RVHS Bulletin for Weekending 17th July 2020

Page 1

“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending Friday 17th July 2020 Message from the Headteacher I can’t believe that we have reached the final bulletin of the year. It has without a doubt been a difficult year but I can find plenty of positives at this time. Our school community has really pulled together and our students have shown great resilience and high levels of engagement with their continued studies. I think that my staff have risen to the challenge and upskilled themselves in all elements of the ‘google classroom’ and remote learning with students. I am incredibly proud of the continued education provision that we have continued to deliver and how we have adapted in response to the challenges posed. From the numerous emails, I have been receiving I am so pleased that this has been valued by the community that we serve. I appreciate that it has been a challenging time for everyone, homeschooling is not easy at the best of times but especially with the pressures of working from home and caring for others. I am truly grateful for the support and understanding shown by our parents. I am conscious that many families have suffered in many different ways, from personal loss to financial insecurity. Our thoughts are with you all and we hope to be able to offer continued support as the school moves forward. Over the summer we are undertaking some extensive remodeling work on the school site and we are having the Science Block refurbished. This work will extend into the autumn term and will put pressure on classroom space as we return. However, the longer-term benefit to the students will be immense and we will have to work around the logistics for that short period. I am also delighted to inform you that we remain fully staffed for September. I am also very proud that our own Mr. Ibrahim has been award the national Outstanding New Teacher of the year award from Pearson’s. This is a phenomenal achievement but for those who know him it is very well deserved. His impact on Physics here has been outstanding. As I have already communicated we look forward to a full return in September. The school has put in place extensive safety procedures (bubbles) and has had to adapt its procedures and timings of the day to fulfill the current government guidelines. I must point out that September several weeks away and things may change but please be reassured that I will communicate any updates as soon as I am aware. I have today written to each year group separately as they have specific information pertinent to their needs and the letters are linked here: Year 7 Letter

The school will operate on a staggered basis and students will not be allowed to arrive or enter the school site until 5 mins before their allotted arrival time. The school timetable will run like this in September:

Please do enjoy the rest of this bulletin - it is packed with student celebrations and links to key information. Please plan for students to return to school in September 2020 as follows:  Wednesday 2nd September: Staff training - no students  Thursday 3rd September: Year 7 & Year 13 (Year 8, 9, 10 Individual meetings - invite only)  Friday 4th September: Year 7 & Year 13 only (Year 8, 9, 10 Individual meetings - invite only)  Monday 7th September: Year 11 & Year 12 (Year 8, 9, 10 Individual meetings - invite only)  Tuesday 8th September: ALL students full time Please do have a safe and restful summer. Kindest regards Sharon Jenner

We are absolutely delighted to announce that our very own Mr Ibrahim has been awarded the 2020 Award for Outstanding New Teacher of the Year! Well done, we are all so proud of him.

Year 7 Wow, what a year we have had. I cannot believe that we are now at the end of our Year 7 journey and heading into our first summer break. We have shared a brilliant year together, one that I am incredibly proud of. Every single Year 7 student has achieved tremendous things and you should all be very proud of yourselves and how far you have come. I trust that you were all able to watch our end of year celebration assembly and share in each other's successes, just as I was able to. I had such a great time compiling this celebration assembly, as it was proof of all of the hard work that you had done and the great things that you have achieved. Seeing the different departments across the school nominate so many of you was such a positive way to finish our year off. Well done to all of you who were recognised and celebrated throughout the assembly. I would like to also congratulate another group of students who have worked extremely hard during the last few weeks, and were recognised in the recent Challenge and Enrichment virtual showcase. Congratulations to the following students for entering in and winning awards for their efforts;

  

Archie Savage: Informative Award for his prosthetic arm project. Tylan Sami: Imaginative award for his energy-efficient island project. Aiyana Patel: Innovative award for her prosthetic hand project.

You should have recently received communication regarding our return to school in September, including detailed information about how this will work. Individual Progress & Welfare meetings will take place between Thursday 3rd, Friday 4th and Monday 7th September, with a full return to our new Year 8 timetable on Tuesday 8th September. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any queries relating to the return to school in September. On a final note, I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your continued support throughout the last few months, and the past year. It has been brilliant getting to know the families of our RVHS community, and the support they offer is second to none. Have a restful and relaxing summer, enjoy the sunshine, but most of all please stay safe. I look forward to welcoming you all back in September. Miss Edwards – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 Well done to you all for engaging with virtual learning since the lockdown began – you have made Roding Valley and me very proud. Thank you to all the parents and carers who have diligently motivated our Year 8 students to keep focussed, to stay safe and maintain their mental wellbeing. As our young people return to school in September as Year 9 students, things are going to feel strange, but we are going to do everything to help them get back into the routine of school and learning in a classroom. To cope with this 'new normal' many of them will need some additional support and therefore during the summer holiday and all through the new academic year they can use iamnotok@rodingvalley.net if there is anything they are worried about. It’s an email address that will go straight to the safeguarding team in school and someone will respond to them as soon as possible. Please watch our virtual end of Year assembly - you will see the subject nominations, tutor nominations and the winners of the YPL award. Here is the link to it on YouTube https://youtu.be/5cgyv85j0Tc I am looking forward to seeing you all in September – a reminder that parents & carers have received all the information for the return in September. A few standout awards I have decided to include in the bulletin and they are below. Mr Dobson – Year 8 Progress Leader

Message for 8R Hi Everyone, I hope that you are all well. Just to say a few words at the end of the strangest year. It has been so lovely to speak to you on the phone and keep in touch via email. Thank you to all of you who have sent me pics and emails and taken part in the Humanities Broadcast etc. I am so proud to be your tutor and have missed all of you a great deal. Well done for all the motivation and resilience that you have demonstrated over the last term (and before that too), we are hugely proud of all your efforts and successes. I imagine you will all look so different by September ... wow! Year 9! Next academic year is going to be filled with all sorts of great things and I am looking forward to sharing them with you. I know that some of you will be a bit anxious about returning, that is totally understandable, we will have the chance to reconnect with one another and get started on all your new courses. We are all here to support and guide you, if there are things that you are worried about, we can help. You are not alone. Stay safe over the holidays in whatever you are planning to do and have fun. Try to get a decent sleep routine going, drink lots of water and eat fresh food. Not only is that great for your skin, it's great for supporting good mental health and physical wellbeing - keep any good habits that you have developed going! Very excited to see you all Ms Preston :)

Message for 8S To the one and only 8S! It’s been a funny old year and we only made it half way through but even during lockdown you have reminded me why you are one of my best ever tutor groups. Some of you struggled at first but you have now overcome your obstacles. This shows what a resilient and determined group you are. Some of you have been out collecting trash to protect wildlife and keep our lovely forest environment. Thank you. Some of you have produced amazing local area projects. Well done. Some of you have taken up new hobbies. This is what successful people do. Some have lost beloved family members but are still staying strong. You will make them proud. Have a great summer, live for the moment and above all stay safe. I’m looking forward to seeing your faces again. Mrs Barron.

Message for 8W It has been a good academic year. We have had both ups and downs but we will always strive for greatness. 8W has worked hard and developed to be wonderful individuals. Although lockdown has been hard for some, 8W has been positive and developed themselves in wonderful ways. Some have done more reading, helping around the house, running & exercises, baking, painting and keeping in contact with their friends using digital technology. I have enjoyed speaking with parents hearing how they have been so supportive. Many thanks to all of you. May each of you continue to develop yourselves and enjoy the sun. Mr Stewart. If you are going on holiday, please remember to stick to the Government’s guidance with quarantine on your return. Please also note that as a school we have created the following email: iamnotok@rodingvalley.net This email is to be used if you are not feeling ok, you are really struggling or feeling really down, and you would like to reach out to someone for help. There will be a small team of Roding Valley Staff monitoring the email over the summer holidays who will be willing to provide support if you need it. As always, if you have any questions or need any support you can contact me via email. I look forward to seeing you all back in September. Well done and enjoy your well-earned rest! When Creative Writing Club started in September 2019, I was unaware of how many students would want to get involved and of the amazing talent these young writers have. I thought that I would take the opportunity to share this fantastic work with all of our parents and carers and you will see for yourself how imaginative and witty the students of Roding Valley are. They have brightened up my Wednesday lunchtimes with their brilliant ideas and tireless efforts to write intriguing stories for everyone to enjoy. After seven exciting months, with a lot of fantastic creative work produced, we had to leave school due to Coronavirus and I thought Creative Writing Club would have to be put on hold for the time being‌ but even a pandemic will not stop their creative minds! Alongside their schoolwork, students have continued with their writing; emailing work to me and submitting it on our Creative Writing Club Google Classroom and have therefore kept the club alive! Please do use this link to access our booklet and I hope you enjoy the first edition from our Roding Valley Creative Writers and we hope you feel inspired to pick up a pen and have a go yourself!

Message from Humanities As we near the end of what has been the strangest academic year for everyone, I have been thinking about all of the positives that have come from this. Firstly, our Humanities students from Year 7 to Year 12, we are so immensely proud of the resilience, motivation, and efforts to work independently, meet our deadlines, ask for help and support and produce such good quality work - it has been amazing. Students have worked in difficult circumstances but have managed to become more skilled in the use of IT as a learning tool. Secondly, I am hugely proud of the work that the Humanities teaching staff have undertaken, they have all trained and upskilled in the use of ICT and worked hard to offer excellent teaching, learning and feedback using this medium. Finally, to all of the parents who have been so supportive in helping us and the students to carry on and do the summer term justice. I know that there have been times of real stress and difficulty and juggling this with working from home, ICT and home learning, thank you very much. Lots of E-certificates will be winging their way to students from Friday afternoon onwards - students will receive these in their school email accounts. I wish you all a happy & safe summer, we are all really looking forward to seeing everyone in September. Tara Preston Head of Humanities

Hello Everyone, As we embark on the six weeks holiday, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a massive well done- both to students and parents! Home learning has been a completely new experience for everyone- and we’re really proud of how our students adapted during this time. Please do take a moment to look out for some of the excellent home learning pieces that were submitted since March- the quality of these pieces is fantastic. Moving forward, I wanted to let you know that we are going to continue with the use of Google Classroom to set home learning when we are back to school in September. We have seen that Google Classroom is a powerful tool to set homework and provide good quality feedback. Our students can keep themselves organised, and teachers can monitor progress effectively. In September, I will be circulating the updated ‘Home Learning’ booklet, which will contain the updated Google Classroom codes and clear step by step guides on how to access feedback and get the most out of Google Classroom; for both students and parents. We will also endeavour to utilise our new skill set of video recorded teaching and continue to use this feature within the home learning we set in September. We will be using these videos as revision tools- as we have seen the benefits of these for our students. During the summer holidays, teachers will not be setting ‘home learning assignments’ as we have been since March. Instead, some subject areas will provide enrichment material and reading where applicable. We really recognise that our students will need to come back, refreshed and ready for some hard work in September! If your son/daughter wishes to use this time to revise, then we of course support this. All year groups have taken part in a revision workshop this year- some virtual due to the circumstances. If you would like to check out our revision technique templates and step by step guidance, then please click here. Again, I want to thank you for supporting your child with their home learning. We can’t wait to welcome them all back in September and build on some of the independent learning skills they have learnt during this process. Ms Larkin - Assistant Headteacher

Challenge and Enrichment Summer House Competition The challenge is to produce a 500-word essay on life in school after lockdown, which will need to include:

Punctuation: Is it used correctly and have you used a wide range of ambitious punctuation such as semicolons, hyphens etc.?

  

Sentences: Have you used a variety of sentence forms (simple, compound, complex)? Vocabulary: Have you used a wide range of ambitious vocabulary?

Language: Have you included rhetorical and/or creative language devices such as metaphors, similes? All entries should be emailed to Mrs Patel by 4th September. The winner will receive House points and have their essay published in the School Magazine. Good Luck! Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @RVHST&L @rodingvalleyPE @rodingdrama

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
