Week ending: Friday 9 November 2018

“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.

Message from the Head of School The school wanted to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. All the students and staff joined together on the playground at 11am for a 2 minute silence. It was an incredibly reflective and respectful occasion with 1400 people standing together in silence. Please do read some of the poetry written by our Year 7 students to commemorate this historic event included in this bulletin. They have shown empathy and respect beyond their years, whilst remembering those that sacrificed their lives for the freedoms that we hold true today.

On Thursday evening, we celebrated the outstanding achievements of many of our Year 10 students; who were presented with awards for their success in their learning journey during Key Stage 3 (years 7 to 9). I was delighted to be joined on the stage by their Year Progress Leader, Miss Reed, our Chair of the Local Governing Body, Mr Barritt and the Town Mayor of Loughton, Mr Murray. We rewarded outstanding attainment at the very highest grades, exceptional progress from individual starting points and positive effort shown. I am very proud of all our students and look forward to be able to supporting them right through to their A levels. The details of all of the winners and their awards are included in this bulletin. I would like to invite all Year 11 and Year 10 to our Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 14th November from 5pm to 7pm. Please do come along, meet the new Director of Sixth Form Miss Wheaton, visit our first class teaching facilities and find out about our new exciting curriculum offer from our current sixth form students. We are an academic Sixth Form, our 2018 results showed significant improvements in our A level results and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). We offer outstanding pastoral support, careers guidance and leadership opportunities which enhance future CVs and UCAS applications. Our students currently enjoy participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme; have the opportunity to become a Youth Leader of Sport, taking part in community activities, mentoring our younger students and being House Captains. I look forward to meeting you there in the new Brook Building from 5pm; the talk which is at 6pm will be in the Main Hall.

Our House System is now in full flow and has created a wealth of healthy competition and collaboration within our school community. Last night there was a Tug of War competition with the teachers and the Sixth Form, the competition was won by Rendell House. Pankhurst won the recent Year 7 Poetry Competition and there have been a number of other activities this term including a football competition, designing postcards and attendance at our Open Morning. There will be many more to look forward to as the year progresses. The House System and the current standings are: 1st

I would also like to invite you to attend the Epping Forest Schools Parliamentary Debating Competition on Friday 16th November at 6.30pm in the main hall. Dame Eleanor Laing, MP will be hosting the event here at Roding Valley High School as we were the worthy winners last year. We have won this competition more times than any other local school and we can look forward to an exciting contest. It is with regret that I announce that the PTA Christmas Market had to be cancelled due to lack of interest in the running of the stalls. This is a real shame for the parents who worked so hard to arrange this event and for all the children of the school who greatly benefited from the additional funds raised last year. If you can offer support to the schools’ PTA then please contact, Natalie Sellears nsellears@rodingvalley.net Please do check the upcoming events but please note in your diary that the school is closed to students on Friday 23rd November. I trust that you will enjoy the rest of the bulletin. Have a great weekend Mrs Jenner

Remembrance Day Lest we forget As we come to this year’s Remembrance Day; our Year 7 students were asked to commemorate the event in the form of poetry, the results were amazing. We Remember We remember Their sacrifice, We remember The loss of life, We remember The poppies blanketing the fields, We remember The day they chose to yield, We remember the 11th November. Written by Athina Cristofe 7W

Remembrance Day Poppies are growing far and wide. And we’re buying them no matter what the size, We cherish the people that died, and poppies are used to remember them by. The poppy leaf faces 11 o’clock, for the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. As a Christmas celebration, they formed a collaboration. ‘No more fighting today!’ they said, We’ll play football instead. And because they surrendered, we remembered. The day they let guard down. Now every year With a peer, We celebrate how they fought for us. This coming Sunday will be 100 years of celebrating, cherishing and missing the people who dies for us. Witten by Olivia Leask 7W

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day, commemoration day of the First World War, to the generation that gave their lives to the glory of Britain, we thank you. You in particular, you gave it your all, Just for your homelands, The land where half of you were born, We commemorate you, All of you Not one, but millions, They shall not grow old one said, And it was true, Too true to be true, We thank you. Written by Ruzgar Yigit 7W Flanders Fields The 11th of November, A day to remember, On Flanders fields, Thousands were killed, In the Trenches, There were dirty stenches, And that’s why we remember the 11th of November, Our soldiers fought, Sadly some were caught. Written by Bertie Paris 7W

Congratulations to the winners of our Year 7 House Poetry Competition! All Winners have now been entered into the ‘Young Writers- Poetry Escape Competition’ and our students will find out by Christmas if their poems will be published.

Inner Feelings: Dandelion Here I am waiting to been seen

In the far distance

Marked time to be pulled

Just then a smile grew from my face

To be jerked out of these roots

The object came closer

To be wished on

It was a human coming straight at me

And to be making my way up

He pulled me out of the ground

Up where every other of me is

Closed his eyes and wished

It feels as if I’m invisible

If he could fly high

And can’t be spotted

He then blow me away

Then I see a glimpse

And that was the end of me.

We want to ensure that all of our students here at Roding Valley leave school not only with the best qualifications possible but also with a variety of personal attributes and skills. These will allow them to stand out from the crowd and achieve their goals. Competition for University places and employment today is ever increasing and together we can embrace this programme that will provide them with the Edge when it comes to taking the next step in their learning journeys. There are numerous activities in which your child can be accredited for; from something as simple as helping to lead a warm up in PE lessons to organising a bake sale for charity. There are also many activities outside school which can be accredited. We invite all parents and carers to be part of their journey by encouraging your child to talk to you regularly about their progress and achievements with the qualification using their online platform, which can be accessed here: https://theedge.pixl.org.uk/ As a School, we will be rewarding students regularly who show perseverance and determination to complete activities each term. During the last academic year, I had the absolute pleasure of working with our students supporting them to complete their qualification and viewing the sheer determination, enthusiasm and hard work. We are now looking forward to the annual national awards ceremony later in the year where our year 8 students can really get the recognition they fully deserve.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.  Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App.

But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself.
