RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 10th May 2019 Message from the Head of School

We were really lucky to have the Young Shakespeare Company in today performing Macbeth to our Year 10 and Year 11 students. This was fantastic, live revision for our students and really helps to bring the play to life. Macbeth is one of the main texts for the English Literature exam and the students need to remember quotes and characters. It was a really vibrant and enjoyable performance. Hopefully, they will all take something from it. Theatre has been an integral part of the school week, with last night’s performance of ‘Legally Blonde Junior’. It was fabulous and exactly what a school production should be. The students of all ages were having fun and really loving being part of something special. They performed to a packed audience, the hard work and enthusiasm they displayed was amazing. There were many stand out performances but our Year 11, Eloise Booth was a brilliant ‘Elle’. A special thank you to all the staff who supported this fantastic event but especially, Mrs Walker, Miss Smith, Miss Calay and Mr Wilson. We are also really appreciative of the parental support.

Since the success of our previous University style lectures, we decided to continue with Mr Cocker delivering a lecture on Weimar Nazi Germany to our Year 11 students. It had all of our History students engaged.

A reminder that Monday 13th May is the last day of lessons for our Year 11 students. From Tuesday, they will only be in school for their GCSE exams and planned revision classes. The schedule of revision will be emailed separately. Can I take the opportunity to wish them all the best of luck in their exams. The teachers at Roding Valley High School really do go the extra mile to support the students; there are targeted revision sessions throughout the exam period and during half term break there will also be a full programme of revision classes. The half term timetable will be available in the next edition of the parent bulletin and will be distributed to all of our exam students. We really want every student to achieve their full potential. If your child has been invited then please ensure that they attend. Please do read the rest of the bulletin, this is only a snapshot of the amazing work being completed daily here at the school and so much more is celebrated. Can you note the upcoming events below, especially the PTA Bingo Night which is on Friday 7th June at 6:30pm, full details of this event are further on in this bulletin. I hope you have a lovely weekend. Mrs S Jenner Headteacher

Congratulations to our year 13 Art students who completed a gruelling 15-hour exam this week. This is the culmination of 7 years of art studies at Roding Valley and the work is powerful, provocative, thoughtful, meaningful and, ever so slightly, disturbing. Well done girls, your work is amazing!

Congratulations to Aman Spall 11T, who was the winner for April’s House Photography Competition, the theme for last month was ‘Detail’. Well done Churchill! Aman’s fantastic photo was chosen by Ms. Kalair as she makes a welcome return to our Photography Department. The theme for the May competition is:

Last night, parents and teachers were dazzled by the school’s bright acting and singing stars, who took part in a school production of Legally Blonde, The Musical. The cast spanned a variety of year groups – including the year 11 and 12s’, who committed to the rehearsal and production time during their revision and exam period – a fantastic achievement. The production couldn’t have taken place without the support from the student and teacher creative team, parents, and The Forest Musical Theatre Company. Bravo!

Message from Mr Dobson Can I ask that any parents/careers who have yet to finalise their payments for the Residential do so as a matter of urgency, as we are now finalising all details of the trip. The Year 7 examination week starts next week and I have included a few tips for our students to help them through their exams.

Do not forget that it is natural to be nervous. It actually gives your brain the extra adrenaline it needs to make the final effort.

If your mind goes blank, do not worry, look at the question again, and write down some notes, it will get your brain ticking over again.

Do not start writing until you know what the instructions are.

Allow a little bit of time at the end to check through your work to see if any changes need making. Examiners have said that this can make the difference between a higher and lower grade.

The Year 7 Exam Timetable has now been amended and please see a copy of this is below:

To say I am proud of 7W is understatement. To achieve the level of attendance they have achieved is absolutely phenomenal and I could not be happier. Attendance plays a key part of academic success and this level of attendance show how dedicated these pupils are to their studies. Well done 7W and keep up the good work!! Message from Mr Ryan Students will be finding out what they have been allocated for their options subjects on Monday. This will mark the period of time where if there are any concerns about what courses students have been placed in, they should contact either myself or Mr Mammen to see what can be done. New student timetables will then be created and distributed to our Year 9 students to start after half term. This week has been another excellent one with students participating in the school production of Legally Blonde. It was lovely to be able to cheer on William Cratchley, Cai Gunning. I was very impressed. Over the next two weeks we will be selecting those students with the highest achievement points to go on the Year 9 rewards trip to Thorpe Park.

Message from Miss Reed We are now into the final term of the school year, with our Year 10 students now over half way through their GCSE studies. This time next year, students will be very close to sitting their final examinations. We have begun embedding revision techniques into our P1 programme on a weekly basis run by Ms Larkin. Last week saw them complete Buzan Mind Maps and this week Cornell notes. These are vital for students to be using in preparation for their June PPE's. There are lots of opportunities arising for our year 10 pupils including YES prefect applications where students work with the New Year 7 cohort in September to ensure they settle into Secondary school life. There will also be other prefect and captain roles on offer linking to our house system. Careers Week is approaching fast, where on Monday 24th June students will have a Careers Drop Down Day which will involve typing up there CV document. A reminder that on Tuesday 25th June is the 'Take your child to work day’. Letters should be been handed back into form tutors by Thursday 9th May next week. On Wednesday 3rd July, students will then have their mock interview day in preparation for sixth form and college.

Today our Year 10 and 11 students had the opportunity to experience a performance of Macbeth, bringing the text that they have been studying for their GCSE English Literature course to life. They all seemed to enjoy the performance and we wish our Year 11 students the best of luck with their exams next week. Thank you to the Young Shakespeare Company for their amazing performance.

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence. 0208-508-1173 On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter . or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.

Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) should you require leave for your child, a letter detailing your exceptional circumstances should accompany it. Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school. For full details regarding attendance, please see our Attendance Policy, which can be found on our website or contact Mrs. Jeanette Low, our Attendance and Welfare Manager on the school number.

Guidance for Common Ailments Please see on the following page guidance from the NHS of common childhood illnesses; this advises what type of illness requires time off from school and what does not. Should you require further guidance please contact the school on 0208-508-1173
