appy April everyone! It is officially spring although we have been experiencing beautiful weather for weeks now… don’t you just love living here!? April also means that Spring and Summer Camps are just around the corner. We have a great guide to help you pick the best camp for your child in our Spring & Summer Camp Guide! We start out the month on a funny-note thanks to April Fools Day… so steer clear of fake dog “do-do” and be sure to check for saran wrap on the top of any and all bottles. Oh, and don’t forget about the standard sugar/ salt mix-up! If you make it through April 1st , you have two weeks before the dreaded April 15th tax filing deadline! I don’t know about you, but I think April 16th should be a national holiday, we’ll call it All-day Happy Hour Day (& the tab is on Uncle Sam of course)! On this Earth Day (April 22) be sure to reboot your inner tree-hugger and aim to make some more earth-conscious decisions for the rest of the year. For your entertainment this month, we’ve included some great features including Pinterest Picks: Happy Earth Day!, Celeb Tracker: Eco-friendly Stars, and A is for App: Eco-Friendly Apps. We also have tons of great local events listed on our Local Events Calendar. Our featured North County kids are some of the most talented we’ve spotlighted in the magazine yet. Check out our Skateboarder of the Month, Surfer of the Month, and North County Kid of the Month. As always, thank you for choosing North County Kids Magazine and shoot me an email with any suggestions or comments... that’s what I’m here for! Peace & Love & Spring Flowers,

Hometown: Carlsbad, California Age: 9 Grade: 3rd School: Mission Estancia Hobbies: Reading, skateboarding & training my puppy Favorite food: Grandmas Yakisoba (She’s Japanese) Favorite thing about living in North County: The mountains, the beaches and the skate parks

Q&A We hear that you play several sports. Which ones are your favorites and why? I love lacrosse because I love the game and how the crowd cheers when you get the ball. It’s definitely an awesome sport. What qualities do you think create a good athlete? Why? Speed! My mom and dad always say you can’t teach speed … you either have it or you don’t. I guess I have it because they call me Flash! Having good sportsmanship also makes you a good athlete also. Do you ever get nervous before games? If so, what do you do to calm your nerves? I do get nervous, but I keep my eye on the prize and in this case it’s to win. I take a few breaths and enjoy the game.

6

North County Kids | April 2016

Other than sports, we hear that you have been modeling and dabbling in acting this year! What do you enjoy about modeling and acting? I like the cool clothes I get and I love making the photographers laugh on set. I get to have fun while they take pictures of me being silly. Do you see yourself continuing to model and act for a while? If so, do you have any specific publications or acting parts you are striving for? Not sure, I really love sports the most. If I continue I think I would like being on the Disney Channel; that would be cool. I would love to do something that makes people laugh. As far as magazines, my mom always says “Vogue,” but for me I would love to be in a skater or snowboarding magazine.

We also know that you are a selfless person and love helping others. Why do you think it’s important to help others and give back? It’s important to help others because I want everyone in the world to be happy. How can I be happy if my friend is sad? How can a human being walk past a person in need? I always want to help, it’s just who I am. What do you like and dislike about being one of four kids? It’s fun having a big family. I like being the oldest because I get to lead the way. Sometimes it gets loud in our house but I find a spot if I want to get away. It’s also cool to always have someone to play with. NCK

Griffin Teisher Grade: 12 School: La Costa Canyon Age: 18 Hometown: Encinitas Stance: Goofy Sponsors: Adelio Started Surfing: 2008 Starting Competing: 2010

Hobbies: Baseball and Snowboarding Favorite Surf Spot: Beacons and Cardiff Long board or short board: Short Board

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? There are a lot of really good surfers in Encinitas especially at spots like Swamis and Seaside and they have pushed me to keep improving my surfing. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? My dad taught me to surf with Trevor Christ. Trevorś son, Kooper (Darryl) and I were both learning to surf at the same time so he would push us to surf bigger waves and coach us on how to improve our surf. Adelio is giving me wetsuits so I am always warm during the winter. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Go surfing as much as you can and spend as much time in the water as possible because the more time you spend in the ocean, the better you will get as a surfer.

Career Highlights Getting sponsored for the first time Making A team at LCC all 4 years LCC team making final in the Sun Diego High School Showdown

What do you love the most about surfing? Why? Being able to travel to places I never would of thought of going without surfing. Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I saw a little reef shark in Fiji and I almost paddled to the boat right then even though they won’t do anything to me. Around home I haven’t seen any sharks but I see seals a lot and sometimes they are sketchy cause they follow you around while you are paddling. Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? Hopefully finishing college and looking to get a job. Who is your favorite pro-surfer? John John Florence.

Where is your go-to surf gear shop? Probably Hansen’s. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Probably 13-14 foot in Kauai. Has it been difficult to balance competitive surfing and playing high level baseball? Yes, I have actually missed a couple contests because I have had baseball games and its a bummer seeing my rankings go down, but besides that I can usually do both. As a baseball scholarship athlete at Cal State San Marcos do you think you will be able to compete in both baseball and surfing next year as a college student? I want to be able to do both. Baseball will be a priority next year but if I have enough free time I will definitely try to compete for the surf team. NCK

There are many types of summer camps for kids, but few will have campers interacting with rhinos and giraffes, meeting meerkats, or getting up close to cheetahs. Summer Camps at the Zoo and Safari Park are hands-on, join-in, be-a-part-of-it fun with options for kids of all ages. S

pring is in the air, but most parents’ minds are on summer—especially kids camps. These days there are many options to choose from, but few will have campers interacting with rare and exotic wildlife like the camps at both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The enthusiastic staff at both sites know kids as well as they do animals, and the result is a variety of hands-on, join-in, be-apart-of-it fun for young kids, tweens, and teens.

for 2016, Photography Teen Adventures offers a chance to learn techniques and put them into practice snapping shots of our animals. For artists of all ages, the Zoo’s special summer programs let creativity run wild. Summer Art camp for grades 4 through adult features a different theme each week and includes individual instruction and amazing animal models. Little Artists in grades 1-3 grow their skills though guidance from a professional art teacher, with the help of close-up animal encounters.

Zoo Fun At the Zoo, the five-day adventures include tons of fun—animal encounters, behind-thescenes visits, bus rides, games, and crafts. Every day is action-packed with exploration. Cub Campers, ages 4 through 5, have fun discovering the different jobs at the Zoo and all the ways that animals play. Campers ages 5 through 13 explore the world of animals though a variety of five-day adventures. With two different themed programs available for each age level, kids can enjoy more than one week of fun! For those entering grades 8 through 12, the Epic Teen Adventures is challenging, fast-paced fun filled with animal encounters, behind-thescenes visits, and hands-on activities. New

Safari Park Adventures There may be many types of summer camps for kids, but few will have campers interacting with armadillos, making friends with meerkats, getting to know giraffes, and discovering African wonders the way the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s will! Pre-K and Kindergarten campers will go on a journey inspired by some favorite animal stories and fairy tales. After teachers share a story, campers encounter different stars of the tales through exploring treks and up-close animal encounters. Crafts, games, songs, add to the fun-filled days. A special camp for ages 2 and 3 with their favorite adult, means the “littles” get to have fun while learning, too!

Full-day camps for grades 1 through 12 offer discovery in a range of topics. First and second graders move and groove like the animals in a program themed around animal locomotion. Grades three through five sift fact from fiction as they explore animal “unhuggables,” awesome animal oddities, and maybe even mythical creatures. Older campers get the inside scoop on animal care and conservation straight from the experts. Grades six through eight meet keepers and animal trainers to see what it takes to work with exotic animals and try their hand at wildlife research. Campers entering grades 9 through 12 will have a chance to join the team and ponder whether a zoo career is in their future by meeting and shadowing professionals in all areas of animal care and conservation. Summer camp at the Park and the Zoo offers a different, much richer experience than when visiting with family or school. Campers enjoy experiences most people never have, and it leaves a lasting impression. As one parent shared “This camp was an inspiration and really nurtured her deep love for wildlife and our natural world.”

For detailed information about summer camp options and to reserve space, visit the websites at sandiegozoo.org/content/ summer-camp and sdzsafaripark.org/education/summer-camp-2016 or call 619-718-3000. April 2016 | North County Kids

Business Spotlight

Great Wolf Lodge has 12 properties throughout the US and 1 in Ontario but the one that just opened up in Garden Grove ( just 15 min from Disneyland) is a first for Southern California. In fact, it’s the first and only indoor waterpark in the state. With so fun packed into one place, your kids will be thanking you for weeks to come!

5 Things Your Kids Will Love About Great Wolf Lodge, SoCal The Waterpark

The massive 105,000 square foot indoor waterpark, exclusive to resort guests, is the centerpiece of Great Wolf Lodge. Imagine a multi level tree house with suspension bridges, slides and spray stations, a vertical plunge through a trapdoor into an enclosed tunnel, a surf simulator and a wave pool. The impressive space, kept at a tropical 84 degrees year round, also has kiddie slides and an enclosed children pool for younger kids as well as a heated outdoor pool surrounded by lounge chairs and next to a bar and grill.

Main Street

Main Street takes up the entire lower floor of the hotel and is dedicated to all kinds of games from an arcade (open 24/7) to glow in the dark mini golf, to bowling to an XD theatre. There is also has a creation station where kids can make their own stuffed animals that are electronically connected to screens around the hotel which lead them on an exciting treasure hunt.

Scoops Spa MagiQuest

Explore the lodge with this adventurous game. In the MagiQuest store, your kids pick out their own personal magic wand, top it with extra powers, and set off on a quest. Younger kids will delight in following electronic clues on screens leading them to objects around the resort while older kids can stay busy for hours completing different levels in order to fight to defeat the Goblin King. Indulge your little one in some spa time! Swaddled in a mini pink terrycloth robe, she’ll savor the ice cream themed manis and pedis while sitting on her banana split throne. She’ll even get a pageant sash and tiara to take home. Jealous? Try a Mommy & Me Pedicure for a little extra bonding/pampering time.

Story Time

8PM means time to wind down and head over to the grand lobby for the Great Clock Tower Show and Story Time. After watching animatronic animal friends come to life with songs and stories, a special guest comes out to read a story about the Great Wolf characters from a huge picture book. Be sure to wear your favorite Pj’s!
