers individually for some feedback. As we move into the Summer Term, there will be lots going on for Year 10 students. We will be incorporating a revision technique session into our period one programme to start preparing students to revise effectively. The week commencing 3rd June 2019 is the end of year exams for Year 10 students and Careers Week takes place the week commencing 23rd June where students will spend time writing up there CV and taking part in a mock interview in order to prepare them for sixth form applications. During that week is the ‘Take your Child to Work Day’ on Tuesday 24th June. Students should be in the process of organising this; slips should be handed back to form tutors by Monday 6th May. I would like to say a huge well done to all our Y10 students and wish them a restful Easter Break ready to return motivated for the term ahead.
On Tuesday 24th April, Roding Valley will be hosting the ‘Regional Finals for The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge’. As a hosting school for the first time, we are allowed to enter two Year 10 students to represent the school. We are inviting students and parents to come along and support our students as they go head to head against 18 other winners in the West Essex region. It will be a full house so we encourage students and parents to arrive early. The show will begin at 6:30pm and will go on until 8:30 pm. There will be a panel of eight external judges, who will select the regional Winner and present them with the trophy on the night.

It is going to be BIG!!

Message from Mr Price. It has been an extremely busy term with all focus on the impending public exams starting in May. There has been a real drive and determination about the Year group (particularly over the last month) in preparation for the GCSE’s and it’s wonderful to see the pupils giving themselves the best possible chance of success. Many of our students are attending interventions and revision sessions and really going the extra mile to secure their best possible grades. It is essential that the pupils do not take their ‘foot off the gas’ and continue with their hard work and independent revision over the coming weeks. We, as teachers are proud of their efforts as I’m sure you are as parents/guardians. I hope you all have a restful break and look forward to seeing you all in the summer term for the last push!
This week, 62 of our Year 11 boys were taken off timetable to learn ‘how to write a newspaper article’. Journalist; Stefan Stern came to host a talk for our Year 11 students about Journalism and how to write an article for a broadsheet newspaper in preparation for their GCSE exam in June. Stefan Stern has been writing and commenting on business, management and politics for over two decades. His career in journalism has included stints at Euromoney, the BBC, Management Today magazine and the Financial Times, where he was the management columnist between 2006 and 2010. He has won awards for his management writing and blogging. We would like to thank Stefan providing our students with this fantastic opportunity!
We are nearly there!
Year 11 Business Trip This week, 15 of our Year 11 students brushed up their skills for their upcoming Business Exam when they visited the GCSE Business Conference! Well done to our Year 11 Chemists, who created some excellent examples of Buzan Mind maps this week! Keep up the good work!

Monday 29th April to Thursday 2nd May: Art and Photography Exams
Monday 13th May: Last formal day of teaching for Year 11 students
May Half Term Week:
The clear message that was given to the students was that if they were happy with their results then this is excellent but keep going as their will still be improvements that can be made. If students were disappointed then it is not too late and small changes can make a big impact!

On Thursday the year 11’s had their PPE results morning. This was a great morning where the pupils could celebrate their all their efforts. Inevitably some pupils were disappointed but hopefully this will only spur them on to increase their efforts so that they do not experience this same disappointment on results day in August.

Year 12 MFL Trip The Languages Department with the Year 12 French students attended an excellent presentation on Immigration delivered completely in French at Forest School on Wednesday 27th March. The presentation attracted language students from four other schools and was a great opportunity to have an insight into the impact of Immigration through the lens of three generations. Our students found the presentation very insightful, informative and managed to understand the key points of the presentation. Undoubtedly, our students have now a clear idea about the topic, which they will be studying in depth next academic year.
Well done to all of our Sixth Form students that applied for our Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputy positions this week. I am proud to announce that our new Head boy is Sam Copeman and Head Girl is Maisha Khondokar. Our new Deputies are Imogen Kemp, Mashrur Khonokar and Asha Uddin
