Endeavour

th

Week ending: Friday 30 November 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.

Message from the Head of School Today we were delighted to welcome The Rt. Hon. Baroness Tessa Blackstone to our school to speak with our Sixth Formers. Tessa Blackstone studied at the London School of Economics (LSE) where she went on to take her doctorate. She has held numerous positions of high office including; the Deputy Education Officer of the Inner London Education Authority and the Master of Birbeck College. Later in her career she worked as a policy advisor to the Cabinet. In 1987, Baroness Blackstone was awarded a life peerage and sits on the Labour benches in the Lords. After Labour came into power in 1997, she was Minister of State for Education and Employment and Arts Minister (2001-03). She has published widely in academic journals, and written a number of books mainly on social and educational policy. She was an incredibly interesting speaker and hopefully inspired our students but especially those studying Economics and Politics A level. Her key message was that our students should take every opportunity presented, to consider university and endeavour to be the best that you can be regardless of background or privilege. Baroness Tessa Blackstone visited Roding Valley High School as part of the Speaker4schools Programme. We have joined this programme to facilitate access to influential leaders of today. I am also proud to announce that Isabella Frost and Alistair Lanz, who out of 300 entries were voted winner and runner up in the Loughton Town Council Christmas Card Competition in the secondary school category. All winning designs will be displayed in Loughton Library from 28/11/18 to 12/12/18 and then Debden Library from 13/12/18 to 02/01/19. Well done to all the students who took part.

This week, we were also placed 19th out of 37 different schools in the Senior Maths Challenge. Congratulations to all our excellent mathematicians. Today our Stemnettes were back in action, a group of our Year 10 girls participated in the STEM Hackathon workshop creating websites. Thank you to Miss Patel for her organisation of these enrichment STEM events. As a school we recognise the importance of the disciplines of STEM in future careers. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). It has been another week of excellent sporting results, a special well done to our girls’ football team who for the first time got through to the last 16 of the Under 16 National Cup, unfortunately they were beaten by Passmores in a very close match. The student Christmas Dinner will be on Wednesday 12th December, the cost of the lunch is £3.00 and can be paid via their lunch account. The canteen will be selling tickets from next week. Both Year 13 PPEs (Pre Public Exams) and Year 9 Internal Exams start on Monday, both timetables are included in the bulletin. Students should actively be preparing for these exams. Senior

"I am really pleased for our team of students that took part in the Senior Team Maths Challenge at Queen Mary University. They performed incredibly well and finished in 19th place out of 37 schools from all over the South East and London, our best result ever. Well done to Mashrur Khondokar, Stan Shute, Igor Dasuzhau and Jamie Henderson. They really enjoyed the day and performed extremely well." Written by Mr Edeko – Head of Faculty: Maths

Today we were taught different coding and website tricks. It consisted of going onto different websites and changing them up to what we wanted. We also got the chance to make our own website using thimble and had the choice of either making a festival page or food page. Everyone was more persuaded about the festival one and thought this would be the best choice to have. We all had different ideas for this one topic and we all found it exciting and fun, I’d love to do another workshop like this again because I very much enjoyed it. In Years 7 to 9, pupils ‘Drop everything and Read’ for 20 minutes in every school day. Strong literacy is the key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications. We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time. Enjoy!

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. Plot Summary Hercule Poirot is the best detective there is! After a millionaire was maliciously shot on the famous train ‘Orient Express’, Poirot has the task of finding out who is guilty. Will he be able to solve this dubious puzzle? My Opinion of the Book This is an amazing book. Agatha Christie is probably the best Author ever and an expert in murder mysteries. It is very engaging; I could not put it down. Some people may say it’s gory, but it isn’t at all. There are 256 pages, which isn’t a lot. It was published on 1st January 1934, but old books are the best. My Recommendations I recommend it to anyone who likes mystery and adventure. Written by Bianca Nedelcu 7R

The Revenge of Seven by Pittacus Lore Plot Summary After spending years apart, the remaining Loric fight back against the Mogadorians. Despite losing five, they will do what it takes to be free and save the world. They might be strong alone, but they are stronger together. My Opinion of the Book I think it is an amazing book, being the finale; it is the best in the series. You can imagine you are there. It is extremely well written as you learn about the final pieces to the series puzzle. You can understand each characters identity and attitude. It was published on 26th August 2014 and is 417 pages long. It is a masterpiece to finish the collection of ‘I am Four’. My Recommendations I would recommend it to anyone. However the sci-fi fans and people who have read the series would enjoy it the most. Written by Santiago Levy 7R

Remember A young child and his father, Ink in a book, words on a page, Olivia Love in differentBird colours, Now he is left with a monochrome world, A young child who has seen too much, Still haunted by silence, The excruciating comfort of endings, Because he is never complete, The glass shatters, And he wonders what the last thing his father ever saw was, A hundred other soldiers, Who just saw him as another one of the enemy,

The piercing screech of a rifle was the last thing his father ever heard, Damp mud was the last thing his father ever smelled, Blood was the last thing his father ever tasted, He was the last thing his father ever thought of, A young child who cries, At the loss of his father and the loss of his country, And deep down his scars will tell him, He will never forget to remember.

Paper thin, skin stained with dirt, And he knowns the truth, His country is broken, But so is his world, Written by Poppy Tribe

We are writing to inform you of a project that will be taking place within our school between now and Christmas. This project is going to be a Foodbank Appeal for the local community. We will be working alongside Davenant Foundation School to do this and we are working very hard to ensure that we make a difference within our community to make many families’ Christmas a pleasant, enjoyable time of the year. We are asking our students to bring in items that can be donated to the Foodbank and help us make that difference. They accept a variety of things (some examples listed below) from dried pasta and long-life foods to baby products and toiletries. The dates that they have to bring these items into school are from 12th November until the 30th November. There are designated House boxes for students to place their donations in the wooden foyer area near Main Reception. This also going to be a competition between the Houses to see which house can collect the most donations. For any further information about this, you can visit the ‘Epping Forest Foodbanks’ website: https://eppingforest.foodbank.org.uk/2018/10/31/christmas-appeal/ or contact the school and we will try our very best to provide you with the necessary information. We are extremely grateful to be able to pass on your contributions to the local community.

This Christmas, the Food Bank requires: 

Tinned Fruit

Dried pasta

Sponge Pudding

Shampoo/Conditioner

Long Life Milk

Washing Powder

Rice 500g bags /Microwavable pouches

Deodorant

Bars of Chocolate

Shaving foam

Pasta sauce

Parents Save the Date! 10th Anniversary

Please save the date for our very special 10th Anniversary ‘Careers Fair’ on Thursday 31st January from 3.00pm until 6.30pm. Annually we organise the Careers Fair collaboratively as part of the Epping Forest Consortium. The Consortium consists of five local secondary schools as well as Epping Forest College. Due to large numbers and parking availability, Epping Forest College are once again hosting the event at their campus in Borders Lane, Loughton. This is not an open evening for Epping Forest College; however, there will be some departments from the College present. We are very excited this year as it is our 10th Anniversary of collaborative working and we have even more employers attending. We have prizes to be won on the evening of work experience placements as well as guest speakers to support parents and students with future career choices. The careers fair is for students in Years 9 through to Year 13 and their parents and should be seen as an essential part of your child’s preparation for the future. However, if your child is in Year 7/8 and you would like to come along, then please do so. If you have attended before we would encourage you to attend again as each year we have new exhibitors and it is an opportunity for students to really develop their networking and communication skills as well as finding out lots of information about future careers. Last year the careers fair was a big success and we are expecting it to be just as exciting this year. We have a huge variety of exhibitors attending from all sectors. Universities and Colleges will be present to offer advice for the short term and beyond. If the University that your child wants to apply to is not present it is still a good opportunity to speak to those present about university life, finance and funding and the application process. We hope the event will stimulate interest in a wide variety of careers and prove to be an invaluable experience for both parents and students. If you are unable to attend we still expect students to come along. As it is an informal event students will not have to wear school uniform. Should you have any further questions about the event please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards Mrs. Mason Careers Development Manager dmason@rodingvalley.net Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS, @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.  Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App.

But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself.
