Message from the Headteacher Thank you for all your continued support during this very different Spring term. It has been a very positive reopening and our students have been so happy to be back in the classrooms with their teachers. It does seem strange to be finishing for Easter break when we seem to have just returned. However, it is a very timely break for many of our students, especially the younger ones, as they are showing signs of fatigue and some have found the experience of being back on a site with 1500 other people quite overwhelming. Students need to refamiliarise themselves with school routines and the etiquettes of socialising. The vast majority of students have made the transition back to school fairly seamlessly. However, I am aware that this is not the case for everybody. If you do need to access some additional support for your child the Young Minds website has some excellent support and resources. We have also listed a number of useful links on our own website in the wellbeing section here. As Miss Dyer always says in her communication, we are all only an email away, so do not hesitate to contact us if you need help or support with anything. We also have the dedicated email address for students iamnotok@rodingvalley.net. I had the pleasure to attend all the Key Stage 3 Celebration Assemblies this morning to award the Headteacher’s Awards. I was blown away by the sheer number of positive nominations, by subject areas, to celebrate the fabulous work of our students. Our Year Progress Leaders work tirelessly to support and motivate their year groups. It was an incredibly positive start to the day and all the nominations and winners are included in this bulletin. The students were so engaged and involved with their Academic Tutors. Well done to every single student who participated in the assemblies or was awarded! It is wonderful that the school is back open and that the students can now re-engage with their friends but it is also really important that we do not forget that the rest of the community remains in lockdown. The school continues to operate under a full safety COVID plan which is on our website- click here. At this present time, the government has not issued any changes to the ruling around the wearing of face-coverings, so I expect the wearing of face-coverings in classrooms to continue next term. This may change when the Prime Minister makes his next announcement. The students are fully applying themselves to our safety routines in school but unfortunately, we are hearing about incidents out in the community on their travel to and from school. Please discuss with your child that they should not be going to Sainsbury’s (not essential shopping), congregating in groups in the high street or at the

parks. They should only be arriving at school at their appointed arrival time and going straight home at the end of the school day. In the last few days there have been a few very negative messages about the behaviour of our students sent into school and posted onto social media; which is so disappointing given that the overwhelming majority of our students are amazing and just a handful are letting us down. Students who do behave in this way should expect to be severely sanctioned; not only are they bringing the school’s good name into disrepute, but they are breaking the COVID laws and restrictions. In addition, it is worth noting that we have just requested some additional supervision of our children leaving school from the Covid Compliance team working with Epping Forest District council. Our staggered departure times make it very difficult for us to be out in the community in the way that we have in the past. As I have constantly mentioned, I could not be more proud of how well our students coped during the lockdown and their continued engagement with school and their learning. This has stood them in good stead for their future learning and the recent assessments have supported teachers to identify the gaps in knowledge and skills.I am also pleased to report that the majority have maintained good levels of progress through this period of lockdown. The curriculum will be tailored by our experienced Heads of Faculty to facilitate any catch up. I am grateful for your support during this time as the partnership between home and school is vital in your child’s continued progress. We have seen a number of students return having experienced a significant growth spurt! If you have a daughter, please do check that their skirt still falls below the knee. This is a basic uniform expectation. Should you require any financial support in ensuring your child is appropriately dressed for school, please do contact your child’s Year Progress Leader. We will be having a big drive on ensuring all students are wearing appropriate school shoes directly after the Easter break. Trainers are not permitted. Blazers must be worn at all times, including the days when students are permitted to wear their PE kit. I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very safe and restful break over Easter. School returns - Monday 12th April Kind Regards Sharon Jenner

Year 13 Eggcellent Revision Hunt The Sociology and Psychology Year 13 pupils have worked incredibly hard through lockdown and the last three weeks revising for their upcoming exams. They have shown great work ethic and produced fantastic subject knowledge with the standard of exam questions they wrote for each other; hidden in Easter eggs.

The Easter Edition of our Student Magazine is now available on our school website; please do take the time to read as it is filled with some wonderful stories

COVID Testing Students will continue with home testing twice a week through the Easter break and Mr Mammen has sent out full details in the letter of the 19th March 2021. Asymptomatic Home Testing - Gov guidance Any positive cases should be reported to the school via email COVID@rodingvalley.net details sent to all parents by email. Please do note that any positives on a lateral flow home test must be corroborated by a PCR test at a testing centre. You only need to inform us once confirmed. This only applies to students who test positive within 48 hours of today, 26th March 2021. After this date, NHS Track and Trace must be informed. You only need to inform us if your child will be absent at the start of term. What to do if your child tests positive on a lateral flow test within 48 hours of being in school: You must seek a PCR test for your child and the household must isolate at home until the test result is returned. The quickest way to obtain a test is to book a test at your local testing centre https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test. If the PCR test result is positive for COVID19, you must inform the school by email on COVID@rodingvalley.net and we will identify if there are any other individuals within the school community who are impacted by this. You should contact the school by email on COVID@rodingvalley.net between the hours of 9am and 12pm. You must provide the following: 

Name of your child,

Date of symptoms starting

Names of students that are in close friendship groups from outside their classes (but only those they spent time with in school in that immediate 48hour period)

COVID@rodingvalley.net is the only email that we will be accessing regarding positive cases, please do not email individual staff members or the Office as these will not necessarily be picked up in the appropriate time frame necessary. Please do not leave messages on the school phone lines. You can email outside of these times but we will be actioning Track and Trace during the hours of 9am and 12pm. Please do check your emails throughout the holidays, as we may have to contact you if your child is identified as a close contact of a positive case. What to do if your child tests positive for COVID19 on a lateral flow test more than 48 hours after their last day in school 

You must seek a PCR test for your child and the household must isolate at home until the test result is returned.

If the PCR test result is positive for COVID-19, having developed symptoms more than 48 hours since being in school (from Monday 28th March 2021), you must contact NHS Test and Trace and follow the advice given by them: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/ You should only contact the school if your child will be absent, in time for the first day of the new term.

Year 7 It is crazy to think we are ending another full term which has been made up of a large amount of remote learning and then the students returning to us over the past two weeks. I must say, that Year 7 have returned in excellent spirits and it is very clear that they are excited to be back in the classroom learning and seeing their friends. This morning we held our Easter Celebration assembly where a large amount of awards were given out to Year 7 students. A special mention to Oscar Eaton and Jake Bramley who won the Year Progress Leader and Headteacher’s Award. I would also like to congratulate Jessica Fagan for winning the Enrichment Award. Lastly, I would like to wish all Year 7 students and parents a lovely Easter Break and I look forward to seeing them ready for the Summer Term in two weeks’ time.

Miss Reed – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 Wow, what a two weeks it has been. I have been absolutely delighted to have all of our year 8's back in school and learning and laughing as they should be. I have loved talking to many students and finding out how their lockdown experience was, and hearing about all of the amazing alternative learning that took place. Today, I had the opportunity to celebrate the hard work and progress of all the students over the past term, during our Spring term celebration assembly. I was privileged to present subject awards, highest ARE points awards, form tutor awards, YPL award and we were fortunate enough to have Mrs Jenner present the Headteacher’s award to Amy Fjerce. Well done to all the students who were recognised in today’s assembly. Keep up the great work. Also, during today's celebration assembly, we had an Easter egg prize draw. All students who had perfect attendance over the last two weeks were entered, and I drew at random 6 lucky winners. Well done to Elizabeth A, Taiden M, Luke S, Tootsie T, Peaches M & Harvey H for winning a yummy Easter egg. Attendance to school is extremely importance for making good progress, and I encourage all of you to attend school every day during the summer term. I would like to remind parents that all students should be wearing full RVHS PE kit on days when they have PE. This includes white trainer socks and RVHS tracksuit bottoms, leggings or shorts. Students MUST also wear their blazer over the top of their PE kit. Any student who arrives to school without their blazer will receive a 30-minute detention on Friday after school. I would like to wish you all a happy and safe Easter. Take some time to relax, unwind and prepare for a very busy summer term.

Year 8 Easter Eggcellent with Miss Garip Revision Hunt The Year 8 Easter Eggcellent Revision hunt was a hit for our young scholars and philosophers. We have been looking at the teachings of Aristotle and his ‘12 Virtues’. They found many eggs filled with ways we can achieve ‘Eudaimonia’ (flourishing) through our actions and intentions. They showed this to each other through sharing and helping each other find Easter eggs. A special ‘well done’ to William Edwards for his consistent kindness for both peers and teachers alike. William is a generous and an integral member of our class.

Year 9 It's the end of a long Spring Term which has tested us all and brought up many challenges many of us thought we would never have to face. Today we had an excellent celebration assembly where each department and academic mentor nominated students in Year 9 who have made that extra effort during the term. The staff have looked at how the students have handled working from home and the transition into working on the school site again. It was a long assembly which shows how many students in Year 9 have been getting it right. We had 2 very worthy winners of the YPL and Headteacher’s Award, so well done to those two. I think the list of students highlights the significant efforts of the Year group and clearly highlights that RVHS is a great school. Have a great Easter and I look forward to seeing everyone bright and early on April 12th. Stay safe. Mr Dobson – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 10 I am pleased to have been able to hold a celebration assembly with year 10 to mark the end of this term. There have been lots of great achievements this term and I think that is reflected in just how many students were nominated for awards. I want to personally extend my congratulations to every student who has given their all and achieved this term and of course a big thank you to all the parents who have shown lots of support for the school and our community. It is now time for a little rest over the Easter break, time to recharge batteries so that we can come back ready for a very successful summer term.

Happy

I wish you all a happy easter and I look forward to seeing students in person on the first day back!

Easter! Mr Warry – Year 10 Progress Leader

Year 11 I know that I say this regularly but again I can't tell you how pleased I am with the year group. They have really done fantastically well during this first week of the PPEs. There is such a mature attitude surrounding these tests and this proves how seriously they are taking them. I would like to thank you for your support during this time. The year group will have to continue revising over the holidays as we have two weeks of exams following the holidays. The year group will continue to arrive at the P.E. gate and line up for their exams when asked. We will still be asking students to leave on either Monday or Tuesday when they would normally have P.E. (at 2 PM) There is also no intervention/period 7 for year 11. The year group will leave at 3PM apart from Friday when they have assembly. Although there is uncertainty surrounding the end of the year I do want to make sure that we are all aware that it is normal school as usual in preparation for any further assessment. Students will still be expected to be in full uniform. If there are any issues with this, please let me know. Again, I can't tell you how pleased I am with the way the students have carried themselves since we have returned. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate a number of students. Sam P and Daniel B have both been mentioned as being excellent Historians. I am also particularly proud of Ella F who has been accepted by Emmanuel College, to take part in an outreach program. Please keep safe over the Easter break and I look forward to seeing you all in the Summer term. Mr Ryan – Year 11 Progress Leader

RVHS Careers I hope you all enjoyed participating in National Careers Week. Year 11 it is not too late to apply for College. If you are unsure of what college place you want to apply for then please get in touch for some support. Students and Parents, if you want any information about Post 16 or Post 18 options then please email me dmason@rodingvalley.net Students remember to check out your Google Careers Classrooms and follow the department on twitter @RVHS_careers

Easter Revision Please remember there will be some revision session offered during the first week of the Easter Holiday. These sessions will be predominantly online with a limited number being invited on some days for a targeted session

Return of Revision Guides to RVHS (Year 11) We would be extremely grateful if students could donate their revision guide pack back to RVHS to use with future GCSE students. The guide pack was handed out before February half term and will hopefully support our Year 11s throughout their assessment process. Before their last day, boxes will be left out on the back playground for students to drop guides into for us to then distribute to our Year 10 students. On top of this, if your son/daughter has any subject course guides that may be of help to future GCSE students, then please donate these too! This would help enormously- Thank you.

All other absences not related to Covid-19 will be recorded in the normal way (Please refer to our Attendance Policy here for further information on attendance codes etc.).

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/  14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
