Please also note that a further Bank Holiday has been announced to celebrate the King’s Coronation next year, all schools will now be closed on Monday 8th May 2023. This is in addition to the already published term dates for 2022 23.

As always, I thank every parent/carer who has a positive attitude to school attendance as you are making a difference and really supporting your child. As you know, we do not authorise holidays in term time and students should attend school unless they are seriously ill. Students should aim to be in school 100% of the time and we are always on hand to support children with barriers to attendance

As I have stated before, I believe in an inclusive culture and value attendance, behaviour and uniform as key attributes in success. There is clear evidence of the correlation between attendance and achievement; the impact on reading and progress is very stark in the formative years of study as students build skills and knowledge through KS3. It can become even more apparent as students enter GCSE/ Post 16. Few students with attendance below 90%, achieve their potential at GCSE, or achieve grade Bs and above at A level. Attendance at 90%,which may sound good, is actually the equivalent to half a day missed each week. If your child studies a vocational course a few missed sessions can be the difference between pass and fail, merit or distinction, as the course is assessed on an ongoing basis Well done to all the students currently sitting their Pre Public Exams (PPEs) just a reminder that all students have full access to our Revision Resources, which are fully available on our website

Our students do take pride in their school and I again, thank parents for their support with uniform and behaviour. If you wish to check our uniform expectations you can see them here: gender neutral uniform. If you are buying new winter shoes, please check the website for appropriate footwear Students are NOT allowed to wear trainers of any kind. This includes plain black ones

I would like to remind you to ensure that your child travels directly home from school. The station is not a safe place for young people to hang about, especially as it is dark by 4pm. Large groups of teenagers, even if behaving perfectly, can be intimidating to the local community especially the elderly or vulnerable. Please discourage your child from hanging around outside Sainsburys at the end of the day. This is a supermarket where the general public should be able to shop without the interference of large groups of students. Please do not arrange to pick your son or daughter up there. Please use some of the quieter neighbouring streets. Students are always welcome to wait on our school site in the reception area if you have been delayed

We appreciate that Christmas is an exciting time, but it can also be an expensive time for families, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school if you are struggling with uniform or other school costs especially given the rises in the cost of living. Essex County Council have pulled together a special newsletter which gives information on some of the support that is available in Essex to help struggling families. I have been delighted to see the response to our food bank appeal. We have already made one delivery to the Epping Forest Food Bank, we will also be supporting 3Food4U. These are both local community charities.

It was wonderful to also receive a letter of thanks from Councillor Ken Williamson, Chair of Buckhurst Hill Parish Council. A group of Year 7s, supported by Year 12s and Miss Preston attended the community lunch. Our students were excellent ambassadors for the school, working hard to entertain the 100+ guests. Please see media release Everything Epping Forest Read more at http://bit.ly/3AT5Co9 Slideshow of pictures at http://bit.ly/3AJA5Fc

We also recognise that this festive period can be more difficult for some. Please remember that we are here to support you and your children. You may find some helpful information on the website Wellbeing page. Your son/daughter always has access to the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email address. Once again I would encourage you to reach out if you feel we can support you in any way.

I hope that you enjoy the rest of the bulletin and as always, thank you for your continued support of this wonderful school.

Kind regards

Sharon Jenner

Firstly, a huge congratulation for the top 7 students who have received the most Achievement points over the past week. The top 7 are Angel R, Kristiana S, Lilly F, Albie B, Nate H, Lexi T and Walter Z. Bedrock is a platform we use weekly as part of our Literacy Curriculum. Y7 & Y8 Residential:

This is a Polite reminder regarding students borrowing uniform items from the school.

We have a large number of borrowed school uniform items that fails to be returned to the school.

We are aware that from time to time students need to borrow items of uniform from us for a number of varying reasons. We do advise the students at the time of borrowing that the item(s) need to be returned to us at the end of that school day.

As stated in our school policy, failure to do so, may result in a charge to your ParentPay account.

LOST PROPERTY

To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net

We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.

Message from Mr Ryan

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate certain members of the year group for how well they are doing this half term. As you know we ask the students to complete Bedrock for a minimum of 40 minutes a week. Some students are going beyond the 40 minutes and we currently have a competition between students. Aneta C is currently in the lead. Each form will also win a prize at the end of the term based on the amount of time spent on Bedrock.

I also mentioned the fact that students need to be reading at home. I now have a large number of students who have completed their reading passports and I am looking forward to the end of term assembly when I can reward those students who have completed their passports and are continuing to read.

Tomorrow, I have the privilege of taking some students from year 8 to see Back to the Future. Some of us remember thinking that 2015 was far away in the future! Being able to participate in school trips is a privilege and we do take into consideration student's behaviour records before we allow them to go on a trip. It is always necessary to remember that the students are representing the school when they are away. At the end of the year we are taking the students to the annual residential. Please check your emails for information on it.

As normal, if you need to contact me for anything, please don't hesitate.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website

It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1 1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Fazakerley

I can't believe how quickly this year is progressing! It has been filled so far with opportunities, allowing our students to make memories that will last a lifetime. We have plenty more of these to come! The Year 9 students, as always, are continuing to make us proud.

We have had sports leaders, leading some primary school students in a tag rugby tournament, they were role models from the outset. Receiving feedback from the primary school teachers in regards to how well they did and how much this positively impacted the day for their students was brilliant. We have many of these opportunities coming up through the year, if you are interested in becoming a sports leader, please let me or Ms Aston know.

This week we used our rolling Personal Development programme to educate our Year 9 students on the science behind memory, introducing some brilliant revision techniques, linked with memory. We introduced our year 9 students to 3 memory revision techniques; Teach Someone Else, Mnemonic Imagery and The Roman Room. Alongside this we discussed our RVHS revision techniques, it was amazing to see all the students engaging throughout and learning new ways that they can prepare for their upcoming exams, starting on Monday 28th November. Alongside this, we have a brilliant Revision Inter House competition, where students are to submit a photo or video of them using any of the revision techniques or memory techniques we have gone over during our revision session to Ms Larkin (plarkin@rodingvalley.net)

Please can we remind our children the importance of these assessments, showing their class teachers the progress they have made this year and if there are any gaps in their learning that we need to Close The Gap on.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns or queries. (jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net)

Year 10 News

Message from Mr Dobson

Another great week and the Year 10 are making significant progress through their GCSEs.

Since the last bulletin students have had an assembly on British Values are very important. We are dedicated to promoting them within our School community in order to establish a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. British Values underpin what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Britain. They allow us to create environments free from discrimination, intolerance, and hate. They help us to challenge prejudice and stereotyping, whilst strengthening relationships within the community.

As well as actively promoting these values to our students, we also work hard to embed them into student work across all curriculum areas. This ensures our students understand the importance of respect, so they can leave the School fully prepared to live and work in modern Britain as responsible citizens.

British Values are defined as the following:

Democracy

A culture built upon freedom and equality, where everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities.

The rule of law

The need for rules to make a happy, safe and secure environment to live and work.

Individual liberty Protection of your rights and the rights of others around you.

Mutual respect & tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

Understanding that we all don’t share the same beliefs and values. Respecting those values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own onto them.

this week we have had a focus on languages. This has meant that the careers session has been on how the working knowledge of a language can enhance future job prospects.

With the world Cup starting this week there have been lesson in Humanities about Human rights in the middle East and the significance of diversity around the world.

Many people are worrying about how you will cope with the rise in living costs this winter, and beyond.

Please see this link here from Essex for financial help and support available for parents.

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome so many prospective sixth form students to our open evening on Wednesday. The evening was very well attended and we look forward to working with our new incoming cohort over the coming months. Our year 11 students had the opportunity to hear about the courses we offer and receive welcome advice from our experienced subject teachers Here is a link to the presentation shown in the talk from Mrs Jenner, myself and Mr Warry.

Year 11 students will now be considering their subject choices based on the advice and guidance they have received. Here is a link to our prospectus so that students can consult our subject entry requirements and course offerings. Should they have any follow up questions, they are welcome to ask subject teachers or myself for any guidance they might need.

The deadline for applications is the 14th December 2022 and students need to complete our application form here before this date.

Interviews will be arranged for all applicants between February and April and we look forward to discussing their applications with them. Thank you to all those who attended.

Many thanks for the huge number of entries for the recent Art Pumpkin Carving house competition.

Usually we have around 20 entries, but this year we had over 80....and ALL of them were great. Some were really imaginative, some brilliantly carved, some were just absolutely bizarre and scary.

Every single one deserved the house points I've given out, but there were some that stood out and received extra house points.

Here are the chosen individual winning entries. House order based on number of entries:

1. Rendell

2. Hawking 3. Churchill and Pankhurst

5. Murray

Well done everyone! Mr Tisdale

Year 7 & 8 Enterprise Challenge

Students need to create a Christmas chocolate bar that will compete in today's supermarkets. Students need to think about what makes their chocolate unique and what packaging they will use.

Rewards include house points and for the winner a £10 Westfield voucher. Students need to send all entries to jpatel@rodingvalley.net

A big congratulations to all of those that applied to be house captains. I look forward to working with all of the students who were successful in their applications. The house system is getting bigger and more successful every year and I look forward to the contribution that this team and other students in the school are going to make this academic year Mr Warry

Year 9 used their knowledge of photosynthesis in an apprentice style team competition to sell me upgrades to my greenhouse. The winning team was made up of Martyn Leonard, Ava Margetts, and Marmalade Husted-Smith

RVHS Medical Society

On the 11th November, we performed a pluck dissection during Roding Medical Society.

We investigated different sections of the pluck such as, the lungs, heart, trachea and liver. Different sections of the pluck tissue were dissected and tested to see what material floated. We also identified different tissues and muscles within them.

When dissecting the liver, we tested the enzyme present in the liver by placing it into hydrogen peroxide. The bubbles that were produced, we tested with a glowing splint to identify it as oxygen gas produced.

As a concluding section of the dissection, we inflated the lungs of the second pluck we received. As it was inflated, we could see how much the lungs could fill with oxygen.

It was a very educational and interesting experiment that we all enjoyed immensely.

It's been a busy couple of weeks when it comes to revision & study at RVHS.

Our year 9s are about to complete a series of exams we are really looking forward to seeing what they can do!

We re launched our revision and study microsite with our year 9 cohort & they have taken part in a number of workshops to support their memory skills and to practise our RVHS revision techniques

Please click here to visit our revision page that contains revision microsites for all year groups

Last week 20 Year 9 students had a wonderful day out at the Natural History Museum. A joint trip with the STEM team to build their own Mars rovers. Students started with a talk on space exploration and then in teams used lego to build their own rover device. The iPads came out to programme them and they competed to build rovers designed to explore the planets. A wonderful day out and a great opportunity to explore their learning in a new and fun way. Thanks for Ms Harris (STEM coordinator) for joining us!

On Tuesday 22nd November some of our students were preparing for the Bar Mock Trial Heat at Snaresbrook Crown Court to gain insight into the law system.

Students of the Fortnight

On Thursday 20th October the whole school was invited to wear an item of red in order to support the charity ‘Kick out Racism’. It followed a fantastic week of assemblies, led by Tolani and Vienna in Year 13 who talked about Black History Month and certainly gave us plenty to think about as a school community. Our efforts raised £332 which was sent to the charity to help further education in this issue. It will be well used to assist in educating young people about the issues faced and caused by racism in this country. Thank you for your generosity in giving.

British Values

Last week, our year groups experienced an assembly on our 'British Values' Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance, Individual Liberty. We took our students back in time to a time when our British Values were not as present as they are today. Students were taught about the Women's Suffrage movement which resulted in Universal Suffrage being granted in 1928, alongside the famous story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs who were transported to Australia due to campaigning for a fair wage. We look forward to picking up on these themes during our Personal Development sessions.

And the winner is…

Congratulations to Year 8 Art student Victoria Yozoua who has been selected as this year’s winner of the Loughton Town Council 2022 Christmas Card Design competition. Victoria has now been invited to receive her award from the Loughton Town Mayor.

Congratulations!

A pupil is defined by the Government as a ‘persistent absentee’ (PA) when they miss 10% or more schooling across the school year for any reason; this can be authorised or unauthorised absence. This means if a student's attendance is 90% or below they are PA Student 90% is the equivalent to half a day missed each week over a school year!

If you would like further information regarding attendance please see our Attendance Policy here

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
