Farewell from Mrs Jenner
Dear Parents/ Carers,
It has been wonderful to be part of the final celebration assemblies and to see so many students receiving awards for progress and attitude across the curriculum. Please go to each year group page for a full list of awards presented.
It was a fabulous evening at the Sports Awards and we were honoured to have Gary Mabbutt, former Tottenham Hotspur Captain and England footballer, as our guest speaker. He spoke about resilience and overcoming barriers, including his personal struggle with diabetes. He encouraged our students never to give up and always try their best, he was keen to highlight that he was fortunate but that students must maintain a focus on their academic studies. He was a true gentleman.
I have written to all parents regarding start of term arrangements and the school’s expectations for September. The letter is on the website and can be viewed by clicking here. It contains very important information regarding uniform, attendance and start of term arrangements.
Mr Charlton will be writing his first communication to all parents and carers at the beginning of the new school year.
I would like to draw your attention to vacancy that we have in the canteenCatering Assistant Vacancy if you have any questions and require further information please contact phenrye@rodingvalley.net

It has been a real privilege to have served the Roding Valley Community for 11 years and leading the school for 7 years. I am very proud of the school’s achievements, the creation of a very successful sixth form, the team that has been created and given the now oversubscription for places, the realisation of my vision ‘to become the school of choice in the local community’. All schools need to continue to move forward and evolve and I am confident that the school will continue its upward trajectory and high expectation under the new leadership of Mr Charlton from September. Roding Valley High School is a very special place, the students are amazing and the teachers are highly skilled & committed; I will keep a very fond eye on its future endeavours. Thank you for all your kind messages, I have appreciated them all.
The community will also say a fond farewell to Mrs Dyer, the Deputy Headteacher. Mrs Dyer has been at the school for 27 years. She is a dedicated teacher and leader, she always believes in every student and wants to find the best in everyone. Mrs Dyer has had a huge positive impact on the Roding Valley community and supported thousands of students in her time here. I am sure that she helped many of your children along their journey and you will join me in wishing her well as she takes up her first headship, which is very well deserved.
All that is left to say is ‘enjoy the summer break’. I hope that you get some time with family and friends or just take a well-deserved rest.
A final farewell
Mrs Sharon Jenner. Headteacher

Message from Miss Reed
I cannot believe we have come to the end of Y7's first year at Roding Valley High School. It has been an absolute pleasure to see them grow and develop throughout the year. I must say that I am so proud of how well they have done this year with their positive attitude and fantastic progress and am looking forward to taking them into Year 8 as their Progress Leader.
As we moved into the final week of the term, we celebrated all of the great achievements students have gained throughout the year across all subject areas.
I want to make a special mention to the following students:

Well done to all of those students who went on the Southend rewards trip. I am sure they had a fantastic day!

Message from Mr Ryan
I can't believe we have made it to the end of Year 8. There have been so many exciting opportunities for the year group to participate in and it has been lovely to take the children to both Manchester and Lincolnshire.
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure to hand out award certificates to the year group and it was lovely to see different students receiving nominations in different subjects, then they normally would. Please click on the link below to see all of the celebrations and awards from our final assembly of the year.
Year 8 Celebration Assembly Summer 2023
I am very proud of the year group as a whole and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the year.
Another highlight for me this year was finding out that year 8 was the best year group for getting involved in Sports' Day this year and a massive well done to all those who participated.
Could I please remind you of our pre-loved Uniform shop where all donations are most welcome.
After the summer holidays we start Year 9, when the year group will make their option choices and need to think about their futures outside of Roding Valley. However, before that happens we have a long summer holiday to enjoy, relax and reset. I look forward to seeing everyone back in school in September.
Mr Ryan

We have seen our students attend the Newsies theatre trip, participated and won awards at the Challenge & Enrichment showcase, competed at Sports Day, participated in a rewards afternoon and celebrated a year's worth of hard work in our end of year celebration assembly – well done to each and every student who has been recognised for their hard work. On a particular note, I would like acknowledge: -
As we move into the new school year, your child's uniform may need adjusting. Many skirts are now too short and shirts too small to tuck in. Please can I remind you about the high expectations that we have around uniform and these must be met when your child returns in September. Our full uniform policy is available on the website should you need further guidance. I would also like to encourage you to donate any pre loved uniform back to the school so that other families can take advantage of a more affordable option.
I would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to all of our students at Roding Valley, but in particular Year 9. I have loved working with each and every student and parents throughout my time as a Year Progress Leader. I will always have fond memories of the three years I have spent with you. I look forward to hearing from colleagues remaining at Roding Valley High School about your successes as you move through your 7-year journey. When we return in September, Ms Wills will be YPL for Year 10. Her email address is rwills@rodingvalley.net Please direct any queries and concerns to her.
We look forward to welcoming all our Year 10's back to school in September. They will remain in their current forms, but will receive a new timetable. Have an enjoyable summer and enjoy spending some quality time together. Stay safe!

Message from Miss Pinches
Well done Year 10 you have finally made it to the last week!
It has been a jam-packed schedule the last few weeks and it has been great to see so much engagement from our students across these opportunities. I have been incredibly impressed with the Year 10 cohort and their attitude towards Careers week, Enterprise day and Sports day. I hope it has been not only an enjoyable but a valuable experience for all students involved.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few staff who have put so much time and effort into these events. Ms Mason our Careers advisor, Mr Patel our Head of Business and Mr Allen our Head of PE. Your effort has been invaluable to our final few weeks and I know students have enjoyed every minute of it. In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.
If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Sixth Form Bulletin No. 37
Sixth Form Bulletin No. 38
Thursday 6th and Monday 17th July saw a change to the Sports Day format at Roding Valley. With some new events added in for students and staff a like over two days of competition. These two days turned out to be a brilliant two days of athletics and inter house competition.
The format of day 1 on Thursday 6th July remained the same as previous years with each year group making their way to PE to complete in the field events (long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin and high jump), the long and middle distance track events (1500m and 800m) and the introduction of the 50m hurdles and 300m/400m sprint events in their morning lessons and then competing in the tug of war in the afternoon.
In each event students are allowed a maximum of two boys and two girls with 10 house points on offer for the winning student in each event.
The afternoons tug of war competition saw combined year group teams battle it out. The eventual winners in a very competitive competition were Hawking who won their first tug of war title.
Day 2 on Monday 17th July saw the sprint athletics programme of 200m, 100m and relays with the whole school attendance on the field. Alongside these events students could also take part in the same activities as last year on the other field such as the darts throw, bean bag toss and welly boot throw but also two new events; the chest push and archery. These seemed to be a hit with both students and staff and a huge amount of points were won from these five events.
Over the two days a total of 31 new Sports Day records were created by our students. Year 7 with something to prove to the school as the new kids on the block created the newest records, with 12 records. Year 9 created 10 new records, with Year 10 and Year 8 creating 5 new records a piece on another record-breaking couple of Sports Days.
The schools Year 12 students are an integral part of each day as they help select the teams for each house in all the events in the weeks leading up to Sports Day and also help officiate, score and record on both days alongside the PE Department. The annual Year 12 relay race to reward the sixth form for their great effort and support on the day was back, with the winners being Murray in a tightly contested race.
Murray once again dominated the other activities that were staffed by other departments from the school, winning the bean bag toss and the darts throw high score and finishing second in the chest push and the welly boot throw. This accrued a huge 180 house points to their sports day total on the day from just these 4 events.
The last event of the day and a big favourite of the students saw the Staff inter house relay race. Excitement was building prior to the day and all afternoon from students and staff a like for this race, and it didn’t disappoint.
This event always catches the student’s imagination as they lined the finishing straight to witness members of staff compete for their house in the final event of the day, with Hawking house led by team captain Mr Jones, continuing the tradition of winning the Roding Valley Staff relay race as they have done in the last two sports days in 2019 and 2022.

The final results were revealed on the day and overall winner of Sports Day 2023 was Hawking, securing their first ever Sports Day title and stopping Churchill’s dominance of the event with a total of 1225 points.
Well done Hawking!
Please see a selection of pictures from some track events, the Welly Wanging and of course the staff relay!
Friday 21st July was a non-uniform day for students who wished to take part. All students that chose to wear non-school uniform made a donation to the charities listed below with a third of the donations going to the PTA, which helps to fund whole school improvements e.g. water fountains for students. The totals will be counted by house leaders and the points will be allocated to the houses accordingly.
Year 12 STEM trip to the Royal Society Summer Exhibition
The Summer Science Exhibition at the Royal Society was an amazing experience for me. I found it extremely exciting and interesting, learning about how real life applications of the topics we learn can help to better healthcare and general quality of life. I found it particularly important as one of the exhibitions was on the biomedical engineering used to help with eye surgery. Optometry is a field I'm looking to go into, so getting the opportunity to attempt "eye surgery" on a 3D printed replica eye was an awe inspiring experience. I came away with so much information that I talked for hours after attempting to fit all the fun stuff from the morning into a conversation with my mum. I'm very glad the school have this as a trip, as I likely wouldn't have been aware of the exhibition if it wasn't for them. I would recommend it to anyone, as it has such a wide range of projects that anyone can find something that will interest them - Nancy Tabram, 12U

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
