To confirm, school closes to students for Christmas at 12.20pm on Wednesday 19th December 2018 and reopens at normal time on Monday 7th January 2019. Thank you to all the parents who attended the Winter Concert on Wednesday, it was a fabulous event with some outstanding performances from our students. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Savage for all of his hard work in making the concert a success. Please see the attached link to view a slideshow of fabulous pictures.

As a school, we really value our charity work and I was delighted that so many of you have so generously supported the Christmas collection for the Epping Forest Foodbank. This was organised by our Head Boy, Harry Boyd-Walker and Head Girl, Grace Cain with the support of their House Captains. The students decided to make the appeal a ‘House Competition’ and the ultimate winners were Rendell House. The final count was approximately 300kg of food and house hold items (the food bank weigh everything to estimate how many people it will be helping) and it was delivered to the delighted volunteers, who said that it was the biggest single donation they had ever received. You should have received a letter from our Sixth Form Charities lead, Sophie Ellicock-Williams who has organised a non-uniform day for all students on the last day of term, Wednesday 19th December. The donation of £2 will be split with half given to support CLIC Sargent, the UKs leading cancer charity for children and young people. The other half will be allocated to support lunch time activities for students here at Roding Valley High School.

School Christmas lunch is on Wednesday 12th December and costs £3.00. You will find attached to the email, the December edition of our Student Magazine ‘Exposed’. This magazine has been produced by our students; please can I ask you to take the time to read the wonderful articles inside. It has been a very positive time here at school, each Year Progress Leader has written a key message appropriate to their year group. It is truly wonderful to see so many students celebrated for their continual positive attitude and achievements. Please do read the essential revision messages given by Mr Price (Year 11) and Miss Wheaton (Year 12/13). Please do note the Year 12 PPE timetable; we are encouraging all GCSE / A level students to make their own revision timetable. The Get Revising website is a great support for all students. https://getrevising.co.uk/planner Is your Child in Year 11, 12 or 13 and considering Oxbridge / Russell Group Universities? If so, then please do speak to Miss Wheaton, our Director of 6th Form, to discuss some excellent insight opportunities. We also have our ex-Head Girl, Olivia Tinker who is currently studying at Cambridge University returning to speak to some of our students about her academic experience. On a more serious note, please can I ask for your continued parental support in ensuring that students are going straight home at the end of the school day. It is now dark very early, and this in itself can cause problems with road safety. Please encourage your child to only use well-lit roads and pathways on their journey home. There have been a couple of incidents at Loughton train station involving youths from outside of this area. My Senior Leadership Team always patrol the station area at the end of the school day, above and beyond that expected, as we want to ensure that all our students catch their buses and trains home safely. However, it is not the school’s responsibility to ensure their safety if they continue to hang around in the vicinity of the station and Sainsbury after normal travel times. The school’s expectation would be that our students would be away from these areas after 3:30pm, unless they are meeting parents or have stayed for extra –curricular activities. I cannot stress enough that the majority of our students are an absolute delight; I am sure that you do not want a small minority to bring the school’s good name into disrepute or there to be concerns for their safety beyond normal school times. Please enjoy the rest of this bulletin; I trust that all your Christmas preparations are well underway. The school is really beginning to feel very festive. Regards Sharon Jenner

Please can Parents remind our students that all Mobile Phones should be switched off at all times throughout the school day. If they are seen or heard by a member of school staff, they will be confiscated.

Morning Drop Off The schools main form of communication with parents is by email. If you are not receiving emails from the school, you can:  Check your Spam and move the last school email to your Inbox. Future emails should then make their way into your Inbox.  Phone the school to re-subscribe if you have unsubscribed to our emails in the past.  Provide us with an alternative email address We hope to send more information through the MyEd App once the subscription rates increase. Please can Parent /Carers remember that students must be delivered to school in a safe and secure manner, students must be dropped off in Brook Road and you must not stop or pause your vehicles on the yellow Zig Zag lines at the front of the school on Alderton Hill, so your child can hop out. Remember your child’s safety is our priority.

Thank you to all of the students and staff that have made contributions to our House Food Bank Competition. Hundreds of tins and packets of food have been collected and will be delivered to the Epping Forest Food Bank on Friday. The Christmas collection has been organised by Head Girl Grace Cain and Head Boy Harry Boyd-Walker. Grace said: "Harry and I are absolutely delighted with the response. "When we launched the appeal a few weeks ago we were hoping for a few items in each box but we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of staff and students and have plenty to deliver to the Epping Forest Food Bank on Friday." The students decided to make the appeal a 'House Competition' with Pankhurst students having currently donated the most items. Grace added: "Regardless of which house wins, it has been great to pull together as a whole school and do something to help our local community."

Assistant Headteacher Miss Sam Dyer said: "We are all very proud of Grace and Harry for launching the appeal. The response from our staff and students has been fantastic, just as I expected it would be. "We try to support as many different charities as we can. The Epping Forest Food Bank charity is the obvious local choice and supports so many local families all year round." The final Weigh In results were as follows: 1st Place: Rendall - 85Kg 2nd Place: Pankhurst - 62Kg 3rd Place: Murray – 50Kg 4th place: Churchill – 47Kg 5th Place: Hawking – 27Kg

This morning our Sportability team took part in the ‘WESSA Sportability Activity Morning’. Our team of Year 7's and 8's took part in a range of sports and activities. On the menu was; boxing, boccia, archery, unihoc and dodgeball. The whole team had a brilliant morning trying out these activities and socialising with other students from the local West Essex Secondary Schools. In Years 7 to 9, pupils ‘Drop everything and Read’ for 20 minutes in every school day. Strong literacy is the key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications. We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time. Enjoy!

Wartman by Michael Morpurgo Plot Summary: The main Character Wartman has a wart on his leg. Coincidently, it’s a big one. His life goes from simply amazing to depressing! But can Wartman figure out a way to overcome that, when the other children realise. Will his life ever be the same. My Opinion of the Book: Wartman is a very good book with lots of twists and surprises. There are certain parts of the book which make you want to carry on reading. The writer makes you feel like you’re there. Overall the book is a good one. Date published: 1998 My Recommendations: I recommend this book to anyone because it isn’t the longest book, but that doesn’t matter. The characters and the main part is my favourite. Written by Sonny Mead 7R

Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon Plot Summary: It’s about a boy called Henry and a boy called Peter, they are brothers. Peter gets Henry into trouble all of the time and sometimes for no reason. My Opinion of the Book: I like the book because it’s funny and it reminds me of my step-brother and it’s interesting. My Recommendations: I think anyone who likes to read interesting books, should read Horrid Henry. It is great fun reading Horrid Henry and it has lots of drama in it and comedy. It is a great book. Written by Ronnie Green

Narnia: The Magicians Nephew by C.S Lewis Plot Summary: Two children discover magic rings made by the boy’s uncle and they travel to a kingdom that is deserted. Digory hit a bell and a woman came to life. She was very strong, smart and said to be beautiful, but she tried to take over the world. My Opinion of the Book: It is alright, but at the start I was engaged, but by the end of the book, I found it boring and the same. My Recommendations: I think that anyone who likes a fantasy book with a lot of links to fairy tales would like this book. It is not the best book I have read. I would not personally recommend it if you do not like fairy tales. Written by Phelan Hopkinson 7R Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

Message from Mr Dobson I would like to reiterate once again that we work hard at ensuring that all of our students are safe in school and encourage them to stay safe on the journey to and from school. These are some options to think about to ensure our students are seen during dark mornings and nights: Colourful coats: Outer clothing like coats, jackets and hats would benefit from being bright, vibrant colours, ideally with some fluorescent sections to make students as easy to spot as possible and keep them warm during the winter months. Reflective materials: Wearing synthetic materials that reflect well such as waterproof materials, which are likely catch the light reflected from cars and bikes better than natural fabrics. Most waterproof coats and high visibility jackets will use these fabrics .

This week, Year 7 students have been taking part in the election for the Young Essex Assembly. The Assembly is a council of young people, who meet regularly and represent young residents in Essex in the same way as Councillors in Essex County Council do adult residents. Representatives from each tutor group were invited to vote for their chosen candidate, based on the candidate statements provided. Democracy is a valued part of our society and it was a good opportunity for our students to have their say on how they are represented in the local area.

Year 7 Students getting it Right!

Message from Miss Williams Revision strategies come down to personal preference – what works best for the individual. There are many interesting revision and study methods your child can include in their daily routine. People learn in different ways and revision /study methods should reflect their preference. Below are the three main types of learners. You and your child can determine which group he/she belongs to and guide them to the best revision methods to suit. Visual Learners: they learn better by sight; by seeing and observing. They prefer:  Charts  Images  Graphs  Drawings  Colour  Diagrams Best Revision Tools: cue cards, timelines, notes on a pin board, colour coded revision notes, mind maps, creating drawing of topics, practice diagram labelling, highlighting and annotating important keywords, facts and definitions. Auditory Learners: they learn better by hearing the information. They prefer:  Watching and listening to lectures and lessons  Hearing explanations and answers  Listening to recorded notes  Talking out loud to themselves or to other people about the topics Best Revision Tools: reading the notes out loud, watching and listening to videos and podcasts, recording their own notes and playing it back, discussions with study group, discussion with parents about a topic, and making a song or rhyme about the revision notes. Kinaesthetic Learners: they learn better with practical and handson experience. They prefer:  Writing things down  Creating models and diagrams  Being active while studying  Explanations with real life examples Best Revision Tools: Writing revision notes over and over, creating revision flash cards, taking walks and talking about the topics, study group discussions, revising with real life examples, using mnemonics, and taking part in activities that involve the subject such as visiting a coastal area for the Geography topic Coastal Landscapes. If these revision tools are unfamiliar to you, a simple online search will provide you with all the information you need to understand them.

Message from Mr Ryan This week Year 9 students have been sitting their exams; I am delighted with their conduct and attitude. It is stressful taking one exam, never-mind three in a day. I have often asked the students how much sleep they are getting a night. I shared this before at the information evening but it is worth sharing again. To further support them , I will share with you a few tips to help aid better sleep.

“Teenagers need to be aware of the significance of persistently having difficulty getting to sleep, of waking a lot in the night and having difficulty getting up in the morning. This is especially worrying if they are tired or falling asleep during the day, feel irritable or depressed and have mood swings, as well as difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions properly. Lack of sleep has a major impact on concentration. Experts at Loughborough University have identified low attention span, slower thought processes and a drop in IQ as the first signs of tiredness”.

Tips for Better Sleep! Olivia  Keep lightsBird dim at night to encourage melatonin production.  Get them out into sunlight in the morning - to switch off melatonin, increasing alertness.

Curb caffeine, advises The Sleep Council. For some people, caffeine can reduce the ability to sleep for up to 10 hours after it is consumed. Try a warm milky drink or herbal tea in the evening.

Avoid stimulating activities like listening to loud music, playing computer games and watching TV for an hour or more before bed.

Do not eat too much too late: An overfull stomach will interfere with sleep (but do not go to bed hungry, either!).

If stress or exam nerves are triggering insomnia, calming foods like warm milk, lettuce or turkey can help. Alternatively, try the herbal remedy valerian, which calms nerves and promotes sleep.

Do not try to catch up on sleep at weekends: Late nights and long lie-ins further disrupt the body clock.

Too much junk-food diet and too little exercise will only make sleep more difficult so try to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Message from Mr Price Well done to all year 11s for their behaviour, attitude and application during the PPE’s. I have had lots of positive comments from staff as to how year 11 conducted themselves throughout the exams. The results will be sent out to all parents by the end of the term.

A special mention goes to the Y11 drama cohort. They have recently completed their Component 2 drama practical and were great. They have really gelled as a group in the last few weeks and have put incredible passion and hard work into this first real test of their skill. All students were staying late to rehearse over the last few weeks and many of them put in hours and hours of extra effort. Well done everyone involved!

We are currently encouraging students to enter the New College of Humanities essay writing competition. This opportunity will broaden student’s horizons, gets them thinking outside of their academic studies and would look great on a university application in the future. Students can choose to answer one of the following questions to be in the chance of winning a cash prize. Art History: ‘Oscar Wilde claimed that ‘All art is quite useless’. Can art’s uselessness be a source of its usefulness?’ Economics: ‘Nudges have been successfully used by governments around the world to influence people’s behaviours (Thaler 2008), but will we become immune to such ‘tricks’?’ English: ‘What are literary critics for?’ History: ‘Can history teach us lessons?’ Law: ‘Was the EU Commission correct to fine Google for abuse of a strong market position in online markets?’ Philosophy: ‘What kinds of inequality, if any, are unjust?’ Politics & International Relations: ‘What measures can be taken to increase voter turn-out at elections?’ For more information visit: https://www.nchlondon.ac.uk/essay/

The UpSKILL Enterprise Workshop was held on Wednesday 5th December 2018, hosted by VisionPath at the international law firm Osborne Clarke, at their office near St Paul’s. We attended with a group of our A-level students, and the focus was on how enterprise and entrepreneurship skills could help shape their future careers. We had a fantastic group of employer partners on the programme, in sectors like engineering, media and finance. It proved be a real eye-opener for our students as it turned out to be a fun and inspiring day where students worked with professionals from different employers and got to devise big ideas to change the world! They invented a product, did the necessary research, and financial estimates before working out a 3 year profit plan which they presented to the panel and to all other students present. There were many high quality presentations on the day, but our students were fabulous and held their own against the teams from the other schools.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App.

But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself.
