Message from the Headteacher Dear parents and carers, I trust that everyone in the school community is keeping well and coping in this difficult lockdown time. Please do remember that the school is always here to help those students and their immediate families who are experiencing challenges during this time. Please do make contact with us if you feel that we can offer you any support. We have a dedicated email address for students, iamnotok@rodingvally.net, but both students and parents/carers can contact any member of staff they feel comfortable with at any time. On a positive note, the majority of our students are coping well and continuing to engage with the school in a meaningful and effective way. I would like to thank parents and carers for their continued support, as it is not easy with teenagers at home full time. I think we all accept that remote learning is not a replacement for all that school offers, both socially and academically, but I am delighted that in the recent parent survey, 87% of you graded our provision as good or excellent. We are all in this together and our goal is to continue to educate as best we can, albeit at distance, offer support and encourage motivation in continued learning. We will act on the feedback given, as my aim is always to continue to improve to be the best that we can be. Please do read Miss Larkin’s Home Learning Update, we are now exploring the use of ‘live worksheets’. This, amongst many other things, is one strategy that we are using across the school during our live lessons to be able to effectively monitor engagement and give individualised feedback during the lesson to keep students on track. I do think that children are getting tired as we are now four weeks into this lockdown, I know my daughter is! It is important to take stock to improve mental wellbeing and ensure adequate breaks from screen time. Please do encourage your children to take breaks and exercise, please do engage with our Wellbeing Wednesday emails - offering a variety of suggestions. I am really looking forward to next week with the whole school participating in ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ activity Day 3rd February. Please visit our microsite for all the information you will need, it looks like a fabulous day. Assistant Headteacher, Tom Price, should be contacted if any concerns tprice@rodingvalley.net

I hope that all Year 9 parents have had the opportunity to review our Options webpage and were able to find all the information that they needed. Last night we also continued with our first remote ‘Careers Festival’- I thought it was excellent and if you did miss it, then please do take the time to review. There are some excellent opportunities promoted and advice offered by key employers. Year 9 students have been in ‘GCSE style’ taster sessions this week, as ever, their behaviour and attitude was superb. Students all have a Careers Google Classroom, which they can visit to look through and interact with a variety of careers and Options based information. Please do contact our careers advisor, Donna Mason, dmason@rodingvalley.net for further information or support. We have shared the government’s consultation document regarding Year 11 and Year 13 summer exams with the parents, but please be reassured that we have responded in the best interests of our students. I am delighted to hear about the high levels of engagement and continued motivation from these students and am very proud of the way they have conducted themselves through this uncertain time. We plan to share a more certain pathway with them as soon as we can. Please do note that the school closes for half term on Friday 12th February. Onsite provision for our vulnerable/ keyworker students and remote learning will start again on Tuesday 23rd February. Monday 22nd February is a CLP Trust Training Day for all staff in the Trust. I appreciate that Boris Johnson, Prime Minister, has said that schools may start to reopen for more students from 8th March but I would stress that this is the earliest date that schools could potentially start to invite students back. We are all hopeful that lockdown can be lifted soon but only when it is safe to do so. This bulletin is a celebration of so much great effort and achievement from so many different aged students. Roding Valley High School is a great community and I am proud to be the Headteacher. Kindest regards Sharon Jenner
KS4 Options Pathways to Success Our Year 9 students can now log on to our Virtual Options microsite via our school website and view details on the entire Options process, videos & information about all of the courses on offer to them for their KS4 journey. Please remember that the deadline submitting your KS4 Course Selection Form is

Short Story by Ruby Mace Year 8 He whispered under its breath, “The bite is a gift!” Tomorrow was the soccer tryouts! Pete had been working towards these try-outs all summer! He was hoping, praying that all the early morning and late-night training sessions, the affliction upon himself would all pay off. Having an early night would make him more invigorated for the morning. Just as he was settling down, there was a pummel on the door. Pete jumped out of his skin, he wasn’t expecting anyone. He grabbed the baseball bat besides his bed and stealthy stepped down the stairs to the front door. His heartfelt like a train pounding down the tracks. As he locomoted towards the door he glanced through the peephole and there stood a peculiar dark figure. His heart sank to his stomach as the obscure figure banged on the door uncontrollably. So, he took the chance. He turned the handle steadily and jolted back as the door opened. What he saw was catastrophic, outrageous. There it stood, an animal looking beast. This brute had big broad shoulders and colossal red, illuminating eyes. It glared into his soul. The only time the creature would blink was when it needed to adjust its eyes. You could have heard a pin drop. Just as he was about to slam the door in front of the creature's face, it pushed the door back into Pete. Pete gripped the bat with his clammy hands and took a great big swing at the creature's head. Bang! Crash! It fell into the antique cupboard straight onto the floor. This was Pete's chance to run for his life! As he reached the top of the vertiginous stairs, the red-eyed demon jumped up onto all fours and growled showing his mammoth, sharp canines, also known as fangs. As Pete glanced back, he locked eyes with it. A nefarious grin scared its face as it crept up the stairs ready to hunt down its next victim with its super smelling ability. Pete's heart was pounding; sweat was beginning to form on his forehead. What was going on, what was that thing!? He ran around the house like it was a maze, endless twists and turns. The savage beast was getting closer now so he took a chance and ran into his mum's dressing room and slipped into the cupboard. The house screamed silence again; all you could hear was the dog-like panting of the predator pacing in and out of every room. What felt like an eternity later, the ferocious creature crawled into the room where Pete was hiding. He had to hold his hand over his mouth to stop the uncontrollable breathing. The dog-like creature rounded the room, ready to pounce at any moment, looking for Pete. Just as the monster was going to leave the room and carry out his dog-like sense of smell to the destination of the warm red luscious blood of his next casualty, it peered back into the room and studied it like a book. It took a sniff and then it clicked; it started sprinting toward the cupboard, tearing it open and at that moment, Pete let out a massive wail of terror. The creature's colossal fangs dived into Pete's skin and after that, Pete was unconscious. As the untamed creature ran out of the room with blood dripping from its fangs, it turned into the human form of Pete’s best friend Derek. It was a werewolf, not your regular werewolf, it was an Alfa - he was the biggest and baddest of them all. As the werewolf looked back at the senseless teenager, he whispered under his breath “The bite is a gift!”

With Ms Preston
This week to promote both the welling of both our students, staff and their families, Ms Preston has some top tips on the benefits of Vitamin D.
What does Vitamin D do?
Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
One of vitamin D’s most important roles is keeping your immune system strong so you are able to fight off viruses and bacteria that cause illness.
Excessive fatigue and tiredness may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency.
Hair loss may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency in female-pattern hair loss or the autoimmune condition alopecia areata.
There is a link between chronic pain and low blood levels of vitamin D, which may be due to the interaction between the vitamin and pain-sensing nerve cells.
Low blood levels of vitamin D may be a cause or contributing factor to bone pain and lower back pain. Depression is associated with low vitamin D levels Inadequate vitamin D levels may lead to poor wound healing following surgery, injury or infection. A diagnosis of low bone mineral density may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. Getting enough of this vitamin is important for preserving bone mass, as you get older.
Benefits of Vitamin D Your skin can produce large quantities of vitamin D on its own when exposed to the sun’s UV-B rays. However, many factors affect this process.
Fatty fish and seafood are among the foods highest in vitamin D, though exact vitamin content may vary depending on the type and source of the food in question.
Much like humans, mushrooms produce vitamin D when exposed to UV light. Wild mushrooms — or commercially grown ones treated with UV light — have the greatest vitamin D levels.
Free-range and pastured eggs are a great source of vitamin D, as chickens with access to sunlight produce more vitamin D in their eggs than those that remain indoors.
Vitamin D is often added to food staples — such as milk and breakfast cereals — to increase intake of this nutrient.
Supplements are often needed if you do not obtain enough vitamin D from food or sunlight. Having your vitamin D levels checked before supplementing is the best way to pick the appropriate dose.
Hello Parents & Carers! Once again, it has been a busy two weeks in the world of remote teaching & Learning. First of all, thank you for completing our Parent Survey on remote teaching & welfare at RVHS. We were extremely happy with the amazing results and abundance of excellent feedback that you gave us! We cannot thank you enough for the support you have shown our teaching and support staff. We were pleased to be able to say that 87% of you have regarded our provision as either good or excellent. We also really appreciate the constructive comments given by parents. Hopefully you have been contacted this week regarding your constructive feedback and I am hopeful that our provision will continue to improve and evolve over the coming weeks. Many of our teachers have been trying out the use of 'live worksheets' during live lessons and hopefully, your son/daughter has accessed one already. We have noted that whilst many students have got to grips with this, some are still struggling to access and use them. I have put together a short explanatory video to show students & parents how to access these during a live lesson. A live worksheet is set by the lead teacher of the lesson and enables students to type their work into the worksheet, meaning that teachers can see their work in real-time! It means that teachers can give individualised feedback and support. Our LSA’s have also received training in this and are here to offer some excellent help for any students that need it too. Please click above for the video
Also, I will be getting in touch with all parents next week to announce that Years 7, 8 and 9 will all be invited to a live enrichment lesson each week that will be added to their timetables. This timetable addition will be explained next week. Like all other lessons, this will appear as a calendar invite during a slot that doesn't already have live provision there. This enrichment slot will be delivered by a number of staff from across the school and is there to provide some learning outside of the standard curriculum. We really hope this will keep students engaged over the coming weeks. As ever, this bulletin contains some fantastic examples of student home learning. Please do take some time to see all of this on display. Have a lovely weekend, Ms. Larkin

Year 7 This week has been another positive week for our Y7 students who are continuing to thrive in this different way of learning. I would like to say how proud I am of how well they have all adapted and coped since joining us in September and it is fantastic to see on a weekly basis so many of them being commended for their efforts and hard work. Every Monday, we have a Year 7 assembly where I provide notices and updates to students; as well as highlight students who have been nominated by their teachers. It really is a positive way to start the week. The link to access the assembly should show on your son/daughters Google Calendar, however if there are any problems with this, do let me know.
Wellbeing Wednesday Next week we are holding our well-being day where students will follow a different timetable for this day only, Wednesday 3rd February. Students will have a form time from 9am 9.30am where they will be able to join the Google Meet and discuss the outline of the day. The day also consists of a time slot for exercise led by the PE department and a cooking slot. I am really looking forward to seeing our Year 7 students get fully involved with this day. Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that if you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me at hreed@rodingvalley.net Miss Reed – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 Yet another fortnight has flown by since my last communication and what a busy one it has been. In our assembly on Monday, I celebrated a long list of student achievements; which is always one of the highlights of my week. I have included those celebrations further down in my communication. This week we celebrated literacy week; which saw our year 8's engage in some extended reading and writing tasks during their live lessons. The feedback I have been receiving on the work that was produced has been amazing. Well done to all of you who fully engaged in this year’s Literacy week. I would like to thank those of you who completed the parent survey about our virtual learning provision. We appreciate all of the feedback, and use this to continue to grow and evolve our offering. In this survey, many parents enquired about the possibility of extension or enrichment tasks and activities. I would like to remind you all about the numerous house activities on offer. I encourage all of you to get involved in as many as you can. I have linked the website for you, which outlines all the competitions currently on offer. Many of you also discussed the amount of live lessons & self-directed study hours; some thought there were too little, whilst others said there were too many. The School believes that for many reasons, including wellbeing, productivity, and engagement, it is best to have this mixture of live and self-directed hours. The children are getting a full day of lessons - just because the lessons are not in 'real-time' does not mean they are not getting their full learning provision. Year 8 have assignments to do in their self-directed hours and these hours are important to allow students to complete tasks properly, get feedback and progress. I look forward to celebrating 'Wellbeing Wednesday' next week, kicking off with form time with our amazing team of academic mentors. Please look out for an invite to your 'virtual' form time in your Gmail calendars, and make sure you join this session on time; 9am on Wednesday. Following this will be a series of engaging, fun and creative sessions to give us all a break from the screen and help unwind a little from all that hard work we have been doing. Do not forget to purchase the ingredients for the cooking sessions! With wellbeing in mind, I do want to draw your attention to the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email address, which is a service students can use to reach out if they feel they could use some extra support or just want someone to talk to. Alternatively, please feel free to reach out to any of the members of our team and we would be more than happy to help in any way they can. Please continue to keep in touch with your child’s Academic Mentor and myself. We are only even an email away, and will help in any way possible. As always, I hope that you are all keeping safe and well in these difficult times.

Year 9 Another week in lockdown and another week of outstanding contributions from our Year 9s. During the last 2 weeks, we have communicated with parents and carers about the options process and parents evening/day. As part of the options process, we have put on some taster sessions for the students to introduce them to GCSE courses, which . them and you to make informed choices when choosing their options. I have been very pleased with the will enable response from Year 9 and the etiquette shown in all live lessons. All parents and careers received a letter detailing the pathway of their child and the address for the website, which gives all the information, needed to make the right decision. Thank you to all those parents/carers who have contacted staff at the school for their opinions and views of the overall process. If you would like to see the options assembly, it is in our careers google classroom, which all Year 9 students have joined. Please click here to view. Please ask your child to direct you to the Careers google classroom it is really worth using. The Parent's Evening is almost upon us and you have all been sent invitations with the school iCloud details. Since we are in a global pandemic we can't all meet up like the good old days but will have to meet through the computer. The letter tells you how to make an appointment and what to do if you need advice and assistance. As always the process started with the school reports being sent out this week, which will obviously also help you when making your informed options choice and as a discussion point during parent evening appointments. The Parent's Evenings are on February 10th &11th and the Options Process needs to be completed by March 5th Take care and stay safe.

Year 10 I want to start by thanking you all for your full support in recent weeks. I have seen a vast improvement in engagement since the first lockdown. Our students are making great progress towards their GCSEs despite the situation we find ourselves in. I know our teachers at RVHS are working tirelessly to ensure that students are getting the best possible education, as well as making a conscious effort to balance it with student's welfare. I want to thank those parents who have sent in positive emails, it really helps to boost staff morale, I also want to acknowledge the hard work of parents, and home schooling is not easy. Teachers are working virtually to deliver remote education but without the support of parents ensuring that students are up in the morning, keeping focused and following the school's timetable, it would not be possible. For that, I want to thank you! We acknowledge that times are not easy at the moment, from the sad news this pandemic brings, the struggles with home schooling to the increased screen time. It is very important that we step back for a moment, acknowledge just how well we are doing and take some time to focus on our mental well-being. Alongside Mrs Dyers well-being bulletins, Mr Price has organised a 'Well-being Wednesday' session where students will be taking time away from their screens and taking part in activities that support positive mental well-being. Please look out for the details for this, as it will prove to be an exciting and engaging day for all. Please do also remember that while we are not physically in school and my door is not physically open, I am only ever and email away. Please do contact me if you feel I, or the school is able to support in any way. Keep safe, keep well and I look forward to seeing and speaking to you all soon. Mr Warry – Year 10 Progress Leader

Year 11 It's hard to believe that another two weeks have past and that we are now nearly at February half term. At least we can see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Although this situation that we are currently living in is awful, we will get through it. I am trying to encourage people to think positively about certain situations and I feel that we need to do everything we can to encourage a Positive Mental Attitude in year 11. With that in mind, I would like to draw your attention to our Wellbeing Wednesday. This is a day dedicated to the wellbeing of staff and students alike. It is essential for the day to work that your son or daughter has joined their Tutor Group Google Classroom In our assembly last week I was inundated with recommendations from subject teachers and in our year team meeting, people discussed how impressed they are with the year group as a whole. I am so pleased with the way they are behaving as a whole and the way they are maintaining their work ethics. Please remember to email me if there is anything I can help with or the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net link. Mr Ryan – Year 11 Progress Leader

Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4
5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
