Q&A
We hear that you are one talented girl! First off, tell us a little about why you wanted to start taking Italian lessons and what you love about it. Because my mom is Italian and our lessons are fun. I get to do arts and crafts in Italian. I also love learning the colors in Italian. What are you favorite Italian words/sayings? Why? “Bella Ciao,” because of the song. I dance around the house with my mother to this song. It means goodbye beautiful. Also, Succa D’arancia for orange juice. And my brother drinks milk so I say, “lui beve latte.”
NCKid
of the Month
Have you ever seen your photos in print before? If so, when/in what publication? I saw myself in my dancing school brochure and in my dad’s dental practice ad. I thought it was cool to see myself in print.
Hometown: La Costa/Carlsbad Age: 7 Grade: 2nd School: Mission Estancia
What do you love the most about ballet? What do you love the most about hip-hop? I love wearing a tutu and the classical music. The dances are so pretty in my ballet class. I also love the music in hiphop. It’s a lot faster.
Beyond your talents we know you are the only girl with 3 brothers! What do you think the advantages are of being the only girl? Any disadvantages? I love being the only girl because I get all of my mom’s stuff. My mom always calls me her princess and she loves to buy me clothes. I like having my own space away from my brothers too. I get to have my own room and I love that for when my friends come over. I really don’t think there are any disadvantages because I love being the only girl with all my brothers. Sometimes I think it would be cool to have a sister, but only sometimes.
Lastly, you are going to be featured in the Tea Collection catalogue in several 2016 issues. Congrats! What do you enjoy about modeling? I love taking pictures and I love the clothes I get to wear. I also love pretending like when I was in San Francisco I had to pretend I was in Hawaii on a beach. It was so much fun.
Is there anything else you would like to add? My mom told me to do a nice deed with my tooth fairy money and I gave the librarian in my school my money in a card to buy her coffee. It really made her day. Like my mom says, “you can never go poor by giving.” NCK
Other than learning Italian, we hear that you also take ballet and hip-hop classes. When did you start getting into dance? I was three years old when I started taking dance lessons. I started with ballet, then eventually musical theater and hip-hop.

Down To Earth Dad
Talkin’ ‘bout a Resolution 2015 is in the rearview mirror, so it’s time to formulate a lifechanging New Year’s resolution—something so substantial that it will help morph me into the Down to Earth Dad 2.0. Now, this requires a bit of painful self reflection. Is there anything I do in my life that is totally unproductive and a complete waste of time? Is there anything in my life that is a bit unhealthy? Is there anything in my life that is borderline creepy? From across the room my wife has just shouted with tremendous vigor “fantasy football.” Perhaps, but I was thinking about something else—Facebook. I recognized it was time to relinquish my Facebook obsession earlier this year when my family took a trip back to my hometown of Indianapolis. My wife and I were sitting in Steak ‘n Shake (because that’s what you do in Indiana), and on a lark she asked me, “How many Facebook friends do you have in this restaurant?” I quickly surveyed the room, “Four that I can see, but I’m guessing there might be a few dudes back in the kitchen.” Her follow-up question cut to the heart of the matter, “How many of them do you actually want to go over and talk to?” I truthfully replied, “None, obviously.” I wasn’t being aloof—I just already knew everything that was going on in their lives from Facebook. I have the same feelings about Facebook that The Breakfast Club’s John Bender had about the Shermer High School Physics Club—it’s sorta
social, demented and sad, but social. Here’s an example—I am Facebook friends with the girl whose locker was next to mine for four years in high school. During that time I don’t think we spoke once. Now we have a symbiotic Facebook relationship, where she relentlessly shows me pictures of mutilated animals in the futile attempt to convert me to become a vegetarian and I patiently wait to analyze her family’s vacation photos from Kings Island. This is the twisted kicker—the reason I want to see her vacation photos is probably only so I can subconsciously convince myself that my family’s Lake Tahoe vacation was better than hers, and therefore in the world of social competitiveness I am somehow the big winner. See what I mean—it’s demented and sad, but social. There was a recent study published in the Public Library of Science that found that using Facebook is associated with jealousy, social tension, isolation and depression. Seriously, it took two college professors to figure this out? But who am I kidding, I can’t give up Facebook. How else would I find out that D-list celebrities have died? Maybe I should just set my sights on a more realistic New Year’s resolution—like thinning down my overflowing Netflix queue. NCK The Down to Earth Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.

New Year | New Wardrobe
T
here’s no better time for a fresh start than the new year and no better place to start than in your closet. We all have those outfits we wear over and over again, getting compliments each and every time. And then there are those that no one seems to notice and for some reason, don’t make us feel our best. Well, according to Jill Kirsh, “Hollywood’s Guru of Hue,” the answer lies in the shade. “Everyone can wear most every color,” says Jill, “It just depends on its hue. The wrong shade can result in a friend saying ‘you need a vacation’ while the right shade can brighten your appearance so drastically that it looks like you just came back from one!” So, the key question remains: how do you know which shade is right for you? The answer is actually sitting right on top of your head. The current color of your hair determines the colors you should have in your wardrobe and in your makeup case. So blondes, brunettes and redheads can all wear blue, but one is more of an aqua while another is teal or navy. It seems like a small detail, but the difference in how it makes you look is dramatic. So this year instead of wasting money on clothes that don’t look or feel good, go to jillkirshcolor.com and discover your hue. For those who like a little extra guidance, Jill has a unique color system that includes a pocketsize color swatch book you can whip out whenever you shop. She also has personalized makeup kits and will do private consults. It’s the perfect gift to give yourself or someone you love (guys too!). Lucky for us, she is giving away a swatch book and makeup kit to one lucky North County Kids Magazine reader (value $194.50) To enter, email us your favorite “go-to” outfit! info@sdnorthcountykids.com Contributed by Elise Edwards. Mom to Mom
Book Review
Megan Rath is a wife and mom of an 10 year old daughter and 5 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.
Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras When Estelle moves back in with her brother after the tragic death of her fiancé, the last thing she expects is to fall for her brother’s best friend Oliver. Especially since he’s already broken her heart once before. But she soon learns that that might just be the best way to mend her grieving heart, no matter how much she tries to fight it. This book falls into what I like to call the “no-brainer” category. It’s a sweet, often sexy, story that you don’t have to think about much, though you find yourself connecting with, and even falling for, the characters. A perfect beach read, and great for any contemporary romance enthusiast.
I give it a B-. Also by Claire Contreras is There is No Light in Darkness, which is the first in the Darkness series.
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo Alina Starkov, and her best friend Mal, grow up as orphans, cared for by a sort-of foster father, The Duke, and a governess. When she and Mal grow up, she becomes a cartographer, and handsome Mal is one of the best hunters in the land. While on a quest, their ship is attacked by Volcra, dark, vicious, magical beings, and Alina brings forth a power she never knew she had, summoning light to drive the Volcra away, and saving Mal’s life. Now that her powers have been revealed, she must learn who to trust, as everything thinks she’s the savior they’ve been waiting for. This was a little like Game of Thrones, extremely tamed down for the young adult crowd. There’s magic, romance, suspense, and adventure. I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the rest of this series.
I give it a B+. The next book in The Grisha Series is Siege and Storm.
