Week 30 (2013 14) parent bulletin 9 5 14

Page 1

I would like to start this week's bulletin with a request for parents to support the school in relation to mobile phones. We have had a few incidents this week where students have had their phone confiscated as they were using their phone during the school day. In speaking with the students, the reason that they were on their phone was that they were responding to text messages/telephone calls from home. Whilst I appreciate that there are times when parents need to get messages to students during the day, I would ask that the school is contacted and our office staff will ensure that your child receives any message. We have a policy in school where students are permitted mobiles in school but that they must be switched off and kept in bags/blazers. I would like to remind parents that mobiles used by students during the school day will be confiscated. If a child's mobile is confiscated more than once in the year then the phone will only be returned to parents or another adult. I would appreciate parental support in this matter. Parents should also have received a letter this week regarding the closure of the school on Monday 7th July as a result of the Tour de France being routed through the Epping Forest area. The vast majority of primary and secondary schools in the area are having to take this step due to the impact that road closures and altered public transport services will have on the area. Our Year 8 football team lost 3-2 to Burnt Mill in the West Essex District Cup Final last night. The team have played superbly all season and, whilst they were pipped to the trophy, should be incredibly proud of the way they have represented the school throughout the year. The next meeting of the Parents' Forum takes place next Thursday (15th May 2014). The meeting starts at 6pm and will take place in the school library (please note the change of venuethe library is accessed by the Brook Road entrance to the school). We will be discussing the use of technology and social media and looking at ways in which parents can help keep their children safe on-line. I would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend this meeting. The GCSE examination season started yesterday and our Year 11 students will be involved in a large number of examinations over the next 6 weeks. In speaking with a lot of students recently it is clear just how much revision and study our students have been undertaking and I am convinced that this will stand them in very good stead. Parents should be aware that some afternoon examinations will finish well beyond the end of the school day - please check your child's examination timetable for details. For some GCSE subject areas where the examination falls after the half term holiday, there will be a limited number of revision sessions taking place in the half term holiday and details of these will be published soon. I would like to wish everyone a good weekend. Paul Banks Headteacher

Bupa 10,000 for Dyslexia I am a mother of a child at RVHS and I am running the Bupa 10,000 for dyslexia. As a parent of a child that is showing signs of Dyslexia, and not fully understanding the condition myself, I have taken to research this condition using the internet. ‘Dyslexia is the most common cause of childhood loss of self confidence. It can make a child distanced from their friends and peers. Dyslexia accounts for the majority of children with special educational needs. Dyslexics are often highly talented in everything except reading and writing. Some of the most famous people are dyslexic including Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Tom Cruise and many more. A lot of children are undiagnosed and misunderstood as the classic mask for this condition is naughty behaviour, as they would rather be seen as a naughty child that stupid (not my words). ‘ If you can spare a pound to sponsor me, this will go to a cause that is dedicated in trying to change things for dyslexics. Thank you Clare Robinson http://www.justgiving.com/Clare-Robinson6

Our Catering staff will provide students with croissants and juice free of charge. These sessions are hugely beneficial and we would urge you to encourage your son/daughter to attend. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. J Draper

FINAL GCSE Examination Timetable May/June 2014 STUDENTS HAVE NOW BEEN ISSUED WITH THEIR INDIVIDUAL EXAMINATION TIMETABLES VIA THEIR FORM TUTORS, THESE HAVE BEEN PRINTED ON BRIGHT YELLOW PAPER. IF YOUR SON/DAUGHTER HAS NOT RECEIVED THIS YET, PLEASE ASK THEM TO SPEAK TO THEIR FORM TUTOR OR SEE MISS DRAPER FOR ANOTHER COPY. PLEASE ENSURE THIS SHEET HAS BEEN CHECKED FOR ACCURACY AND YOU HAVE BEEN ENTERED AND SEATED FOR ALL EXPECTED EXAMS. Year 11 students should have received in registration a 'Guidance for Students' booklet with a blue cover which is full of information and advice about before, during and after examinations. Tucked inside the front cover is a 'Statement of Entry'. This lists your son/daughter's personal details plus every examination they have been entered for. Students must check this information thoroughly, especially personal details and name on certificates. This must be the students legal forename/surname. The examination boards will charge a fee for any amendments requested after certificates have been printed. Students must also check that they have been entered for all expected exams. If any information is wrong or missing, they must speak to Miss Draper, the Exams Officer immediately. If your son/daughter has not received either their booklet or individual timetable, they must speak to their Form Tutor who will have their copy in the register bag. If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me. Jenny Draper Examinations Officer

Student Reception Post Box Dear Parents, To try to alleviate the student activity at student reception we are introducing a postbox where students will be able to post any correspondence to the school providing it meets the following requirements:The correspondence is in an envelope It has the following written on the envelope: Name Form Short description of content For example: Jack Smith 8S Normandy trip deposit If a receipt is required for enclosed payments this will be delivered to the student in their class during the day. Please advise students not to post any items without the requirements above as they will not be processed and the school will not hold any responsibility for the consequences following such actions. For example: a student missing out on a school trip. We hope this will help the students to enjoy their breaks more and spend less time queuing at student reception.
