Week 28 (2013 14) parent bulletin 25 4 14

I would like to welcome everyone back after what I hope has been an enjoyable and restful Easter Holiday. The Easter break saw a lot of activity at the school. The trip to Normandy returned just as the holidays started and the school trip to Sorrento and the Bay of Naples went out during the holiday. We also ran our very popular and successful Easter revision classes again so, all in all, it was a very busy time. The students who attended the revision sessions and who went on both trips were very well behaved and I would like to thank the large number of staff who gave up their holidays to either run revision sessions or supervise trips abroad. Congratulations to our Year 8 Netball Squad who are the West Essex District Champions following a 22-11 victory over St Marks School (Harlow) in the final. This is a fantastic achievement and, on top of this, the team went unbeaten throughout the year: Kara Pleasance (8Q). Abbie Bromley (8X), Hannah Rivers (8X), Jodie Simm (8Q), Sophia Filaitis (8Q), Ellie Falconer (8R), Temi Olusesan (8X), Lucy Thomas (8Q), Maryann Thurgood (8Q), Louise Gilbert (8R), Lily Foster (8T), Olivia Biddle(8V), Maisie Fellerman (8Q) and Natalie Hall (8V) - very well done! Congratulations also to ‘Team Zambia’ who raised over £1300 packing bags for customers in Sainsbury’s on the first Saturday of the Easter Holidays. I was there for a while and the students were amazing ambassadors for their school. Thanks also to Mr Tisdale and Miss McEvoy for giving up their time to supervise and support. The GCSE Examination season starts in earnest in just under 2 weeks time. Details of the final revision sessions and the GCSE Examination timetable are further on in this bulletin and I would encourage all parents of Year 11 students to check that everyone is clear about when exams are on. If you have any concerns about any aspect of the exams, please contact Mrs Cain (Head of Year 11) or Mrs Draper (Examinations Officer) in the first instance. Next Thursday (1st May) is the Year 10 Parents’ Evening. This is a very important evening for parents of Year 10 students and I would encourage parents to ensure that students have made appointments. If parents have any issues in making appointments please contact Mr McManners (Head of Year 10) at the school. I wish you all a good weekend. Paul Banks Headteacher

Our Catering staff will provide students with croissants and juice free of charge. These sessions are hugely beneficial and we would urge you to encourage your son/daughter to attend. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. J Draper

FINAL GCSE Examination Timetable May/June 2014 STUDENTS HAVE NOW BEEN ISSUED WITH THEIR INDIVIDUAL EXAMINATION TIMETABLES VIA THEIR FORM TUTORS, THESE HAVE BEEN PRINTED ON BRIGHT YELLOW PAPER. IF YOUR SON/DAUGHTER HAS NOT RECEIVED THIS YET, PLEASE ASK THEM TO SPEAK TO THEIR FORM TUTOR OR SEE MISS DRAPER FOR ANOTHER COPY. PLEASE ENSURE THIS SHEET HAS BEEN CHECKED FOR ACCURACY AND YOU HAVE BEEN ENTERED AND SEATED FOR ALL EXPECTED EXAMS. Year 11 students should have received in registration a 'Guidance for Students' booklet with a blue cover which is full of information and advice about before, during and after examinations. Tucked inside the front cover is a 'Statement of Entry'. This lists your son/daughter's personal details plus every examination they have been entered for. Students must check this information thoroughly, especially personal details and name on certificates. This must be the students legal forename/surname. The examination boards will charge a fee for any amendments requested after certificates have been printed. Students must also check that they have been entered for all expected exams. If any information is wrong or missing, they must speak to Miss Draper, the Exams Officer immediately. If your son/daughter has not received either their booklet or individual timetable, they must speak to their Form Tutor who will have their copy in the register bag. If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me. Jenny Draper Examinations Officer

Year 9 Football The season is now nearly at an end. In our local league, the RVHS Y9 team won the League which is very pleasing as we were often not at full strength. The District West Essex and Harlow Schools Cup saw us recently beat King Harold 10-1 in the semi-final. We await our opponents and the date of the Final. In the Essex County Cup we went through four rounds which saw us visit Colchester, Maldon, and Benfleet before we played at home. We then visited Emerson Park, Hornchurch in the quarter finals and were unlucky to lose 3-2. Well done to all those who contributed to this season. 22 players have played for the team this season. Student Reception Post Box Dear Parents, To try to alleviate the student activity at student reception we are introducing a postbox where students will be able to post any correspondence to the school providing it meets the following requirements:The correspondence is in an envelope It has the following written on the envelope: Name Form Short description of content For example: Jack Smith 8S Normandy trip deposit If a receipt is required for enclosed payments this will be delivered to the student in their class during the day. Please advise students not to post any items without the requirements above as they will not be processed and the school will not hold any responsibility for the consequences following such actions. For example: a student missing out on a school trip. We hope this will help the students to enjoy their breaks more and spend less time queuing at student reception. Karen Salmons Business Manager

Year 8 & Year 9 Trip to The Somme On the 9th May 2014, as part of the school's commemoration of 100 years since the start of World War 1, the English department has arranged a one day trip for Year 8 and 9 students to The Somme as part of the Year 8 Unit on First World War Poetry and GCSE preparation for Year 9. This is an exciting opportunity for students to enhance their subject knowledge on this unit of study. The trip will involve travel to and from the World War 1 battlefields at The Somme in France, as well as a guided tour organised by Anglia Tours. There are still 20 places left for this trip. Students who would like to attend should please get in touch with Miss Peter in the English office.
