“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
RVHS Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending Friday 12th June 2020 Message from the Headteacher There are currently many challenges to be overcome and my thoughts are with all in the Roding Valley community who have reached out regarding concerns from the ongoing pandemic. This has affected many of our families in many different ways, suffering loss, financial hardship, job insecurity and general increased anxiety. I appreciate that this is a worrying time as we all try to navigate our way through the complex easing of restrictions from the lockdown and the impact this has on us all. As a constant, our school remains committed to the ongoing education and welfare of all our students. I trust that if an issue is being shared, then we are doing our very best to try and support and help during this time. We have evolved and continually improved the current online provision and structure for students, but recognise that this is never going to be the same experience as attending regular school. However, this future period remains uncertain and the government has asked that we only consider Year 10 and Year 12 for any ‘face to face provision’ and that we cannot at this stage offer any further onsite provision to Years 7 to 9 until September at the earliest. Any physical face-to-face provision is to only supplement the ongoing online curriculum, which is to remain the primary method of teaching and learning. We recognise that to be proactive as a school, given social distancing remaining in force, we must lay the foundations for a blended curriculum. A blended curriculum may involve students being in school only part-time from September. To this end, I am currently investigating the increased purchase of school-based technology and coordinating training for staff in innovative remote practise. They have come a long way in a short period of time and I am incredibly proud of all my staff for the remote opportunities and support they are offering the students during this difficult period. I am delighted that all our students have access to the full curriculum, mental health support and activities, PE challenges, House competitions and now online assemblies; which address current issues affecting teenagers. The level of communication has been very high and resulted in good levels of engagement across the school community. Our aim is to increase the level of video-recorded teaching to all students to accompany their weekly assignments from the 29th June. These recordings of our teachers delivering their own subject offer a chance for our students to understand difficult content, process information and feel supported. These have been very popular with students and do provide some facial engagement with teachers, which also has obvious wellbeing benefits.

We have since closure, delivered live teaching in the Sixth Form; but are now planning to extend to the Year 10’s from the 29th June. We will be providing live lesson etiquette and safeguarding guidance over the next couple of weeks to best prepare our students for this experience. This will lay the foundations for further online delivery if we do move into a blended curriculum in September. We are really looking forward to seeing our Year 10’s and Year 12’s over the next two weeks during our progress and welfare interviews, to which every child in those year groups has been invited. Government restrictions on numbers mean that daily invite/attendance is very limited. Detailed instructions and invites have been sent to the students and parents. Following this, the next phase of their offer on site will include some small-targeted intervention groups to address non-engagement and misconceptions. This will supplement the new offer of access to live lessons, pre-recorded video teaching and on-line clinics, which will remain the primary method of delivery and access for most. Black Lives Matter I am sure you will be aware of the recent events that have taken place as a result of the murder of George Floyd and the global outpouring of grief and anger, which has resulted. Just to be clear, as part of our ethos, Roding Valley High School stands against racism of any kind. As a school, we have endeavoured to develop community values with a focus on tolerance, mutual respect and understanding alongside cultural exchange. Our school Character and Culture programme has been developed and we will continue to evolve to ensure that we learn about the BLM movement and encourage critical thinking and engagement with Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) voices. It is vitally important that the principles of human rights, equity and anti-racism continue to be at the centre of all the work that happens in our school. We recognise wholeheartedly that we can always improve on what we do and we welcome advice and suggestions on how to support BAME members of our school and wider community. Your child may wish to learn more about the social, historical and political context of the Black Lives Matter movement. We have therefore included in this week's Humanities Broadcast the beginning of a series of historical profiles on important people from the BAME community. Further to this - Roding Reads will contain a selection of literature written by BAME authors. We really encourage our students to engage with this. Please do enjoy the rest of the bulletin; it contains lots of key information and ongoing celebration of student achievement. Get training for the Roding Valley Virtual Sports Week starting 22nd June. I think the sun is due to return for the weekend! Stay Safe! Kindest regards Sharon Jenner Headteacher

Why It Is Important To Socialize With Your Friends over an Xbox/PlayStation It is very important during this pandemic to socialise with your friends and not grow distant from them if possible. During this time, it is very easy to feel lonely because you can’t see any of your friends or family members face to face, other than your close family. This means it is very important to speak with your friends most days, or at least try and keep in touch with them if you can. Another reason why it is important to socialise with your friends is because this whole pandemic can be quite traumatising and it is very relaxing and usually calms you down if you speak to other people who are in the same situation.
Congratulations to Abigail, who has been as been making fantastic use of her lockdown time to learn a new skill and make these beautiful cushions. The quality of her needlework is amazing and self-taught.
One of the ways you can do this is to talk to your friends you already know over Xbox/PlayStation or on the phone. Sometimes staying inside all day gets very boring so it is good to find enjoyment somewhere. Other ways are going for a walk, sitting in the garden or doing exercise wherever you can. These are a few of the many reasons why it can be positive if you safely communicate with your friends online. One new thing I enjoy is making bread; I am now Head Baker of the house! I am accessing all the work on Google Classroom and getting through it, then uploading it. I am happy with the constructive feedback that has been given by my teachers, as it tells me what I have done well and how I could improve. I found the subject Romeo & Juliet interesting and challenging. When the time comes, I will be prepared to return to school." We await his recipe for us all to try!

Message from our Year 7 Progress Leader Miss Edwards Welcome back to our final half term of this academic year. I hope you were able to enjoy some time away from our new 'virtual world' over the break and appreciate the glorious weather we have been experiencing. It sure is making this lockdown all the more enjoyable and tolerable. I wanted to thank those of you who took the time to complete the parent survey on our home learning provision. Your feedback has been valuable in guiding us to make some adjustments and improvements to our provisions for our final half term. These home learning provisions will continue for the remainder of this school year. We have some very exciting opportunities coming up that will interest many of our amazing Year 7 students. Applications for House Leader positions will be released very soon. Please keep an eye on your @rodingvalley inbox for further details regarding this exciting opportunity. We are also launching our very first 'Virtual Sports Week' to replace our traditional Sports Day. This will be a week long House competition featuring numerous different challenges to gain valuable House points. Get your House colours ready and your creative hats on. I cannot wait to see the results! Some of our wonderful tutors have wanted to recognise the hard work of their some of their tutees during this difficult time. I would like to congratulate these students on their endeavours to stay engaged and committed to their learning during this unusual time.
7S: Ria Blundell - for her amazing flapjacks recipe (see below and give it a go!) 7X: Ava Coletta, Layla Currell, Lexi Sofocli and Jake Katyal - for their continued hard work. 7T: Luke Smith and Ellie Carter - for working incredibly hard whilst at home. A special mention to Anthony Dean, who has been nominated by Mr O for his exceptional work in computer science. I encourage all of our Year 7 students to continue with their home learning routines in the final 6 weeks of the year. It is very important to keep our minds engaged and active to stay happy and healthy. Please do get in contact with your teachers should you need any assistance with any of your work. Please use your school email accounts or google classroom to make contact. All of the wonderful teachers at Roding Valley are more than happy to reach out and provide that little bit of extra support should it be needed. Please stay active, stay healthy and stay alert. Message from our Year 8 Progress Leader Mr Dobson Thanks to all the Year 8’s for successfully engaging in work after the Half Term break. Also, thank you to the Parents and Carers who have contacted me and the Year 8 team with questions regarding virtual learning, accessing google classroom, the intensity of the work set and how best to support the students learning. A reminder to parents and Carers who have yet to contact the school with questions regarding Home Learning you can email me or the child's tutor and we can quickly and effectively find a solution. Not to use a well-worn motto, but we are all in this together and as a parent myself with four children in the house, I know how difficult it is to juggle working from home and making sure, the children stay on top of their learning. If there are specific curriculum questions then there are contact details for the principal Curriculum Leads in this Bulletin.

Message from our Year 9 Progress Leader Mr Warry I hope you have all had a lovely half term holiday and have enjoyed the weather as much as you can while staying safe. We are not into the final half term of Year 9 and it has been lovely to see that you all have made a positive start to your GCSE studies. Your teachers are working hard to help make this time productive so that you get the best start to your GCSEs as possible. It is really important that you focus on the work being set and keep on top of your studies. It is now clear that we will be following our remote learning provision for the rest of this half term. It is really important to use this time to set out our goals. Year 9’s have moved onto the next stage in their learning journey so it's important that goals are set for what is taken out of this opportunity. I encourage parents to actively discuss aspirations and goals with their children. Where do you see yourself after Year 11? What would you like to gain from GCSEs? What does your 'ideal' results certificate look like? What job would you like to do in the future? What is your goal for this week? Form tutors would have not made several calls home to their tutees. It is really important that students utilise these calls to discuss what students have been struggling with and what help is needed. Tutors can then ask the subject teachers to provide additional support where needed. Can I ask parents to look out for calls coming from private or withheld numbers; it is likely to be your child's form tutor calling. Stay safe, stay well and enjoy the time with your family
Message from our Year 10 Progress Leader Mr Ryan Welcome back after what I hope was a relaxing half term. Although this is a strange time, it is also quite exciting, as we get ready for the end of Year 10 and the beginning of Year 11. With this in mind, I really do need you all to keep up the hard work. I am getting such positive feedback from your teachers and it is great to know that so many of you are engaging with the home learning that is being set. From the 15th June, school will be reopening for 'face to face' interviews where you will be able to speak to a member of staff about any issues you may be having in relation to your studies and we will identify what support we can put in place for you. We are still making plans for seeing you before the end of term. During this half term, we would really be focusing on work experience and your futures after Year 11. Could I ask that if you haven't already, you complete the CV and submit it to the Google Classroom and also complete the 'Virtual Work Experience'. A letter has also been sent out advising your parents of another scheme that you can get involved in to do with careers and choices. This week 8th – 12th June there was a 'Virtual Careers Week’, which was provided via the Careers & Enterprise Company. This was in partnership with the Oak National Academy. They ran a series of workshops and events that our students could take participate in. For those of you still unsure about which path you might take, I hope you found this to be a really good resource. In one weeks’ time, we will be launching the applications for House Leaders. Please keep an eye out for more information to follow in the virtual assembly. I would also like to draw your attention to the house competitions that are running. You can always say that you have represented your house in your CV. It has come to the point of the year where we get ready for Year 11. One of the significant elements of this is the YES prefects and Subject Leaders roles is YES Prefects and Subject Leaders. Please keep your eyes open for further information, which will be coming out soon! I am looking forward to seeing you all. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
