“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 7th June 2019 Message from the Head of School I would like to welcome all of our students back for the final half term of this academic year. The public exams are now in full swing and our Year 9 students have started their GCSE Option subjects with enthusiasm and vigour; this additional half term of study will provide our year 9 students with the head start they will need given the high expectation of the new style GCSE’s. Date for the diary: Please note that on Tuesday 25th June, the school will close at 1:20pm for staff training. Food will be available for students at break time and free school meals can be accessed at this time. There will be normal lessons period 1-5 and students are expected in full school uniform.

I was very proud to hear the news this week that Roding Valley has been shortlisted for Best Collaboration between a School & Employer Award in the “Rate My Apprenticeship Awards 2019”. The Hill Group UK has been supporting Roding Valley students for many years by providing our pupils with apprenticeship opportunities. This is testament to the excellent careers advice and work that we offer our students and the external relationships that we have built with employers. As further evidence of this good work, I would also like to congratulate Sophie Ellicock-Williams, who has been offered an apprenticeship with Schroder’s. Thank you to Investment 2020 and Schroder’s for engaging with our school.

Earlier this year, our Drama students participated in the West Essex Inter School Drama Competition as part of the Rudolf Walker Project. Our students had the opportunity to work with their Celebrity mentor Robbie Gee, on the piece written specifically for this project by Year 10 student Lara Bobkov. She then performed this alongside her peers; George Howard, Ethan Lyons, Elliot Crookbaine and Lukrecija Citikaite at Epping Forest College. I am so proud to announce that we have now been invited to perform the piece again on Sunday 30th June, at The Shaw Theatre in London, as part of the national finals. We’re all very excited about this amazing opportunity! I have attached a link above to the footage taken when our students performed their devised piece back in March. Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Tennis Team who put in an outstanding performance battling against Coopers Coburn with some great rallies played in awful weather conditions. It was great to see so many people in attendance at our PTA’s first Bingo Night. Thank you to everyone for their continued support of our PTA, we raised £524 from the event. Thank you to all the parents who have returned their children correctly dressed for the new term. Our uniform is exemplary and I want it to remain so. Therefore, I am disappointed to have noticed that a few of our girls are wearing knee high socks and that skirts are being worn just above the knee. These girls have been spoken to and I expect their uniform to be corrected. Please can I remind parents that all skirts must be below the knee and that girls may only wear short white ankle socks or black tights. Boys must wear leather school shoes, not trainers. Any change to footwear will only be allowed on medical grounds and a doctor’s note would be required. Temporary uniform cards will only be issued for a maximum period of 5 school days to allow parents time to see a doctor or buy new uniform. If you are experiencing any financial hardship, then please do speak to the school for our support. Please can I ask all parents to ensure that their child maintain these high standards of uniform right up until the end of term, this forms part of the Home/ School agreement and is covered by the expectations of our Behaviour Policy. Can I also ask you to check that your son/ daughter has the correct equipment with them, this should include the minimum of a pen, pencil, ruler, calculator, green pen for self-marking and a reading book. The school policy on mobile phones during the school day instructs that phones are to be kept out of sight and in their bags. We do not believe that the use of mobile phones, outside of controlled areas, during the school day is conducive to learning in a safe environment. Therefore, if they are seen using their phones, then they should expect them to be confiscated. If it is the first time then the student can have it back at the end of the school day, on the second or subsequent time then the parent will need to attend to collect the phone. I totally appreciate that students may want to confirm their safe travel arrangements home; they are allowed to use their mobile phones once they are outside the school building at the end of period 6. Please refrain from calling your child during the school day, the school office will always pass on any messages. Students can always attend the school office, if they need to contact you urgently. I thank you all for your support in this matter. I would like to ask parents to remind your children to take their usual route home and to ensure that they travel with friends where possible. Please also remind them to keep all valuable items, mobile phones etc. out of sight. We ask that they use their phones to contact their parents on the school playground before they leave the school site if they feel they need to. Please ask them to go straight home and not to loiter on the streets surrounding school. If it is a genuine emergency, they can call 999. If your child feels that they are at any risk, please remind them that they can return to the school site for help and reassurance. This is a routine safety message that we give to all our students at the start of a new half term. There has been a spate of muggings in the local area and we want to just remind our students how to keep themselves safe. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin; it is a great insight into a great week at Roding Valley High School. Message from Mr Dobson It has been a smooth and focused first week after the half term break but the next seven weeks promise to be outstanding. First of all we have the Year 7 Reports with grades from their recent examinations, The Residential Information Evening is on June 20th at 6:30pm in the Sports Hall and the Year 7 Residential is July 8th to July 10th. There is also a Thorpe Park Reward trip later in July for students with the highest achievement points through the Year. Congratulations to Bianca Nedelcu (7R) from Churchill House, for winning the House Photography for the month of May. The theme of the competition was ‘Colour’. They have worked tirelessly to ensure they have developed their key skills and character education. They can now begin their graduate programme.

Message from Mr Ryan Welcome back after what I hope has been a lovely half term break. On Monday, our Year 9 students started their GCSE courses. It has been a pleasure to walk around the school watching the students fully engaged in their lessons. I have loved the discussions I have heard in Science about the transference of energy. The written work analysing the poem My Last Duchess in one particular lesson was phenomenal. I have even been challenged to a bake off by one of the students in a food and nutrition class. I hope that the students continue with this much enthusiasm and drive. This is also a good opportunity to have these conversations with your children about what they are learning in class and continue the motivation at home. I would like to remind parents of the school uniform policy. Knee length socks are not allowed along with coloured nails and extremes of hair style.
