RVHS Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending Friday 26th June 2020 Message from the Headteacher 2170

Dear all in the Roding Valley High School Community, I trust that everyone is keeping well and managing to enjoy some of the sunshine safely. Earlier this week, I wrote to parents regarding our enhanced teaching strategy that will be in operation from the 29th June. If you missed my letter, it can be accessed via the website - current parents - current letters or by clicking these links Years 7-9 Years 10 /12. This letter details our commitment to the students at this time. This is in addition to the welfare calls, assemblies, reading challenges, well-being Wednesday and other enrichment curriculum opportunities available. If your child is having any issues with their home learning then please do access the link below which include Miss Larkin’s Top Tips! 

Five top tips for Home Learning

All home learning materials can be found on our website Home learning resources during COVID-19 closure.

We remain totally committed to the education and welfare of all our students and please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further support. I am aware that some families are struggling during this current time and we are always here to help or advise as best we can. The government has updated its COVID-19 guidance for parents and carers for young people working online: support for parents and carers to keep children safe online. The guidance, which provides advice and information to help parents and carers to keep children safe online during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, now includes information on Apps to help children stay safe. Please also see our Keeping children safe page on website Please can I also reissue the link to the information issued to Year 11 students who have applied to our sixth form Year 11 April 2020. We will be contacting year 11 parents next week to invite all sixth form applicants to engage with our Year 11-12 Transition Week, which will be taking place week commencing 6th July. This will include online subject Q and A sessions throughout the week and will culminate in a live broadcast from Ms. Wheaton, Director of Sixth Form to introduce to students more fully to the sixth form. We look forward to seeing year 11 applicants engage with this.

In the last week, many of our year 13s will have finalised their university plans, by picking their firm and insurance choices. The information has been directly shared with them about this process, applications to student finance and student accommodation. We wish them well as they look forward to pursuing their future pathways and remind them that the sixth form team continues to be here to support them with any questions they might have. Furthermore, students who are applying to the world of work have been contacted by Mrs. Mason who continues to share opportunities with them on a weekly basis. For these students, we remain only an email away. This week’s assembly was all about careers and future aspirations. I do hope you managed to view it. If you missed it, you can find it here. It has been wonderful to see our Year 10s and 12s on the school site and we all look forward to welcoming all year groups back in September. We have not yet received any guidance from the government regarding the actual practicalities of this, notably, whether they will attend on a rota or not. However, if social distancing remains in force, then the school site would not be able to accommodate all the students at one time. Obviously, the reduction to 1 metre with mitigation would support increased provision. I will update you as soon as I am aware of any further updates and thank you for your continued support at this time. During the summer we are planning on having some refurbishment work completed in our Science block and the bridge over Alderton Hill, which connects the two sites, has to be replaced, this is currently with local planning. I am intending to use the funds accumulated from the School 100 club to put towards an outside canopy for our students. This will create a large, attractive outside area that is both protected from the rain and the sun and will provide much needed outside shelter for the students. I am sure that you will agree that this is a very worthwhile project and excellent use of the funds. I would like to re-energise the school 100 Club and save towards other similar projects for the benefit of all students. Please click on this link if you would like to join our Club 100 I am delighted to see so many students and staff taking part in the RVHS Sports Week - it has now been extended due to popular demand. Click here to get involved RVHS Sports Week. As I am writing this, I believe Hawking House are currently dominating 4 of the 7 events, but all can change as this whole school event continues. Such a lovely way to bring the community together. You may be aware that at this time of year we normally like to share an opportunity to be able to celebrate the fantastic work of our Year 11 and Year 13 Art and Photography GCSE and A-Level students. Not wanting to allow the current situation to prevent this from happening, we have created a ‘virtual gallery.’ Please look here. Once again, this year we are very proud of the creativity, hard work and talent of our Creative Arts students. Please do follow us on our social media sites - twitter and Instagram and of course make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel. It’s a great way to connect with the Roding Valley High School community. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin, I am always so proud of our students’ achievements and continued hard work. Kindest regards and stay safe, Sharon Jenner Headteacher

What is Your Vision for the World after Coronavirus? The COVID-19 pandemic raises many questions about how our societies are organised, and how public health challenges can be tackled. As governments struggle to protect lives and keep our economies afloat, ambitious ideas that once seemed improbable have suddenly become surprisingly plausible. Now that everyone is thinking about what our postlockdown future might look like. OpenDemocracy and UCL are teaming up to invite young people to have a say. We want to find and shout about the best ideas from the next generation for what should come next. What might democracy look like as countries emerge from lockdown? How will public health change as a result of this global pandemic? What lessons from history have we forgotten that might guide how the world recovers? How will our societies and cultures respond to this global crisis and its aftermath? This competition is open to all students (aged 14 and up) to share their vision of the future. Entrants can submit either a written article, short video or image that describes their vision for the world after the coronavirus crisis has passed. Only one entry per person. If you submit more than one entry, only the first entry submitted will be accepted. Winners and Prizes Two winners will be selected from the entries in all three categories; a grand prize-winner selected by the judges and a People’s Choice winner selected by public vote. There will be prizes for three runners-up chosen as outstanding entries by the judges. The grand prize includes £200 in book vouchers and a bespoke training opportunity with either open Democracy or UCL that may take the form of a mini-fellowship, work experience, or placement in line with the winner’s area of interest. The People’s Choice winner will receive £100 in book vouchers and runners-up will receive £50 in book vouchers. All winners and runners-up will receive a personal mentoring/career advice session with one of our expert judges and their entries will be published on OpenDemocracy’s website. Important Dates  The competition opens on 15 June 2020.  The competition and public vote will close at 23:59 UTC on 10 July 2020, so make sure to share your entry and get your friends and family voting! Any entries after this date will not be accepted.  The winners will be announced on 2 August 2020. If you would like to take part in this competition, please submit your entries to https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/world-after-covid/

'Thought of the Week' The stress and boredom lockdown is creating for us is becoming too much to bear. We are spending way too much time indoors longing for the busy days of normality. Having the time to reflect on the days before lockdown I begin to understand how much football means to me. The shocking news about George Floyd and the demonstrations that followed highlight how something like football can help unite us as people regardless of how you look or the colour of your skin. It is a way for people to escape from their problems. There are many things I’m missing in football such as the feeling you get when you have the ball at your feet breezing past players as if they are not there. When you score the winning goal for your team, or when you stop the ball off the line to prevent your opponents from scoring. The adrenaline rush when you play against your rivals. These are just some of the feelings you feel when out on the football pitch. Whilst lockdown continues I will be out in the garden practising as best I can, awaiting the day when lockdown ends.

Please do check this new feature on the School website to get involved in any of the activities. If you would like more information, please email Mrs Patel or Ms Garip!

All issues of our weekly newsletter ‘Roding Reads’ on all things reading are now available on our School Website.

Message from our Year 7 Progress Leader Miss Edwards As we approach the final three weeks of year 7, I find myself reflecting upon the incredible start to the high school journey that we have had. What a year it has been! Over the last few days, I've been putting together our very exciting end of year celebration assembly, which has highlighted the many successes and achievements that we have had as a year group. I can't wait for you all to get the chance to watch this and acknowledge the year that was. Please look out for this over the coming weeks, together with some other exciting celebration presentations. As we go into our final few weeks of online learning, and in fact of our year 7 journey, it is ever so important to stay engaged and connected with your learning. Our amazing teachers are continuing to set weekly assignments for you, which will now be accompanied by instructional videos for you to watch. This should make your weekly work that little bit more exciting and make you feel just that little bit more connected. Finish your year 7 learning journey on a high by getting all of your outstanding work completed and submitted. Please continue to communicate directly with your subject teachers should you need any help or guidance with any of your assignments. I have watched with pleasure your entries into the 2020 Sports Day Week House competition. Many of you have earnt valuable points for your house and I congratulate every one of you for getting involved. Results of this competition, together with the final house standings will be announced at a later stage. Come on Churchill! In previous bulletins, I've talked about House Leader applications for next year's Student Leadership team. Please keep an eye on your inbox for further information on this to be released next week. I encourage all of you to get involved in this process and put yourself forward for these exciting leadership opportunities. Our hard working form tutors will be continuing to make contact with all of their tutees over the next few weeks. Please expect these calls to come from withheld numbers. Many tutors are leaving voicemail messages with times that they will call you back, or sending you an email with a similar message. Please continue to check these portals so you don't miss your chance at chatting with your child’s form tutor. From all the feedback I have received, these phone calls have made a positive impact on the attitude to many of our students, and that our tutors really enjoy getting to say hello to and catch up with their tutees. Please continue to stay alert, stay safe and enjoy this lovely sunshine!

Message from our Year 8 Progress Leader Mr Dobson Another thank you to all the parents, carers and students who are continuing to engage in distant learning. Even though the weather has been extremely hot I have been constantly impressed by how the Year 8 students have engaged with their teachers. A lot of information has been sent out regarding how the next three week will develop with distant learning - once again, if you have any further queries you can contact me at cdobson@rodingvalley.net or you can email your child's tutor. All this information can be found in the Parent Bulletin. I do hope the Year 8 students get involved in the virtual sports day and look out for our end of term celebration assembly with subjects nomination, character and culture nominations and of course YPL and Head teacher swards. Please stay safe and enjoy the sunshine whilst it lasts. Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @RVHST&L @rodingvalleyPE @rodingdrama

Message from our Year 9 Progress Leader Mr Warry I want to say a big well done to all year 9s on making a positive start to their GCSE. It has been nice hearing from some of you about how much you have been enjoying your work. I would also like to thank parents and carers for their commitment to the education of their children. It has been really positive speaking to so many of you and hearing how you are getting on with home schooling. It has been nice to see so many of you actively utilising all of the resources and provision teachers are producing at RVHS. Do remember that if you need the support then you should contact your individual teachers via email. If you need additional or further assistance then please do not hesitate to contact me via email. We are doing everything we can to ensure that students are making as much progress as possible. Please also look out for and get involved with our Sports Week activities. They have been very fun and accessible for all so it would be nice to see lots of year 9s taking part! I am personally really keen for Rendell to win this year! I think we can do it! Get behind your House and take part in the challenges!

Message from our Year 10 Progress Leader Mr Ryan It has been an absolute pleasure seeing you all over the past week and a half. You all seemed to be so rested and ready to meet your teachers. I am aware that it was quite a strange experience but this is what we have had to put in place to ensure your safety. After such a positive round of face to face interviews we now come to the third phase of reintegration to school. This involves; on-line lessons (the Science department are already delivering these), master-classes and some students being invited in for selected lessons. Please check your emails to ensure that you don't miss anything. I do need to remind you that during the next phase we are expecting you to behave in an exemplary manner. For those of you coming into school, the usual school rules still apply. We have also come to the point in the year where I ask for applications for you to be YES prefects and Subject prefects. This is a really good opportunity for you to get involved in School life and is also excellent for your CVs those students who are successful will have something else to make them stand out. More information is to follow including information on how to apply. I expect you all to put your hats in the ring as this really is an exciting opportunity. As always keep safe and keep in touch.

Message from our Year 11 Progress Leader Miss Reed Firstly, I hope you are all keeping well and have been engaging with your Sixth Form Work Booklets if you are returning to us at Roding Valley. If you are still unsure of your plan moving forwards, please feel free to email me and we can discuss.

Year 11 Prom We regret to inform you that sadly in light of the current restrictions in the UK that the decision has been made by the venue that this memorable event scheduled for the 1st July will not go ahead. Any further information regarding this will be sent out in a letter to parents.

Year 11 Hoodie's There will be a Y11 Leavers Hoodie on offer to all students who would like to purchase one directly from Forest Casual. A letter will go out in due course when these are ready to purchase.

Year 11 Year Book We are currently finalising the Y11 Year Book; a letter will be sent out in due course with regards to purchasing this which we anticipate to be ready for collection on results day in August. Lastly, I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I am still available via email should Y11 have any questions or queries. Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @RVHST&L @rodingvalleyPE @rodingdrama

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.
