RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 15th March 2019 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School
I would like to thank all of Parents that attended our Year 7 Parents Evening last week; it was a very positive evening and I hope that the information provided will prove useful in supporting your child with their learning. This week, I have felt very privileged to be involved Year 11 Sixth Form interviews. We do have record numbers applying and our application process and entry requirements are quite rigorous. It was nice to speak with such aspirational young people and spend some time on an individual basis, discussing their interests and goals for the future. Parents of Year 11 and 13 students will have received a letter this week inviting them to attend our Exam Support Evening on Monday 25th March at 6pm. I would encourage parents to attend as the following topics will be covered, which help you to support your child through their upcoming exams:
Important information regarding public examinations including resources to take away.
Practical revision strategies that you can use at home- involving both students and parents.
How to use your son/daughters report/PPE results to inform revision.
How to plan revision time effectively over the weeks and months ahead. Over the coming weeks, our staff will be teaching our exam students a different revision technique each week, next week our students will all be learning how to create and use the Buzan Mind Map to revise. Please visit: https://imindmap.com/how-to-mind-map/ for further information on Mind Mapping.

As usual the school will be running a full programme of support for our GCSE/ A level students during the Easter holidays. I am always so grateful for the excellent and committed staff, who are always prepared to come and support the students at this crucial time.
Not all schools offer such a programme and many students find the structure offered invaluable in preparing for their exams and ultimate success. The programme will be emailed to both parents and students over the coming. The majority of sessions will be targeted at certain students identified as needing additional support or challenge. At Roding Valley High School, we are continually striving to improve the ways in which we communicate with our Parents and local community. So with this in mind; this week, all parents will have received an email regarding our Parent Questionnaire, please can i ask if you could take 2 minutes out of your day to complete this questionnaire as it will help us to improve both the content of our bulletin, its frequency and the method in which you receive it. I have included the link to the questionnaire below:
Please can I remind parents that we are entering a team for the Swimathon on Friday 29th March at Loughton Pool in aid of Cancer Research. The team has now been decided, details of which are further on in this bulletin. Thank you so much to the students, parents, teachers and governors who will be taking part. If you would like to contribute by sponsoring our team, please go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rodingvalleyhighschool to help us reach our target of £750 in support of Marie Currie and Cancer Research. Have a great weekend, Happy St. Patrick’s Day for Sunday Mrs S Jenner Headteacher
The school’s main form of communication with parents is by email. If you are not receiving emails from the school, you can: Check your Spam and move the last school email to your Inbox. Future emails should then make their way into your Inbox. Phone the school to re-subscribe if you have unsubscribed to our emails in the past. Provide us with an alternative email address We hope to send more information through the MyEd App once the subscription rates increase. The Rudolph Walker Inter-School Drama Awards Essex As part of the Rudolph Walker Inter-School Drama Awards, our Year 10 Drama students were able to spend some time working with actor Robbie Gee. Robbie Gee is an extremely experienced actor, who has been in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Underworld and many other roles in film, TV and theatre. He will be returning to direct their play, which will be penned over the next two weeks by Lara from Year 10. Then on 29th March, school from across Epping Forest and Harlow will come together for one day on stage to battle it out. Our students will have to write and direct a performance that will wow the industry judges and audience with the help of their mentor – Robbie. Let’s wish them good luck! If you would like tickets to this event details are at the end of this bulletin.
On Thursday 14th March, eight Year 7 athletes took a trip to Southend Leisure Centre. We were representing the West Essex District after successfully winning our local area event last week. We participated in several events, such as the obstacle relay and individual races. We also took part in all the field events, such as speed bounce and vertical jump. With some strong competition and some very talented competitors, we finished 7th out of 10 schools in the Essex County Championships. Even though we didn’t win, we all had an amazing time and exceeded our expectations. Written by Teddy Bender

On Thursday, our Year 8 students visited the ‘Big Bang Fair at Hertfordshire & Essex High School and Science College, they had a fantastic time, where only too pleased to write a review of their experience. Miss Patel kindly planned this educational trip that was really eyeopening. We first looked at different presentations from multiple schools. My favourite presentation was the real life heart. The lovely Sixth Formers’ showed us the openings of the heart and I even got to feel the inside of the heart! We then went to upstairs to see lots of eye-opening careers. My favourite was when the friendly lady showed us loads of options for the paths of our futures. It was a very good trip and everyone there was very kind. Thank you Miss Patel for organising it. Written by Eesha Gandhi 8W The thing I found most interesting was the electromagnet, and how it slowed the magnet down. The thing that inspired me the most, was the architecture, this was because it showed how you could help your neighbourhood become more eco- friendly. I found the day very exciting and inspiring! Written by George smith 8V and Henry Twyford 8T I found out today that it takes 390 elastic bands to explode a watermelon. Also today, I have spotted on a sheet the hazards in an office I am inspired by how many elastic bands can explode a melon as well I have seen what happens when our heating is let out of our house Written by Hayden Porter 8R
We thought that stand 13 was the best because first of all the people there were giving us lots of information. They also told us a lot about what the intestine and how it digests food. They used a pair of tights and clamp stands to hold it in place and they used a mixture of all brain and water, which was what the food inside the intestine would look and feel like. Written by Helice Hawkins, 8X and Maisie Southgate 8R

Message from Mr Dobson This week, Year 7’s have once again been enjoying their time on their own AstroTurf area - the girls have been practising for the weekly football match against the boys. The students certainly utilise their extra 20 minute lunch break to fuel up before the lunch time matches.

Parents Evening last week was a great success and thanks to all parents and carers for coming to RVHS and contributing to such a positive evening. This week we are having a significant focus on students having the correct equipment, a DEAR reading book and school standard uniform. You can find the basic equipment list on our website. Our assembly this week was on the problems of litter and I reminded the Year 7’s about their personal responsibility to keep the school and local environment free from litter. This week’s Period 1 Character and Culture lessons have focused on oral communication and the processes of expressing information or ideas by word of mouth. They have learnt more about the types and benefits of oral communication, and discussed how one can improve their own oral communication abilities.
”For her fantastic independent research, where she found lots of gruesome statistics and details on the ‘Black Death’. Well done Lilian- I am really proud!! Nominated by Mrs Preston
On Thursday the Year 7 boys and the Year 8 Sportshall athletics teams travelled to Southend to represent West Essex in the Essex County Sportshall Athletics Finals. With the best schools from all corners of Essex having qualified to represent their District, this competition is always going to be tough. All three Roding Valley Teams had qualified after winning the West Essex Competition the week before and showed why they should be there with some fantastic individual and team performances throughout these finals. Both Boys finals had 9 schools including Roding Valley competing whilst the Year 8 girls finals was out of 6 schools. The year 7 boys finished a respectable 7th place and hopefully they can use this experience next year to win the district finals and represent West Essex again at the County finals. The year 8 boys finished in 5th, the same position they finished in year 7 which is a great achievement. The year 8 girls team finished 3rd and picked up their bronze medals after an excellent performance throughout the afternoon with consistent finishes in the track events and some brilliant scores in the field events, matching the best ever achievement by a Roding Valley year 8 girls team since the current year 11 were in year 8. A brilliant day all round and well done to all the students who took part - Mr Allen and Miss Edwards Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

Message from Mr Ryan It has been another informative week for year 9. With the boys from the 40/40 lecture group finally being told what to expect over the coming weeks. We look forward to the whole group of 80 students to have their first lecture on Thursday 21st March. Also, we were given an assembly by nurses from the local immunisation team. All students need to return their consent forms so that they can have their immunisations (Tetanus/Polio/Meningitis). What I would ask is that you check your email to see if you are receiving the information that is being sent in electronic letter form as quite a few students claim not to know anything or not to have received any letters. If not could you let the school know so we can fix the problem.

Introducing The Team So Far:We have entered two teams of five to swim a total of 10kms. We have representing the teachers: Mohamed Ibrahim, Physics Teacher and Chris Dobson, Year 7 Progress Leader and Geography Teacher. Steve Abbott: parent to Thomas and George, and Natasha Dean Conway: parent to Joshua for the parents. Our students so far are Emily Fairhead, Jemima Purser and Ema Zilute Year 7, Joshua Conway and Nathan Wakinshaw, Year 8 and our Governor is Sharon Famiglietti.
Why Did You Want To Join the School’s Swimathon Challenge? “As a RVHS teacher I am really looking forward to being part of the Roding Valley team participating in an event that will raise money to help find a cure for cancer - a disease that has affected my life on far too many occasions.” C Dobson, Year 7 Progress leader and Geography Teacher “I'm so pleased to be able to support these charities as my family has been affected recently. I love swimming so will look forward to the challenge.” Emily Fairhead, Year 7 student “As a Governor and parent I wanted to organise a charity event that included the whole school community as I believe that schools need to be more than just education. On a personal note, I have lost several people to cancer, my cousin to Hodgkin Lymphoma at 16, several good friends including a mum of children in the school and my dad has suffered life-changing disfigurement to the disease so I would love to raise as much as we can for these charities. On a lighter note my swim strategy will be to hang onto the feet of one of our team who has the unfair advantage of in built flippers!” S Famiglietti, Governor and Parent You can support our challenge and see how much we have raised so far at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rodingvalleyhighschool

Apprenticeships Year 11 and Year 13 The following link takes you to the Careers Page on our website. For the most current vacancies click on apprenticeship news and follow the links to the vacancies. https://www.rodingvalley.net/students/careers/ Last week the whole school participated in National Careers Week. All students and staff took part in the ‘Buzz Quiz’ and found out what animal they were. This quiz is based on personality strengths and can be useful when thinking about future careers. If you would like to take the quiz then please visit:
Year 8 participated in a ‘Careers Drop Down Day’ and part of that day was spent with employers finding out about careers and the pathways to these careers. We had visiting alumni students sharing their pathways with the students and giving information and advice about the apprenticeships/university route that they have taken. The whole school received assemblies from the science department and looked at careers in STEM. We had a visit from the Managing Director and two apprentices from Capgemini for our sixth form students. Students were given information on the apprenticeship and sponsored degree programmes offered by Capgemini.
We had a lunch time drop in session with Aim Apprenticeships and students were shown how to research and apply. It was a great week for students to really start their research about careers. I regularly put information on Twitter please follow me to stay up to date with the Careers Department:

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.
What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In? Go to https://www.showmyhomework.co.uk/login What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school. Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Miss Paige Larkin: plarkin@rodingvalley.net Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama
What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:
We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:
Find out how our school uses Doddle Progress by watching our short video to find out how Progress works.

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along.
