A note from the Editor...

What an exciting time for Roding Valley! I am privileged to say that this is the first edition to many RVHS Exposed Magazines. When I heard that Miss Bingham was starting up a magazine for the school I instantly knew that it was something I wanted to definitely be involved in. I believe a magazine is the best way to show the school’s happy, open environment and the intelligence and abilities of the students who make our school the place it is today. Having the students manage and write the magazine gives more experience and future ideas in careers, also to express individuality and potential. A magazine gives every student, no matter how shy or unconfident the chance to reveal their character to the best if their abilities.
This addition fits perfectly with the spooky and thrilling half term creeping towards us. The arts section gives no excuse for anyone to miss out on the Halloween season with many different ideas and ways you can join in with the fun! Read all about the 11th Anniversary of Wicked the musical. Also have an insight to the fantastic open evening on the 28th of September. This edition includes everything you would need in a magazine! I hope you all enjoy reading the first RVHS Exposed magazine as much as our team have all enjoyed producing it. I invite you to please put forward any interesting stories, or if you wish to advertise in the magazine please contact us! 2
Get Crafty! Tis’ the season! Well, not quite yet but as of the 22nd of September it is officially Autumn. I know that Autumn means darker nights, colder days and bad weather but it also features orange leaves, cosy nights and Halloween! One staple of the Autumnal season is pumpkins, particularly popular at Halloween. Whether you entertain the idea of Halloween or not, it is still a great seasonal event for all and pumpkins are an integral part of it. Pumpkin picking is famous in the United States and is growing popular in this country too. It is similar to strawberry picking, another popular pastime in the Summer, only with this picking you are presented with a wheelbarrow to hold your produce rather than a small tub. Fields and fields of pumpkins are grown throughout the year of all different shapes and sizes, the magnitude of pumpkins available means that you can pick the very best to carve, cook or decorate.
There are lots of places to pumpkin pick in and around Essex and it is great to do as a group or alone. The prices vary but are rather cheap and most are open from the end of September. The closest and most popular Pumpkin Patches are in Colchester or Basildon and are owned by Foxes Farm Produce. They are open, every weekend and half term, from the 30 September and offer various events coincided with the Pumpkin Patch, if you want to make a day of it. There is no need to pre-book and no entrance fee, you only pay for each pumpkin and prices start from ÂŁ1. The patch is, also, next to an outdoor centre which holds a pottery barn, sweet shop and a market. There is car parking and a portion of the proceeds goes to charity, so it is all for a good cause. If you enjoy pumpkin picking, in the Christmas season, they offer Christmas Tree picking.
Get picking and look below for ways to revamp the traditional pumpkin carving!

The October Revolution: 100 Years On The October Revolution was a monumental event in Russian history that has had a profound impact on twentieth century history not just in Europe but across the globe. After the fall of Tsar Nicholas II, a provisional government was set up to oversee Russia in the transition period. Vladimir Len- Did You Know? in, who had previously been in exile for Marxist activism inThe October Revolution actually happened cluding threats to overthrow the Tsar and lead a workers uprisin November. Due to the differences in ing, heard about this and was keen to see how the ‘new Russia’ the Julian (Russia) and Gregorian (the would take shape. The provisional government had allowed the release of prisoners and those in exile; Lenin was set to return. West) calendar systems. On his train journey from Siberia to Petrograd he wrote his own version of the Communist manifesto: His vision for a new, socialist Russia. On the 25th of October Lenin and his supporters, the Bolshevik party, blockaded the winter palace where the provisional government was based. Members were forced outside and executed. Lenin gave a speech announcing that the provisional government had fallen. Although at the time it seemed only a change in government, similar to what had happened in February of that year. However there were much further implications that continued for almost a century. Lenin’s position in power now meant that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (or the USSR) was formed as a communist nation, their policies and ideologies spread from Vladivostok to Vilnius, creating a society ruled by the ‘proletariat’ (workers) and putting the needs of the many over the needs of the few. The creation of the USSR not only set up a new nation, altering geographics, but it also set the stage for both international and national tensions for the rest of the country’s lifetime. The USA became increasingly suspicious of communist nations as the 20th century progressed and after WWII became the basis of the Cold War. There were many occasions where the world was close to annihilation from nuclear war due to tensions between the USA and the USSR, for example the Cuban Missile Crisis. Within the USSR, the ‘workers paradise’ wasn't shaping up to be as such, successive leaders such as Stalin and Khrushchev each had their own leadership style. Stalin may have been idolised by the people but he was a harsh leader, workers found to be disobeying laws would put into a ‘gulag’ (labour camp) where they were poorly treated and prisoners were often worked to death. The USSR remained a nation until the end of 1991, the nation collapsed due to a culmination of factors including economic instability alongside political unrest. By the following year, the original former nations had been reinstated. The October Revolution demonstrates how a rebellion and subsequent political change of hands in one country can have far reaching consequences across the globe and for extended periods of time. The Cold War and the Soviet Union is covered in greater detail in both GCSE and A Level History. For further information feel free contact or enquire in the Humanities office.

The award’s purpose is to put emphasis on fictional writing being a necessity in stage productions and creative projects. On top of this it gives children and young adults support with their writing and it’s development. The award consists of five categories tailored to different age groups, and requires you write a fictional story. There is also a category for the older writer, to write a nonfiction essay about a person who positively changed the world “For Good”.
