Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers

On Saturday 30th September we will be opening our door to prospective parents and students at the amazing school that I already feel so proud of. Year 6 Open Morning is an opportunity for us to show off our wonderful school, staff and students to a new group of people and let them see for themselves the wonderful community we have built. In the last bulletin I mentioned how incredibly proud we are of the start our students have made this year and many of them have been invited to support us during Open Morning. Next week we will also be offering Year 6 Open Morning tours from MondayThursday 9.00am-10.00am.

It will be unusual for our prospective parents and students to see a school with such significant building work taking place. You may have seen the progress for yourselves in recent days with phase 1 well on its way to completion on 4th October. We hope to have this building fully operational w/c 9th October which means we will be able to accommodate another year group back into school. For a reminder of the current hybrid home learning and onsite rota please click here

It was great to welcome the parents and carers of Year 11 to Parents Evening this week. We had an excellent turnout and I’m sure that there were plenty of meaningful academic conversations that took place. It was also a great chance for those parents to have a look at the new buildings!

Thank you to the vast majority of students who have attended school in their full uniform. These students look exemplary and are taking great pride in wearing our uniform with the Roding Valley badge. It is encouraging to receive messages from our local community commenting on how well dressed and professional our students look, and how well they are representing us in the local area. I shared my thoughts on the importance of uniform a few weeks ago and have noticed a transformation across the school since then. If you are having difficulty in replacing any part of the uniform, please get in touch with your Year Progress Leader who will be able to facilitate replacement items for your child.

Earlier this week I wrote a joint letter with our Attendance Officer - Ms Parsley - about the importance of punctuality. Please can I remind you that we expect all students on site by 8.25am for a prompt 8.30am start to period 1. Anyone who arrives from 8.30am onwards will be marked as late to school. I would once again request your support in making punctuality a priority, as we know that this greatly contributes to your child’s overall experience at school and minimises disruption to learning.

Please take a look at our wonderful Enrichment Programme and discuss with your child which opportunity they would like to take part in- it’s a fantastic way to meet new friends, speak with different members of staff and learn new and exciting skills. If you have any questions about our enrichment offer then please contact Ms Reed hreed@rodingvalley.net . Please click on the following link to see our Extra Curricular Activities and Clubs.

Finally, please remember, Roding Valley High School operates a media service to provide a regular flow of news updates from the school.

The media service is provided by Everything Local News, which is part of the Everything Epping Forest local news and information service.

Media updates are sent to the local / regional media (newspapers, community magazines, television and radio outlets) and are also featured on Everything Epping Forest and Everything Local News social media feeds.

Message from Ms Hegerty

Year 7 have continued to show resilience in their second two weeks at RVHS - well done!

Year 7 have been learning online for the first time at RVHS which has presented some challenges but they have given their best efforts to participate responsibly and make the most of their learning outside of the school buildings. I have had lots of questions regarding logins and Google Classroom and I want to take this opportunity to remind parents that we have a brilliant Year 7 team of Academic Mentors who are your first port of call if you have any questions or concerns.

I would also like to congratulate the following students who received the largest amount of ARE points last week – well done and thank you for being such great examples for your peers!

Year 9 News Message from Mr Ryan

It has been lovely having the year group back on site and with a bit of luck we will be back in school full time fairly soon. I know that it isn't ideal having to do online learning but it is good to hear such positive comments about the year group and their behaviour online.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that all students should receive the invites to their lessons by 8.00am. Lessons should last around 50 minutes and there will be time given to allow members of staff to finish their live lessons, get to a space and log on to their online lessons. If there are any issues with logging on to lessons, please email the class teacher. Remember your child will not be allowed into the lesson if they are using a different email to their school gmail account.

On Tuesday we had the Year 9 Information Evening, if you missed the event you will be able to see the recording of this here.

Year 10 News

Message from Mrs Wills

It has been lovely to see all of Year 10 back in face to face learning and engaging really well in their lessons. I hope that many of you have been able to access the Information Evening video. If not then please take time to watch as it gives some very helpful information and links as to what the expect this year and also how to best support your child. Yr 10 information evening 2023

One of things mentioned was the need for students to be in school on time and in every lesson, including Period 1. This is vitally important during the GCSE course in order to access content. Please be reminded that the gates open at 8:20am and Period 1 begins at 8:30am Anything after this is classed as late and results in a 15 minute detention that lunchtime. Failure to attend will lead to an escalation of sanction.

Year 11 News Message from Miss Pinches

It has been a very busy few weeks for Year 11! We are working hard towards our first round of PPE’s, after October half term, so please read the below carefully so we are all on the same page.

For those parents who were unable to attend last week, please find the link to Year 11 Information Evening here. This session is full of key information from our Senior staff about the upcoming year and support in place for Year 11 students.

It was wonderful to see so many parents on site for our Parents evening yesterday. Given the crucial nature of the upcoming school year, it is essential that you speak with your child's subject teachers about their progress and support on offer. If you were unable to attend/speak to staff yesterday, please contact them directly to arrange a call in the upcoming week.

Our GCSE microsite, linked here, is active and updated with all the resources your child needs to prepare for their PPE’s. It is a one-stop shop for everything they require to plan their study timetable, resources for revision and our revision techniques.

I would like to remind you of our Academic Mentor team for Year 11. Any questions you may have should be directed to them in the first instance.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Sixth Form Bulletin No.4 w/c 25/09/23

What a brilliant start to the year with our first house week! It was great to have our in person house assemblies happening again in over a year! We reflected on the past academic year and congratulated our house cup winners, Churchill!

The table has been reset and we kicked it off with our school fundraiser at the end of last year! We managed to raise over £1500 as a school which will be donated to the dedicated house charities as well as a part going to our PTA. It is a staggering amount of money and hopefully with our next fundraiser we can beat this target!

You can see the table below, there is only 81 points between the top and the bottom, so anything is possible at the moment!

We were very lucky to have a section in our assembly which was led by our deputy head girl, Ruby Coyte as well as our house captains focusing on our theme of the week which was International Day of Peace. Was a nice opportunity to get the sixth-form captains involved and they very eloquently spoke about peace and tied it in nicely with our school, helping students relate to it more.

There was a range of different activities taking place throughout the course of the week including; Personal Development, a maths quiz and the great debate! Congratulations to all of the houses for getting involved with those and a huge shout out to Pankhurst for picking up 150 points in the maths quiz, pushing you up to that 3rd place on the podium!

It has been a brilliant house week and we are looking forward to the next one which is going to be bigger and better! There is a recruitment process taking place in the next couple of weeks which is going to create opportunities for students across all year groups. We are looking for 2 students in each house, per year, to represent their house as a house leader. If you think this is something for you then please complete the google form which has been sent to your school email. The deadline for this to be returned is Friday 14th of October

Alternatively, you can scan the QR code with your phone which will bring up the form for you to complete. It is important that you express why you think you would be suitable and what it is you can bring to the team! Do not forget to mention any previous experience you do have at Roding Valley or previous schools. I look forward to reading your applications and good luck!

On our trip to the Royal Institute, we attended some very interesting lectures detailing the advantages and disadvantages of AI, some of which included topics like the ethics of AI, AI and the law, regulating AI and how AI can be applied in our lives (eg. every day, medicine etc.) I enjoyed it very much as I learned a lot about AI as I had little prior knowledge about it at all and I got to discuss and develop my ideas with my peers - Rosie Powe

During the Royal Institute trip, we attended lectures from experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence, providing different perspectives including ethics and law around AI. Then we participated in discussions surrounding these topics and I enjoyed listening to experts and students alike who were offering their unique points of view. Overall, I enjoyed it and feel more versed about the technology of AI - Santiago Levy

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/  14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
