Message from the Headteacher Dear Parents and carers It’s been another busy couple of weeks at Roding Valley High School. As the half-term break approaches, the Year 11s and 13s are coming to the end of their assessments to support the awarding of the Teacher Assessed Grades’. Our teaching staff have been working hard with the students to ensure that they have all had the opportunity to demonstrate the best of their ability. We have been extremely impressed with the mature and conscientious way that the students have approached these assessments. If the restrictions continue to lift as expected, then both the Year 11 and 13 cohorts will be able to have both their leavers assembly and Prom. We have also been able to have a leavers photo thanks to the photographers’ skill using a green screen; something that we hadn’t expected to be possible! Over the coming weeks, we hope that the weather will improve and that summer will arrive, after the wet weather that we have had. We are also hopeful that restrictions will continue to be lifted, and the students will be able to move around the school to their different lessons; rather than being based in one room. Students must, however, continue to carry out a Lateral Flow Test twice each week on a Sunday and Wednesday to continue to keep our school community as safe as possible. These will continue to be issued to students regularly, as we continue to carry out track and trace if anyone tests positive.

3468pts I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that students should be attending school in full school uniform or if they have PE on a particular day. They should come into school wearing their Roding Valley PE kit - no other sports kit is allowed. Furthermore, students should be wearing black leather shoes and not trainers each day except for their PE day. Please do contact their Year Progress Leader if there is a reason they haven’t got their ‘proper’ school shoes on.
3410pts Over the last few months, the year 9s have been choosing their options and considering the next steps in their 7-year journey at Roding Valley. We will confirm their final choices in the next week, and they will then start these from 14th June. We hope that this will be an exciting time for our Year 9 students, as they embark on their GCSE journey.

This week it has been fantastic to see so many students getting involved in extracurricular activities whether that be in sport, Duke of Edinburgh or other areas. I hope that more opportunities for extracurricular activities will be possible over the coming weeks and that we can give the students further opportunities to take part in the things they enjoy. As ever, please do enjoy browsing through the rest of this Bulletin, to see some of the fantastic activities that our students have been involved in. Have a lovely weekend, Mrs S Jenner - Headteacher
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to Miss Hollis at ahollis@rodingvalley.net

Congratulations to all of the KS3 students that have written about ‘Time Travel’ this week. Thank you to Miss Woods for sharing their work with us and we hope you enjoy reading their creative work!
I was lucky enough to try out one of those new “horseless carriages”. I drove it down Baker Street, and although I received a few odd looks from passers-by, it was a pleasant time. As I was turning the corner, something very peculiar happened. My vehicle sped up, getting faster, faster… my surroundings looked as though they were falling apart; I felt awfully dizzy! Eventually, I slowed down, and Baker Street seemed to piece itself back together. But it didn’t look quite right. It had streets flooded with colourful shops and people with strange, rectangular devices. A woman holding one of these devices approached me. “I love your dress! It’s very vintage,” she remarked. “What do you mean by that?” I replied. “You know, like, old,” she said politely. “Old? Gosh, what year is it?” I asked. “Oh! Um, it’s 2021,” she exclaimed. “I see…” I mumbled. I was extremely confused. What was going on and how was I get back? Ellie Wakinshaw, Year 7
Here I am in my garage beside my marvellous time travelling machine. I'm jubilant and can't wait to step in - what's going to be on the other side. As I step in, WHOOSH! A crescendo of sound enveloped me. Millions of echoes bounce around me and boisterous lights flash in my eyes. Abruptly, the noise stopped and a peculiar looking man in front of me stood with combed over hair which was poufy at the sides. “President Abraham Lincoln. How are you doing?” the man said, “I'm Jonathan G. Nicole, your personal advisor.” Who, I thought. But right then I realised that I had transformed into President Abraham Lincoln. “Why yes I am,” I replied with a hint of authority, “Now tell me what year I’m in.” “Well 14th April 1865, why?” “My goodness, I must get out of here before I’m assassinated!” I screamed. Stepping back into the time travel machine I WHOOSHED back home. Martyn Leonard, Year 7
Dear diary, Today was so electrifying because I went all the way back in the past today about 5558 years ago to 2021. It was astonishing and very amusing. Anyway, let's get through to my truly significant day. It all started when I was working on my new invention. I was trying to make a flying house but it didn't work. I was just about to give up when something extraordinary happened. The machine started to shake and before I knew it I was sucked into the machine. All I saw was black. Nothing else for the last 10 seconds. Then I opened my eyes and saw the strangest thing I have ever seen. It was 1000s of people wearing a weird thing on their face with signs on trees which said ‘Stop the Spread’. What does that mean? I thought to myself. As I slowly turned around, I saw a woman who was 5 times taller than me telling me I need to wear a face mask? So many thoughts were running through my head like what's a face mask? Where do you get a face mask from? Why do I have to put a face mask on? I looked up at her looking stunned by what she said. The tall woman replied there's a virus spreading and it’s very contagious so you need to put it on. She lent me a face mask then walked off with an angry look on her face. I felt terrified so I sat down on the nearest bench to me and wished I could go home. I burst into tears as I tried to look in my jean pocket for a tissue. I didn't find it but found something else and that was a small button. As I pressed it, I was automatically teleported to my home. I was so glad and pleased to be back. I thought I would be stuck there forever. Honey Larke, Year 7
You find a button on a strange metal machine and your curiosity gets the better of you. You press it…but nothing happens. You zone out for a second, then when you come to, you hear something. You look and realize you're not at home… your somewhere else, but where? You look at the newspaper it says “London News 26th June 1946”. The headline reads ‘The War is Over’. You look around and see the British flag everywhere and everything was bright and colourful, but you don't know how to get out. There’s a piece of paper in your hand it reads: “To escape you must learn your lesson. To discovery and fit” You have no idea what this means. You knew you’ll be stuck here forever so you might as well fit in. You went store to store buying items, you enjoyed every moment and you without knowing…you learnt your lesson. The lesson to enjoy being you, but trying out new. Isabelle Davenport, Year 7
Debate Club The Big Debate Club helps young people at home or in class to take part in a fun, guided online debate. It is organised by Smart School Councils, an awardwinning charity helping every child to lead change in their world through democracy. Our aim is to debate as a representative for RVHS. The motion was: Should children be allowed to vote in elections? The quick-fire debate our Year 11's did will be up on
Not Your Homework soon! The results are: A. Yes (40) B. No (39) 'Democracy shouldn’t stop and neither should we.'
I was still not able to sleep; it was a Friday night and 11’oclock. An hour passed and it was midnight and that’s when something strange happened. I was no longer in my bedroom… I was taken to another place… what was happening? It was freezing cold! There was snow and ice everywhere. I headed to a cave to save myself from dying from the blizzard that was happening outside. The cave was dark and cold; all I could hear was the whistle of the wind. The cave seemed quite huge, out of curiosity, I decided to walk further down into the cave. I could no longer hear the whistle of the wind and the daylight seemed to diminish and fade away. Suddenly I heard a loud moan that echoed. What could that be? It sounded like an animal. Unexpectedly a large animal approached me, it was furry and had long horns and a trunk, it looked at me with angry eyes and I told myself it was time to go… Roma Desai, Year 7
Congratulations to Casey Reader in 7 Hydrogen for producing this great piece of independent writing during DEAW! It’s great to see such effort in your descriptive writing.

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week. In school students examined the benefits and reasons why connecting with nature is so good for our mental health and wellbeing. Some of us went for a walk in the forest at the end of the week, we are so very lucky to have both the forest and the nature reserve on our doorstep and I know that many people really appreciate being able to spend time there.
7 Fluorine and Mr Wilson have connected with nature via a sunflower growing competition - we will send some updates as these start to grow!
I hope that you have been able to connect with nature and can continue to do so! It’s so good for our well-being. Please see below a collection of beautiful photos from staff connecting with nature. I’m off to plant some seeds!

Year 7 As we approach the end of another week, we continue to be impressed and proud of Year 7 students who continue to thrive. We have had the pleasure of going into some lessons this week and it is great to see so many students working hard and engaging in their subjects. I would like to give parents and students an advanced notice of Year 7 assessments which will be taking place towards the end of June. More information will go out in due course however these examinations will give us a clear indication of how students have progressed throughout the year. Class teachers will soon begin to share revision lists and materials with students in preparation for revision. Ms Larkin will also be leading a revision skills workshop after half term. Our extra-curricular clubs continue to thrive; it is always great to see Year 7 students taking up these opportunities which are vital in their development through Secondary School. In this morning’s P1 lesson students have been informed of an exciting competition; 'Heroes Stamp Design'. This involves students designing a stamp honouring the heroes that have helped tirelessly throughout the pandemic. The winning eight stamps will then be chosen by a panel of judges and will then be sent to Her Majesty the Queen for approval before it is published. Year 8 Wow, how quickly has this year flown... 1 week to go until we are into our final half term of Year 8! It has been so lovely to see many of our Year 8 students becoming involved in our extra-curricular provisions that have now started up again. We have also had students representing RVHS in both Tennis and Football. Well . all those who have put themselves forward for these opportunities. done to To prepare for a smooth transition into Year 9, we will be assessing all Year 8's to ensure they are placed into the correct ability group for their educational needs. These assessments will take place on Wednesday 23rd to Friday 25th June and will cover English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, RS & MFL (French/Spanish). Please do keep an eye out on the relevant subject Google Classroom pages for revision material, which will be uploaded over the coming week. I'm also really looking forward to our special revision workshop, which will be delivered by Miss Larkin in the first week back after half term. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your support in reinforcing our behavioural expectations with your child. Students, under no circumstances should be putting their hands on another student, spraying water at another student or saying any inappropriate names or comments to anyone that they wouldn't like to be called themselves. We will be taking a zero tolerance approach to anyone found to be doing any of these things; both in lesson and on the playground. Enjoy the half term break, stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you all back at 8.30am on Monday 7th June. Miss Edwards – Year 8 Progress Leader
Year 10 The theme of this week is responsibility and I am incredibly proud to see Year 10 taking on the responsibilities that this year has given them. Showing true determination in talking a difficult year head on. It is important that we all congratulate Year 10s for taking ownership over their learning and progress.
Year 8 Class of the Week
Extra-curricular clubs are beginning to restart which is great to see. These clubs are a fantastic opportunity for students to mix with other Year 10 students and have a time to release built up energies and take their minds off studying for a while. Students have been involved in many things around school including the football club which is great to see. Be sure to check with your teachers and academic mentors when clubs are running. I would like to remind students of our uniform and equipment expectations. We have very high standards at RVHS and continue to ensure all students are presenting themselves perfectly and are carrying all the necessary equipment for the day. I know we are reaching the end of the academic year, but we all need to ensure that we are not letting our high standards slip. Trainers can only be worn with PE kits when students have PE that day, black trainers are NOT an alternative to school shoes. I am also pleased to be launching our year 10 GCSE Revision evening which is designed to help parents support their children through the demands of GCSEs. Please look out for communication regarding this. Mr Warry – Year 10 Progress Leader
Year 11 I can hardly believe that there are only 7 days until Year 11 have their last compulsory day in school. We still have assessments after half term that students may be required to come in for. I need to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support during this assessment period. We couldn't make sure that the students have done as well as they have without you being behind them 100%. If we have loaned a Chromebook, could I ask that these be returned along with their chargers, before half term. I need to remind you of certain dates that are coming up. The last compulsory day at school is Friday 28th May. We then have our Leavers Day Assembly on Tuesday 22nd June followed by Prom, which will be held at Woolston Manor from 6.30pm until 11.30pm. Although, we want to make a big celebration of the fact that Year 11 have made it through, we do still have to take into account that the guidelines might change. I have the following message I would like to share from Ms. Langlet: "Well done to 11C for not giving up and challenging themselves to get higher marks in French and congratulations to Dylan Schroder for being nominated as her Star Student, for working really hard to improve his grade in French” Mr Ryan – Year 11 Progress Leader
A reminder to parents and students of all Year groups. Please remember to check your Google Careers Classes weekly, you will find useful information as well as enrichment to participate in. The new Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel De Souza, has launched a national survey of children called ‘The Big Ask’. This is the largest ever consultation with children aged 4 to 17 in England. It aims to find out children’s concerns and aspirations about the future, so that we can put children at the heart of our country’s recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We have emailed all parents and carers full details of this survey, we would like to ask our parents, and carers to encourage and help our students to take part, the survey should only take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. This is your child’s chance to have their say on the things that matter to them. Your child is able to tell them what their life is like, what they want in the future, and anything they think is holding them back. We have included the Parent information sheet below. To access the survey, please click here. All parents, carers and those working with children are also invited to complete the adult survey, to share their views about the future for children and young people today, and what they think is holding young people back. To access the adult survey, please click here. We have also included a link to Dame Rachel De Souza’s video above. The results from this survey will help the Children’s Commissioner identify the barriers preventing children from reaching their potential, put forward solutions and set ambitious goals for the country to achieve to make the lives of our children better.
1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4 5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/ 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
