All parents should have received a letter this week from Mr Wershof (Chair of Governors) regarding the appointment of the school’s new Headteacher. Mr James Luck will be Headteacher of RVHS from September 2014 and is an excellent appointment for the school. James works in a school judged by OFSTED to be ‘outstanding’ (Queensmead School, South Ruislip) and is very much looking forward to being part of the next phase of Roding Valley’s progress as we move towards outstanding at our next inspection. Whilst he obviously has a number of commitments at his current school, James will be attending some events/parents’ evenings after the half term so that parents will have an opportunity to meet him before he formally starts on 1st September 2014. We hosted an excellent Parents’ Forum meeting last night about how parents can help keep their children safe on-line. The link below is to a really informative site that has advice and short films that parents may find useful in helping discuss the need to stay safe online with their children: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ Congratulations go to our Year 7 Football team for the superb effort they have displayed all season. Although they lost the West Essex Cup final last night, they should be commended for the outstanding effort and commitment they have shown all season and I am sure that they will continue to do well next year. Congratulations also go to Lauren Higgs 11W who is the winner of April’s Jack Petchey Award in recognition of her fundraising for charity. Finally, a massive ‘well done’ to our Tennis Team who soundly beat Barking Abbey Sports College earlier in the week. Next Thursday (22nd May 2014) is our Year 7 Parents’ Evening. For parents new to the school, please make sure that your child is making appointments with their teachers. If you have any issues regarding appointments please contact Mrs Preston (Head of Year 7) in the first instance. Parents should enter via the Brook Road entrance and sign in at the welcome desk where you will be given information regarding where teachers are based. Parents of children who used to get the school bus from Brook Road should now be aware that Essex County Council has changed the service provider. We have been asked by the new provider of the school bus service to remind parents that the service will leave the school at 3.15pm and will leave promptly every day-the bus will not wait for late comers. Finally, this half term finishes next Friday (23rd May) and this is a normal school day. School resumes after the half term holiday on Monday 2nd June 2014. I wish you all a good weekend. Paul Banks Headteacher

The Year 9 season came to an end with a disappointing result in the Cup Final played at Harlow Town this week. We hoped to complete the league and cup double but sadly went down 3-1 to Davenant School. Davenant started very well. We started to get some control back after 15 minutes, this resulted in Jack Kibblewhite toe poking the ball past the keeper to score. The goal was harshly disallowed for ‘foot up’ on the rushing out goalkeeper. Joe Busby, our keeper, made a great save which resulted in a corner. From this they scored an easy header, our defence not reacting to the delivery of the ball. Soon after, we were caught out by quick movement to go 2-0 down. The second half saw a good reaction. Harry Francis scored from a wide free kick. Then again we had a goal disallowed - Dru Yearwood being given offiside by the Davenant linesman. Then Davenant made it 3-1 with an unfortunate goal, Joe Busby who had made a number of important saves pushed a shot out only to hit our defender and rebound into the goal. Good luck to both Connor Tyrell and Harry Francis who will be representing the Essex county team this Saturday (17th May) in the South East England Final vs Surrey and on Wednesday (21st May) at the English Schools County Final vs Sussex at the Madejski Stadium. Thank you to all the players involved this season. P Fitch

Student Reception Post Box Dear Parents, To try to alleviate the student activity at student reception we are introducing a postbox where students will be able to post any correspondence to the school providing it meets the following requirements:The correspondence is in an envelope It has the following written on the envelope: Name Form Short description of content For example: Jack Smith 8S Normandy trip deposit If a receipt is required for enclosed payments this will be delivered to the student in their class during the day. Please advise students not to post any items without the requirements above as they will not be processed and the school will not hold any responsibility for the consequences following such actions. For example: a student missing out on a school trip. We hope this will help the students to enjoy their breaks more and spend less time queuing at student reception. Karen Salmons Business Manager
Extended Research Project Letters are available for students to collect from Main Reception. The deadline for submission of a project is 3rd June.
