Editors Note: Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all enjoyed your summer. This is the third year of RVHS Exposed, and I am delighted to have become the Assistant Editor of the School Magazine. I thoroughly enjoyed being Sports Editor last year, but to take that one step further and become Assistant Editor is amazing! Being on the school magazine is a great opportunity, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give it a go! As the summer saw the political situation go from worse to laughable, we at Roding saw our school get its best ever GCSE results. A huge congratulations to all the students on their achievements and to the teachers who supported them.
A huge welcome to all the Year 7’s who have joined us this year. Don’t forget that there are lots of extra-curricular activities that you can get involved in. If you don’t know what to join, take a look at Athina’s article on page 4 for some inspiration. With other articles on the ultimate film experience, fun STEM activities and microplastics this is not an issue you want to miss!

The Ultimate Film Experience The Rooftop Film Club is an original and magical style of cinema. It’s a charming cinematic experience but outside and on relaxing deckchairs. This rooftop experience is so unique because of a number of reasons: -The spectacular views. The Rooftop Film Club believes that great films deserve great locations. With panoramic views and stunning sunsets, movies have never looked so good.
-The comfy deckchairs. Outdoor cinema doesn’t mean it has to be uncomfortable. Which is why they use great deck chairs with adjustable seat heights, meaning you can see the city views under the stars. -The incredible sound. Iconic movies must be heard properly. You don’t ever have to worry about missing any lines because they use state-of-the-art wireless headphones and use amplified speakers so you can live in those memorable cinematic moments, and not get disturbed. -The iconic movies. Their programme is hand picked, to ensure every night is an unforgettable movie experience. There were many great reviews for example, “the location was just as impressive: as the sun goes down, the lit-up view over the Olympic Park towards the City is simply fantastic” and how it’s “a reminder of why London is the best city in the world”. In addition it’s rated a 4/5 stars on trip advisor and 5/5 on Time Out. It’s positioned on the rooftop of the Stratford Shopping Centre. So it’s in a convenient place and also it’s wheelchair accessible. Roof East is open on Tuesday and Fridays, from 5pm to 11pm, and on weekends from 12pm to 11pm. The Rooftop Film Club box office is open an hour before your film starts, so you can arrive early for drinks and food. Some amazing films from classics to brand new releases coming up include: Notting Hill, Aladdin, Romeo and Juliet, Back to the Future, A Star is Born and so much more.

All you need to know about microplastics This report will be telling you all you need to know about microplastics. It will also give you some tips and solutions so that you can help make a difference. To start with, what are microplastics?
Microplastics in our fashion, clothing and sportswear are one of the main producers of plastic particles, cheap t-shirts or even Microplastics are miniscule shards and sports hoodies we all buy are made with broken-up pieces of plastic, they’re often man-made fabrics that contain plastic overlooked as the world is tackling much bigger and/ or glitter, which is classed as a issues, however, although small, they are a microplastic. Microplastics are shed from massive problem. If you know a lot about these items constantly during wear, but microplastics you probably know that they are mainly when being washed. In the in everything from our clothes to our food, washing machine, microfibres are shed at that’s right, you could be consuming plastic! an alarming rate. Surprised? Well this shows that there’s a lot Friends of the earth, a charity who raise more to these tiny plastic particles than meets awareness of the drastic problems in our Why are they so harmful to our environment? environment stated: “One washing load of clothes could be shedding up to 17 Microplastics pick up incredible amounts of million tiny plastic fibres.” bacteria and are shed from our clothes. They are so small that the wind and air can pick them up, once airborne humans and animals can inhale them. Scientists have measured approximately 365 plastic particles per square meter land high in the Pyrenees Mountains every day. It means that these particles are falling onto the soil where we grow our crops, and in our waterways. This also contributes to the amount of plastic in our oceans and fresh water sources and means that many species of marine life are consuming huge amounts of plastic every day.
This is unbelievable, just to think that every time you wash your clothes, there could be up to 17 million microplastics floating amongst your clothes. One of the main pieces of clothing are fleeces (coats and jackets traditionally made of sheep’s fleece but usually made of 100% plastic fibres). Also sports clothing such as football kits and gymwear- your argument could be that some big football teams have started making their kits from plastic found in the ocean, although this is recycling microplastics, it is also adding to the problem.
& However, there is a solution
Solution No.1:Try to wash your clothes (or get your parents to!) at a lower temperature or at the ‘ECO’ setting. Washing at lower temperatures is shown to be ‘less aggressive’ and is therefore less likely to ‘shake out’ plastic fibres. Solution No.2: Put your washing inside a ‘Guppy Bag’ or add a ’Coraball’ to your wash load. The bag will trap microplastics from your clothes and the ‘Coraball’ will contract them. Solution No.3: Keep your clothing for longer, it will reduce the amount of money you spend and the amount of clothes made with microplastics that you buy.
Many brands use microfibres in their clothing , such as: Adidas Nike Mountain warehouse Matalan Pretty little thing
Primark New Look Longchamp H&M Zara
Roding Valley also has a brand new Recycling Scheme! Beginning at the start of the new school year, our school has made a few changes to our effect on the planet, especially in terms of plastic. The changes include a ‘bottle recycling centre’,-as you may have seen- in the main playground outside the pasta bar. We all need to make sure we make good use of this to reduce the harm we do to the environment. Something you may have also noticed about these bins is that they’re in house colours. This is to find the house who recycles the most plastic. Another change you may have noticed is the wooden forks, these were introduced in the summer before we broke up. This is largely contributing to RVHS becoming a ‘greener’ school. We all need to have the Aspiration to face the harmful threats to our environment, Respect our world and Endeavour to make our school a ‘greener’ school. We ARE Roding Valley and together we can make a difference.
