Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents and Carers
Word of the Week: Commemorate
It continues to be a very positive and purposeful time in school for all our students’.
I trust that you have all now read our Ofsted Report, it will be live on the government website next week. If you missed my email, it can be found on the school website in current letters. Click here
To quote the lead inspector, ' You have a very good school, with an outstanding sixth form.'
As the headteacher, I am very proud of this school, and the quality of education that we offer. My staff have worked tirelessly to make significant improvements to the school and establish the learning journey through to the age of 18. As we endeavour to continuously improve, we remain committed to every child, both their academic success and personal well being.
We are a local school, serving our local community and we will continuously self evaluate to make further improvements as we aspire to be the very best that we can be.
Academic success is very important but in a non selective school, it is important that we recognise that all children have different starting points and experiences. We aspire to add value to the life chances of every child and I am therefore, very proud of our published 2022 Progress 8 measure.
I believe in an inclusive culture and value attendance, behaviour and uniform as key attributes in success.
In line with the national picture, our attendance rates have not returned to their excellent pre pandemic levels and this will have an impact on those students affected. I thank every parent/carer who has a positive attitude to school attendance as you are making a difference and really supporting your child. Can I reiterate that we do not authorise holidays in term time and students should attend school unless they are seriously ill. Students should aim to be in school 100% of the time and we are always on hand to support children with barriers to attendance.
0pts 0pts 0pts 0pts 0pts
There is clear evidence of the correlation between attendance and achievement; the impact on reading and progress is very stark in the formative years of study as students build skills and knowledge through KS3. It can become even more apparent as students enter GCSE/ Post 16. Few students with attendance below 90%, achieve their potential at GCSE, or achieve grade Bs and above at A level. Attendance at 90%, which may sound good, is actually the equivalent to half a day missed each week. If your child studies a vocational course a few missed sessions can be the difference between pass/fail, merit/distinction as the course is assessed on an ongoing basis.
Our students do take pride in their school and I again, thank parents for their support with uniform and behaviour. Please do note that we now have uniform. We worked hard to improve the image of the school and it is important that uniform worn is both smart and appropriate. Girl’s pleated skirts are to be worn at knee length, however, they can if they prefer wear plain black school trousers. With the evenings drawing in, please ensure that your child travels directly home from school, the station is not a safe place for young people to hang about. Large groups of teenagers, even if behaving perfectly, can be intimidating to the local community especially the elderly. Please discourage your child from hanging around outside Sainsbury’s at the end of the day. The vast majority of our students are amazing and polite but a tiny minority can let us down. If you are buying new winter shoes, please check the website for appropriate footwear. Students are NOT allowed to wear black, labelled trainers of any kind.
Today, the whole school participated in a ‘Remembrance’ Assembly led by myself and the humanities team. To feel the entire school community of 1600+ people fall silent for 2 minutes is very special and respectful. Remembrance will affect different students in a variety of ways but if your child is adversely affected, please encourage them to talk to their academic mentor or year progress leader.
I also had the pleasure of judging the Year 7 Antarctica Flag Competition, this was also very moving as many of our Year 7s had created amazing flag designs to capture their celebration of Antarctica Day and their hopes and aspirations for this treasured area of the world. The competition was organised by Miss Barron, Head of Geography, through the UK Polar Network. The winning flag will be off to the Antarctica on a mission and we hope to be able to track its progress with the scientists. The winner was Sienna Chudasama with her ‘hopeful’ penguin.
To remind our Year 11 parents that the Sixth Form Open Evening is on Wednesday 23rd November letter with details sent on 3rd Nov. Please can other parents note that on this day, students will go leave at 2. I hope that you will enjoy the rest of the bulletin and celebrate the continued success of our students and their school.
Kind regards
Sharon Jenner

Year 7 News
Message from Miss Reed
Welcome back to the second half term of the Autumn term where there will be lots of exciting activities happening in the lead up to Christmas.
Parents/Carers should have received your son/daughters school report before the half term break. I am extremely impressed with students’ overall attitude to learning grades which confirms the fantastic start that Year 7 have had. Should you have any queries regarding the report, feel free to contact the subject teacher for some extra feedback.
Can I remind parents/students of our uniform policy where the correct should uniform should be worn each day. In particular, the school blazer to be worn at all times. Trainers should not be worn unless in PE kit; should your son/daughter require to wear alternative footwear, please provide them with a note so a uniform card can be issued.
A reminder that extra curricular clubs continue to run on a weekly basis within all subject areas. Check out the timetable on our website for all current clubs. These are a great opportunity for students to make new friends as well as take part in something then enjoy.
I have been made aware of an app linked to snapchat called 'send it'. This involves anonymous messages being sent around where you are unaware of who has sent the original message. I strongly advise that your son/daughter does not have this app. We encourage students to ensure their social media accounts are private and ask that parents keep a close eye on who students are talking to via social media platforms.
LOST PROPERTY
To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net
We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.
Message from Mr Ryan
The last two weeks have flown by. I hope everyone had a lovely half term? Now that we're back the students seem well rested and ready to learn. There are a few things that I need to mention for the half term.
Parents Evening
You should have received your child's report at the start of this week. We also had parents' evening yesterday. If you were unable to book appointments, please email either myself or your child's teachers directly. Some teachers may have emailed you already to make you aware that there are no concerns in their subject but should you wish to speak to a member of staff we will happily facilitate that. I would like to remind you that we don't actually share grades and can only make you aware if your child is on track to achieve their target grades.
Uniform
Now that we are getting into Winter could I please remind you of the uniform expectations. Students will need a coat preferably blue or black. They are not to wear these coats inside the building. The school jumper is a black V neck with the school logo on it. This can be worn under the blazer but NOT instead of the blazer. Skirts should be on the knee, quite a number of girls have taken to rolling their skirts. Shoes should be plain black leather with no logos. There are quite a few students wearing Nike trainers, claiming that they are shoes. This is not the case. If your child has P.E. they should attend school in their PE kit, with their blazer over it. If they have a fixture after school, then they are required to come to school in full school uniform and change after school. The only exception to this is if the fixture is during the school day.
Social Media
There have been a few incidents recently regarding social media. Students are creating groups on Insta/Snapchat and adding others to the group. There is very little that we as a school can do about things that happen on social media, so if this is the case please report this to the police. There are a few precautions you can make to keep your child safe on social media.
1) Be friends with them yourself, that way you can see what they are tagged in.
2) Check their privacy settings, no one apart from their friends should be able to see what they are posting, or should be able to add them to anything.
3) Block any unknown numbers
4) Please be aware that there is now a feature called Sendit where people can add the feature to their Insta/Snap and others can comment anonymously.
I would like to congratulate Aneta C for being this week's Bedrock Champion. Please be aware that if your child says they have no home learning to do, there is always Bedrock.
Year 9 News
Message from Miss Fazakerley
Another brilliant start to the half term, with so many opportunities thrown at the Year 9 students. We have had some brilliant applicants for Year 9 house captains, which will be announced in due course. Our first student voice meeting of the half term. Debate club with Ms Patel is an amazing atmosphere, with Year 9 students being the majority of the attendees there is still space if anyone would like to learn how to debate well and discuss hot topics!
During the half term, a once in a lifetime Football and Netball tour to South Africa went ahead. It was the most amazing trip, getting to see some beautiful animals, learn about other cultures as well as compete against students from another country at football and netball.
The week commencing 28th November, we have the Year 9 assessment week, where students will be assessed in everything that they have learnt. Please keep an eye out for correspondence regarding the revision microsite.
We have been made aware of a feature on snapchat called 'Send It'. This is where students put a question box on their snapchat story and anyone that they have on their snapchat friends list can send an anonymous question or statement. This cannot be traced back to the sender as it remains anonymous. Please can we ensure our students are practicing safe social media usage. That they do not have people that they don't know nor do they have people that they are not friends with. This feature has been shown to have some very unpleasant messages being sent. If they have received any unpleasant messages, please report to Snapchat and go to the police. Please make sure that you are aware of who your child is friends with and talking to. As well as, they have their privacy settings set to private and that their location cannot be seen.
As the days are getting colder please make sure students are wearing the correct uniform that can be purchased at Forest Casuals. Students are bringing a coat in for break and lunch to ensure that they are able to remain warm when outside.
As always, if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s Academic Mentor (jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net)
Year 10 News
Message from Mr Dobson
We are now one week into the new half term and it has been great to see the students back and engaged in learning. From the weather this week it now seems that winter has well and truly arrived, so I would like to take this opportunity to remind students that they should bring a coat to school to wear during break and lunch when it is cold.
It is fantastic walking around the School during lesson time and talking to students about learning. Just this week, I have heard excitement about Shakespeare and students wanting to read aloud in class, and genuine happiness about understanding difficult concepts in Maths. It was also a truly humbling experience to hear a group of Year 7 students talking about how they were going to prepare dinner for their families after they had walked out of their Food Technology lessons.
This week in careers on Wednesday Period 1 the students looked at careers in the armed forces. The lesson was accompanied by a PowerPoint, video, and group discussion.
Ms Langlet has asked me to nominate 10Cfr1 for class of the week for completing their Active learning at high standards They are an amazing class well done.
Finally, we observed two minutes' silence on Friday in honour of Remembrance Day. We thought about the sacrifices so many have made for the freedoms we enjoy today. Our thoughts were particularly drawn to the men from our local area whose names are inscribed on the local war memorials, who gave their lives in service to their country from World War One to the present day. This week our Theme of the week was Remembrance and our word of the week was Commemorate there was a remarkable whole school assembly during Period 3 from our History team, which was poignant and thought-provoking.
If you need any clarity on any issues I have raised or just have a general question to ask please contact me via email cdobson@rodingvalley.net

Message from Mr Fletcher
PPE Exams
Year 11 PPE exams are almost complete and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of Year 11 on their attitude and behaviour throughout this exam period. Whilst it has been an academically challenging time for all Year 11 students over the past fortnight it has also acted as great experience for them in terms of preparing themselves for the rigour that will come with the real GCSE exams in the Summer Term.
Uniform/Trainers
Can all Year 11 students be reminded that trainers must not be worn and that school shoes are a compulsory part of the school uniform. The will also be needed for Sixth Form and potential interviews moving forward. I appreciate parental support with this.
Sixth Form Open Evening/College Applications
As we are now in the second half term Year 11 should now be considering options beyond Year 11. Applications for Sixth Form and Colleges are on the horizon and students should be researching courses and options in preparation for post 16 education.

For those students who plan to still make an application to UCAS this academic cycle, a reminder that our suggested internal deadline is 2nd December and we recommend that students try to get their form sent off before their PPEs commence.
If your son/daughter is planning on making a world of work application, please be aware that lots of prestigious roles are currently open for applications and recruiting. If students need any support with these applications Mrs Mason's door is always open.
We also encourage students to make use of the sixth form bulletin which is shared every week and contains information about both university and world of opportunities https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1L4ajN70 SsnaUSN3t1ZwZJDkk mDGXnz/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=102724028912079673479&rtpof=true&sd=true
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website
It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1 1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.
If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
Dear Parents & Carers
We are continuing to run our food bank appeal as a house competition. I want to thank all parents/carers/students who have already made significant contributions to this already. We are collecting food for 3food4u and the Epping Forest Food Bank. As a school we love to support our local community and recognise the value of this for our students, developing caring, compassionate and kind young people. We will be running the collection until Friday 2rd December. This allows enough time for donations via our donation boxes and then a selected number of students to deliver the donated items to the food banks and for it to be sorted in time for Christmas. We would like students to donate food by dropping it into the correct house donation boxes located in the wooden reception area. The winning house will be the one who has collected the most for our two food banks. Points will be awarded to houses accordingly.
We have also gone out to students to advertise the house leadership roles available for this year. We have had over 80 applications. I will be writing to students in the coming days to inform them of the next steps and the outcome of the application process. I want to congratulate all students that have put forward an application as they are all very strong and worthy candidates.
The current house points and current leaderboard puts Churchill in first place. A massive well done to all students, especially those in Churchill who have taken part in a house even already this year! Keep up the hard work and enthusiasm. Let’s see who will win at the end of this year!
We have also had a very successful pumpkin carving competition run by the Art department. Lots of points were handed out to houses as a result of the huge amounts of creativity and enthusiasm shown.

On Tuesday we visited the Transport Museum Depot. All the students had a great day completing their Inspire Engineering challenge. They had to work as a team to design a sustainable town. Their communication skills were brilliant, some of the students showed fantastic leadership and all of the students got to develop their problem solving skills. As well as this they got a tour of the depot and got to interview engineers finding out all about their jobs including how and why they got into engineering.
During the October half term break we were given the opportunity to visit the incredible country of South Africa on a Netball & Football tour. We were lucky enough to experience the true South African culture as we visited The Apartheid Museum, Pretoria, Lesedi cultural village, Gold Reef City Theme Park, Valley of the Waves waterpark and many other unforgettable experiences; we even got to experience the power cuts and no running water! One of the highlights from the trip ware the sunset and sunrise Safari's where we were able to see many of the amazing animals in the wild including Elephants, Giraffes, Cheetahs, Hippopotamus, Rhinos, Zebras and many more. We even saw a cheetah chase take place right in front of us. It was truly amazing! We were also lucky enough to participate in netball matches with schools across South Africa, who welcomed us and provided us with some great competition. We even took away some wins! Before heading home, we were able to stop at a local, underprivileged special needs school where we were able to meet some of the students, hear about what their day to day school life looked like and had the privilege of being able to make some wonderful donations which were greatly received by the staff and students. This was a real eye opener for many of us on the trip and made us realise how lucky we really are. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity which we will never forget and we would just like to thank the teachers who gave up their half term holiday to take us on this awesome trip!

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
