“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending Friday 22nd May 2020 Message from the Headteacher I can’t believe that we have reached the end of the half term and on reflection, I am so incredibly proud of how we have all pulled together to further improve the quality of our online provision during this half term. I thank all those parents who responded to our survey and we have already started to make plans to act upon the feedback given. This is unknown territory to all of us and teachers are responding and learning the new technology to offer engaging learning as quickly as they can. However, as you can appreciate often the students are ahead of us! All our home learning resources and guides can be access from the website. I am delighted to review the contents of this bulletin and see the amazing, continued celebration of the progress and effort of our students. I remain so proud of the continued support being offered from both school and home. As you will be aware from the media, and my recent communication dated 13th May 2020, there remains controversy over the government’s plans for the further opening of primary schools. Secondary schools are still waiting further guidance, but are currently being asked by the government: ‘From 1 June 2020, we expect that secondary schools and colleges will be able to offer some face to face contact with Year 10 and Year 12 pupils. This will not be a return to full timetables or pupils back in school or college full time, rather some support to supplement pupils’ remote education.’ (DfE May 2020) We can see a real benefit for our Year 10 and Year 12 students by offering some initial ‘Progress and Welfare’ meetings with school staff, to supplement their continued home learning. These students are expecting to sit their GCSE/A Levels next year and some further direction and intervention at this stage would be valuable. These individual meetings (socially distanced), for students only, would be to further support the direction of their studies, provide an opportunity to address any concerns around their access to home learning and to discuss any welfare issues that may have arisen during this period. I have written to these parents separately, can I ask that they respond to my survey. This will enable us to plan appropriately and safely for student numbers. I cannot stress enough that the safety of my staff and students is my top priority; we will share detailed safety plans and clear expectations with these parents and students prior to their meetings. These will be issued in the week beginning 1st June 2020. These meetings will continue during the two week period from Monday 8th June 2020, we will then review and make plans for any further enhanced provision on the school site for these year groups. This could then include some targeted small group teaching or clinics. I would also stress that any onsite provision is not compulsory and we will be continuing with our online curriculum during this initial phase. Our plans will be dictated by safety first and ‘is it essential?’ However, this is provisional until the government’s updated announcement on the 28th May 2020. Our students in Year 7,8 and 9 will continue with their remote learning, no further plans have been announced by the government at this time.

@rodingvalleyhs I

To further enhance our online teaching and learning provision, we have just launched a fantastic new 'Challenge Yourself', this can be accessed from a button the website. Even more exciting, RVHS now have their very own YouTube channel! You can access the channel by clicking the link. We also have a number of teachers who have created their own subject channels - where video teaching & instruction will be available! These channels are brand new and content is being uploaded as it is created. I am delighted to be able to share with you an exclusive video created by the Epping Forest Youth Councillors and would like to say how proud I am of our students that are serving as Councillors. Monday 25th May marks the start of the half term break. I have asked my staff not to set work during this period to enable everyone to recharge their batteries and hopefully enable some quality family time away from the homeschooling routine. I would like to remind you however, that Miss Dyer is our Safeguarding Lead and will remain available via email should any concerns arise (sdyer@rodingvalley.net). Obviously if it was an emergency, you would call 999. Please do keep safe and well and have a lovely weekend. Mrs. Sharon Jenner - Headteacher

Congratulations to the Year 12 Sociology class, who have been chosen as the ‘Class of the Week’, for their amazing positivity, resilience and level of achievement throughout this challenging time. They are all working brilliantly from home, completing work on time and to an excellent standard. They are demonstrating all of our ARE values. Miss Garip asked her students to write a few sentences on their experiences of online learning, what it has taught them, what new skills they felt they have learnt and how it has changed them for the better. “Online learning has tested my abilities to study independently, and improved the way I approach tasks. It has also meant that my timetable has to be carefully planned, more so than before”. Baxtor Garrod “Online learning has helped me understand my subjects more, and in depth. With a teacher being present, I can ask them questions on homework and the lesson. I feel I am able to manage my time better, as I am giving an hour to my lessons and then a few hours on homework/revision. It just structures my day, which I find very helpful and motivating.” Amber Giddy “Online learning has been really beneficial in being organised and staying on top of workload, it has allowed me to manage my time better and get more work done to the best of my ability. It has made me feel more confident in the work I’m producing as I feel more relaxed and less pressured by teachers to get work done in a shorter time frame.” Joshua Worral “Online learning has been really helpful for me because we can still be talked through the content as it is difficult to teach it to ourselves. It is also helpful so we can discuss the homework and any parts that we don’t understand. The online lessons are making our learning from home a lot less stressful.” Grace Gadeke

Well done to Emma Kutner 9W, Emma has been nominated for her outstanding community spirit by Mrs Walker. Emma has been getting a newspaper for her elderly neighbour, who is 93 years young and delivering it to her daily. Great Job!

Message from Mrs Preston– 8R Form Tutor and Head of Faculty (Humanities) Hi 8R, I hope you are all well and coping with the very different way of living and schooling. I am missing our morning greetings and hello's around school. I hope that you are all managing to get on okay and just wanted to remind you that you can email me if you need help or just want to say hi, I would really appreciate it, it makes my day when I hear from you! Remember, if you are out of your home, to stay 2 metres apart from other people, even your friends, make sure the last 2 months count! Take care and have a safe and happy half term. Ms Preston

This is your opportunity to leave a lasting contribution at RVHS! This is the Roding Valley logo, which you can see has different aspects of our school represented in its design. Epping Forest Bridge

Valley School Colour River Roding

We would really like to have a Humanities faculty logo, which represents us - so the sorts of things that you could include in your design are things that are connected with our subjects:  History / Geography / RE / Politics/ Psychology and Sociology - one symbol for each connected together? We want to use this for all our work / Instagram / Twitter / badges / certificates / stickers and so on, so it will be everywhere! You could work on this in a group so have a go! Your design needs to be 800 pixels by 800 pixels in size (though do not worry if you do not know how to do this, we would still like you to submit your design!)

Please send to Mrs Preston at tpreston@rodingvalley.net

Message for our Year 7 Progress Leader Miss Edwards As this half term draws to a close, I want to congratulate all of our Year 7's for adapting so well to this current climate. Students have continued with their studies in an impressive and enthusiastic manner, and handled themselves brilliantly. Well Done! In recognition of this, I have asked our team of Form tutors to nominate two students in their form who have shown an outstanding commitment to their online learning journey this half term. Well done to each and every one of you. Our NHS Learning Project form competition has now concluded and I would like to congratulate 7Q for taking the honours. They had the highest amount of entries, closely followed by 7W. Well done to all students who submitted tasks celebrating the great work of our NHS. I have again included some of these excellent pieces of work in this bulletin. I look forward to rewarding 7Q's hard work once we are back in school again. I understand how difficult it is with no set routine, and being away from your friends during these uncertain times, so I encourage you all to get in touch with myself or your form tutor at any time should you feel the need to talk to someone. I also encourage parents and carers to contact their child’s Form tutor should they have any queries or concerns at all. As we see some form of normality return to our community, I wish you all a happy and safe half term break, and hope that you can enjoy some family time in the sun during this period. Message for our Year 8 Progress Leader Mr Dobson Just like to say Ramadan Mubarak to many of you in Year 8 and a heartfelt well done to all of you in Year 8 for positively engaging in distant learning. I would also like to say thank you to the tutors and teachers of Year 8 for constantly adapting to the circumstances of distance learning. Displaced learning has evolved enormously since March and every week staff listen to feedback from Parents and Carers in an attempt to fine-tune the provision for Year 8. The tutors of Year 8 have constantly said how their phone calls and email conversations are genuinely positive and that students on a whole have displayed resilience and determination to maintain their learning. As a result of this excellent attitude, the Tutors have come up with some YEAR 8 SUPERSTARS who deserve special mention. This was a difficult choice for me as the list they gave me for the Parent Bulletin was amazingly long. Everyone of the Year group who have positively engaged in their learning during this difficult time is a Superstar. Well done!

8Q: Natalie Moffat – who has been elected to serve in the Epping Forest Youth Council. Her mother said that she has been busy meeting online with the other Youth Councillors

8R: Frank Cullis and Bianca Nedelcu - Who are on the Epping Forest Youth Council and have been so busy with this. So proud of you both!

8S: Jamima Purser and Rosa Marshall - Excellent dedication to learning

8T: Shola Fuller and Evie Tozer - Excellent dedication to learning

Mr Dobson would like Also a special mention to Samuel Shakespeare

Edie Robinson - For putting in lots of effort and hard work to her home learning Sophie Bailey and Awura Duah - For constantly doing great work in maths

8U: Abigail Tew - For her positive attitude during these unprecedented times. She has been planting vegetables in her garden and even shared some useful tips for a rookie such as myself! Well done Abigail! Ella Benjamin - For her amazing dedication to learning. No matter how hard a task is, she is always doing her best to complete it and asks for her help when needed. Keep it up! Robert Davenport - The level of work produced in science is absolutely phenomenal. The amount of detail in each piece of work is great. He even managed to smash the extension task - no sweat. Keep it up!

8V: Connor Hagger - For showing resilience and working extremely hard on his English assignments.

8W: Lennon Coster, Athina Christofi and Skye Waeland - For showing outstanding resilience and perseverance during this difficult period.

8X: Ava Towner and Daniel Carter - For their exceptional work in science and for all the extracurricular activities they are involved in.

For his caring and patience during this challenging time. Here is a 'highlight' he mentioned when M Dobson called home, which Samuel then sent to him. "The bond between me and my brother I feel that our bond has definitely got stronger for a few reasons. One, I have been helping him with his Maths homework and we haven’t argued that much, we have been playing more games together and talking a lot more to each other. Luckily, I have always had a good relationship with Charlie, so this lockdown hasn’t been that difficult.”

Message for our Year 9 Progress Leader Mr Warry We are not coming towards the end of another half term. Next week is your May half term holiday. During this time you will not be set work to complete, it is a great opportunity to spend time with your family and loved ones, get out and do some exercise etc. Please ensure that you are staying active and making the best of this unusual time. It has been lovely to see that some of you have been helping in the local community in every way you can. Some of you have been going to get shopping for your elderly and vulnerable neighbours; some of you have been going out and dropping items to your vulnerable family. You are a credit to the school, your family and the local community. Big shout-out to Emma Kutner in 9W for going above and beyond to support her elderly neighbor who is 93 years young. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask parents to check in with their children and actively discuss the work they are completing. You children would normally have many teachers to seek advice and support from but now that we are operating a virtual school, some may find this difficult. Ask them what they have been doing; what they have enjoyed doing and perhaps what they have struggled with. It is really important for them to make a productive start to their GCSE despite the current situation. Remember you can always email the class teachers or form tutor for extra support if you need it. It has been lovely speaking to all the parents that I have been in contact with and I know that my team of tutors have really enjoyed catching up with their tutees during their wellbeing calls. Stay safe, stay well and I will see you all soon.

Message for our Year 10 Progress Leader Mr Ryan I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well and making the most of the warm weather. Please remember that although you are not physically attending school it is important to keep up with your studies, especially as you are about to embark on year 11 and your GCSEs. How to Log In and See the Work Set  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin  Or you can download the app.  Students can log in with their Gmail account. If this doesn’t work, they can use their student Pin that they were originally given. What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
