Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers,

As we approach the end of term, we have had a focus on new beginnings.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Year 11 students all the very best for their future endeavours. My staff and I are so proud of them all and for those not returning to sixth form, I wish them every success in their chosen pathway. It was a pleasure to attend their Prom and see them all so grown up, looking wonderful and really enjoying themselves. They were a really lovely year group. It was then brilliant to have so many back on site for the Sixth Form induction day, they seemed to have grown up overnight. With the calibre of our students, the sixth from will continue to go from strength to strength.

This week, we also said a final goodbye to our Year 13s. I feel honoured to have been their headteacher throughout their seven-year journey. Every one of them is a success, either with outstanding predicted results, university offers or apprenticeship offers, or we are so proud that many have overcome barriers in their lives to become the most respectful and aspirational young people. They are role models and were such a ‘kind’ group. We were delighted that Mrs Wheaton made a return visit to say good-bye and brought her beautiful baby boy along for us to meet. The Prom in the evening was an equally lovely event. The feedback from the staff at the venue was that our students had been the best bunch they’d had this season. They described them as the most fun and polite group they had entertained.

As I reflect on the excitement of their new beginnings, I want to praise and express gratitude to the staff here at the school. They always go the extra mile and are always on hand to support and have helped shape these wonderful young people of the future. The gratitude expressed by the students was tangible.

As we approach the end of term, please can I ask you to check your child’s uniform and make sure that you order replacements in good time for September. Our uniform is now gender neutral and is an important part of the school’s and the student’s identity. Uniform Expectations. If your child chooses to wear the school skirt then please ensure that it is knee length, all students can wear black trousers if they prefer. Please also ensure that your child has the correct PE kit as only kit with the RVHS logo is allowed. There is also an opportunity to purchase ‘preloved’ uniform. Please visit the website here. Black leather shoes must be worn. No trainers.

I have been asked by the Maths Department to highlight that they have been piloting the SparxMaths home learning platform. You may have noticed your child working on Sparx as we transition from HegartyMaths. SparxMaths is an evolution of Hegarty and will fully replace it. This home learning platform takes all the great parts of Hegarty, video explanations and quizzes, whilst also keeping you as parents informed of your child’s progress. We will be fully launching this for the next academic year and more details will be sent in September. The Maths Department runs a very well attended support session on Tuesday afterschool where your child may get support if needed.

The Maths Department has also noticed a number of students not having the equipment needed to be successful in their mathematical studies. Having the correct equipment will allow your child to maximise the practice time in class as well as having them available for home learning tasks. All students are expected to have a scientific calculator (Casio), protractor and a compass alongside all the other basic equipment needed for their learning. A Casio scientific calculator is especially important as students need to get familiar with how to use it successfully in both their mathematical and science studies. We strongly recommend the Casio calculator as this is the one staff use and the one we find simplest for our students to understand. We do sell them in school

Can I remind parents that school closes at 1:20pm for students on Wednesday 12th July for staff training.

The last day of term, Friday 21st July, will be a charity non-uniform day with students leaving the school site at 12.20pm. Further details regarding the last day of term and the start of the new term will follow in a separate letter.

Finally, I would like to congratulate Mrs Dyer. She will be leaving Roding Valley at the end of this term as she has taken a promotion to Headship in another school. I am sure you would want to join me in congratulating her on her new role.

Have an enjoyable weekend

Year 7 News

Message from Miss Reed

As the end of the term approaches, there are lots of activities still happening which our Y7 students are part of.

Last week the residential trip went out for 3 nights where students took part in lots of exciting activities and developed their overall skills. The students were great and thoroughly enjoyed their time away!

The District sports athletics team also competed last week against schools in the district. There were lots of fantastic performances in Y7 with the Y7 Girls finishing 2nd out of 12 schools! 5 Year 7 students were also selected to represent the district this week which is a brilliant achievement for them.

Next week also sees the first day of our sports day where students will compete in their house teams within the athletics field events. Students have been signing up this week. The following week, the whole school will head to the field for the track event which will include the popular relay race as well as a staff relay which students love! On sports day, all students are allowed to wear their PE kit to school.

Bedrock challenge - this week we have a launched the bedrock challenge where students should complete as much Bedrock as possible developing their literacy skills. The top students will be picked out of a hat at the end of the term and win prizes!

Students reports were sent out last week with an update on their progress within subject areas and an attitude to learning grade. If you have any queries regarding this, please feel free to contact the subject teacher. All emails are available on the school website.

A reminder that expectations remain the same as we approach the end of term. Uniform should be perfect and students should be bringing all of their equipment to school including a reading book.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to your child’s Academic mentor or contact myself (hreed@rodingvalley.net)

I would like to wish everyone a great weekend.

Message from Mr Ryan

It is hard to believe but we have nearly made it to the end of the academic year. At this point in the year it is really good to reflect on what has gone well and what could be improved for next year. Last week you should have received your child's report. In this you will be able to see where they are in relation to their end of year 11 target grade. If any of these reports have red/concern then the class teacher for that particular subject should be in touch with you.

As the reports have gone out I would like to remind you that there is only one exam week in year 8 and that was just after Christmas. Students will be sitting assessments over the next few weeks but the reports that have been sent home relate to their assessments over the year. Please support your child with revision for these assessments.

Last weekend I had the pleasure to go on the residential to Lincoln with 99 Year 7s and 8s. It was so much fun and thankfully the weather held off, for the main part. Although, I had my group who I was incredibly proud of, I also got to see other members of the year group really step out of their comfort zones. A special mention for Eesa Saddique, for challenging himself on every activity. Another mention for Freya Watson, Isabele Harriott and Olivia Curran-Manning, fearlessly cracked on with everything and beat the boys without even blinking. Finally, I need to thank my group for all the encouragement on the leap of faith!

Yesterday, Mr Allen took some year 8 students to the BFI for a talk on WW2 and cinema. The staff were incredibly complimentary about the school but especially Matthias Opaleye. They were really impressed with his knowledge of WW2. This afternoon another group of students are on their way to the theatre. I hope they enjoy themselves.

I always encourage students to read as much as possible and complete Bedrock. This week's highest Bedrock score was achieved by… Alexander Belnikof with 154 points!

As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact academic mentors or myself (fryan@rodingvalley.net)

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Fazakerley

As we finish off another two busy weeks, I have started to put together our final celebration assembly. I can't wait to celebrate all the hard work and achievements that we have all made over the past 12 months. The emails have started coming in thick and fast from various different staff members wanting to acknowledge the efforts of so many Year 9's. It is something that I look forward to every year, and I really do hope we can celebrate as many of you as possible. Please do look out for our last bulletin where we will publish all of these wonderful achievements.

We had a large number of Year 9 students representing RVHS at the District Athletics competition at Melbourne Park last week. I can't wait to hear about how each of our athletes fared and if any of them have reached the next round of competitions. The PE department has informed me that all the students competed to the best of their abilities and represented the school wonderfully. I look forward to celebrating some of these students, as well as many others at our annual Sports Awards evening coming up. Please do look out for an invite to this evening if your child has participated in two or more school sports teams.

Going into the final three weeks of this academic year, I just want to reiterate that nothing changes. We still maintain the very high standards we have regarding our uniform, our behaviour and our conduct in the community. Don't let yourself down by dropping the ball in these last remaining weeks. Keep up the hard work, and finish off on a high!

As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to your child’s Academic mentor or contact myself (jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net)

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website.

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Message from Miss Pinches

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 10 cohort who have finished their first round of PPE’s. They have shown great maturity and energy towards the exam process and have truly done themselves proud in an otherwise stressful situation.

We have a few things coming up over our last weeks of the Summer term.

Our Careers week is also fast approaching, week beginning Monday 10th July. Please ensure you have completed the google form for Take Your Child to Work Day. The letter from Ms Mason with all information and links can be found here.

Careers week also includes our Post 16 taster day with students having the opportunity to either visit NCC for a college day or take part in A level lessons on the school site. Please ensure your child has completed the attached form so we can plan accordingly.

I would also like to congratulate our YES prefects for the upcoming academic year. This is a fantastic opportunity to mentor our incoming Year 7 students and a vital part of our 7 Year Journey.

Year 11 News

Message from Miss Edwards

Wow, it is crazy to think that this will be the last ever entry for year 11! What a journey they have all been on. It was so wonderful to celebrate the end of an era with our Leavers assembly on Tuesday where we came together as a year group to look back at all of the fun times and wonderful memories made. Students enjoyed the opportunity to have their shirts signed by all of their friends and favourite teachers and make the most of the chance to say goodbye to so many wonderful people in our RVHS community.

This was then followed by the long awaited Prom. What a night this was! Each and every student looked so grown up in their finery, and all celebrated the night away with some great food and even better music. It was great to see the smile on all their faces, enjoying this moment with all of their nearest friends and just taking it all in. Please do look out for the link to the professional photos; there are some wonderful snaps amongst them.

Yesterday, we welcomed back so many of our current year 11 students for their Year 12 Transition day. Students gained a valuable insight into the subject options they have been offered, enjoyed a wonderful BBQ cooked by our resident chef's Mr Naidoo & Mr Vermaak and participated in a carousal of enrichment sessions in the afternoon. I trust that the students all had a great day and are very excited about joining us again in September.

Whilst we are celebrating this journey and all of our fabulous milestones, I wanted to acknowledge the amazing achievement by a very small number of our year 11 students who managed 100% attendance for their entire time with us; over the past 5 years. A huge congratulation to Hannah Clemens, Jasmine Singh & Arabella Smith. This is truly something to be recognised and celebrated, and shows the hard work, dedication and determination of each of these wonderful young ladies. These girls truly are everything that we inspire to be at RVHS. I wish them, together with every other year 11 the best of luck for their futures, and look forward to keeping up with what the next steps are for all of our 2018-2023 co hort.

6th Form News

We have been delighted to appoint a number of students into our very prestigious student leadership positions. The interview process was competitive and challenging. We feel all students who put themselves forward showed great commitment to our school and should be very proud of themselves. Our winners are shown below.

Student Executive House Captains

6th Form News

Congratulations to all those students. We will also appoint our sixth form captains and subject ambassadors in the coming week, please do look out for our announcements.

University Open Days

We continue to see our students booking places on university open days. This is a very valuable experience for them and will always be an approved leave of absence.

Here is the feedback from one of our students on her experience at Queen Mary’s last week:

On Friday 16th June, I visited Queen Mary University of London for an open day, where I participated in subject talks for Geography and Psychology. The talks were very informative and supported my future pathway, helping me realise that I would like to continue studying Physical Geography at university. Furthermore, I received the opportunity to talk to current Mathematics students who inspired me to do a joint honours degree of Physical Geography and Mathematics. The university is located in Mile End next to Regents Canal where we were able to sit and eat lunch. Queen Mary is a campus university so it feels safe and relaxed but is located in London so also allows students to experience city life. Having visited Queen Mary, LSE and Kent, which we visited with the school, I have discovered that I would prefer to attend a campus university. Seeing these universities in person and speaking with students has heavily influenced my decision. This trip was beneficial as well as enjoyable as it provided an insight into university life and helped narrow down options that are best suited for me - Olivia

At this time of year, it is essential that year 12 are actively researching their chosen universities. Please do support them with this. We have our annual post-18 information evening coming up on 4th July, during which we will share information all about the UCAS process, apprenticeships as an alternative pathway, and we also have two guest speakers: one from the University of Exeter and another who is an alumnus. We hope you will be able to join us.

This week at Science and Medicine Society, we carried out dissections to celebrate Insect Week! We have also produced new posters, which you can look out for in your Science lab!

Every Friday at 3pm in S2, the Sixth Form team run Roding Valley's Science and Medicine Society where we put on fun activities and practical’s. If you're interested in Science or Medicine, feel free to come along, it's open to all year groups, regardless of what you want to do for a career. We hope to see you there!

As part of the National Insect Week, we did an insect dissection to investigate their gas exchange system, which is actually a required practical in Year 12 Biology. It was great to see the younger students interested in such higher level content.

In honour of insect week this week, we have done a practical of dissecting bugs! Once dissected we observed the bug's respiratory system and how it differs from a human system. The practical was incredibly interesting and fun and I really enjoyed learning about insects!

"Academic Marathon" is a new initiative that discovers students' potential through an immersing and challenging event. Just like "Marathon Running Race", "Academic Marathon" holds similar spirits and takes students' academic learning to a completely new level. Academic Marathon is not only about the championship but also about extending students' limits in academic learning and exploring their own potentials.

On Tuesday 20th June, a dozen Y12 Scientists took part in the continental qualifiers of the International Academic Marathon, choosing to participate for either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Miss Hodges

The academic marathon was a great challenge, allowing me to read further than my A-level course and learn new things. Since the marathon was done online it was very convenient to access and participate - Anish

It was really fun to learn about a wide variety of applications of Chemistry. The marathon allowed me to explore my interests within the subject as some articles were more enjoyable than others, and I might even research them further

I found the academic marathon very interesting as I got the chance to learn about new topics and discoveries that we don't cover in the curriculum. For the A-Level exam essay question, this wider reading will be really useful - Nancy Tabram 12U

Being a part of the Academic Marathon was a really fun and enjoyable experience as it helped me gain valuable and interesting information about Biology outside of the specification. The sources provided were very helpful as it can support us when writing Biology essays in the future - Lucy Luong 12S

Anglia Ruskin

University Health and Social Care Careers Expo

On Monday 3rd July a group of Y10 students attended the ARU Health and Social Care Careers Expo. They learnt about the numerous different careers available within the field, learnt first aid skills, and had the opportunity to speak to a range of professionals - Miss

I really enjoyed the practical’s some career stalls had. I learnt a lot and I now understand how to do the Heimlich manoeuvre. I also learnt the difference roles people have in an ambulance. The lectures were very informative and proved different pathways can still lead to success in STEM

I enjoyed hearing about a range of different careers in the NHS, as well as learning some potential lifesaving skills- such as how to correctly perform CPR. I also enjoyed being able to visit a university, and actively engaging with people who work, and study there -

I really enjoyed the workshops and I learned that people with dementia can get given toys with heartbeats to help trigger memory - Ellie

Last week, we took 100 Y7/Y8 students to Lincolnshire on a PGL residential trip where students experienced lots of outdoor activities whilst facing their fears at times as well as developing their skills.

On arrival students settled into their accommodation and had their first meal before embracing a game of kick rounders in the rain!

Over the next three days, students embarked on lots of exciting activities including canoeing, high ropes, giant swing, trapeze and the thrilling zip line! Students were fantastic and some really did face their fears encouraging other group members too.

Evening activities included a quiz lead by the leaders, outdoor games and Karaoke which saw students sing their favourite songs as well as staff which the students loved!

Overall the residential trip was fantastic; students were fantastic and I would like to thank all the staff who gave up their time to enable the students to gain this experience.

Students got to enjoy exploring the Natural History Museum on Tuesday 27th June. A range of exhibitions were available from fossils to dinosaurs-the students were impeccably behaved and really had a good experience-please have a look at the pictures and student feedback.

On Tuesday 27th June we went to the National History Museum. It was a great adventure and a new experience going up to London with my mates. We learned about dinosaurs, earthquakes and rocks and diamonds –Connor Winkworth 7Li

It was a great experience since I had never been, I loved the earthquake section and how interactive it was. During the time I was there we got to see so many things: Earthquakes, Evolution, Human evolution and even birds. I learnt about extinction and evolution of birds. I even saw this suit which Mrs Patel explained how when people do experiments about volcanoes.

This week is celebrated as Healthy Eating Week, please see the link below which is a very informative webinar

My favourite thing about the trip was the beautiful rocks and fossils we saw. It was incredible to think about how old they were but still were in such amazing condition. They interested me as they all came in so many different shapes and sizes and they each had something that was unique to them. I thought everything there was really cool as well though! – Anya Gosling 7Fl

In mid-table, 7a/Lb2 remain in 4th place, with 7a/Lb1 and 7a/Lb3 maintaining their positions in 5th and 6th places respectively. Can either class up the ante in the final weeks to overtake 7a/Lb2 before the end of term?

Well done as well to our top 5 readers, likewise to those of you who have increased your personal word counts this week.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.
