I am delighted to be able to welcome back all 7 year groups on our school site for the first time this academic year. Our new buildings are now fully equipped and operational and both students and staff are familiarising themselves with them. I am grateful for all the continued support for this great school that we have received over the past 9 weeks since we were first made aware of the issue.

Year 11 have now started their Pre-Public Exams (PPEs), which is a vital tool in preparing them for their summer exams. Year 13 will be sitting their PPEs w/c 20 th November. For further details of the arrangements for the Year 11 PPEs, please refer to the letter here. We wish both year groups well in their exams and look forward to sharing the results once they are completed. School performance data for the Summer 2023 GCSE has now been published on the government website for 2022/23. On Wednesday 29th November 2023 we will be hosting our Sixth Form Open Evening from 4.00pm until 7.00pm. We welcome all year 11 parents and students to attend to hear about our Level 3 provision. Talks will be held at 5.30pm and 6.45pm in the main hall and we ask that parents book to attend using this form. There will also be the opportunity to speak to our sixth form teachers and see our facilities in the Brook Building. Please note if you are attending the 6.45pm talk, there will not be time to speak to staff afterwards so please make sure you leave time to do this beforehand. We look forward to welcoming you. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that we expect every student to attend every day on time. Students should be on the school site by 8.25am to be ready to go to period 1 at 8.30am when the bell sounds. We encourage every student to achieve 100% attendance. We know that there is a clear correlation between attendance to school and attainment at GCSE. As an example, a student with 96% attendance would mean a whole 8 days of absence, which in turn is 60 hours of lost learning time which can never be replaced. for learning and is dressed in accordance with our Uniform policy, which is available on our website. If you have any concerns or issues regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact your child's Year Progress Leader, who will be more than happy to help with any issues.

For further advice and guidance please refer to the Attendance page on our website here, or contact your child’s Academic Mentor or Year Progress Leader. Please also ensure that your child has all of the appropriate equipment to be ready for learning and is dressed in accordance with our Uniform Policy, which is available on our website. If you have any concerns or issues regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact your child's Year Progress Leader, who will be more than happy to help with any issues. Finally, a plea from our PTA. The RVHS PTA is in urgent need of support from our parents and carers. The current Chair, Treasurer and Secretary took over during the summer term as a temporary measure, and they now wish to stand down. Without your support the PTA will have to close and that will lose valuable financial support for the students in our school. This would be a great shame in difficult time and the loss of those valuable extras is has proved over the years. Please help us help the students! The PTA meet once or twice every half term and plan events to raise funds. If you would like to join us or find out any further information please contact pwershof@rodingvalley.net Kind regards

Mr Charlton Headteacher

I hope you all had a great half term break and are ready to get stuck into RVHS life in the run-down to Christmas! Students can do this by getting involved in one of our numerous extra-curricular clubs (ranging from netball to drama!) which can be found here on our website, going to homework club afterschool, assisting with the school's production of Mary Poppins or being a Teaching and Learning Ambassador in lessons. Please note that Year 7 reports regarding Attitude to Learning will be sent to parents and carers in the coming weeks. There will be a letter following from myself and Mr Vermaak (Assistant Headteacher for Raising Standards and Student Progress) which explains how the grading for the reports work. 7 Argon 7 Beryllium 7 Carbon 7 Fluorine 7 Hydrogen 7 Lithium 7 Magnesium 7 Neon 7 Oxygen 7 Platinum

Year 8 News Message from Miss Reed I hope Year 8 students enjoyed a wonderful half term break and are back feeling refreshed for what can sometimes seem quite a long term leading up to the Christmas Break. This term we have introduced a new detention system which involves detentions occurring at the end of each day. Parents Evening I would like to remind parents that this half term is Parents Evening being held on Thursday 16th November which will be face to face. Parents will soon be receiving a letter regarding this and how to make appointments. Appointments will continue to be made on Edulink. A reminder that uniform continues to be a high priority; especially footwear. Students should be wearing the correct shoes or bring a note if they are unable to wear shoes for any reason. Bedrock We continue to encourage our students to be completing 20 minutes of Bedrock a week which is part of our Literacy strategy. Students also complete this weekly in their period 1 lesson.

I would like to congratulate the following students who have received the most ARE points over the past 2 weeks:  Zakaria El-Hajji  Lillie-Ann Elci  Cameron Marchant 8 Argon 8 Beryllium 8 Carbon 8 Fluorine 8 Hydrogen 8 Lithium 8 Magnesium 8 Neon 8 Oxygen

Year 9 News Message from Mr Ryan Welcome back after what I hope has been a lovely half term break. I hope that everyone is relaxed and refreshed and ready for a rather long half term. As the weather has changed we would recommend that students have a sensible coat. They will need to be waterproof and warm. I would also like to mention that over half term we have purchased new shoes and bags for those students who have forgotten to bring theirs into school. It is also an expectation that on PE days, students come in, in their normal uniform (This includes shoes) and change for PE. During lunchtimes we are now offering year 9 students the opportunity to spend their lunch times on the second astro, the usual behaviour requirements are expected. Before we broke up for half term the year group were given a brilliant experience called Prison Me No Way. I know that the year group found it really informative and educational. The aim of the workshop was to make sure that the year group is aware of the risks that they could face and how to avoid making mistakes that could have a negative impact on their life. This was quite a powerful day and I hope triggered some discussion. This half term we will be having another drive on home learning, where we will focus on SPARx maths and Bedrock. Each student should be completing a minimum of 40 minutes a week of Bedrock. This really will help them with their level two and three vocabulary. SPARx maths is also a tool used for maths home learning. If the work at home is not completed then they may find it difficult to complete their classwork and vice versa. We have a homework club which runs after school in IT5 from 15.00 - 16.00 this is organised by our fantastic SEN department. There are also home learning catch up sessions which are run by most subjects and are available to all. This half term we will also be opening the sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, so please keep your eyes peeled for more information to follow.

I would like to congratulate the following student for their exceptional Bedrock scores over the last two weeks!  Andreii Buburuzan  Alexander Belnikof

Can you please urge your sons/daughters to remember to collect their food from T1 at the end of the day of their Food & Nutrition lessons. Unfortunately, we do not have the refrigerated storage capacity to store food left at the end of the day. Many thanks, Food & Nutrition Department

6 Form News Message from Mrs Curling Welcome back to autumn 2. We have asked some of our sixth formers to share some of their news with you from their half term: Insights One of our students, Devan, attended a Law Employer event with the Young Professionals. Whilst there he was able to network with employers and he had this to say about the event: Every week I have been looking over the sixth form bulletin signing up for the law talks run by Young Professionals. I signed up for the in person Law event during half term where over 40 Law firms were hosted at the Queen Elizabeth 11 centre. The Law event was very informative and I gathered lots of useful information about apprenticeships! At the end of the event there was a competition, if you sent a video regarding who you are and what you had learnt at the event (has to be max 20 seconds) you could become a city century ambassador, the company that partners with Young Professionals for the Law event, the prize was a lunch with a law company who attended such as, Bird and Bird, Clyde and Co and Allen and Overy. I was 1 of the 2 people who won in that morning session! Around 1000 students attended the event who also had the opportunity to enter in this competition. This is something I can look forward to in the future and adds to my CV. None of this would have been possible without the sixth form bulletin! - Devan Bloomberg I had a fantastic experience at the Bloomberg HQ in London on October 27th. I was invited when I signed up on a website through my school’s weekly bulletin to an apprenticeship event. It was a great opportunity to explore the office, connect with apprentice recruiters, and meet former apprentices who shared their valuable insights into the financial world. It was an enlightening thought experience, and I gained a deeper understanding of the financial industry. I also participated in a virtual apprenticeship event with CapGemini, where I gained valuable insights into the application process and received useful tips and tricks. Additionally, I had the opportunity to learn more about the future of AI, which was informative - Alfrid

6 Form News Pathway Property Needs I attended the Pathway Property Needs taster day. This I found on the Sixth Form weekly bulletin. In this I got a better understanding of the world of real estate from great companies like Savills and CBRE. I heard from some of the apprentices who shared their experience of working within real estate. After it helped me widen my knowledge and has helped in making a decision on what route I would like to go down - Teddy Sixth Form Open Evening for year 11 students We will be hosting our sixth form open evening on Wednesday 29th November. We hope that many of our year 12 and 13 students will sign up to help out at this event. We encourage all year 11 students to attend and ask questions to find out more about our Outstanding sixth form. UCAS We had 14 students apply to UCAS in time for the early entry deadline (Medicine, Dentistry, Oxbridge). House week is slowly approaching and the recruitment phase is slowly coming to an end! We held our deputy house captain interviews yesterday and the whole school house leaders will soon be announced! With the return of all students on site we will see the return of many house competitions across the school! The creative arts faculty has kicked this off with a drama and photography competition, details of this are below… Drama The drama house competition is to take any poster from a professional theatre production. Reimagine that poster with you in it! Here is a brilliant example of Mr Wilson who recreated a post of the Frankenstein production. All submissions can be emailed to rwilson@rodingvalley.net Good Luck!

Photography We then have a brilliant photography competition where students can unleash their creativity and take some portraits! Please email Miss Kalair with your photographs! skalair@rodingvalley.net

Well done to Edie Bradley in Rendell who won the artist of the month for September with her amazing drawing of a peacock scoring your house an extra 50 points and taking Rendell to that top spot.

We also celebrate Hope Henry who won the artist of the month for October with a brilliant drawing of a girl on the bus! This is also taking an extra 50 points for Pankhurst House so well done to Hope!

With house week slowly approaching the current house captains have been working hard to get their ideas to paper and create another buzzing house week for the pupils to engage with! The theme of our next house week is Anti-Bullying which is the focus of our assembly this time round and will be exploring different ways we can tackle this matter in schools. The podium has shifted since our last house week as the maths quiz pushed some houses further up the podium which is great to see and there are going to be plenty more opportunities to gain some further points for your house very soon!

Christmas is the season of family, belonging and joy – to spread cheer and happiness throughout all homes and families. Can you help us provide basic food and Christmas joy this Christmas with our appeal? We are working with Epping Forest Food Bank and ‘3food4U’ to help make someone's Christmas a little easier this year! We need your help to bring in some of the essentials and every item donated equates to a house point for your house. There is a letter coming out that will have further detail on what you can do to get involved and help us help them!

The winner for October is Hope Henry in Year 13. Hope was nominated by Mr Baidoo due to her incredible hard work and her commitment to art. You can see her brilliant winning art piece below. She was awarded her arts prize and certificate earlier this week! She has also won house points for PANKHURST. Congratulations and well done Edie!

Humane Mousetraps Students made humane mousetraps out of old plastic bottles, cardboard, bottle lids and pencils. These mousetraps were built in such a way that the mice are not harmed in any way. We used the turning effects of forces, called moment of forces, which caused the bottles to tilt and trap the mice inside. A further enhancement suggested by students was making holes in the bottles to ensure that there is enough air for the mice to breathe.

Year 10 Students show STEM skills in Forensics at the Royal Institute Over 20 Year 10 students attended the Royal Institution to participate in a workshop on Forensics. All of the students were positive throughout the workshop and use what they have learnt in Science during the workshop. The organisers not only praised the exceptional behaviour of the students but were impressed with the practical skills of the students. One of the organisers commended the efforts of one group stating that if there were positions in the area of forensics, they had the potential to have a career in forensics. “The trip was amazing. We worked in groups of threes to match DNA from a staged ‘crime scene’ to that of a suspect. My group was able to do really well and we were really impressed with ourselves. I highly enjoyed my time and would definitely do it again. Using all the different techniques and unique equipment was something special, especially at our age and it was really a lovely experience.” - Abigail

The Science department and I am sure RVHS are proud of the learning of our students and the Royal Institution cannot wait to prepare future workshops for our students.

£240 was raised at this year's Show Racism the Red Card, Wear Something Red. Thank you very much to all those who took part and/or contributed to support this anti- racism educational charity Click here SRtRC to access the Show Racism the Red Card website to find out more.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

5

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

8

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to. Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
