Dear Parents and Carers

I am sorry that the last week of term has been so dominated by the extreme downpour of snow, black ice and the logistics, instead of enjoying the planned Christmas festivities for the students. Thank you to all parents for your continued support during this week, any difficult decisions that we have taken are always in the best interests of our students but I appreciate that we cannot please everyone all of the time. I would like to specifically thank the site staff for their endeavours in challenging circumstances.

It was great that we managed to have the Winter Concert last week, an amazing evening with excellent performances from some of our very talented musicians. I also thoroughly enjoyed watching the Year 10 Pantomime- links media releases - the local primary school thought they were fabulous. Christmas Dinner Day in school was very festive, the canteen cooked a gorgeous Christmas Dinner for over 800 students. That is a really special day in school and I really enjoy helping to serve the dinners along with other members of my team. We are very lucky to have such excellent on site catering staff. In any student survey - the food always comes out on top!

Our students continue to demonstrate a lot of respect and empathy for others, the 6th Form students raised £212.00 from their Christmas Jumper day- the donation will go to Save The Children. The students' support for the local food banks was also quite overwhelming. It was also great to see so many of our younger students giving a helping hand to our older community by helping to serve lunch in our local community. Links to media release.

It was a shame that we have had to postpone our end of term ‘Celebration’ assemblies but the year Progress leaders have planned these for the first week back.

The external theatre production of a Christmas Carol has also been postponed to the 30th January. This will be seen by the Year 10s as part of their GCSE text for English Literature.

We are also saying goodbye to Mr Mammen at the end of term. Mr Mammen has been Deputy Headteacher in charge of Curriculum and Progress since January 2016. I am sure you will all join me in thanking him for his excellent contribution to the school over this period of significant improvement. He is moving to a promoted role, which is well deserved. I am delighted that Miss Larkin has been appointed to this position and she will look forward to working with you all in her new role.

Message from the Headteacher

The Christmas holiday is always a special time to enjoy some quality time with those that we care about. However, it can also be a difficult time for many reasons, we do have support links on our website and wellbeing links (mental health). Those parents in receipt of free school meals will receive vouchers for the holiday period.

The last day of term is Monday 19th December, I trust that the snow and ice would have melted as the temperatures are forecast to increase over the weekend.Monday should be a normal day, starting at 8:30am. Can I remind you that it is a nonuniform day with a planned early closure at 12.20pm. Can I please remind everyone that students need to ensure that clothing is appropriate, practical & safe.

The students return to school on Thursday 5th January 2023 at normal time - 8.30am. We look forward to another successful year for RVHS in 2023.

Kind regards

Year 7 News

Message from Miss Reed

A very well done to all Year 7 students who have completed their first full term at Secondary School. I have been so impressed with how they have transitioned from Primary School and adapted to all the new routines and changes. Students have not only worked extremely hard in their academic studies but have also took on lots of extra-curricular activities and have been part of school teams, trips, open morning and lots more!

Last week students had the opportunity to have Christmas dinner for lunch with a slightly extended lunchtime where they sat down together and enjoyed a delicious meal served by our catering team. This was very much enjoyed by everyone with lots getting into the Christmas spirit!

When we return in January we hold our end of term celebration assembly recognising all of the students hard work in subject areas, achievement points, bedrock points and their attendance to school.

With the New Year approaching, in January students will have their first set of assessments which will take place over three days. We will be providing students with some revision sessions beforehand with information on the tried and tested Roding Valley revision techniques. More information on these assessments will follow in due course.

I would like to wish all students and parents/carers a very Happy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to welcoming all of the students back in January.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me; hreed@rodingvalley.net.

LOST PROPERTY

To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net

Many people are worrying about how you will cope with the rise in living costs this winter, and beyond.

Please see this link here from Essex for financial help and support available for parents.

We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.

Message from Mr Ryan

We have finally made it to the end of term. It has been an exceptionally long term and if you think about it, we have completed a third of Year 8. At the start of the term we were visited by Ofsted and I couldn't have been more proud of how the year group presented themselves. They were a credit to you and the school.

We have had parents evening and I hope that was useful for you. Please be aware that the Information Evening for Year 8 is coming up on the 11th January. This will be an excellent opportunity for me to speak to you directly and share other relevant information. It also coincides with year 8 assessment week.

I have had the pleasure of creating our end of term rewards assembly for January and am thrilled with the students who are going to receive rewards. These have been nominated by subject teachers. I am also really impressed with the amount of students whose attendance is 100% Keep it up.

This term we have had some excellent opportunities for the year group to get involved in. Along with a few memorable trips. My highlight has to be taking students as part of the English Faculty rewards trip to see Back to the Future (I still can't work out how they got the car to fly) We have the football trip and the end of year residential to look forward to in '23. Along with any other opportunities for your child to represent the school and their house.

If over the holidays your son or daughter claims that they are bored (if they've eaten too much sugar, or have completed the latest game) then please encourage them to keep up with their Bedrock. They should be completing a minimum of 40 minutes a week. They can also read and take Accelerated Quizzes. It is also the perfect opportunity for the to complete any outstanding homework on Google Classroom. Please have a lovely time, look after yourselves and I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year. Merry Christmas.

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Fazakerley

Wow, we have made it through a third of Year 9! Well done to all Year 9's for their hard work, determination and attitude over these past few months. I have been extremely impressed with the application of all students to their studies and I look forward to seeing this continue when we return to school in the new year.

It was lovely to see so many year 9's enjoy a trip to the theatre to see Woman in Black. Our students behaved impeccably and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Looking into the new year, many Year 9's have been selected to go on the Manchester Trip and we also have many students heading off on the Ski Trip at the end of the half term. I encourage all our students to involve themselves in as many trips, visits, and extra-curricular opportunities as they can.

In January we will host our End of Term Celebration Assembly where we will see many different students receive an award, in recognition of their hard work.

I would like to wish all students in Year 9, their families, and friends the warmest of Christmas wishes and a Happy New Year. Enjoy this festive period, but please stay safe. I look forward to welcoming you all back to school at 8.25am on Thursday 5th January 2023

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 10 News

Message from Mr Dobson

This has been a very testing term for our Year 10s with the start of their GCSEs being on the forefront of everyone's minds, the vast majority of Year 10s have risen to the challenge! With all this going on, students have still been able to crack on to the best of their abilities in lessons and learn how to continue to prepare for exams next academic year. I am as always very proud of you all and keep it up heading into next term!

The hard work and effort Year 10 have put into their lessons has been noticed. Many Year 10 students have been rewarded for their excellent classwork and the celebration assembly in January will highlight all student's efforts. There have been some real acts of kindness and supportiveness shown by students helping others to get ready for exams and sporting events. I am always so proud when students join our year group and are so warmly welcomed and supported, well done to you all.

Top 3 ARE Points Autumn 2022:

One final thing for today's bulletin is that I will be leaving RVHS.

I have spent only seven years at RVHS but it has formed the most significant years of my career. I leave with an exciting future planned and warm memories of all members of the RVHS community. I have thoroughly enjoyed my position as Year Progress Leader for Year 10 but my time is up and I will pass the YPL baton onto Ms. Pinches in January 2023.

I wish you all success and good health in the future.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best Wishes to you all.

Year 11 News

Message from Mr Fletcher

Before I begin I would like to emphasise how proud I am of the way in which all Year 11 have approached the first term of their final year of GCSE study. Their application and diligence has been excellent!

I wanted to use this opportunity to congratulate everyone, it has been an enormously busy and eventful first term and they have risen to the challenges presented to them admirably.

Students have had guest speakers, revision sessions, PPE exams, sixth form and college open evenings and applications in preparation for post 16 choices, interventions, extra sessions and many have been involved in further sporting or enrichment activities such as netball, football and Duke of Edinburgh.

I would personally also like to say a big thank you to the Year 11 Academic Mentor team on behalf of the students. The Academic Mentor Team has delivered intervention sessions to students three times a week at the start of the day to help them improve their English, Maths or Science ability.

- Miss Bates

- Miss D'Ilio

- Mr Qureshi

- Mr Jennings - Mr Dennis - Mr Saghir

- Mr Jones & both Mr Rahmans!!

I really hope that all Year 11 students get plenty of opportunities for some good times with family and friends over the Christmas break so that students return fresh and ready for the new year!

I would like to wish you all a very peaceful Christmas and a healthy, safe New Year! Thank you for your ongoing support.

6th Form News

Christmas Jumper Day

Last week we celebrated Christmas Jumper day in aid of Save the Children. The sixth form felt very festive and brought cheer to younger students. We raised £212 for the charity.

Chelsea Development Programme

Students on the Chelsea Programme last week had the opportunity to visit Twickenham University to find out about sports related degrees. We took students from across year 11, 12 and 13 and they found the day both enjoyable and inspiring.

Work Shadowing

This term we have launched work shadowing with our year 12 students. All students need to secure a work shadowing placement for the last week of the academic year and working hard to do so. If you are able to support this opportunity by taking a student on placement, please don’t hesitate to contact sixthformoffice@ and we can put you in touch with students are interested in your sector.

UCAS

Well done to all those students in year 13 who met our internal deadline for sending off their UCAS application. The majority of applications have now been made which is great news. Many students are receiving offers back or being invited for interviews where this step is needed. This is a very exciting time for year 13 and wish all those who are making an application the best of luck!

Roding Valley High School’s student community has come together again this year to collect items for our local food banks. It has been a very successful collection with lots of food and other items being donated in time for the Christmas food parcels. Each year students at RVHS take part in a foodbank collection for Epping Forest Food Bank and 3Food4U as part of their house system. The school prides itself on the role it plays within the local community. We are very lucky to have such an amazing student and parent community that works closely with us in continuing to play our role in supporting the needs of our community.

This week at RVHS has been ‘Empathy and Charity’ week where students have been completing a series of tasks based around this theme.

Students have been in their house vertical forms exploring the meaning of empathy and what it looks like to be empathetic. Students have taken part in a series of tasks including reflecting on their recent acts of kindness and how that impacts our school community, see the acts of kindness trees below for some examples. They have also had an assembly delivered by fellow students where they have been introduced to the charity each house will be supporting this year, please see adjacent, and the work their charity does.

Students were working in vertical forms to rewrite/modernise the poem 'Twas the night before Christmas'. Here are some examples of brilliant work from form time.

T’was the night before Christmas, curled up in bed with a fire to my right in hopes for Santa to make a visit through the night I lay there with the warmth adoring my skin counting down the minutes for the fun to begin whispers and giggles fill the silence as I start to drift off for when morning comes it will be Christmas

It was Christmas Eve when Silence filled the house, No creature dared to speak, Not even a mouse.

Their stockings were hung up And they began with their prayer In hope that the fat man Will soon be there.

They went to their rooms And then to their beds, They closed their eyes With dreams through their heads.

It was the night before Christmas, Moments until Santa would land on the house, The kitchen a mess, The turkey sitting in the fridge, The wrapping paper everywhere, The window was open blowing cold air in the house, The kid went to the window to shut it, It was then he saw, SANTA,

The 8 reindeer all lined up and Rudolf in the front, He ran down stairs waiting for Santa, But the presents were wrapped, Lots of them, There was no sight of Santa, I ran outside, All he saw was snow, And no sight of the reindeer the slay or Santa,

The parents were tired, The presents were wrapped, They too went to bed To have a winter nap.

In the morning they awoke To the presents below the tree, For the Christmas they had Was indeed rather merry!

Karla Myburgh Jonah Harris Archie Savage

T’was the night before Christmas, The fire ablaze, Santa was waiting for everyone to be in a daze.

The tree was the tall, the lights with their glow Waiting for presents to be stowed

The children slept, the reindeer wept, Awaiting Santa’s arrival

The plate loaded, for only a second, Santa is here, no stocking left unloaded

The snowflakes fall, the snow settles, they said 6 inches, the kids will be startled Snowmen asleep waiting to be woken, by small little kids no fun to be wasted

The sun arose the kids ran, downstairs to the tree where the presents sat The sound of tearing, the sound of joy, the presents all open there is breakfast to enjoy. The cars pull up, to the road outside, the family is here, the kids play outside. Snowballs are thrown, snowmen are woken, Christmas is fun no friendships will be broken.

T’was the night before Christmas

And all through the land Not a single thing stirred Not even the man

The man of great beard With soot from the chimney in his hair

He made no sound With bags filled with a jingle teddy bear

The carrots for the Reindeer They lay on the table ‘Welcome the cheer’, Say the deer

Wrappings of discarded presents awaiting tomorrow, We wait for the stocking to be filled down at the grotto.

As the merry man once said, Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

It was the night before Christmas, Deliveroo is on its way, It is Chinese takeaway time it’s really going to sleigh! The house is now ‘Alexa’ turned on the light, Get the lads online it’s time for Fortnite!

Hot chocolates topped with marshmallows warm up our hearts,

Whilst ‘Harry Styles’ and ‘Lizzo’ fight for number 1 on the charts! Football is on and England know ‘it’s coming home.’ Basically, Christmas is here and we are all STILL hoping for snow

Theatre Trips

Year 7 Theatre Trip – The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

A captivating performance and the perfect way to start December! 103 of our year 7 students journeyed into London to watch the spell-binding performance of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. With an amazing set, beautiful lights and fantastic actors they were transported to Narnia and enjoyed the adventure alongside the Pevensie siblings. Luckily, they all escaped the clutches of The White Witch and made it back to Loughton with amazing tales to tell!

Year 8 Theatre Trip – Back to the Future

Our year 8 students were supposed to be travelling into London to watch a theatre production, but in the end they did so much more than that. They travelled through time with Marty McFly on an epic mission! Here is what one student had to say about the trip:

Recently I attended the Back to the Future trip and I thought it was excellent.

First of all, we all got on a coach and travelled to the theatre - it took around 1 hour to get there. Once we got there, we had another head count to make sure we were all still together which I thought was really good and made me feel extra safe.

The play was amazing, personally I really liked the plot of it as it was sort of predictable, but not at the same time. The set was also terrific, amazing lights, spinning stage and also an upside down car! I would certainly recommend it and would definitely do it again.

Theatre Trips

Year 9 Theatre Trip – Woman In Black

A thrilling experience for all! After a lovely lunch in Covent Garden, students took their seats for a hair raising production which had us all on the edge of our seats. With a combination of humour, tension and plot twists this was a roller coaster ride of a show that had our students talking about it all the way home!

The Christmas Mystery

24th December 2020 11:44pm

Nick is lying awake in bed; he'd seen the presents Santa had placed under the tree and even shaken a few, but only his.

Thudding comes from above. THUMP, THUMP! Maybe Santa had returned to bring more presents?

He is so excited he can't sleep. Soon after the sun finally rises, Nick suddenly jumps out of bed. ‘IT'S CHRISTMAS WHOOP!’

He rushes down stairs like a tornado, brushing all the pictures off the wall, Nick checks the tree and… nothing?

Crumbs were scattered from the dining room table into the chimney.

‘I knew it. He is a robber!!’ Nick detectively worked out. A present ribbon hung from the bricks but then he thought ‘But Santa makes toys, why would he steal them back?’

25th December 2020 9:21am

He gets into his Christmas onesie and runs across the street, carefully of course, and bangs on Billy’s door. ‘HEY! ANYBODY HOME?’

The door slowly opens and Nick barges in. Billy’s sister sits alone on the sofa.

‘Yours are missing too?’ Nick asked. They nod sadly.

‘I think it's Santa…’

‘But Santa makes toys?’ Billy’s sister said.

‘That's what I thought. Where's your mum?’ Nick wondered.

‘Asleep. Anyway, how do you expect a 5 year old, and two 11 year olds to catch a crook that ruined Christmas.’ ‘Well, maybe, I thought we would call Chloe and see if it happened to her…’ Nick paused.

25th December 2020 11:02am

So they run to Chloe's house to see if her presents were stolen. BANG, BANG, BANG.

‘Hey Nick, hey Billy, hey Nora,’ Chloe said ‘why are you here?’

‘Well all our presents are missing.’

Ethan was found lying on the floor sucking his thumb.

‘Men, van, eve, men, van, eve, men, van, eve, men, van, eve.’ He repeated. ‘Men, van, eve? What?’

‘I don't know either. He’s been like this for so long.’ Chloe moaned. ‘Men in a van on Christmas eve.’ Nora said, deciphering Ethan’s code. ‘So if Santa didn't steal them, what men were outside?’

‘We need to look deeper into this.’ Billy said ‘I agree. Thanks for your help Chloe!’ Nick said distantly running towards the school. It was dark during the winter holidays, but the back door was open so they snuck in.

‘I don't think we should be doing this…’ Nora whispered.

‘It’s only bad if we get caught.’ Billy replied. They opened the hall door to a bright room full of their presents. ‘Hey, there they are!’ Nora exclaimed. The kids cheer until they saw them…

‘WHY DID YOU RUIN CHRISTMAS FOR US?’ Nora sprinted towards them but Billy held her back. The thieves revealed their identities and it was a big surprise.

‘Mrs Taylor, Mr Wilson and Miss Woods!’ Everyone shouted out.

‘Why would you do this?’

‘There is an answer for everything and this one is heart-warming.’ Miss Woods said.

‘We BORROWED your presents for St. Mary’s Orphanage. The nannies couldn't afford presents for everyone.’ Mr Wilson said.

‘And all parents agreed.” Mrs Taylor said. Suddenly everyone's parents walked into the hall through the side door.

‘Hey Billy and Nora.’ Said their mum.

‘Hi Nick!’ Said Nick's mum.

Then the children realised Christmas was all about giving and not getting.

The End – Casey King, Year 7

Many thanks to the first group of students to the Art Spray Painting Club.

Year 7 and 8 students learnt how to safely create quick, exciting, large pieces of art work using simple, non threatening equipment such as sharp blades and aerosol spray paints.

What could go wrong? As it turned out, very little actually.

The new cycle of the club will begin shortly…..Invitations will be sent out to the students that have previously applied.

Any students interested in this club down should send me an email to dtisdale@rodingvalley.net with your name and form and I’ll get back to you.

Firstly, what a last week of term it’s been! I hope we are all still warm and on two feet! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those I haven’t had the pleasure of speaking with. My name is Ms Pinches and I’m so excited to be taking over as Acting Year Progress Leader for Year 10. I am an English and History teacher at RVHS and you’ll normally find me in E6 or on the corridor!

I have been an academic mentor for this year group since Year 7 so hopefully that gives me a jump start on learning students’ names! I’m really looking forward to working with the year group and giving support during this critical time of education.

Please always feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns, or just want to say hi!

You’ll be hearing more from me in 2023!

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

What is DODDLE?

Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
