Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/ Carers
As we reach the end of a remarkably busy Spring Term, I know that pupils and staff are very much looking forward to a well-deserved Easter break. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment during this term. Spring is a time filled with potential, and it has been a thrill for all of us to be able to embrace a number of new and exciting opportunities at Roding Valley. We have collated together some of the highlights of the year so far to share with you as we head into the Easter break.
Our assembly schedule has been action packed, and has included a number of guest speakers over the course of the year. We have had assemblies on Road Safety, Remembrance, the Holocaust, Black History month and Mental Health and Wellbeing. Alongside these assemblies we celebrated a number of events including World Mental Health Day, Safer Internet Day, Pi Day and also took part in several charity events including Wear Red for Racism. As a community we marked Chinese New Year, Diwali and the beginning of Ramadan in mid march. While we do not all observe this, we can each draw inspiration from Ramadan’s universal principles of gratitude, selflessness and service to reinvigorate our own efforts to advance a more just and equitable world. Eid al-Fitr - which means 'festival of the breaking of the fast - is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, and this year falls during the Easter break. We extend warm wishes to all of our Muslim colleagues, families, students and friends who will be celebrating during this time.
We have also held a record number of careers talks so far this year, with speakers from a wide range of industries and companies such as The Times, Higgins Group, BGC Group, OMG Media, Investment 20/20, Media 10 Ltd, Attwaters Jamerson Hill Solicitors, Salesforce, Ernst & Young, Capgemini, Deloitte and Lockton

A huge thank you to all of our guest speakers for giving up their time to speak with our students, and to Mrs Mason - our brilliant Careers Advisor - for her tireless work to ensure that our students have access to the very best careers information, advice and guidance. As part of the careers programme, students have also participated in the following: Careers Fest 2024 - this year over 55 employers attended at New City College. Several Roding Valley students won awards at the event which was deemed a huge success by the Epping Forest Careers Consortium. Year 11 students were also invited to a presentation at Harlow College and we were able to run a business enterprise trip to Capgemini for 30 students in Year 12. In Food Technology we had a presentation from a Royal Navy Chef and earlier in the year we took 30 students in Year 10 via the YES Partnership to World of Work conference. We have also offered work experience placements at The Holly Hospital, Glas, Salesforce, and BGC as well as numerous insight events from a variety of providers including Young Professionals, Pathway CTM, Uptree, Experience for Schools and Springpod. We’d like to say a big thank you to Bancroft's School for the University Fair for Year 12 students, and also to our governors for their various contributions including interview preparation lessons.
Congratulations to the winners of the Epping Forest Youth Council Elections, we had a record number of 17 candidates from RVHS this year! To see who the winners are please see page 12 of this bulletin.
Students return to school on Monday 15 April and are encouraged to arrive early to avoid any issues on public transport. As always please ensure your child is safe when in the local community over the holiday period and that they are informed and aware of how to be responsible and safe when out and about- do seek further support if necessary; there are lots of great online resources and advice and guidance available to support young people such as https://www.themix.org.uk/ or https://www.childline.org.uk
As a school in the heart of the Loughton community, we work closely with local businesses and residents, and I want to share with you some feedback that we have received recently from Sainsbury’s. Increasingly, they are having to deal with examples of anti-social behaviour from young people, often school students, particularly after school. Some of the students involved have been identified as attending Roding Valley. This is extremely disappointing and I know that this small number does not represent the vast majority of students who make the right choices every day. However, as a result of this increase in poor behaviour, Sainsbury's have advised us that they will no longer admit school children into the store from 3pm-4.15pm Monday to Friday - unless accompanied by a parent or carer. If your child regularly visits Sainsbury’s after school, please could you speak with them over Easter so that they are fully aware of these changes ahead of our return to school. This will be reviewed and we will keep you informed of any changes as and when they happen.
Finally, parental support is something that we absolutely value here The chair of our PTA, Mr Wershof, wanted to remind all parents/carers that he would welcome any more members to the PTA with open arms! If you are interested in supporting us (it’s not a huge commitment) then please register your interest by clicking here. You can also email pta@rodingvalley.net for more information.
I hope you and your family have a peaceful and restful Easter break. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
Mr D Charlton

Year 7 News
Message from Ms Hegerty
We have come to the end of our second full term at RVHS and I can’t believe where the time has gone! It is fantastic to see the majority of our Year 7’s settled into secondary school, working hard in lessons and becoming settled in new friendship groups they have met since starting with us at RVHS. I am looking forward to celebrating the academic and Personal Development achievements of our year group in the Year 7 Celebration Assembly which will take place on Monday the 25th March.
It was fantastic to see some of our year group participating in our Fusion event to celebrate the diversity within our school community and to share aspects of their culture through music, dance and poetry. I would also like to wish our Muslim students and families Ramadan Mubarak over the coming weeks and hope they enjoy the holiest month of the Islamic calendar. I hope you have a healthy and holy fast and plenty of opportunities to celebrate with your loved ones.
Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and that they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We still are limited with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to purchase food in Zone 3 at these times).
There has been some concerning behaviour during lunchtimes on our Astro in Zone 3 - students have been reminded that use of the Astro is a privilege and that if they are to use it they must do so following RVHS behaviour expectations (following staff instructions, wearing the correct footwear, not slide tackling one another and refraining from pushing and shoving).
Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances.
I would like to the congratulate the following students – well done and thank you for being such great examples for your peers!

Message from Miss Reed
We have made it to the end of another half term and hopefully the weather will begin to improve for the Easter Break.
It has been a busy term which started off with Y8 sitting their exams. Lots of students went
This week, we will be holding our Easter Celebration Assembly where we will celebrate and hand out certificates to students for their progress and attitude in all subject areas as well as our special Year Progress Leader and Headteachers award. This is always a really positive end to the term and students should be proud of all their hard work.
I would like to congratulate the Y8 Netball team who won the WESSA Netball Festival this week beating West Hatch, Davenant and Debden Park. This is a great end to the netball season and we look forward to the summer sports approaching in the new term. Miss Reed's player of the tournament was Evie J.
Lastly, I would like to wish you all a lovely Easter break and look forward to seeing everyone back for the Summer Term on Monday 15th April.

Year 9 News
Message from Mr Ryan
It is hard to believe that we have made it through another term at RVHS. This term has been an important one as the students have made their option choices. I have been incredibly impressed with the maturity shown by the year group and conversations that I have had with them about their futures has been very interesting. Students will start their GCSE options after May half term. It is really important that they understand that until then, they will have to continue working as hard as they have in all of their subjects.
There seems to have been a shift in behaviour in the year group in a positive way and the students should be praised for this. I hope this continues as it is so much better to go into lessons and see students working so well.
I would like to congratulate all those students who have been nominated for awards in the up-coming awards assembly taking place this week. There are so many certificates to hand out. I need to congratulate Keyaan H and Alexander B for being our Bedrock champions over the past fortnight.
Finally, I would like to say that I was so impressed with the students who participated in the Fusion event last Friday. It was lovely to see so many students involved and to celebrate the different cultures in the school.
As always, any concerns/issues please contact your child’s Academic Mentor in the first instance.
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website
It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Message from Mrs Wills
We are coming towards the end of a short but busy half term. Students are currently sitting assessments in their lessons in order to provide data for their next progress report, which will be sent out very soon. This will inform conversations for the parents evening which is straight after Easter on the 18th April. This will be face to face in school between 4.00pm-7.00pm and information on how to book appointments via Edulink will be sent to you.
I do hope that this is a restful Easter break for you all and you are able to enjoy some quality family time with hopefully less rain. Can I remind you that this is a good opportunity for you and your child to arrange the Take Your Child to Work Day, a reminder of this is in the letter here.
I am also really pleased to say that since launching our drive on punctuality I have seen a massive improvement in Year 10. I said that we would be running a competition based on this and in the last 2 weeks the majority students were on time to all their lessons which is brilliant. The following students were chosen at random to receive a Queue Jumper pass to the baguette bar as a reward for their efforts. We will keep this up over the next half term: - Aymen L, Orhiana K, Aaliyan A, Tommy H and Daniel S

Year 11 News
Message from Miss Pinches
We have finally made it to the end of a very busy term for Year 11 and a well-deserved (and hopefully productive) holiday break! I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the timeline for Year 11:
I wanted to share the timeline with parents for our key Year 11 events:
• Year 11 GCSE first official exam- Wednesday 9th May 2024
• Year 11 Last day in school- Wednesday 15th May 2024
• Year 11 Leavers Assembly and Prom - Tuesday 25th June 2024
• Year 11 Transition to 6th form day- Tuesday 2nd July 2024
Mock Results Day: this was a big afternoon for Year 11! Receiving those mock results envelopes is a chance for celebration, or reflection for our students. During our assembly on Wednesday, Ms Larkin and myself spoke about the importance of reflecting on how students prepared for the February PPE and building on their revision “foundation”. I know some students were disappointed in their exam results, but the key message of “you still have time” is vital!
GCSE Revision Packs: during our results assembly, every student was provided with revision materials for their subjects. These have been put together by the department leads to ensure all students have access to materials in order to prepare for the summer exams. If they need any further support with resources, please ensure students are reading out to their subject leads before the Easter break.
In happy news, I wanted to celebrate our students who have won FREE Prom tickets during our “Passport to Prom” initiative. These students have worked so hard over this term and have earned a staggering amount of points to receive these tickets. Keep it up!

Our punctuality as a cohort has improved over the last few weeks (YAY!) I did however want to remind parents that if a student is late to school 3 times in the week the next step is the Reflection Room. With such little time left, we all want to avoid this! Our gates are now open from 8am for those students who are coming into Loughton on the earlier train or bus. I would like to remind parents that if there are any issues on the morning commute, please email office@rodingvalley.net to alert us.
As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Happy Holidays!
Message from Mrs Curling 6th Form News
Fusion
We were proud that our sixth formers took the lead in organising our school’s Fusion event last Friday evening. Maira, one of our year 12s, oversaw the event and described it as follows:
‘Fusion is a celebration of the diversity within Roding Valley. The show celebrated the different cultures such as Balkan, Turkish, Pakistani, Irish, Indian, South African and many more. From South African poems, to Bollywood dancing, the show fostered inclusivity with an emphasis on being proud of your own heritage, and sharing this with friends of different backgrounds.’
Students and staff really enjoyed the event. Well done to everyone involved.
Young Citizens Award
Congratulations to Sydnae Rose S for winning the Epping Forest Young Citizens Award 2024. We’re very proud of you!
Year 13 - PPE results day
Well done to our hard-working year 13 students, who have now completed their second set of PPEs. We will be holding a results day for them to get the feeling of opening the envelope on Wednesday 17th April. Students will be asked to reflect on whether they’re pleased with how they’ve done, whether they worked hard in the lead up to these exams and whether or not this would get them to their desired post-18 destination.
Chelsea
Our Chelsea squad, made up of both year 12 and 13 students, have made it through to the final of the Essex Cup. Dates will be shared as soon as the details have been confirmed, it would be wonderful to have many of you come along to support. Well done team!

Bancrofts University and Apprenticeship Fair
On Wednesday 27th March, our year 12s will be going to Bancrofts for the University and Apprenticeship Fair. Attendance is compulsory. Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
