2011 Season Outlook After bringing home the program’s seventh KCAC Championship in 2010, the Braves are entering 2011 with the same expectations. But OU knows that the road will be much harder this season. “It will be harder this year due to our strength of schedule,” said OU Head Baseball Coach Joe Reed. “We want to play the best competition possible, especially in our non-conference season.” The NAIA has adopted strength of schedule as one of the components for ratings. The Braves are playing the defending NAIA National Champions, Cumberland University this season and will also play HAAC defending champions, William Jewell College. In the mix is Briar Cliff University, Southern Nazarene University, Rogers State University, and NCAA Division II opponent Rockhurst University.
trampoline effect the barrel of a bat has on a ball. Bat manufacturers will have to; in effect “deaden” the trampoline bounce that pitched balls experience when a batter makes contact. Basically, aluminum bats will theoretically be the same as wooden bats. Then, starting in 2012, all high school baseball bats will follow in the same way; that is, they will all need at BBCOR stamp on each bat.
Talent wise the OU coaching staff believes that it has more than what they had last year. “One thing about last year’s team is that we had contributions from more than just one guy. It was someone different who stepped up to the plate,” said Reed. “This year we are going to be looking for more of the same thing.” The OU coaching staff believes that it will take a total team effort this season to repeat as KCAC Champions. “As long as we go out there, play to our capabilities, and stay healthy, we will be in the same position as we were in last year,” said Reed. Tabor College was voted on by the KCAC coaches to win the title this season and that is fine with Reed. “Even though we are the defending KCAC Champions we like to have the attention put on someone else. The attention on Tabor will lighten our load, stress wise, on the players.”
Pitchers The pitching staff this year returns First Team All-KCAC performer Gustavo Sanchez, but loses number two pitcher Steve Marks to injury. The pitching staff is a year older with sophomores Cole Meeks, Josh Brooks and Jake Kissner now returning to the team as seasoned veterans. The OU coaching staff is still trying to decide who the closer will be for this season but they have an idea who is going to be their top three in the rotation. “Sanchez will be our top guy, Kissner should be in the rotation, and Cloud County Community College transfer Jeremiah Williams will be in the mix,” said Reed. “He has experience at the junior college level.” The Braves will also have the luxury of having three of their top left handers be in the five man rotation. Brooks and Meeks have a shot to be in the rotation and there are three freshmen that the OU coaching staff is hoping to be in the mix. Jacob Loucks from Emporia High School, Jake Kolenda from Bishop Ward High School and Josh Manker from Ray-Pec High School will all have a shot at the rotation. “Even though they are young, they are competitors and have played on elite teams in the summer and in high school and they know how to win,” said Reed.
This year there is also a change in the bats that the players will be using. The new bats are called BBCOR Bats. They’re the next wave in the aluminum bat battle. Starting this season any and all aluminum baseballs that are used in NAIA baseball will have to carry a seal of BBCOR approval. BBCOR stands for “Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution” and it focuses on how much of a
Infield The infield will be anchored by First Team All-KCAC performer Spenser Augustine. He was the first Brave in program history to hit a homerun in four straight games. He will be back at shortstop this season. Second base there is a competition between Jason Beers and Greg Wisner, third base is going to be between Beers and West Los Ange-
les Community College transfer Edgar Fileto. “He (Fileto) is probably our best third basemen but he is also one of our best first basemen,” said Reed. “We are trying to see what corner to put him at for the team’s defense.” At first base there are five guys that the coaching staff is looking at. Fileto, Redland Community College transfer Jeff Lucero, Brooks, Brett Gearhart, or Allan Bleich are the five players that are vying for the position. Catchers The Braves lose First Team All-KCAC performer Christian Rivera behind the plate, but return Josh Ragsdale. Last season as a freshman Ragsdale was able to learn the position behind Rivera. OU brings in transfers Hutch Bogdan from Benedictine College and Kyle Pener from Johnson County Community College. Outfield There is depth in the outfield with the return of First Team All-KCAC performer Dustin Balmer in right field, Honorable Mention All-KCAC left fielder Jon Breedlove and center fielder Sam Engle. In the mix is Neosho County Community College transfer Ryan Bontrager and Saddleback College transfer Jeff Montenegro. “We have some really good options this year and it is a really good position to be in with our defense,” said Reed. Offense The Braves have the potential to be as explosive as they were last year. “Last year we came out of the gate really slow,” said Reed. “Then in the sixth inning we kicked it in, outscoring teams 6-1 during that inning and were able to close a lot of ball games out.” OU’s number one goal is they have to get on base and then from there get guys into scoring position. “Once we get those opportunities we have to capitalize on those opportunities, we cannot leave runners on base,” said Reed. “We are playing for one or two runs an inning.”

“These old ballparks are like cathedrals in America. We don’t have big old Gothic cathedrals like they do in Europe. But we got baseball parks.” - Jimmy Buffett
OU Athletic Administration TM
Arabie Conner Athletic Director Arabie Conner begins her sixth year at the helm of Ottawa University’s athletic department. The previous five years have brought many accomplishments for the Braves: 115 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, 29 NAIA All-Americans, 82 KCAC Players of the Week, and 302 All-KCAC selections. Six coaches have been named KCAC Coach of the Year, two have been named KBCA College Coach of the Year and two have earned region coach of the year. Under Conner, the athletic department started women’s golf during the 2007-08 season. The men’s and women’s basketball teams have each reached the Sweet 16 of the NAIA Division II National Tournament. The men’s team made back-to-back appearances at the NAIA National Tournament (200607, 2007-08) for the first time in program history. Before being named athletic director, Conner spent 11 years as the head women’s basketball coach at Ottawa University, stepping down after a record breaking 2006-07 season. She finished as the all-time winningest coach in Lady Brave history with 162 victories. Conner earned the Kansas Basketball Coaches Associations Women’s College Basketball Coach of the Year award 2003-04 and again in 2006-07. In 2004, 2006 and 2007, she led the Lady Braves to the KCAC Basketball Tournament Championship and to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Conner also helped OU to its first ‘Sweet 16’ appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in 2007. Conner graduated from William Jewell College in 1992 with a degree in health/exercise science and English. She was a four year letterwinner on the basketball court for the Cardinals, earning HAAC Player of the Year in 1991. Conner is fourth all-time in career scoring (1,893). Conner also played softball and soccer for WJC and after her playing days, she was an assistant coach on the women’s basketball team. She was named William Jewell Athlete of the Year twice for two different sports, basketball and softball and was inducted into William Jewell’s Hall of Fame in 2004. The KCAC - Courtesy of the KCAC The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, KS Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St. Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big 6 (which became the Big 8, now the Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St. Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968, Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Northern and Southern divisions until 1970 – when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s, the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975, women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992, St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999, University of Saint Mary-Leavenworth joined to bring the KCAC membership to ten. Today, the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.
