Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers

It’s great to be back at school after a wonderful Easter break- we really hope you managed to spend time with your loved ones and have a well-deserved break. We have hit the ground running and we are ready to tackle a really important term.

You will be aware that this term contains those very important public examinations for our Year 11 and 13 cohort (Some Year 12 students also have public exams!). Ms Larkin will be writing to all parents of Year 11 students on Monday with some final arrangements, including a link to a very extensive in-school revision programme led by my team between Tuesday 28th - Friday 31st May. Ms Curling will also be doing the same for Year 13.

4th 1165

This term will also, of course, be exciting for our Year 9 cohort. After the May half term, Year 9 will be moving into their GCSE option subjects, whereby they will get a ‘flying start’ with their GCSE core content. It has been great to see how excited our Year 9 students have been to embark on the next stage of their GCSE journey.

5th 995pts

Over the past couple of weeks, I have also had the pleasure of witnessing some excellent enrichment opportunities experienced by our students. Last Wednesday, a group of Year 10 students bravely (and very confidently!) presented their ‘Jack Petchey’ Speak out speeches to Year 7 during their assembly. Each speech was carefully crafted and the topics ranged from ‘how running can improve your mental health’ to ‘encouraging women to remain in sport’. Well done to Mia, Melissa, Isabelle, Zoe, Polinia and Marilyn. A special well done to Mia, who will be representing our school in the regional final on Wednesday! Watch this space for updates on how she gets on.

Year 7 also had a fantastic experience on Tuesday of this week. Mrs Collins, teacher of English, organised a ‘Drop Down Day’ to celebrate the birth of Shakespeare! Students took part in workshops and sessions to learn all about his life and work. It was great to see how engaged Year 7 were with such an important part of the English curriculum.

A number of our Year 9’s also attended a motivational conference on Tuesday, led by Mrs Mason. They attended the conference at the Marriott Hotel in Waltham Abbey and had a chance to be inspired by what their futures could hold. It was also wonderful to hear such good feedback from the conference leaders about the behaviour and engagement of our students - once again showing members of our wider community our values of aspiration, respect and endeavour.

I have also been working very closely with our local community, in recent weeks meeting with business owners, the British Transport Police, school leaders and residents. We all know the importance of having a thriving and successful school at the heart of our community, and the benefits it can bring. During these meetings we were all in full agreement that the safety of everyone in this community is paramount. Over the next few weeks and months I will share details of partnerships that we have set up with this in mind, and will also share information from our partners about some of the steps that they are taking to ensure the local area, including Roding Valley High School, are the very best that they can be. If you have any ideas, suggestions or links to organisations which you feel may be beneficial, then please get in touch with us as we would very much like to explore these opportunities.

We are really pleased with the response of our student body to the updates to our punctuality systems, both in terms of punctuality to school in the morning and punctuality to lessons We have seen significant improvements in both and we thank families for their support with these efforts because we know that making the most of lesson time is absolutely paramount for ensuring the best outcomes.

We have also seen some significant improvements in the presentation of our pupils and I would like to take this opportunity to remind families about our high expectations around uniform at Roding Valley. We insist that all pupils are wearing the full uniform, as outlined on our website and that in addition, all shirts are tucked in, skirts are worn at the correct length and ties and blazers are worn throughout the school day, including on arrival at school in the morning and when leaving in the afternoon.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year 7 News

Message from Ms Hegerty

Year 7 have made a flying start to their final term this academic year with nearly all students in Year 7 having perfect uniform and the majority of students having improved punctuality to lessons. Let’s keep going by raising these standards and set an example for the rest of our school!

On the 23rd April, Year 7 celebrated Shakespeare’s life and works on his birth and death date. Our fantastic English Department delivered a day's worth of engaging workshops centred around Shakespeare's literature, life and legacy followed with an awards assembly. It was a fantastic opportunity to allow student’s creativity to flow, explore different parts of Shakespeare’s work and collaborate with their peers. A huge thank you to Ms Collins and the English Department for organising such a successful and valuable day!

Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and that they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We are still limited with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to purchase food in Zone 3 at these times).

Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. In addition to this, can I remind parents and careers that toilet cards will only be given when medical evidence is provided to your son or daughter's Year Progress Leader.

Year 7 Parents Evening - Thursday 2nd May 3:30pm – 7:00pm

Please can I remind parents and carers that in person appointments are a maximum of five minutes long. You can find a copy of the recent letter regarding our Year 7 Parents Evening here. If you have been unable to book an appointment with a specific teacher, please contact them directly via email and they will respond to you within 48 hours. You can find our staff contact details here.

We understand that this is the first face to face contact parents and carers will have had with their children's teachers and we endeavour to provide feedback to all parents and carers who wish to receive it.

Year 8 News Message from Miss Reed

A warm welcome back to Year 8 and the summer term although the weather is not reflecting this at present. It is hard to believe that this is the final term of Year 8 and students will be heading into Year 9 later in the year!

Students all attended an assembly on the first day back lead by Mr Smith the Deputy Headteacher with a reminder of our school policies with regards to lateness, uniform and behaviour. A reminder that we have high expectations of our uniform and students should be in leather school shoes, be wearing school skirts below the knee and ties work with their top button done up.

Last week, our boxing intervention started for selected students which is being run by the local Denis and Dyer Boxing Academy. The aim of this is for students to learn a new skill alongside reducing stress and anxiety as well as releasing a healthy dose of serotonin.

Calling all Tennis Players - Y7 - 10

I am looking for any tennis players that play outside of school in Y7 - Y10. The PE department have tennis matches coming up and are looking for any students who are interested in competing. Please see Miss Reed or Mr Jones if you are interested in taking part.

Extra-Curricular:

The PE Summer extra-curricular timetable is now up and running. It would be great to see lots of Year 8's attending some sports clubs this term such as Athletics, rounders and cricket. This can be found on our school website here, social media or students can also see the timetable in the PE department.

As always, please get in touch with any queries to your son/daughters’ academic mentor or myself.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend – Miss Reed

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 9 News

Message from Mr Ryan

It has been another really busy start to the term and we're only two weeks in. I would like to thank you all for your support with our uniform drive. I think year 9 are the smartest year group and I really do think that is down to your support with this. If there is any confusion over what constitutes a trainer, then I am happy to clarify. We also have spare, new shoes in school in a variety of sizes.

I hope you are aware that students received their reports. If you have any concerns over this, please let me know and if you are concerned about a particular subject you are more than welcome to contact them directly, via email. You can find our staff contact details here.

The options process is still underway as we try to allocate the best subjects possible for each student based on their choices and what is available.

I would like to thank the following students for assisting during year 10 Parents' Evening. Oliver C, Samanta D, Max F, Luana C, Suden P, Emmi C, Lily B, Freya T, Kwaku K, Freddie E, Tom B, Sindi F and Asya K. They really were exceptional and I couldn't have asked for a better team.

On Wednesday Mrs Mason, Careers Advisor, took 30 year 9 students to the Year 9 Motivation Conference at the Marriott Hotel, the students all behaved incredibly well and were a credit to the school.

Congratulations to Matthew S for doing so well in his latest squash tournament at the Silver National event in Ipswich.

BEDROCK Top Students

I would also like to congratulate Alexander B for being the Bedrock Champion for the last three weeks! This week he scored 131, Olivia N came second with 117. Well done both of you!

To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net

We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.

Year 10 News

Message from Ms Wills

I trust that you all had a good and restful break over Easter and that you were able to spend time with your family and friends.

It was great to see so many of you at the Year 10 parents evening last week and I know that there were lots of productive and purposeful conversations as we now turn

our focus to this cohort and prepare for them to be successful in their GCSE’s and progression post 16.

Students will be completing PPE exams in the middle of June, which will then give a good indication as to how they have progressed in the first year of their courses and what needs to be done to improve to raise their grades further. More details will be sent out nearer the time.

As mentioned before we are also busy with work on careers. Students have begun writing their CV’s, which will hopefully be something they can use in the near future when they are considering part time work. A gentle reminder to be finalising arrangements for the Take your Child to Work day. Details can be found in this letter here. Please can the form be filled in with details as soon as possible.

As before we continue to drive on attendance, punctuality and uniform. Please can you ensure that your child is in full uniform, including no trainers.

We also were incredibly impressed with the students who took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge All students who took part were outstanding in their presentation skills and it was an incredibly hard decision to choose a winner. We wish Mia W all the best in the regional final next Wednesday. Please see further on in this bulletin to read the full write up on this event.

And finally, a big congratulations to the Year 10 football team for making it to the regional finals this Thursday. We look forward to what should be an exciting game!

Congratulations to the following students on their 100% punctuality the first two weeks back.

Year 11 News Message from Miss Pinches

Welcome back to the final half-term for Year 11! What a crazy thought! It’s a very busy time for Year 11 so I wanted to take this opportunity to make sure everyone is aware of the focus for the weeks coming up.

I wanted to remind parents of the timeline of events for Year 11:

• Year 11 GCSE first official exam - Wednesday 9th May 2024

• Year 11 Last day in school - Wednesday 15th May 2024

• Year 11 Leavers Assembly and Prom - Tuesday 25th June 2024

• Year 11 Transition to 6th form day - Tuesday 2nd July 2024

In the run up to GCSE examinations, we continue to expect excellent behaviour and focus from our year 11 students. It is more important than ever that students get the basics right and therefore we continue to expect all of our pupils to be in full school uniform, including correct shoes, at all times and making the most of all their lesson time. This means arriving on time and remaining focussed throughout all of their lessons so that teachers can support every learner in their class. Any students causing disruption to lessons will be removed to ensure the teaching and learning is not compromised.

Students and parents will receive communication next week regarding the plans for the GCSE period. I would first like to make it crystal clear with regards to punctuality during exams. Students need to ensure that they are in school with plenty of time to line up and make their way calmly into the school hall. Students who arrive late run the risk of not being able to sit the exam - something none of us want!

With only a few weeks left, please make sure your child is engaging with all the intervention sessions and support clinics on offer across the faculties. Please be reaching out to teaching staff if you need to confirm what is on offer and when.

I would also like to remind parents of our Academic mentor + intervention team who are the first port of call for any questions!

Message from Mrs Curling 6th Form News

Alongside the rest of the school, the sixth form wants to ensure standards are high at all times. To this end, we have been communicating our expectations with the students in assemblies and through display in Brook Library. Please support us to ensure that all students follow our rules, especially around punctuality and business dress.

In an outstanding sixth form:

• We arrive on time to school and to lessons every time (3 lates to school= no lunch and period 6 privilege for following week, 3 lates to lesson = 40 minutes after school)

• We attend all detentions - Late = 15 minutes at lunchtime on the same day, FTA 15 minutes late = 40 minutes after school next day (no more 30 minute detention).

• We wear our uniform with pride - business attire (blazers, lanyard, shoes etc)

• We utilise all opportunities to progress and thrive (Silent study area, 5th hour, outside space for group study, proactive study in RA10)

• At break we are mindful of others who choose to study in Supervise Study

• We act as role models for the rest of the school - no phones or earpods etc.

Work Experience Opportunities

Arm Holdings PLC - British semiconductor and software design company based in Cambridge.

"The Insight Day at ARM was a valuable experience, offering a glimpse into the world of technology through engaging with ARM's brilliant minds. From coding with microbit to discussions with software engineers, the day highlighted ARM's innovation and teamwork. Set in the beautiful Cambridge, the event was both inspiring and adventurous, leaving a lasting impact on my tech aspirations. Special thanks to Uptree and Mrs. Mason for this enriching opportunity." - Alfrid

6th Form News

Emmanuel Trip, Cambridge University – 22nd April 2024

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the Cambridge trip as it was really insightful into the different opportunities available within the university and helped to demystify the whole process of applying. The students gave us some really helpful tips and suggestions to prepare ourselves for the interviews and we did an academic session to show how the university assesses our ability to infer from a text and then articulate our ideas. I would highly recommend the trip to anyone looking at Oxbridge! - Amber

Artist of the Month for March goes to Skye S-H 13VPankhurst

Skye was nominated by her A Level Art teacher, Mr Baidoo for her exceptional oil painting.

Her prize and certificate will be presented to her during her Art lesson with Mr Baidoo.

Twenty students, from Years 8 to 12, travelled to Queens Theatre Hornchurch on Thursday 18th April, to perform their production of Shout, by Alexis Zegerman. Shout is a brand-new play and concerns the story of Dana, a selective mute, who is struggling with all the usual hurdles of being a student, applying to university and navigating through relationships, all while being unable to speak. Our cast of nineteen actors, plus one technician, has been working on this play since the autumn term, and this day at a real, professional theatre, performing to the paying public, was the culmination of all their hard work. The students had a great day and, suffice to say, turned in their best performance yet, filling that big theatre space with their voices and personalities. Everyone was awesome, but special mentions to Martyn and Abi in Y10, who had the two central roles, Bella in Y12 who had often stepped in as my assistant director, Even in Y9 who made our placards and Tony in Y11, who stepped in at the last minute to support me with sound and light, and who got to do some excellent networking with the production team at the theatre. Shout will be performed again at school in a couple of weeks, so #TeamDrama will be in touch to invite you all to that.

In this photo left to right: Tony, Isabelle, Abi & Martyn

On Wednesday 17th April a group of year 10 students took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge to win a place for the regional final on 1st May 2024.

This challenge prepares students for public speaking and students chose a range of topics to speak about. These included, sport, and personal impact of events in their lives. A panel of judges had a strict criteria to adhere to and Mia W won this round with her speech on ‘All’s not lost’. She will now represent RVHS in May with a chance of getting to the finals in July! We wish Mia all the best!

Well done to Zoe H, Polina M, Marilyn R, Melisa T and Isabelle D for taking part and delivering such amazing speeches.

Well done to the Year 7 football team who Who won their final league game of the season last week 3-1. This means they finish 2nd in the league which is a great achievement! Goals from Marley P x 1 and Harry T x 2

Chelsea FC Visit

Some of our 6th form students had the opportunity to be involved with a training session and meet a selection of the Chelsea 1st team squad. It was a great experience for them and created memories to last a lifetime

On Wednesday 30 Year 9 students were invited to attend a Motivational Conference at the Waltham Abbey Marriott. Students participated in a variety of skills building exercises and met with many different employers. We have been participating in this event for the past 9 years with the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) Partnership. Their aim is to motivate the students into thinking about themselves, their aspirations and what they can achieve, it is always a very successful day.

British Science Week 2024 - TIME

We in the Science department want to say to all Year 7 and Year 8 students who participated in the competition thank you. We had lots of participation Also, students in Year 9 had the opportunity to get involved in time-themed activities and Year 10 had time to learn about the Secrets of Zookeeping. We cannot wait to participate again in British Science Week 2025. Remember - CREST club (Mondays) and STEM club (Tuesdays) are great opportunities to continue your interest and involvement in Science.

Congratulations to the following students for their fantastic work in Literacy and during Drop Everything and Write (DEAW)

Ms A Parsley (aparsley@rodingvalley.net)

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2
